I see the virus infections and deaths in India are making a beautiful exponential curve. One could use it as a textbook example.
The Worldometer one, that is.

11 hours later…
6:20 PM
Someone somehow managed to deface the front page of slrn.org with "Fast Payday Loans". I wonder how that was possible. One doesn't see that often.
Does anyone see a contact email?

6:53 PM
Sent an email to the address that John Davis uses for his slrn git repository.
I figure that if that doesn't work, it's not my fault.

reasonable attempt

@AndrasDeak You see those words too, right? I'm not hallucinating?

I was just going to say; seemed temporary? I don't see them. Hopefully your ISP isn't inserting junk.

@JeffSchaller Oh dear. Unfortunately, that's entirely possible.

@FaheemMitha yup, nope

7:08 PM
I opened it in a different tab, and I still see it in the same place.

It's a hard link in my page source. Might be due to blocked JS on my side?

@AndrasDeak You don't see it either? The paragraph looks like
> From slrn 0.9.7.0 the program was developed by Thomas Schultz with the help of a great number of people who made contributions. John E. Davis has returned to develop slrn again Fast Online Payday Loans and after much work has released slrn 0.9.9. The slrn community both thank Thomas for his hard work and welcome John back.

@FaheemMitha you asked "you see those too? I'm not hallucinating?". My answer to those questions was to be read respectively.

Ok, so you do see it.

Oh now I see it -- "Davis has return ... (spam)". I was expecting a pop-up graphic of some sort.

7:09 PM
If I dissble noscript and adblock I still see it. Nice and static.

Yes, it's a static web page. Looks handwritten.
Glad to hear I wasn't wasting Mr. Davis's time.
Looks like slrn is mostly dead anyway. Shame. It's a very nice program.
In a better world, people would use Usenet a lot more, and the morons and trolls wouldn't exist.

Or usenet would be less like usenet, filled with morons and trolls? :) I tend to see that popularity directly causes the downfall of public communities.

helps to have standards

in a better world people would have standards :D

I guess having mods would help. I don't recall that they existed in Usenet of old.
But it's built on the oldfashioned model of the internet, where everyone was supposed to be a technical person who wouldn't dream of spamming a forum.
Unfortunately, that is not the world we currently live in. But I recall the 1990s. It was much quieter then.

7:36 PM
@FaheemMitha I am told that in the 50s it was very quiet, hardly any problem at all.

@Isaac Usenet didn't exist in the 50s.

8:29 PM
@FaheemMitha Exactly !!! :-)
