@jesse_b printf '%s\n' "$a" "$b" "$c" | paste -d , - - - is POSIX-compliant, which this one technically isn't (because sed's input has to be a text file, and an unterminated line isn't one). Doesn't seem notably better than your first version, though
there is probably a mlr verb for it?

Hello. Does anyone here have any experience with using the "nice" command? I'm working on a server and I'm trying to run a bunch of commands that should end quite soon, if they have all the processor's working at 100%. Someone else is running another large set of programs, and that person has helpfully set a niceness of 10. I assumed that if I set a niceness of 5, I'd get first preference, but it doesn't seem to be happening. Have I misunderstood how this command works?

@Philip I suggest you post a question on the site, so you can tell us what operating system you are using. Are you on Ubuntu perhaps?

@terdon Will do, in a bit. Yes, sorry, I forgot to mention, it's Ubuntu 18.04
@terdon Oh wow, this is quite a good link. I ddin't ask a question on the site in case it was too silly, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to working with the command line..

9:42 AM
@Philip That's absolutely fine! Everyone was a noob once!

Hehe

why does everyone hate on centos :(
virtualbox doesn't even have a centos option

don’t use VirtualBox :-P

Do you have any alternative suggestions for macos?

don’t use macOS ;-)

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
mac isn't so bad in between the times it's being bad

3:38 PM
@jesse_b Doesn't macOS have its own thing? Parallels or something?
But anyway, the settings in vmware are pretty basic, right? Presumably RedHat would work for centos.

@terdon When I named the instance "centos" it automatically switched from windows to redhat but it's just annoying that is has options for like 20 different versions of linux including a few very obscure ones but no option for centos which is probably one of the most used distributions out there

Last time I checked, it didn't have an option for Mint which, at the time at least, was the most used Linux. I think it only has an option if it's worth having: if the distro is sufficiently different an option is needed.
Which kinda makes sense, if true.

@terdon obligatory Twitter-style disclaimer: “according to some sources only” (Distrowatch) (I know you know)

Oooh, someone got all defensive!
:P

The toyota camry is the most common car on the road, doesn't make it a good choice

3:50 PM
Is there any better source, by the way? Obviously, distrowatch's download count is hardly reliable, but is there anything else out there?

@jesse_b in some countries only :-P

I haven't even heard of this toyota :)

@terdon it’s not even a download count, it’s a page popularity count, which is self-reinforcing

Ah, right
But is there anything else out there?

@terdon I’m not aware of anything

3:51 PM
@terdon It's called a Toyota Avensis in Europe

of course Debian is the most popular Linux distro, wait, no, RHEL, wait, no, Debian, wait, no, RHEL
infinite loop detected

@jesse_b Ah, that rings a bell, at least.
@StephenKitt I really doubt it. Do you seriously think either of those is the most used?
Perhaps in the server world, but surely Linux desktops far outnumber servers in 2020.
He says with no evidence whatsoever.

debian definitely would be if you are including all "debian based" distros

@jesse_b funnily enough it’s now sold as the Camry in Europe too, since last year

@StephenKitt Yeah I saw the "avensis" name ended in 2018 but I didn't see what had replaced it

3:54 PM
@terdon no, the most used now is probably Alpine (as the base image for containers) or whatever base (internal) distro the largest cloud provider uses

it's a toyota though so surely there will still be "avensis" on the road for the next 20 years

@jesse_b yeah, but they’re quite rare in Europe
the cars with the largest market shares are category A or B cars

volkswagen and renault it seems

Been seeing a lot of Yaris around too. That's Toyota.

@StephenKitt huh

4:41 PM
@jesse_b The fact that VirtualBox doesn't have a CentOS option does not necessarily mean that it won't run it. I've run Plan9 on VirtualBox on macOS, and there's certainly no such option...
OpenBSD is the most popular OpenBSD. That works well enough for me.

@Kusalananda I know, just frustrating that it has things like turbolinux, xandros, and gentoo but not centos

I don't even know what those specific options do.
Do they just set some defaults?
I tend to go in and change everything to my liking anyway, regardless of what OS I try to run.

I don't know what they do either lol

Turbolinux? O_O

I mean, the "OpenBSD" setting doesn't even tick the "system clock in UTC" box if I remember correctly.

4:46 PM
@StephenKitt I prefer supercharged linux, has more low end torque

@jesse_b ha ha yes, I wasn’t even thinking of the car connection, I was just surprised that it still had an entry for a long-gone distro

turbo linux must be the reason my first PC had a "turbo" button

ObRetro:

Q: What did the 'turbo' button actually do?

Neil MeyerI remember the computer I played Commander Keen on as a child had a turbo button that I was forbidden to touch, what did this button actually do?

ah yes, the "take your hands off those buttons" button

5:02 PM
@StephenKitt maybe your turbo button controlled the clock speed. Mine routed the exhaust air through a turbine which in turn spun a compressor that forced compressed air into the intake resulting in increased power

@jesse_b wow, you must have had a huge exhaust fan in your computer!

@StephenKitt I got it from texas

5:54 PM
I heard that jesse_b's computer exhaust fan powered a wind farm, providing power to low-income households while searching for new prime numbers.
(the NSA would not confirm or deny this statement)

thanks @terdon

6:09 PM
np, I've been bitten by that one often enough

I don't always post an answer without testing it but when I do it doesn't work
probably still haven't learned my lesson though :(

7:03 PM
The mayor of denver sent out a tweet asking people not to travel for the holidays while he sat in the airport 20 minutes away from flying to houston to see his daughter for thanksgiving lol
