@Kusalananda stdbuf is the glibc one

@derobert That's probably true, I'm just repeating words of others. I haven't had to deal with these sorts of issues ever.

Jeff, there’s another illustrious ed user: Tom Lyon! See On the metal #4 around the 50 min mark.

@Kusalananda: I found a solution to that buffering issue
21
A: Turn off buffering in pipe

Wang HongQinYou can use long_running_command 1>&2 |& print_progress The problem is that libc will line-buffer when stdout to screen, and full-buffer when stdout to a file. But no-buffer for stderr. I don't think it's the problem with pipe buffer, it's all about libc's buffer policy.

damn but that doesn't work since it just spits out all data anyway :(

@StephenKitt rarified company! Yet Another Podcast for the feed...!

@Jesse_b That also looks like what you had already...

@Kusalananda Well I was redirecting stderr to stdout, not vice versa

@Jesse_b Ah.

The problem is as Stéphane points out in that answer, stderr never goes to the pipe

Any jenkins guys here?
I have a question

6:46 PM
@Jesse_b try script.... that should at least prevent re-ordering...
Something like script -fe -c COMMAND /dev/stdout | whatever ought to work...

@derobert I was looking at that but I don't think the script tool on illumos is the same as it is on linux
The only option my script(1) has is -a
But mosvy provided a solution: unix.stackexchange.com/q/562661/237982

@derobert: I spoke to HR about you today. Told them you are a violent ex-con

@Jesse_b Hah, but isn't it illegal to discriminate against those in CA? :-P

>.> Kidding. But they said they are forwarding your info to the head of the compute team

Cool. I hope to hear back from him/her.

We just interviewed someone for my department the other day who is in the army reserves and one of the people from my team kept asking a bunch of intrusive questions about it
I know that is a pretty protected thing that cannot be used to discriminate employment so it made me uncomfortable they were asking so much about it lol
I'm pretty sure you can't even legally ask someone if they are married so I would imagine asking a bunch of questions about their reserve status isn't kosher

7:28 PM
Yeah... someone didn't get the memo from HR on what questions not to ask.

So after all that work trying to process the output from that troublesome command I think I'm probably going to end up using an entirely different method altogether :(
