But there are at least two ways I could do this.

(a) Write a small Expect script to call a shell script.

(b) Write the whole thing as a Tcl/Expect script. In this case, the shell part will be Tcl executing shell commands.

(a) would be easier to understand, but it's two scripts. (b) might be more obscure, but it would be one script. Thoughts?

@FaheemMitha I don't understand the situation yet (I haven't clicked on the Question), but if you think that's the way it needs to happen, then that's the way you should write it. Maybe someone else knows an improvement or simplification. Write it the way you would solve it (the best you know how).

@jesse_b the old and the new! Pulled a handful of dandelions with the Grampa's Weeder and also took the shiny new weed whacker out for a spin, so to speak. It was a very satisfying experience -- no stoppages to re-string the line! \o/

@JeffSchaller nice. How long does it last on one battery and does it start to get weak after a while?

@jesse_b I haven't gone through one of the new batteries yet, so I can't say. Only time that happened with the previous one was a hot day last summer when I had delayed the chore for long enough that I had lots of trimming to do. I'm sure the manual (that's in the recycling bin) would claim something about runtime. Something in the area of 20 minutes is my memory, but...

I bored out the muffler on my weed wacker too so it's even more of a nuisance

I'm of two minds. I was just sick & tired of the old trimmer situation, so I changed gears (hah) completely to the electric one. That turned out to be a bit of a bust, but I think I salvaged the situation. I also recently replaced the fuel lines in a gas chainsaw, so ... I'm not some sort of "green energy" advocate -- I just go with what works.

heh. the muffler mod was part of some troubleshooting I was doing because it was getting bogged down under heavy throttle which can be caused by a muffler getting clogged with schmoo but it turned out to just be some bad gas. But the increased airflow definitely made a noticeable difference, it revs to full throttle in like half a second now

Does your electric trimmer have a universal attachment system?

I've got a leaf blower and hedge trimmer attachment for mine, I love the versatility

@jesse_b I did not go for a whole system, I was just happy to get one with an upgradeable head; I already have a leaf blower and a hedge trimmer, so I wasn't really in the market. My leaf blower was/is a combination vacuum/blower, but ... it wasn't the best tool for the vacuuming job, so now it's back to being a one-trick pony.
