Anyone have experience with ettercap or wireshark? I'm getting a permission error when using ettercap. However I cannot run the program as root, as it needs to be run from user context

Sicne Ubuntu releases every six months, and Debian every two years, approximately.

Though I think Ubuntu releases are more fixed then Debian ones.

@Tim Also, Debian (in theory) supports everything. Ubuntu only supports some packages, and takes the rest from Debian.

Whether that metters to you, I don't know. It does mean, I suppose, that on unsupported Ubuntu packages, you can't file a bug report.

If you're using LTS there's not a huge difference, though, just a few months' offset at the moment

@FaheemMitha meh, that's kind of a classic graphics glitch. I wouldn't worry unless it keeps happening. And even then, I would guess it's a software driver issue and not hardware (but ask someone more knowledgeable if it does keep happening).

I guess processor speed hasn't improved much (if any) since 2013. Memory might be faster. But I'm just speculating.

@FaheemMitha My Macbook Air is from 2014. It complains about a battery "needing service", but it shows no signs of getting old any day soon. Laptops are usually more fragile than desktops.

Yes, I use it daily. I have not turned it off for a few years. All my machines are constantly on.

Like tonight for example. I need to debug a Perl program, and for that I need to install conda. That's easier on an Ubuntu system, so I'll log into one of our multi-user servers to do that.

I'm not really sure, but Perl could well be included in "and more"... Also, I have no clue about this project I'm debugging. It should be a really easy thing. I just need to reproduce it... which includes installing it, and its dependencies... which includes installing conda.

@FaheemMitha Asus laptop from 2012 here. Healthy, except for the original (rotational) HDD, which unsurprisingly has gone a long time ago (in 2016, I think).

So far the infection seems to be moving slower than one would have expected.

It won't work unless it's the exact same hardware.
