@Tim You might as well "learn and adapt". Not that you are wrong, just that others are unable to understand you. Just saying.

Q: command date not respecting timezone

PhilippeI'm in git-bash on Windows 10 : ~$ locale LANG=C LC_CTYPE="C" LC_NUMERIC="C" LC_TIME="C" LC_COLLATE="C" LC_MONETARY="C" LC_MESSAGES="C" LC_ALL= ~$ date --version date (GNU coreutils) 8.31 Copyright (C) 2019 Free Software Foundation, Inc. License GP...

Is this "git-bash" thing part of WSL?

@terdon no, it’s MSYS2

If not, if it's just a bash running on Windows, then I think we should move this.
@StephenKitt which means?
Is there a *nix here somewhere?

it’s a POSIX layer for Windows, using MinGW-w64

@StephenKitt So WSL?

no, it’s not WSL
but the Q is more likely to get an answer on SU

10:06 AM
Yes, it does seem to be Windows specific. At least, I can't reproduce it here.

Regarding >this question<: Is unshare some Linux thing relating to namespaces?

@Kusalananda yes: unshare - run program with some namespaces unshared from parent

@JeffSchaller Oh, ok. I have no clue what so ever about namespaces. Thanks @StephenKitt too!

I was going to write more but Jeff beat me to it; since I had the link in my clipboard I thought I’d still paste it ;-)

Took 3 edits to get it right, too!

4:59 PM
Also, is it just me or do a lot of users have broken profile images recently?

@Kusalananda I'm not noticing that
so perhaps you're blocking external images, or FB images

@Kusalananda more and more people using Facebook images

No, I could see that image with the link.

I remember Rui introducing me to that behavior
perhaps your browser is blocking "third party" images of some kind

EFF Badger blocks them for me

5:04 PM
Ah, I know what it might be... I'm on Firefox, and I'm using the "Facebook container" extension.
Yeah, that's it.

@Kusalananda namespaces don’t actually have any impact here, it’s all about processes and the environment

If I run U&L "in the Facebook container" (whatever that actually means), then I see the missing profile pictures.
@StephenKitt Ah, ok, so the given answer is not barking up the wrong tree then.

@Kusalananda yeah, I think there’s more confusion in the question than is addressed in the answer, but it’s in the right copse at least

@StephenKitt one English point for copse

How do you get a 5.5-year network suspension?
@JeffSchaller thanks ;-)

5:11 PM
@StephenKitt want to find out?!?

@JeffSchaller not by experiencing it personally, no, thanks for the veiled offer

most welcome, just trying to help :)
I did happen across a random account this morning that was suspended until 2025; might be the same one. It wasn't suspended from U&L, so I don't have much more info

“This account is temporarily suspended network-wide. The suspension period ends on Sep 20 '25 at 17:03.”
For some value of “temporarily”...

@StephenKitt I didn't realise SE had suspensions that long.
SE might not be in existence in 2025.
Is it possible it's a bug?

@FaheemMitha want to find out?!?

5:14 PM
@JeffSchaller Want to find out what?

@FaheemMitha whether a the same veiled question works in a completely different context

@JeffSchaller Sorry, I don't follow.

Jeff is wondering whether you’re interested in seeing if, say, a 30-min ban results in a 5.5-year ban

@FaheemMitha it's not your fault, I was being ridiculous. Feel free to call this a conversational dead-end :)

One of those no-exit roads which also says “maneuvering difficult” at the entrance

5:16 PM
Yes, with the confusing tangent being whether you'd stick around for 5 years as well

@StephenKitt Oh, you mean whether I can trigger the bug? Not really, no. Thanks for the suggestion, @JeffSchaller.
@JeffSchaller I've been around for the last 5 years and longer, so sure, why not?
I suspect I might be here when SE shuts down.

@FaheemMitha want to find out?!?
I just can't help myself

It will be like that scene in "The Last Battle", when Aslan calls down all the stars in the sky.
@JeffSchaller I just said that I probably will find out.
And if you don't recognize the reference, ignore it. One of the remnants of a misspent childhood.

this is where the residents on the dead-end street start honking at the guy flying down it

@JeffSchaller what are they doing in their cars? they’re confined!

5:18 PM
@FaheemMitha sounds like it could be a Narnia reference?

@JeffSchaller Indeed it is.

@StephenKitt well, they started off in their houses, yelling out the windows, then I crossed some wires with the guy driving down the road

Sometimes conversations here are hard to keep up with.
@JeffSchaller The USA is really taking a beating. How are you doing wherever you are? It sounds like it's nice and sparsely populated, which is a plus.
Oh, and commiserations on your President.
This is a really nicely written medical summary. It seems that people in the UK can write English. Which is so gratifying.

sorry for the delay, I had to scratch the mental itch that was left when Stephen asked about that suspended user. I'm back.

And typed and everything.

5:24 PM
@FaheemMitha The part of the USA I'm sitting in is still intact. Weird times, for sure, with the shutdowns & isolations, but hopefully we emerge on the other side mostly unscathed.

Sadly Neodymium was spelt wrong, but one cannot have everything.
@JeffSchaller Glad to hear it. Perhaps some day you will tell us what state you live in.
It sounds like it's out West, where there is plenty of space.
Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam. Or words to that effect.
Though the buffalo don't roam there any more. They're probably extinct.

@FaheemMitha perhaps. For now, I live in a state next to one of the longest rivers in the world

@JeffSchaller Missisippi?

@FaheemMitha humans did a good job killing off most of them, but I think a few roam around in national parks
@FaheemMitha more esses :) Mississippi, but no
I live in de Nile

@JeffSchaller Ah, yes. Parks. Once I believe there were countless buffalo roaming the plains. And by humans you mean Europeans.

5:31 PM
@FaheemMitha well, this time I meant the Native Americans
though Europeans were probably more efficient at it

@JeffSchaller The Native Americans killed the buffaloes? That sounds unlikely.
They depended on them.

@FaheemMitha by killing them and using almost every part of them, yes. I didn't mean to imply that it was an extinction level

@JeffSchaller Well, they killed some of them, yes.

"most" being my mistake above

@JeffSchaller Then maybe the Missouri?
@JeffSchaller Huh?

5:36 PM
Today's not my day. That was a bad pun about "living in denial" against "the Nile"

@JeffSchaller That joke went over my head. You need to move in more highbrow circles.

@FaheemMitha it's unfortunately an English pronunciation joke, where "the" is sometimes pronounced "de". I'm 0 for 2.

Ghee, I'm tired. I keep misreading simple words. Now "You have to move your eyebrows in circles" and before that "One of the remnants of a misspelt childhood."

@Kusalananda good night :)

:-) I'll go away and do something else.

5:51 PM
@JeffSchaller Yes, I got that bit, but after the event. I'm aware that "the" is sometimes pronounced as "de".
@Kusalananda I probably shouldn't tell you that, but it's written "gee".
Ghee is how the Hindi word for clarified butter is written, for example.
@Kusalananda Please accept my apologies. Sometimes I can't help myself.

@FaheemMitha That's a remnant of my misspellt childhood.

@Kusalananda Alas.

Are filesizes stored in ints or longs?

11:26 PM
Any help to set up a startup script?
It's already written just don't know where to put it
