@jesse_b printf '%s\n' "$a" "$b" "$c" | paste -d , - - - is POSIX-compliant, which this one technically isn't (because sed's input has to be a text file, and an unterminated line isn't one). Doesn't seem notably better than your first version, though
Hello. Does anyone here have any experience with using the "nice" command? I'm working on a server and I'm trying to run a bunch of commands that should end quite soon, if they have all the processor's working at 100%. Someone else is running another large set of programs, and that person has helpfully set a niceness of 10. I assumed that if I set a niceness of 5, I'd get first preference, but it doesn't seem to be happening. Have I misunderstood how this command works?
@terdon Will do, in a bit. Yes, sorry, I forgot to mention, it's Ubuntu 18.04
@terdon Oh wow, this is quite a good link. I ddin't ask a question on the site in case it was too silly, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to working with the command line..
@terdon When I named the instance "centos" it automatically switched from windows to redhat but it's just annoying that is has options for like 20 different versions of linux including a few very obscure ones but no option for centos which is probably one of the most used distributions out there
Last time I checked, it didn't have an option for Mint which, at the time at least, was the most used Linux. I think it only has an option if it's worth having: if the distro is sufficiently different an option is needed.
@jesse_b The fact that VirtualBox doesn't have a CentOS option does not necessarily mean that it won't run it. I've run Plan9 on VirtualBox on macOS, and there's certainly no such option...
OpenBSD is the most popular OpenBSD. That works well enough for me.
@StephenKitt maybe your turbo button controlled the clock speed. Mine routed the exhaust air through a turbine which in turn spun a compressor that forced compressed air into the intake resulting in increased power
The mayor of denver sent out a tweet asking people not to travel for the holidays while he sat in the airport 20 minutes away from flying to houston to see his daughter for thanksgiving lol
