That shell arithmetic question bothers me but I'm trying to be nice

@jesse_b it’s quite possible the author only thinks of arithmetic expansion in the context of echoing values (printf or echo)

Smells like an XY problem to me. The question reads like a mistake of expecting eth0_diff=expr ... to execute expr

I think they just have an issue including backticks properly in the markdown

@StephenKitt Yeah but I would figure they would at least pose the question "is there a difference between these two commands?" rather than implying they are/should be identical

@jesse_b they might not even realise there’s anything to compare; they might “know” that you use $(()) with printf, and expr when you want to calculate a variable for a value

many, many users don’t understand how general many shell concepts are, they learnt them in specific contexts and only reason about them in those contexts

Heh, they do call him "king of the stones" (atlas stones) but I don't really like that. He is the best at any event that requires both speed and strength

I'm usually pretty harsh of claims of "AI" and truly believe we will not see "AI" in our lifetime but yesterday I was talking to my wife about an amazon video algorithm and said "It probably thinks..."

and I think "a[i] ~ /^S:/" is better than just calling a function as you did "index(a[i], "S:") == 1"

another odd behavior that I have beside that I don't like upper case letters

I prefer even numbers except 4 and 6

If I increase/decrease my volume I will select 5 rather than 4 or 6 but 8 or 0 rather than 7 or 9

so that's why it's 9 for you and 6 for me 😂

I like only two numbers 0 and 1.
