@JeffSchaller, your deleting of half of the answers at unix.stackexchange.com/q/653844 seems arbitrary and unwarranted to me here. The question is to explain how some code does X + Y. Some answers explain why it does X and not Y and how to do X + Y (which in the end looks like what the OP wants), the questions you deleted suggest alternative ways to do X + Y without repeating why the original code does only X as that would be redundant.

@StéphaneChazelas perhaps I've misunderstood the Question, but it looked pretty straightforward initially. It didn't ask "how do I delete leading and trailing blank lines" but only how it works. I will reconsider. Thank you for explaining your position here.

I think if we want to answer the question that we think the OP should have asked, then the Q should be edited to reflect that. The current title and only question in the Question are limited in scope. I think it makes sense to have a more general question (I couldn't find a dupe on a quick search).

Do moderators routinely delete answers that don't address the question (on U&L)? Based on posts on the main Meta I thought it used to happen, on SO at least, but my feeling was that it wasn't such a common thing anymore.

@fra-san It's not very common, but it does happen. Mostly with answers that are complete rubbish, or don't attempt to answer the question. Outliers, basically.

@fra-san as per protocol mods shouldn't judge technical merit so only the most useless of answers can be deleted like that. Mostly NAA, probably. Of course sites can have their own customs.

@fra-san What Faheem says, and we may delete answers that are question etc. Basically answers that are Low Quality enough to warrant deletion for one or another reason. If a moderator goes through the review queues, their votes are not really votes but carried out immediately.

If there is a sound more pleasant than pneumatic tools I haven't heard it

Does anyone here use an eletronic device to read books in electronic form? Like an Amazon Kindle, but not necessarily a Kindle.

I've occasionally thought it would be a useful thing to have.

A kindle is actual not very different in size to a phone. What's the advantage?

My wife uses a kindle all the time

the screen technology is very different than that of a phone or tablet. It's much easier on the eyes for reading but would not be suitable for videos and other things like tthat

yeah the kindle screen is quite unique though, IIRC they have some patented technology for it

Something around the size of an A4 sheet would be good. Preferably with an option to expand or contract the size of the text. Though I suppose ereaders are smaller than that.

I have an older Kindle. I've stopped using it now, for no good reason really. I used to love it for bringing books while traveling.

Is there any Linux software that can be used to record a video call e.g. Skype or similar? Video is not a must, but recording audio is important.

Also the software tool should be able to record sound even when I'm using a headset instead of the computer speaker.

@bit I usually use OBS studio for that kind of things. Easy to modify "clip" of windows etc.

I typically have a profile for web-video recordings with quality, encoding, storage location etc set.

@FaheemMitha yeah, as jesse said, e-ink is different from phone screens: the colour of the material itself changes. In this regard it's closer to old-school lcd displays on calculators. I've got a kindle paperwhite. One part of the coolness is that it's actually whiter (meh) and a touchscreen (meh) and nice backlighting (woo)

I definitely wouldn't read books on my phone. Too small and too bright.

@FaheemMitha as Kusalananda said, it'll work but often look bad. I've seen page numbers stick around in the text, looking terrible. I've used Calibre for converting between ebook formats and it works OK. But it obviously can't universally translate from A to B, only with mixed results. Converting between two e-book formats (like mobi <-> epub) is better, of course.

simplescreenrecorder for some reason (probably because I'm using Wayland not X11) cannot record video. It records the headset audio but not at the same time as the microphone audio, they can only be recorded one at a time.

@bit ah, yes, under Wayland perhaps not. In general for OBS: yes, it is used a lot for live-streaming. You can typically set it up with various "Scenes", adding tickers, effects, playback and what not. Then using effects to transition between scenes etc. But: it is also nice to use for screen-recording. Simply put you add for example a Window-source, which can be an active window.

I usually use Studio mode where one side is Preview (where I for example create a fram with interest or add a caption (text) overlay between sessions). Then transition that to the Program (which is what is actually being recorded)

I'm trying to install obs-studio on fedora using the rpmfusion-free-updates repository, however the x264 package with version 0.157-13.20190717git34c06d1.fc31 is a dependency. I tracked this package to the url img.cs.montana.edu/linux/fedora/rpmfusion/updates/31/free/…. Is the x264 package with version 0.157-13.20190717git34c06d1.fc31 from rpmfusion-free-updates safe to install? The version seems strange because it is not named using standard rpm package version naming conversion.

Under sources add a source (like for example Window capture) - not sure if that is available under Wayland, perhaps something else). Then select the window one want to capture. If one (under wayland) have to record entire desktop - one could "clip it". The Audio mixer is show audio sources but can also be configured. One can also use JACK input etc. but that is more advanced.

Under Settings -> Output one have a "Recording" tab where one can set various.

Advanced also gives some recording options.

@bit yes, I honestly can notsay. I'm a bit busy here as well, and write between the battles heh. For streaming , it depends on service. For places with no "service" for OBS but where one can use webcam I have used video4linux (v4l2) and simply streamed projector window of the Program.

No, you can have multiple sources at a time. For the color whack IDK. Beyond various forums and SE (This perhaps video.stackexchange.com ... looks somewhat low frequency though). One also have #obs at freenode.net (IRC) (and these days perhaps libera as well).

But I am no OBS guru. Have only figured out things along the way. What I like about it for my use is the ability to add windows, crop, filters etc. in preview then transition it. + having say 3 "scenes" (I honestly usually simply use Sources and the hide/show thing when recording)

When I run it I run it form cli using obs -v

It gives some information in console

(if one care about that)

Can give hints if something is buggy
