1:14 AM
Did anyone else get an unusual batch of upvotes today? Maybe it's a new user going for one of the voting badges? It just seemed more targeted than the trickle of upvotes I usually get.

1:59 AM
@JeffSchaller Not me

2:18 AM
Must be my lucky day!

4 hours later…
6:34 AM
Good morning/afternoon, everyone. I see we are having a quiet weekend here.

6 hours later…
12:12 PM
Should I be scared? (Not saying I’m a saint, I just found the juxtaposition rather amusing.)

@StephenKitt I think that was a different Stephen.

@FaheemMitha yes, of course ;-).

I'm not saying you couldn't be a saint. But I hear it's the Catholic Church that decides. And they've been known to take their time.
Once upon a time there was a peasant girl named Joan. She got it in 1920.
Well, technically it was Jehanne.

12:33 PM
@FaheemMitha Not to mention the issue that it is only possible to talk about Saints using the past tense :-)

@fra-san I don't see why.

@FaheemMitha people have to die before they can achieve sainthood.

@StephenKitt That seems like an annoyingly restrictive criterion.

@FaheemMitha it mitigates the risk that a given person will be proclaimed a saint, and then behave in an unbecoming manner.

@StephenKitt The Nobel Peace Prize people might consider that, certainly.
Barack Obama being a case in point. There are many other examples.

12:41 PM
That would also save the Nobel people a lot of money, since there’s no point in giving money to a dead person...

Oh, and Kissinger too. That one is actually pretty funny, in a way.
@StephenKitt That's true. The savings would be enormous.
They should consider giving Donald Trump the Peace Prize. I am sure that would be a popular move.

1:41 PM
I was wondering what religions you guys have?
Stephen Kitt, do you have one?
I got food from St Stephen's Church

1 hour later…
3:12 PM
@Tim Is "I have no time for superstitious nonsense" an appropriate response?

there's probably a more polite way to put that :D

Do I need to reboot when modules are rebuilt?
@ilkkachu Probably. But I'm going with the Richard Dawkins School of Politeness.

that sounds like a bit of an oxymoron.

@ilkkachu That was me trying to be facetious.

yyep

3:37 PM
Have any of you had an issue where the keyboard doesn't work for a single application? (in my case Libreoffice, but has happened on other ones, like Firefox)
Unplugging doesn't help.
Only restarting the application helps.

4:12 PM
@Braiam Does it suddenly freeze up, or not work from the time the program is opened?

@FaheemMitha I've managed to isolate at least one instance where it happens.

@Braiam That doesn't answer my question.

And then I wasn't able to reproduce it anymore.
@FaheemMitha Because I don't know :)

Oh.
In one instance resizing a file choice menu for a browser froze the app. Possibly the whole computer. I can't remember - it's been a while. Possibly Chromium.

Yeah, thing is that it seems to be at random. Today was just getting in the way of work enough that motivated me to ask.
For example, copying from an application to another.
And now just copying from the same application :D

4:35 PM
@Braiam If it's not reliably reproducible, it would be hard to track down.
That resizing menu thing was reproducible for me. Might still be. But I didn't report it. I get tired of reporting bugs that are ignored, and this seemed like a particularly obscure one.
And people regularly ignore reliably reproducible bugs.

@FaheemMitha Au countrarie for me, people seems to be uninterested in bugs that seems like a pain to reproduce :D

@Braiam Well, that too.
@Braiam How are things looking in the DR?

4:51 PM
@FaheemMitha Government started allowing things to be personal again.
And I bought a fan because I couldn't deal with the temperature, and it decided to pour.

@Braiam I'm not sure what that means.

@FaheemMitha People going out to office.
Be with other people, etc.

@Braiam Oh. What's the virus situation like? It continues to get worse here.

@FaheemMitha Stable, but I know there's some lag on the information as I helped the guys that compile the stats.

@Braiam Are you sure it's not actually getting worse, but the govt isn't bothering to track it properly?
We're up to around 40k officlal cases here in Bombay.
That includes the people who have recovered, I think. It also includes people who are asymptomatic.
According to a list I just saw, our Ward has the second lowest number of cases, for what that is worth. Not that it will mean anything to anyone who isn't a local.

4:59 PM
@FaheemMitha It's more like labs are working at capacity and can't deal with the demand anymore.

@Braiam Oh, is that so? That's definitely not the case here.

Also, that there are studies that have found that nasopharyngeal test can't detect virus after 11 days.
So, you call and wait for your test, it's likely that your results are negative.

@Braiam Is that the standard virus test? Taking a nose or mouth swab? (I can't remember which.)

@FaheemMitha nose swab yes.
There's sputum and serology test. The later just test if you had the virus, and isn't very targeted last time I've read..

@Braiam I've heard getting a nose swab is fairly unpleasant, though I haven't had the experience myself.

5:08 PM
@FaheemMitha Yeah, they take a swab up to your nose and start moving. I've experienced it and I had phantom sensibilities the entire day :D

@Braiam They move the swab around, you mean?

@FaheemMitha Yeah, because they need a sample of what's up there.
It can take a solid minute if you don't stay put

@Braiam Ugh.
Sounds like there might be risk of damage. That area is fairly delicate.
I take it your test was negative.

@FaheemMitha But was about 3 weeks after my exposition :D
I could had it and never knew.

@Braiam Exposition?
You mean exposure?

5:13 PM
@FaheemMitha Yeah, it sounds like that in spanish

Ah. Well, in English exposition means explaining something, roughly speaking.
Possibly an etymological corruption.

English corrupting the source of a word? Color me surprised :D

No, perhaps not. It seems to be a relatively straight-forward Latinate word.
The root is something like expositio. But since I don't know Latin that doesn't mean anything to me.

6 hours later…
Tim
11:40 PM
I suspect people working in computer science or industry might be more religious than other sciences
Why? computer science is a formal science.
So I will not be surprised if Stephen has a religion
So does Faheem
mathematics is also a formal science. and statistics is pseudo-mathematics
Are catholic chapels always so splendid?
I tend to pay some attention to the architectures of churches.
