Anyone have experience with ettercap or wireshark? I'm getting a permission error when using ettercap. However I cannot run the program as root, as it needs to be run from user context
Nvm I got it now

@Tim Debian has everything Ubuntu has, but Debian stable is not as up to date.
Since Ubuntu is a Debian derivative.
But I don't think it makes much difference.

Debian stable is more up-to-date than Ubuntu 18.04, all the same
If you're already waiting two years...

@MichaelHomer I meant that the Ubuntu "stable" release is more up to date then Debian stable.
Sicne Ubuntu releases every six months, and Debian every two years, approximately.
Though I think Ubuntu releases are more fixed then Debian ones.
@Tim Also, Debian (in theory) supports everything. Ubuntu only supports some packages, and takes the rest from Debian.
Whether that metters to you, I don't know. It does mean, I suppose, that on unsupported Ubuntu packages, you can't file a bug report.

If you're using LTS there's not a huge difference, though, just a few months' offset at the moment

@MichaelHomer Ok.
@MichaelHomer Are you a Debian user? I forget.

Only for servers

6:18 AM
Ok.
@MichaelHomer How are you doing? I would feel safer in New Zealand right now.

I am good
You and the billionaires with bunkers

@MichaelHomer Glad to hear it.
@MichaelHomer I don't quite follow.

6:33 AM
@MichaelHomer Wow.

As places to be go, it's not so bad

@MichaelHomer What's not so bad?
> In 2016, Sam Altman, one of Silicon Valley’s most influential entrepreneurs, revealed to the New Yorker that he had an arrangement with Thiel whereby in the eventuality of some kind of systemic collapse scenario – synthetic virus breakout, rampaging AI, resource war between nuclear-armed states, so forth – they both get on a private jet and fly to a property Thiel owns in New Zealand.
It's nice to have a contingency plan. Though in this case, the virus probably wasn't synthetic. The article forgot to mention a Zombie Apocalypse, though.

@MichaelHomer Oh, NZ.
@MichaelHomer Do New Zealanders really refer to themselves as Kiwis?

7:05 AM
Sometimes

@FaheemMitha yes, you can

@StephenKitt Oh? I thought unsupported meant there was no point filing bug reports.

@FaheemMitha it means Canonical won’t help you with them, but others (including Ubuntu and/or Debian maintainers) might
and there’s a difference between “you can’t file a bug report” and “there’s no point filing bug reports” ;-)

@StephenKitt A minor difference, perhaps.
@StephenKitt Oh.
Do Debian maintainers monitor Ubuntu bug reports?

7:21 AM
@FaheemMitha right, for all practical purposes, from the point of view of the person experiencing the bug, the different is minimal indeed
@FaheemMitha some do (including me)

@StephenKitt Oh. Well, that's good.

I do however avoid spending time on bugs caused by Ubuntu, or bugs in my packages imported into the core set in Ubuntu

@StephenKitt Can bugs be caused just by being imported?

@FaheemMitha sometimes Ubuntu maintainer add patches; and bugs can be caused by other dependencies in Ubuntu
or in some cases by Ubuntu’s build infratructure

7:40 AM
I see.
Positive hits seem to be holding steady at around 3%, give or take.

@terdon not sure, I just typed the name without waiting

Good day :-) Can we reopen this question, as I have an answer for the "best version" part which is not in the duplicate ? I think it's quite valuable.

Q: Is it possible to run a command on Bash, and before it is done, run another command?

nonopolarityI created an alias ruby -run -e httpd -- -p 5000 . && open localhost:5000 so as to start up a web server and then open the page that is served by the server. But the second command won't run until the first command is finished. Is there a way to run a command, and then either start running a...

Maybe the Q can be edited to focus on that.

10:29 AM
For some reason, not all changelogs show up in apt changelog. Particularly experimental changelogs.

Tim
10:56 AM
@StephenKitt Does Debian support Wine and Windows programs well?
Good morning. Debian stable or testing or something else?
Is not supporting PPA an disadvantage of Debian?
Is not supporting packages which are not open source an disadvantage of Debian?
Will there be more package management problems in Debian than in Ubuntu?
Good good day!
@FaheemMitha I found subsetting in R is fascinating
Making sense out of it now

@Tim How is it fascinating?
@Tim Debian has backports.
@Tim No. Free software is Debian's raison d'être.
@Tim What is the question?

11:15 AM
@pLumo probably best to take it to meta, explaining what your answer would be and why it's different from what's on the dupe.
I guess you're suggesting something that's specific to the commands used in that question?

11:29 AM
@pLumo The question had already four reopen votes, and I added mine, reopening the question.
I will edit is as well.
Now edited to focus on the more difficult bit.

thanks! I added my answer ;-)

@pLumo Would it not be enough to say ruby ... | if grep -q ...; then open ...; fi? (untested)
or ruby ... | ( grep -q ... && open ... )

you wouldn't have the output of the first command
I'm trying with command | tee >(grep ...)
ah yes, that might work

11:45 AM
@pLumo Ah, yes, forgot about duplicating the output.

Is it bad if a window on the display (KDE DE) starts leaving a trail behind it, like an etch-a-sketch? Is that a sign the video card is failing, or something?
I rebooted, and it seems fine. But this is an old (or at least aging) computer.
Something not very dissimilar to what I see here - forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=298887
Maybe there was a kernel upgrade or something?

@FaheemMitha meh, that's kind of a classic graphics glitch. I wouldn't worry unless it keeps happening. And even then, I would guess it's a software driver issue and not hardware (but ask someone more knowledgeable if it does keep happening).

Well, there was a firefox upgrade...
@terdon Ok. I've seen it before, but not recently.
This computer was built in 2013. How long does hardware last these days, anyway?
I guess processor speed hasn't improved much (if any) since 2013. Memory might be faster. But I'm just speculating.

@FaheemMitha My Macbook Air is from 2014. It complains about a battery "needing service", but it shows no signs of getting old any day soon. Laptops are usually more fragile than desktops.

@Kusalananda Do you use it regularly? I guess Apple hardware is pretty good. And expensive.
Do you have a desktop too?
BTW, I'm a little surprised you use Apple. I wouldn't have guessed that.

Yes, I use it daily. I have not turned it off for a few years. All my machines are constantly on.
@FaheemMitha An iMac from 2014.
@FaheemMitha Huh, why?

4:23 PM
@Kusalananda I guess because it seems such a "commercial" choice. Not exactly what I would expect from a BSD user.

I also have two Lenovo laptops running OpenBSD.
@FaheemMitha Um, macOS is a BSD ;-)

@Kusalananda In a manner of speaking. Though don't you mean Darwin?

Yeah, I suppose I do.

@Kusalananda Are iMacs good?

(hold on, need to go away for a short while)
@FaheemMitha Yes, they are, like all Apple hardware (that I ever used), solid.
I'm no macOS power user. I use it for the GUI (Firefox, Slack, Zoom, etc.), and then I run the terminal from which I log into my OpenBSD machines. It's in OpenBSD I work.
... and occasionally on the company servers, running Ubuntu.
Like tonight for example. I need to debug a Perl program, and for that I need to install conda. That's easier on an Ubuntu system, so I'll log into one of our multi-user servers to do that.

4:40 PM
@Kusalananda Huh? There's conda fo perl? I thought conda was some sort of python thing.
> Package, dependency and environment management for any language—Python, R, Ruby, Lua, Scala, Java, JavaScript, C/ C++, FORTRAN, and more.
Apparently not. TIL!

@terdon The Perl code uses stuff managed by conda, I believe.
I'm not really sure, but Perl could well be included in "and more"... Also, I have no clue about this project I'm debugging. It should be a really easy thing. I just need to reproduce it... which includes installing it, and its dependencies... which includes installing conda.

@Kusalananda pretty sure the bug happens on a QWERTY keyboard, too ;)

@JeffSchaller Yeah, we've only had two reports of problems, and the common factor, apart from the error message etc., is that they are using QWERTY keyboards.
Ok, don't interrupt me now. Need to work!
;-)

5:08 PM
@FaheemMitha Asus laptop from 2012 here. Healthy, except for the original (rotational) HDD, which unsurprisingly has gone a long time ago (in 2016, I think).

@fra-san Did you put in an SSD?
I thought the lifetime of laptop HDDs was longer.

@FaheemMitha Yes, which indeed is the key to having it perform very well despite its age.

@fra-san SSDs rock.
@fra-san How is everyone coping? Looks like the curve is starting to level off.

5:32 PM
@FaheemMitha It should be, theoretically. But the one inside a laptop is probably a hazardous life, at least compared to the assumptions made by the people that write data sheets.

6:04 PM
@FaheemMitha Mixed signals. Infections are slowly slowing down, but restrictions imposed by the government are still ramping up.
The best part is that the number of hospitalized people in the hardest hit regions of the country is now declining.

6:16 PM
@FaheemMitha Thanks for asking. What are your feelings about the situation in India?

@fra-san Not good. But it could be worse. The govt seems to be trying to do its best. Which is fairly unusual for here. But I suppose they take their marching orders from the rich people, who don't want to get infected either.
Daily tests are going up to 20k a day. There is talk of going up to 100k a day.
It's unclear how things are going to play out.
So far the infection seems to be moving slower than one would have expected.
Of course, there is a lockdown in place, for the moment.
But things remain tense.

I found a laptop some people left. They couldn't make it start so gave it to the trash
I managed to install Lubuntu, and it works!
I am so glad
I have saved two laptops from trash so far

@Tim Left where?

Tim
Trash of the richer
But right now I am still using my very old broken T400
I have installed everything I need on my T400
Its internal wifi has stopped working for > 5 years
Its keyboard has stopped working for > 3 years
its usb ports except one have stopped working for > 5 years
I am focusing on learning stuffs on my very broken laptop

@FaheemMitha Facing a threat that is unambiguously a threat for everyone is rather unusual in most places, I guess.

8:07 PM
@Tim I'm curious. What model is this laptop? And it's still working?
@fra-san Not that unusual. Climate change and nuclear weapons both quality.
Actually, they're both rather more serious threats than a pandemic. Unless the pandemic is specifically engineered to be as lethal as possible, I suppose.

Tim
inspiron 15 7559 works like charm
seriously how shall I learn data science?

@Tim Oh. So why did they throw it away? That would be Dell, I suppose.

Tim
Is it good?
But right now, more laptops don't help me. I need to concentrate on studying on my old laptop

@Tim Is what good? The model? The company?
@Tim It's generally helpful to have non-broken hardware to use. I recommend it.

8:23 PM
@FaheemMitha thanks for your help, I've decided to take the stratedgy of successfully running a virtual machine with a Debian installation first then redo the install on my laptop

@AdamL Sorry, I forget the context.
Oh, were you having problems with a Debian installation? The GRUB command line thing?
It won't work unless it's the exact same hardware.
I'm not sure if a VM would be helpful.

@FaheemMitha Right, but the way people perceive (or allow themselves to pretend to perceive) those (very real) threats is not really homogeneous. At least, much less homogeneous than the feelings people have towards the coronavirus pandemic.

@FaheemMitha true but it will allow me to take screen shots of each step, making note of my selections so I can show that to everyone to eliminate the possibility its because im making a silly choice during install as opposed to it being hardware related

@fra-san Agreed. But it's not rational.

@FaheemMitha Agreed, too.

8:28 PM
@AdamL That's a good point, yes. Though I'd first recommend just trying an Ubuntu install to see if it goes through. At least then you can eliminate hardware issues.

No I already know I can easily install an ubuntu ive done that a lot successfully

@AdamL Oh. So to be clear, you can install Ubuntu on the same laptop you are having difficulty installing Debian on?

people have said I should install Kali but I had issues with freedom of browser selection on my kali VM, it was weird
Yes I have ruined and reinstalled 18.04 LTS on the same laptop several times

@AdamL No, no, no. Don't install Kali. Bad idea.

yeah I didn't like it

8:31 PM
@AdamL So you are just having problems with Debian installation?
@AdamL BTW, it's "I have run". Not "ruined".

@FaheemMitha "Ruined" works too, IMHO. That makes for a reason to reinstall.

@Kusalananda Hmm. Maybe so. I didn't think of that.

@FaheemMitha lol ok yes I have run an ubuntu install several times in the process of learning how to use regular expressions its only the Debian I have had an issue with

Tim
9:18 PM
so why choose debian over ubuntu?

9:41 PM
@FaheemMitha this was the first screen to mention GRUB
@Tim because it interests me

9:53 PM
@FaheemMitha yeah I am actually getting a very similar issue with the first Debian VM I attempted to make
I go to their website and see if there is an email I can send thru the screen shots etc

10:04 PM
well that sucks I signed up for their user forums and it said it sent me an activation code or whatever and I didn't receive one
and its the same style forum site as my math forum
