@MichaelHomer does your alumni service provide access to the book?
Or does your university library provide access to the book for its current students and faculties?
Use the method that I mentioned a while ago, I have managed to get 70% of the book.
The remaining part I have no way to access.
That university library alumni service in your link is not free.
That university library doesn't provide access to the book to its students and faculties.

Tim
2:13 AM
Did any one by any chance take advantage of that?

I don't know about Universities. I know I attempted several times to re- enroll and finish the last year of my degree, but they declined all such application, until enough time had surpassed that my credits were null and void. The student debt however remained. But at least now I truly don't mind, there is nothing they have to offer me

@Tim Mine does not shelve that book, no
But many others it has, and so do other libraries, often more so

Tim
@AdamL Relatable.
@MichaelHomer Did you take advantage of the COVID-19 free access?
Techinically, it is still in the midst of pandemic, but greedy publisher decided to end free access

@Tim No
I have general DL access all the time anyway, though, so it wasn't hugely useful to me

Tim
@MichaelHomer does the general DL access provide accessibility to that book?

2:27 AM
ACM-published books are not part of the DL subscription

Tim
Is DL access from your alumni service?

I am staff, but anybody can walk onto campus and access all the library databases as I understand it

Tim
That was true.

@JeffSchaller you can't actually discuss politics anywhere. I mean sure if it is content that pleases stack exchange in the number of users say 30 in total, if it doesn't , the question will be closed very quickly under an incredibly vague and subjective basis
in the politics community i mean

To the best of my knowledge it is still true, though I obviously haven't tried it

Tim
2:32 AM
Some university libraries are open to the public. But in NYC, they are not. Probably due to discrimination against homeless people
"security" reason

Campus wifi is enough
Since all the ACM is looking for is arriving from the right IP block
In any case, unlikely to help for this particular book, and in general academic papers are not going to be useful to you anyway

Tim
Did you study distributed algorithms and concurrency models?

In undergrad, not much since

Tim
What books did you read and your lecturers recommend?

I don't think I read any books.

Tim
2:38 AM
That was genius
book is likely to be better organized, and help with knowledge retention

Demonstrably your approach has not been helpful thus far, but I'm sure success is just around the corner

Tim
knowledge retention is not defined by personal success

Or perhaps a more concrete and practical goal would be more productive? If the plan is to get a software development role, that seems likely

Tim
Do you understand Zookeeper and Kubernetes?

Tim
2:43 AM
What alternatives do you know?

That is a bridge I would cross when I encountered the need for it, rather than preemptively

Tim
Academia always has amazing cutting edge tools
I am sure you know what they are used for and can be productive immediately
I have to finish reading the graph book. The sooner the better.

If the goal is knowledge retention for its own sake, fair enough, but if it's with the idea of "a software engineering interview" then attaining a functional level of some common language is far more necessary and close to sufficient
That book I believe I may actually have on a shelf

Tim
Which graph book do you like the best?

I don't have any view on that.

Tim
3:50 AM
What is relation between concurrency models and distributed algorithms?

3 hours later…
7:07 AM
@MichaelHomer They're also relatively open to community usage, I believe. Or were.
Compared to India, they're very open.
This may partly reflect the fact that Americans aren't very interested in reading, by and large, especially academic style reading. So abuse isn't a major issue.
In India, they're very suspicious and generally it's a closed shop.

6 hours later…
Tim
1:17 PM
@FaheemMitha In India, are people very interested in reading, by and large, especially academic style reading. So abuse is a major issue?
@AdamL What happened, darling?

1:41 PM
@Tim I'm puzzled by your first sentence. Most of India is illiterate, and most of the remainder isn't very interested in reading either. They are more interested in getting a good job and making money. Also, family. So I don't agree with that statement in general. Of course, some people are interested in reading, as is the case anywhere.
@Tim I don't know whether abuse is a major issue, but I do know that Indian universities are not very open with their library resources, at least in comparison with the US.

Tim
@FaheemMitha Indeed, Americans are very advantaged.

Tim
2:15 PM
updated: book no longer need
@FaheemMitha But that doesn't prevent India from becoming the powerhouse of global software industry, does it?
and enormously expand the work force of US
make everything so much competitive.
Most of them are very good at communication and interpersonal skills, and rarely shy away'
Therefore are favorites of employers

1 hour later…
3:30 PM
@Tim Some places outsource programming to India, because they think it's cheaper.
I don't know if that makes it a powerhouse.
I don't even know if it saves them money in the long run.
@Tim If you mean Indians, then that's far from true.

Tim
@FaheemMitha the elite ones that work in software industry
India has the biggest talent pool in the world

4:04 PM
@Tim You seem very knowledgeable about India.

Tim
4:17 PM
because they are impressive in so many ways

7 hours later…
Tim
11:36 PM
@FaheemMitha I was wondering how you fast and how often? What is the benefit that you feel from fasting?
