That shell arithmetic question bothers me but I'm trying to be nice
"This command doesn't work for me, then how come this completely different command does?!"

@jesse_b it’s quite possible the author only thinks of arithmetic expansion in the context of echoing values (printf or echo)

Smells like an XY problem to me. The question reads like a mistake of expecting eth0_diff=expr ... to execute expr

I think they just have an issue including backticks properly in the markdown

1:47 PM
@StephenKitt Yeah but I would figure they would at least pose the question "is there a difference between these two commands?" rather than implying they are/should be identical

@jesse_b they might not even realise there’s anything to compare; they might “know” that you use $(()) with printf, and expr when you want to calculate a variable for a value
many, many users don’t understand how general many shell concepts are, they learnt them in specific contexts and only reason about them in those contexts

I've been wrong about worse things

@StephenKitt I got some lagavulin finally and I must say I don't really like it lol

@jesse_b haha, each to his own
thank you for supporting the Scottish economy ;-)

1:51 PM
I got the "offerman" edition which was pretty "cheap" (relative to their other offerings) so it might just be that but it's too smoky for me

I received some local (French) whisky as a father’s day gift, I haven’t tried it yet
@jesse_b yes, all versions of it are very smoky
I like smoky whiskies (and smoky beers)

Definitely need to support scottland now. Tom Stoltman just won the worlds strongest man contest

Yup, I saw that! But the football squad dropped out of Euro 2020

I think tom has the potential to be one of the greatest strongman ever

replacing Charles Atlas in popular culture

2:01 PM
Heh, they do call him "king of the stones" (atlas stones) but I don't really like that. He is the best at any event that requires both speed and strength

2:11 PM
I'm usually pretty harsh of claims of "AI" and truly believe we will not see "AI" in our lifetime but yesterday I was talking to my wife about an amazon video algorithm and said "It probably thinks..."
Maybe Alan was wrong

@αғsнιη
awk: cmd. line:8: (FILENAME=input FNR=2) warning: reference to uninitialized variable `col'
awk: cmd. line:8: (FILENAME=input FNR=2) warning: reference to uninitialized variable `col'

3:56 PM
@PrabhjotSingh that is not the thing that you expect that gawk will not give you that warning
my comment was about that there is no specific GNU awk extensions/features in your command

@αғsнιη Thanks. I've already edited the answer. Is this is duplicate of the answer by guest_7?

@PrabhjotSingh Is it?

@αғsнιη My answer is duplicate of the answer by guest_7?

@PrabhjotSingh looks very similar. it just different on how you both are checking the fields that starts with "S:"

@αғsнιη Ok. And Thanks.

4:09 PM
and I think "a[i] ~ /^S:/" is better than just calling a function as you did "index(a[i], "S:") == 1"

I am just an awk learner. One day I will learn awk. Rafta rafta

@PrabhjotSingh sure, I, myself learned awk at night :D
your awk is good!
looks to me that you are not just a beginner with it
and you know it well

@αғsнιη Hehe. I upvoted your answer on 24 May. Congratulations to you for gold.
If I know little awk, credit should go to Arnold Robbins, Ed Morton and you.

@PrabhjotSingh thanks!
26 may, yes, that date I will not forgot it
@PrabhjotSingh heyyyy
I admit that EdMorton is awesome in awk
I know very little about awk : )
and of course Arnold Robbins is excellent in awk too
actually he is awk himself : D

@αғsнιη It is true, therefore I wrote your name after Robbins and Ed Morton. Hehe

4:24 PM
I'm not even the 3rd one
you forgot many awk users here : )

This would be injustice.

I'm the last one
: )

@αғsнιη you’re ahead of Ed here: unix.stackexchange.com/tags/awk/topusers ;-)

I've asked 9 awk questions :o

@StephenKitt Ohh, on a paper yes, but in experience he is ahead : )

4:27 PM
@αғsнιη oh I agree, I just found it amusing

@StephenKitt yes!
@jesse_b it's less and you want ask more? or it's toooo much ?
: )

I'm usually surprised by the number of questions I've asked

haha
for me it was 6
but I should increase it, first reason is I don't like even numbers at all
:D
another odd behavior that I have beside that I don't like upper case letters

4:48 PM
I prefer even numbers except 4 and 6
If I increase/decrease my volume I will select 5 rather than 4 or 6 but 8 or 0 rather than 7 or 9

so that's why it's 9 for you and 6 for me 😂

I like only two numbers 0 and 1.

@PrabhjotSingh the only numbers than we can write anything with them

5:09 PM
@PrabhjotSingh polarized the conversation
"there are only 10 types of people..."

@jesse_b You can see I have 0 questions on stackoverflow and 1 question on unix SE.
I have never said that text, pictures and videos are 0 and 1.

@PrabhjotSingh It's a joke. There is a shirt that says "There are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand binary and those that don't"
