6:48 AM
I heard back from John Davis, who said he doesn't have anything to do with slrn.org, but will pass on the message to those who do.

4 hours later…
11:07 AM
@FaheemMitha huh!

@AndrasDeak Huh?
Still amazing that a spam message managed to find its way onto a static web page, though.
One usually finds them in comments and the like.

The page seemed official enough. And it links to some even more official looking page with almost the same content and design.

@AndrasDeak I don't think the page is created by some random person. They're associates and developers of slrn.

Makes sense

Or were in the past, since slrn is mostly dead, I think. The last commit in JED's Git repos is from 2017.

11:11 AM
There's another spam link near the bottom, in the slrn-users paragraph

And Usenet, regrettably, appears to be headed for obsolescence.

And another in the intro paragraph
If spam can be injected it's only a matter of time until proper malware is added

I didn't look at it carefully.

@FaheemMitha don't help their SEO :P

@AndrasDeak Oh, sorry. Should I delete those lines then?

11:14 AM
Not sure to be honest. Perhaps replace the . in .com with a space
Chat does get indexed

I've flagged them for deletion.
Since it doesn't really matter, and isn't part of any conversation as such.

I thought you were within the 2-minute window :)

user435118
@FaheemMitha Why do you want them deleted?

@AndrasDeak Apparently not.
@Daniil Well, they're spam links. But if the mods don't think it's necessary, that's fine too.

Poof

11:16 AM
@AndrasDeak Should I send a followup to JED telling him there are other links on that page? Or can they figure it out for themselves?
@AndrasDeak That was fast.

Well we have a quality assortment of mods here usually ;) Plus lots of others on the network.

@AndrasDeak True, it could be a mod from one of the other sites.

@FaheemMitha I think whoever looks into it should see every link being pushed... if they're worth their salt

Though I think the overall strength is down after recent events.
@AndrasDeak Ok. So that's a vote for no followup then?

I think chat.SE is fine. Chat.SO though...very few mods left.
@FaheemMitha yeah, but I don't even know what slrn is. I'm the peanut gallery.

11:19 AM
@AndrasDeak It's a newsreader. While there is still news left to read.

You can still follow up if some links remain
@FaheemMitha yeah, I got that. ;)

@AndrasDeak I meant the main sites. Chat doesn't have mods, as such.

@FaheemMitha mods active in chat, I mean

Sometimes the site mods hang out in chat, but it's not that common, nor is it expected, as far as I know.

Chat.SE shares the pool of mods, which is plenty

11:20 AM
@AndrasDeak There aren't that many mods active in chat across the site. Actually, most sites don't have active chat rooms at all. Check and see.

On chat.SO we only have SO mods

@AndrasDeak Oh. I didn't know that.

@FaheemMitha perhaps I'm just aware of the ones that do

@AndrasDeak Some rooms have relatively active chatrooms and mods. E.g. here and TeX SE.

@FaheemMitha yeah. And one of the most chat-active ones stepped down...
@FaheemMitha also RPG
Pretty much the three rooms I've been in here :)

11:22 AM
Though the mods in TeX SE don't have much to do. TeX users are a pretty well behaved lot. Also the SuperUser chat room tends to be quite active. And Cooking (The Trying Pan) sometimes. I used to hang out in both of those from time to time.
TeX I'm generally in as a regular thing.

SU probably has Journeyman Geek who is very active

@AndrasDeak He used to be there, yes.
Oh and the DBA chat room is also reasonably active. Lots of shop talk. But reasonably friendly and helpful, which is always a good thing.
I hope Python in Debian defaults to 3 soon. It's hard to remember to keep typing 3.

It won't, won't it?
> The python command was preferred for code compatible with both Python 2 and 3 (since it was available on all systems, even those that already aliased it to Python 3).
The python command should always invoke Python 2 (to prevent hard-to-diagnose errors when Python 2 code is run on Python 3).
The python2 and python3 commands should be available to specify the version explicitly.
Arch switched before this came out so now there's lots of confusion :(

@AndrasDeak I think python in Debian will eventually default to 3.
But I'm not sure when it will happen. Possibly next release.

I see

11:35 AM
The python2 and python3 commands will still remain available.

@FaheemMitha I'm sure that won't be painful at all :P

Well, python2 will go when Python 2 does.
@AndrasDeak Well, Debian has been doing that transition for a while now.
As has every significant Python project. Mercurial had quite a lot of trouble with it, I think. But they're mostly done now.
> I believe Python's choices represent a terrific example of what not to do when managing a large project or ecosystem.

@FaheemMitha python 2 is already gone ;)

@AndrasDeak In mean from Debian. And lots of people use it still.
But I think most big projects have transitioned, or are completing their transition. Mercurial, for example, does not default to 3 yet.

11:56 AM
how does Hg relate to python executables?

12:12 PM
@AndrasDeak Mercurial is written in Python, and the hg command is a Python script.
Most of Mercurial is a library, which gets called by the script.
At the top of /usr/bin/hg is:
#! /usr/bin/python2
At least on Unix-like systems.
The Mercurial-specific bit is at the bottom, and looks like
from mercurial import dispatch

dispatch.run()

12:25 PM
@FaheemMitha I knew the former, but not the latter. Thanks.

12:37 PM
@AndrasDeak You're welcome. Are you a Mercurial user?

Nope. Git for the win ;)

@AndrasDeak Ugh.

12:57 PM
@FaheemMitha do you have bad experience with git?

@AndrasDeak Not as such. Just not a big fan. It's UI is fairly awful. But I don't have a problem with it. After all, it's still free software.
I just think there is an unfortunate monoculture around it now.

Monoculture, probably. UI is weird and inconsistent at times :) But I love the way it works.

@AndrasDeak You might like Mercurial better. At least the UI is better. And the feature set too, probably. Evolve is probably the current major advantage over the competition.
Which these days is just Git, I suppose.

1:17 PM
Everything I see and need uses git and I like git, so I'm fine :)

3 hours later…
3:59 PM
I had this problem with git originally. I just couldn't "get" it. Then I looked at Mercurial, saw what probably was basically the same concepts, but all was just... clearer. :D
Though since everything uses git, that's what I've then used, doesn't seem to be much of a problem any more, and I can't remember the details of that original confusion.

@ilkkachu Git isn't hard to understand, it just has a poorly designed UI.
But it works, which I suppose is the most important thing.
Still, usability is important. I've hardly ever used it, but I find it irritating when I do.
Though it's certainly better than if a proprietary version control system was dominant. Such situations are not unknown, and never lead to anything good.
