4:44 PM
I think facebook is either messing with me or trying to convert my lifestyle. I've been getting the strangest targeted ads lately about being vegan, communist, and just all sorts of things that are the opposite of me

cookies & tracking are everywhere. Maybe you forgot to go into "private" mode when you were sneaking a peek at those veggie burgers the other day.
I clicked on some rowing machine listings in their marketplace section, and now instead of metamucil ads, I get ones for overpriced rowing machines. Yes, of course I'd like to spend $999 on a rowing machine after explicitly searching for ones under $150.

well did you get your rowing machine

I can't decide if my kid is actually into rowing or if it's a fad.
(rowing machines, I should say -- not actual water rowing)

it's a fad but they are pretty popular because they do work and it facilities being lazy
I would probably get one if I had the room because I would much rather do cardio in a seated position inside my house than have to go outside and run sprints

right? Who am I to get in her way of being healthier?
"Here's your $150 rowing machine. I spent the other $849 on wrapping paper" Merry Christmas!

Keep looking I find that big exercise equipment like that can often be found for pennies on the dollar if not free
Around here you can find a free treadmill/exercise bike basically any day of the year because someone just wants it out of their house

and everyone wants to get on Zwift, so old exercise bikes are suddenly “useless”

often it's cheaper equipment but I've seen $2000+ commercial quality treadmills sitting on the curb with a free sign on them on several occasions

you have to be in good shape just to move one of those things!

if you want to practice deadlifts, it doesn’t even matter if the treadmill doesn’t actually work

hah

5:04 PM
I wonder how gym operators would react if you turned up and started lifting treadmills

I've got a few simple machines in my truck that say any unmovable object can be moved

a friend of mine used to bench press with people standing on the weights

@StephenKitt eddie hall?

@jesse_b if you can lift a barbell with Eddie Hall on it, you must be Eddie Hall
@StephenKitt "the free weights were all taken, and no one is using these treadmills because they're not connected to Zwift, so ..."

@jesse_b hah, not close, but we could only fit 100kg on our bench press

5:09 PM
some of the most impressive unconventional gym related weirdness is in remote parts of africa. It's pretty amazing to see some of the homemade gym equipment that gets made out there

@jesse_b yeah, and Venice Beach ;-)

I'm still trying to picture someone balancing on a round plate

iron biby is a strongman competitor that got his start lifting like old car parts and concrete weights and recently broke the world record for log press, I think he holds the axle press world record too

which strongman was it who was famous for lifting his friends’ Minis and leaving them in impossible situations?

I'm not sure

car walks and car flips used to be a staple in strongman
they still do the walks occasionally but I don't think they have done flips in any big competition for some time because a few people were crushed

my grandfather used to bounce cars out of the way
press down on them, and use the suspension rebound to lift and move the car, a small distance at a time

@jesse_b wow, talk about inflation. from flipping staples to flipping cars!

wasn't there a guy who traded a staple for a house
oh it was a paperclip
I bought a new router table this weekend and then I decided I should get a new router for it too since my ryobi has all sorts of issues. It's pretty hard to search for a woodworking router anymore without finding a bunch of space ship looking home network routers with 65 unnecessary antennas on them

5:31 PM
@jesse_b those antennas are for the Zwift integration. Become the #1 router in your state this week!

gotta gamify everything

2 hours later…
7:17 PM
say what you will about elon musk but with his plan to send people to mars nobody is a more creative serial killer
