Anyone know what running a command in 'a user"s context' means? Does that mean as non-root?

@dustytrash I would interpret that as running a command as a non-root user, yes.
@dustytrash You are permitted to ask such questions. Just be sure to show the actual commands that you're entering and the verbatim error messages. If the error message says to run a command to resolve or fix something, you may want to mention that you have tried doing so, what happened etc. (or that you haven't, and why).

@dustytrash It's on topic here. And no, there is not another more suitable site. And what @Kusalananda said.

Do we have a canonical Q&A explaining why distro-provided packages often “lag behind” upstream versions, while still providing security fixes? Something to address questions such as

Q: Upgrading Apache from 2.4.6 to 2.4.41 on Centos 7

leo277I would like to seek some guidance on how to upgrade httpd 2.4.6 to 2.4.41 on centos 7. I realised there are similar questions but for RHEL7. The reason for upgrade is due to vulnerability CVE-2017-9788, CVE-2014-3523 for httpd-2.4.6. How should I go about upgrading the versions? Do I need to bu...

(see the comments there)

@StephenKitt None that pops up in my mind, but I haven't done a search.
... and I can't find a good one by searching either.

Yes, neither can I. I may just have to ask my first question...

Yay, it's that time of year again... OpenBSD just changed the 6.6-snapshot releases to 6.7-beta.

Good morning
I have some good news: my understanding about R has been in explosive growth
Looking forward to the first question of Stephen

@FaheemMitha So if I remember correctly, are you an advocate of Common Lisp?
Do you or anyone else know other prominent languages having similar OO systems as Common Lisp?

11:30 AM
@Tim I think CL is a very good language, yes.
@Tim Define similar. And why do you care?

Tim
12:10 PM
Because you have a good taste
of programming languages

@StephenKitt the best I've found so far are unix.stackexchange.com/q/404036/117549 and unix.stackexchange.com/a/211572/117549; neither of which are canonical across distros
(I had to wait until you were done searching in order to use your google-fu)

@JeffSchaller ah, that explains my sudden feeling of weakness

12:32 PM
@StephenKitt you can have it back; I'm back to doing other work :)

@Kusalananda "answered 1 min ago"

@JeffSchaller Yours was good to. Undelete it.

@Kusalananda no, I saw you using grep natively and went "duh -- that's much smarter & simpler" -- same idea otherwise, so no need for both

I'm getting an error: unable to open display :10.0 on a fresh debian install when running xhost local:root. Anyone have any ideas? post

My issue is solved now thanks to Stephen & Jeff.

@dustytrash I just repeated what GAD3R said ;-)

@StephenKitt Did that username autocomplete when you wrote it? If not, the user won't be pinged.

Much of the time my memory barely works - some days it's oddly good. I was just watching "The Imitation Game", and my mind threw a name back at me - "Christopher". From reading a biography of Alan Turing many years ago.
A sad story - he died of bovine TB at 19.
There's even a findagrave site with fairly recent photos - findagrave.com/memorial/140865246/christopher-collan-morcom

Is there any Wordpress developer I need your help, please.

@Umer There is a Wordpress SE site.

Hi chat, I am currently running Lubuntu 18.04, and now Lubuntu 20.04 is coming with LXDE replaced with LXQT and other changes that I am not familiar with.
I am wondering if switching to Debian is a good idea.
- If switching from Lubuntu to Debian, what will I gain and what will I miss?
- Which Debian + which desktop + stable/test/... installation is great?

I don't have a clear idea. The following is some considerations which might be relevant:
1. Light weight. Especially the desktop environment should provide convenience but no much more than necessary. I am fine in command line, but some
(Sorry for the bad formatting. Formatting in chat is different from the main site. I haven't mastered it yet)
To summarize,
1. shall I choose Ubuntu or Debian (Stable/Testing/...),
2. Shall I choose LXDE or LXQT or XFCE? (LXDE is said to be dead and replaced by LXQT. Will continuing using LXDE on 20.04 be problematic? Not sure which of LXQT and XFCE is mor e lightweight)
