I skipped the weed and feed on my lawn this spring because I did some overseeding and now I'm being overrun with dandelions. Send backup @JeffSchaller

2:07 AM
@jesse_b 5 gallon bucket and one of these: Grampa's Weeder - The Original Stand Up Weed Puller Tool with Long Handle - Made with Real Bamboo & 4-Claw Steel Head Design - Easily Remove Weeds Without Bending, Pulling, or Kneeling amazon.com/dp/B001D1FFZA
Hit em after a light rain and you'll be golden

2:23 AM
Nice

@JeffSchaller Heh I got one of those after your last recommendation for it but I still prefer my other one
it's more like this: hardwareworld.com/pw3apj9/…

I have a taste/style question. I'm writing an answer to unix.stackexchange.com/q/647129/4671
But there are at least two ways I could do this.
(a) Write a small Expect script to call a shell script.
(b) Write the whole thing as a Tcl/Expect script. In this case, the shell part will be Tcl executing shell commands.
(a) would be easier to understand, but it's two scripts. (b) might be more obscure, but it would be one script. Thoughts?

@jesse_b deja vu!

@Jesse_b you have one of these? -- best tool I've found so far

I think I found mine at the thrift store shortly after that conversation
I think my ground is just mostly clay so that tool is much more difficult to penetrate it

@FaheemMitha easier-to-understand is usually better, IMHO
I might occasionally come up with & user a one-liner, but I don't think it's best for SE -- for future readers, and for understanding/legibility.

@JeffSchaller I figure that Tcl calling shell isn't ideal for comprehensibility. Do you agree?
But to run it will require two files.

@FaheemMitha I don't understand the situation yet (I haven't clicked on the Question), but if you think that's the way it needs to happen, then that's the way you should write it. Maybe someone else knows an improvement or simplification. Write it the way you would solve it (the best you know how).

You use your new weed choocher yet @JeffSchaller?

@jesse_b the old and the new! Pulled a handful of dandelions with the Grampa's Weeder and also took the shiny new weed whacker out for a spin, so to speak. It was a very satisfying experience -- no stoppages to re-string the line! \o/

@JeffSchaller nice. How long does it last on one battery and does it start to get weak after a while?

@jesse_b I haven't gone through one of the new batteries yet, so I can't say. Only time that happened with the previous one was a hot day last summer when I had delayed the chore for long enough that I had lots of trimming to do. I'm sure the manual (that's in the recycling bin) would claim something about runtime. Something in the area of 20 minutes is my memory, but...

yeah well lithium battery claims and what actually happens are most often two very different things
I don't think I could ever switch though, I just love the way 2 strokes sound
I bored out the muffler on my weed wacker too so it's even more of a nuisance

I'm of two minds. I was just sick & tired of the old trimmer situation, so I changed gears (hah) completely to the electric one. That turned out to be a bit of a bust, but I think I salvaged the situation. I also recently replaced the fuel lines in a gas chainsaw, so ... I'm not some sort of "green energy" advocate -- I just go with what works.
@jesse_b just don't go putting steel wires on it like that one story you found!

5:25 PM
heh. the muffler mod was part of some troubleshooting I was doing because it was getting bogged down under heavy throttle which can be caused by a muffler getting clogged with schmoo but it turned out to just be some bad gas. But the increased airflow definitely made a noticeable difference, it revs to full throttle in like half a second now
Does your electric trimmer have a universal attachment system?
I've got a leaf blower and hedge trimmer attachment for mine, I love the versatility

@jesse_b I did not go for a whole system, I was just happy to get one with an upgradeable head; I already have a leaf blower and a hedge trimmer, so I wasn't really in the market. My leaf blower was/is a combination vacuum/blower, but ... it wasn't the best tool for the vacuuming job, so now it's back to being a one-trick pony.

man, I'd need a detached garage just to store all of the attachments! :)

I'm thinking of taking down all my hedges soon so I guess I wont need the trimmer anymore

6:18 PM
@jesse_b woodpecker war is escalating

:)
They have been pecking my chimney again

Have you considered replacing your wooden chimney with something sturdier?

it is metal
which is why it makes incredibly loud echoing noises throughout my whole house

woodpecker says fake news

I've been thinking of going up there and hot gluing thumb tacks all over the place

6:22 PM
sounds illegal

Birds are real or not?

plus they are probably too small-scale to keeps birds away

This is america! I have the right to bear thumb tacks

@PrabhjotSingh right, a few strong magnets might work better
@jesse_b well you also can't shoot them

@AndrasDeak Hehe

6:23 PM
here in this backward land you aren't allowed to mess with nesting habits of swallows, for instance

Who says the thumb tacks are targeted at the woodpecker
maybe I just fear santa clause

I'm told you only need to booby-trap the inside of the chimney to keep the old creep away

@jesse_b Who doesn't? Bloody pervert breaking into children's houses!

try deworming your chimney

6:24 PM
Hey, look, jesse is in the news

sorry that is a click baitey website but apparently they peck metal to let other woodpeckers know to stay away

> Usually when you hear a woodpecker hammering on metal (metal chimney caps, metal transformers on power poles, rooftop antennas, etc.), it’s to let any woodpeckers of the same species within hearing range know that “THIS IS MY territory.”
that's pretty neat
I'd expect them to use their calls for that. European woodpeckers have crazy loud calls.

I wonder why those chose those words to put emphasis on

@jesse_b once you told me that your cat eats mockingbirds. If it is correct why don't you seek her help?

THIS IS MY territory

6:26 PM
You know how the sound of the pecking fades away? That's why ;)
BRRRRRRrrrrrr(rrrrr)

Maybe I can just get a jackhammer and a gong and make loud noises of my own to let those woodpeckers know it is in fact my territory
@PrabhjotSingh There are a lot of hawks in my area I don't let my cats out

put some tacks on the cat

I keep trying to train my dog to kill woodpeckers but he's too fat and slow

one of those coyote vests

someone posted on next door this morning about a cat in my neighborhood being killed by a barn owl

6:29 PM
wow

that's pretty metal

like your chimney

I don't have time to deal with these wood peckers though, I've been working on breaking a guiness world record lately

You should import some bigger crows to fight them then.

@jesse_b I dare not ask

6:31 PM
@jesse_b Bodybuilding?

oldest living person
been working on it for 35 years really and at first I was doing terribly but I've since moved up about 3 billion places

@jesse_b 3 billion or 32 billion?

7:23 PM
@jesse_b You do realize there is a very significant difference between woodpeckers and wood peckers, right?
Knowing you, I assume you did that very much on purpose :)

heh
10/10 wood peck

1 hour later…
8:48 PM
@terdon well they do peck wood ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1 hour later…
not bad

10:58 PM
Very not bad :)
