9:19 AM
Hello there

4 hours later…
12:56 PM
@Xxxo: Wat up =)
@Kusalananda @JeffSchaller @terdon: If any of you are around, xxxo wants to report me for being a bad person
I have to get ready for work, bbl

Dude, you again try to paraphrase what I'm writing. Can you quote the text that I wrote that you are a bad person or you are writing paraphrased text again?
This is a really bad practice. I mean, paraphrasing what other people are writing in order to try to prove yourself right. It is actually very bad.
If I'm wrong, you can prove it by quoting the text where I'm explicitly writing that you re a bad person.
If you cannot prove it, then you have to admit that you are using the above mentioned bad practice.
And this is the second time that you are using this bad practice against me. The first time you claimed that I'm saying that you are a bad person, without me having wrote that anywhere.
Again if I'm wrong, please quote the exact text where I'm writing what you are claiming. If you cannot, it is a matter of dignity to admit what you are doing.

1:15 PM
@Jesse_b To be honest, I think @Xxxo is absolutely right. For some reason, you came down on that question like a ton of bricks and then thought it was OK to come in here with a sneery attitude and attack a new user who's confused about site rules. I must say I expected better of you, man.
Granted, @Xxxo also seems to have taken it a bit personally, but I can't really blame them.

As far as I can see, the comments reads as being from two people that needs to sit back and a relax a bit. Both are taking it a bit too personal and neither is nice to the other.

If the situation is going downhill, just step away. OP could assume good intentions that Jesse is trying to help, and Jesse could disengage if there's a misunderstanding. The custom close reason wasn't necessary, and the edit summary was unnecessarily abrasive.
I am going to move the comments to a dedicated chat room. Neither of you are obligated to say anything more in it, @Xxxo & @Jesse_b
:52536142 they've been deleted from the question; once the chat room's work is done, it will go away

@JeffSchaller, the link to the chat room stays.

@ilkkachu that's true; I think the room just ends up being frozen

@JeffSchaller, while you're at it, can you remove my comments from the chat room? I can't do it myself.

1:26 PM
@ilkkachu sure

thank you.

you might still be pingable, not sure. but I deleted them
@ilkkachu I couldn't parse that; is there something else that's happening (or needs to happen?)

@JeffSchaller sorry, I meant that it doesn't matter if I'm pingable :)

@ilkkachu ahhh; good. Thank you

I still find it odd that a user can remove their comments at any time, but if the whole comment thread goes off the rails and gets moved to chat, then the user can't remove their comments any longer... :)
But that's The System for us to live with, sigh.

1:44 PM
@terdon Meh agree to disagree, I definitely didn't start it but I did contribute to it
Also I think snarky would more accurately describe my attitude. If I were being dismissive I wouldn't have directed them towards the correct channels to report me
@Xxxo If you have reason to report me than surely I am a bad person, no?

hey Jesse, this might be a good time to just cut your losses on this one. I haven't seen Xxxo continue any chat conversations.

I cut my losses after the first comment, everything after that I had no expectation of an understanding

by "cut your losses" I mean "forget that question exists"
Asking the OP -- especially right now -- if they think you're a bad person .... is just not going to go anywhere good right now
and it doesn't help the question, and it doesn't change anyone's opinion

@JeffSchaller It was a rhetorical question, I just wanted to explain why I rightly used that phrasing

@Jesse_b well, I appreciate that you wanted to be open to criticism & discussion, but let's stop pinging the OP for something that's off-topic from their question. I hope I've made it clear that the comments/discussion on a post should try to improve that post. Everything else is off-"topic".
This gets into my personal view of comments, which comes from things I've read on SE over the years, so that even comments that improve the post should self-destruct after the post is improved.
I'll also just take a moment to suggest that you were providing potentially Answer information in a comment, which can be helpful, or ... should go into an Answer. If it's neither of those, step away

2:01 PM
@Jesse_b I'm very sad to see that instead of admitting that I never wrote what you are claiming that I wrote, you are trying to project your assumptions as the objective truth.

@JeffSchaller That has been debated, successfully, in the past. IIRC it was determined that answers can go into comments for a few reasons. In this case I didn't actually have the answer, I just had some information that contributed to both the question and potential answer.

"If you have reason to report me than surely I am a bad person, no?"
Having said the above, I will try to advise you that the next time that you report someone, you should focus on what they are doing and do not try to do ad hominem attack. That is, focus on the erroneous behaviours in the context that you are involved and not generalise and say things like "bad person".
If you are doing something wrong, your action is wrong. This never means that you are X type of person.

Well I am in fact a bad person so feel free to assume as much

To be honest, I have no reason to care what kind of person are you and I cannot see any reason for you to impose that kind of caring to others/
I mean, I do not have any reason to care of what kind of person are you and you should not have any reason to try to make other random people that you meet online, to care of what kind of person are you. This concept that you seem to adopt, clearly shows that you were actually taking things personally previously and not answering objectively.
Which is actually in the concept of what I wanted to report.

Could the both of you leave it, please?

2:08 PM
Thank you, @Xxxo for trying to stay level-headed and focused on the question. I think @Jesse_b was trying to help (and I have no evidence they're a bad person) -- just that there was a misunderstanding of the question. Let's take a break here, take a deep breath.

@JeffSchaller I think this is an unfair assessment lol

@Jesse_b well, I did start to question your judgement in cutting trees down, but if it saves your marriage to use an axe instead of a chainsaw, I support you :)

@JeffSchaller I was referring to a different part of your statement but I'm trying to drop it

@Jesse_b fair enough; I'll do the same!

So on a lighter note I made a mistake recently that nearly deleted every one of my companies customer VMs

2:17 PM
that sounds like one of those career-limiting moves I've heard about

There was code that used all capital variable names and in the process of modifying it I changed all the capital variables to lowercase. Forgot one

@Jesse_b set -u to the rescue

@StephenKitt Thanks, good idea

After Stephen hits the rep-cap (2 hours into the day), he's forced to spill his good ideas over into chat rooms

Those days StackExchange feels like The Young and the Restless
2

2:23 PM
@Kiwy I thought it's the Bold and the Beautiful.

No, it's As the World Turns
oh; that one's ended, oops

all wrong, "Get Rich Or Die Trying"

So much drama going on !

Hat season could be interesting

@JeffSchaller it has more episode than The Young and the restless though

2:25 PM
@Kiwy I was just reading the Wikipedia pages; Y&R "First broadcast on March 26, 1973" and "was renewed for ... 2019–20"
I can only hope the SE drama lasts less than 50 years

btw someone knows how to correct a wikipedia page ? because they translasted the young and the restles by "jeunes et agités" which is a prural form and the young definitly is not a plural

As long as it doesn't become Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

@Kiwy I think I have an account, if I can remember the password

@JeffSchaller a renewed season ? omg got to watch it !

@Kiwy I don't know French, apart from what Stephen teaches me, but I'm logged in, if you want to point me to the page in question

2:28 PM

@Kiwy it's an adjective, I don't think it has distinct plural and singular forms. Without knowing the show, I'd think it refers to multiple characters

@Kiwy is there just one young person in the show?

Indeed, re-reading your comment, I do think "young" here is meant plurally

@ilkkachu @StephenKitt most likely a lot of non aging caracters

So a better translation would be « Les jeunes et les agités » IMO

2:30 PM
so they're (pl.) young :)

or if there’s no opposition between the two, « Les jeunes et agités »

"Les" is more

les is the plural of the
but there's no "the" plural

@StephenKitt that question probably gets at the heart of the show!
is it just the young who are restless? tune in next week to find out!

maybe it's meant in a more lirycal way and designated several persons

2:32 PM
@JeffSchaller from what I remember (25 years ago) it’s more about “is it just the young who have rubbish haircuts?”
and the answer is most definitely no

if it was just one young character (vs. multiple restless ones), I'd somehow expect the title to be more explicit about that...

@ilkkachu like Brisco County Junior

I think the setence :
"The Young and the Restless, littéralement « Jeunes et agités »"
Should simply be:
"The Young and the Restless, « Jeunes et agités »"
littérallement means that the translation is litteral and it's not as it's a thinked and reformulated translation

hmm, I don't know that, but a quick lookup makes it seem a bit interesting

@Kiwy right, but « Jeunes et agités » would be “Young and restless” in English; the current translation drops the “The” subtlety (although claiming the show is subtle is probably too generous)

2:36 PM
@StephenKitt it gets a lot of award throughout time you should watch the 11300 episodes before judging it :P

I'm no good at navigating Wiki history (particularly in French), but at one point it was "Les Jeunes et les Agités" so someone changed it

@JeffSchaller it's a better litteral translation, though a real litteral translation would be " le jeune et l'agité"
I calculated that it should take something like 2.5 months 24/7 watching to achieve such a goal...
I'm sure you can manage @StephenKitt

@Kiwy so there’s just one young person and one restless person in the show?

@StephenKitt I'm not discussing the show :D I'm discussing the fact that a litteral translation shouldn't interpret the terms it is translating

@Kiwy but it has to, because there isn’t a single litteral translation in this case

2:41 PM
then just remove the term literal translation and I'll be the happiest man now that the wiki page is properly redacted :D

> but it has to, because there isn’t a single literal translation in this case

@JeffSchaller ROFL

everyone's got a significant other in this episode :)

well in any way that show is so old at that point most actresses and actors must be mummies and walking deads

all I remember are Victor and Cricket
(my wife wanted to name one of our kids Cricket, and that show tilted me away from the name)

2:47 PM
so maybe we should rename the show the elders and the zimmers

> Initially a guest character who was to last for eight to twelve weeks ... the character was planned to be killed off and never heard of again ... but eventually signed a contract, and has remained on the series as a regular cast member for a total of 39 years
the drama behind the drama ... Cricket was the daughter of the series creators....wow
thanks for the throwback, Kiwy!

You're very welcome @JeffSchaller
I love adding to the drama

3:38 PM
Apropos of TV, has anyone watched "The Good Doctor"? Came across in on Amazon Prime Video.
It's on ABC in the United States, I believe.
I was interested because I read a lot about autism, but I don't really know what it's like. Though supposedly a lot of math people are on the spectrum.
In this show, the lead character is autistic. Though I don't know realistic his depiction is.

4:48 PM
Hello @FaheemMitha didn't see it.
Hope you're doing well

Hi @Kiwy. Well, could be worse. I hope you are doing ok.

@FaheemMitha how’s your banking situation?

@StephenKitt Unchanged. Thank you for asking. It's easy enough to search for. It's all over the Indian news. Even the BBC ran a short piece on it.
The Indian govt is handling it incredibly badly, but that's hardly news.
But it's certainly symptomatic, and may be indicative of worse things on their way.
There are also worrying developments in the telecom industry.
Though, as they say, that's another story.

@FaheemMitha so all the savings are just gone? :-(

I would have expected more international coverage of the bank thing, but there doesn't seem to be any. For example, the Guardian doesn't seem to have covered it, though they do quite a lot of Indian coverage.

4:58 PM
yeah a bank being shut down in the US or Europe would be major news

@StephenKitt Not exactly. The bank is sort of frozen, though the branches are still functioning. But it has assets. And the govt has seized assets from the real estate firm that was part of this scam. This real estate company owes the bank a lot of money.
But it's not clear what's going to happen.

@FaheemMitha ah, right, so there’s still hope, at least for those who don’t need immediate access to their money

The Indian govt bails out Indian govt and commercial banks, which are also very prone to fraud. Often in secret, and possibly illegally. But they are not doing it here. For reasons that are unclear.
@StephenKitt Hard to say. It sounds to be like money could be recovered eventually from the people who owe the bank, but possibly not in a reasonable timeline.
The sensible thing would be for the Indian govt to announce a bailout. But Modi and his gang only help his rich friends, I think. And are remarkably brazen about it.
They also don't seem to like the cooperative sector. Maybe it's too democratic/socialist for fascists like the BJP. At least, that's my working hypothesis. Though it doesn't seem like the other Indian govts handled things very differently.

@StephenKitt we have some young women hiding text, now! unix.stackexchange.com/questions/552002/…

@JeffSchaller ha yes

5:18 PM
@StephenKitt Do you know of any service which provided email lists free to "deserving" causes? I did a search, but didn't see anything promising.
I was thinking of something for coordinating this bank thing. They are just using stuff like Whatsapp and Telegram currently. There's riseup, but doesn't quite fit.

@FaheemMitha riseup.net
Oops didn’t read all the way to the end

5:37 PM
@StephenKitt I don't think riseup really fits. What do you think?

@FaheemMitha maybe not for a list dedicated to discussion of a particular bank
but you could scope it more generally

@StephenKitt I assume I have to convince some riseup admin?

@FaheemMitha yes

Hmm. Might be worth a shot.
@StephenKitt "Scope it more generally". Suggestions on how?

@FaheemMitha political action around the Indian government’s handling of banks

5:41 PM
@StephenKitt Ah. Good call.
Anywhere else that I might look?

@FaheemMitha there aren’t many free mailing list hosts any more (ignoring Google Groups)

@StephenKitt Agreed; there aren't. Were there, once?
I suppose before the rise of spam, the administration of mailing lists was a lot easier.

@FaheemMitha at least in the UK and France it was fairly common for ISPs to offer to host mailing lists
now they don’t even offer mailing list hosting as a paid service

@StephenKitt Oh. "was"?

or at least not functional mailing list hosting

5:44 PM
@StephenKitt Oh. Bummer. Because of spam?

@FaheemMitha no, because of the countermeasures: DMARC etc.

@StephenKitt countermeasures? Oh, authentication.

@FaheemMitha no, requiring that mail from a given address come from “official” mail hosts for that address
which requires rewriting sender addresses when mail goes through a mailing list

@StephenKitt Ok. Should I be setting that up for my domain? Have you? And would it make it impossible for people to spoof emails as coming from my domain?

@FaheemMitha I haven’t, but you might want to; I’m not sure how much cooperation from your ISP is needed
DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance) is an email authentication protocol. It is designed to give email domain owners the ability to protect their domain from unauthorized use, commonly known as email spoofing. The purpose and primary outcome of implementing DMARC is to protect a domain from being used in business email compromise attacks, phishing emails, email scams and other cyber threat activities. Once the DMARC DNS entry is published, any receiving email server can authenticate the incoming email based on the instructions published by the domain owner within...

5:50 PM
@StephenKitt I should make a note.
BTW, does anyone here use notetaking apps? I'm a Neanderthal, so I save notes in my email, as a separate folder.

I must be a pre-neanderthal, because I use pen & paper
and email. and my phone. and google drive. and stack exchange. and files in various UNIX accounts.
I'm also not very smart.
as usual, I'm aware of smarter ideas, but am not smart enough to corral all my usages into one tool

I use evernote occasionally but mostly just use sticky notes
(literal sticky notes, not the windows app)
evernote is pretty annoying and leaves a lot to be desired. Also there is some magical key combination that I frequently hit accidentally that will send everything in my clipboard to evernote and I've never once wanted that, but because of it I have hundreds of untitled notes that are just random crap with no context

@JeffSchaller @Jesse_b I was thinking of something electronic. Is evernote a program? I should try not to use the term app. It's too redolent of Windows. Or phones.

I used to use Google Notebook (RIP)

@FaheemMitha Yes evernote is a program (or application)

6:04 PM
@JeffSchaller I make paper notes too. I have a notebook. But I had in mind a computer program.

note-taking is too broad for me to solve, personally. Is it "who sent me holiday cards last year?" or "remember to look for this interesting podcast" or "call Grandma tomorrow afternoon" or "my new neighbor's name is Rick"

For anything work related I normally make myself a JIRA ticket to remember whatever it is I need to do

@JeffSchaller Well, a good program would have organizational abilities. That's the point. Probably hierarchical.

@JeffSchaller Does Rick own a chainsaw?

Maybe using tags, a la SE. I used to think tags were simple-minded, but they work pretty well on SE.

6:08 PM
evernote allows for tags

@Jesse_b don't know, yet! Met him on Halloween, so all I know is that he owns a mask, a fire pit, and a small canopy

also the notes are organized under "notebooks"
FWIW I think evernote is one of the best note taking programs I've used but that isn't a very high bar

@Jesse_b I should ask if he has a pet monkey, though (mental note)

:)

@Jesse_b Also doesn't run on a free platform (unless one wants to call Android free).
> Evernote is cross-platform, for Android, iOS, macOS, and Microsoft Windows.

6:10 PM
Ah, sorry then. Yeah I use it on mac

From the Wikipedia page. Does anyone know of something similar that does?

I made a note taking app in node.js for a class once

@Jesse_b Do you use it?

@FaheemMitha No

@Jesse_b Ok.
I guess I could try to get more familiar with org mode.

6:13 PM
According to github it's not secure either because it uses a version of mongoose that has a vulnerability.
I've been toying around with the idea of making a note taking script though

exec cat > $1

Org mode seems to be quite widely used.

Tim is about to get a ton of rep

Yay for Tim!

@Kusalananda hooray for Tim
as the blog post says

6:22 PM
@Jesse_b ?

Sara Chipps on November 13, 2019

In my very first blog post, I wrote about what a personal experience taught me about the Stack Overflow community. I said we were going to step back and re-evaluate how we deliver feedback, how we can improve content quality, and how we can reduce friction between people. I said that our goal is to have the question asking process be painless and beneficial for new people and Stack Overflow veterans alike.

During this re-evaluation period, we noticed something in our reputation reward system. We give anyone who receives an upvote on an answer ten additional reputation points, but only give five reputation points to people who receive an upvote on a question.  …

Pretty much everyone's rep will go up but I imagine Tim will see the biggest change on this site by far

Oh. Well, people don't seem to like to upvote questions, regardless.
Not sure it's a good idea to tinker with rep like that.

Interesting that it's a blog post and not a Meta post (as far as I can tell)

I wonder how it will work in regards to daily limits
or if that will be taken into account (it may actually be covered in the post I skimmed it)

@Jesse_b I believe the daily limit will be taken into account when the rep is recalculated. I think they are running the recalculation as a sort of "simulation" so that daily rep caps would come into effect.
I just pulled that out of my own arse, so don't quote me on that.

6:35 PM
I don't think it would matter for me anyway, most of my questions have 2 upvotes or none
if there is no daily rep cap, Tim should get 12K rep just from his top 30 questions (out of 1400+)

6:56 PM
Wasn't there some meta discussion a few days back about how increasing the rewards for questions is a bad idea? I mean, that the general opinion seemed to be so.

@ilkkachu Like I said, I'm not sure messing with the rep system is a good idea.
It's a fixed and settled thing. People are used to it. It works.

Any org mode users here?
I can't even remember who uses emacs here.
@ilkkachu It's nice how SE strives for consensus before implementing something.

@JeffSchaller Probably because the network users can't downvote a blog post.

@ilkkachu probably exactly that
@FaheemMitha sseñor terdon does, I believe

7:04 PM
@ilkkachu Resistance is futile

@Jesse_b I think that's the Borg motto.

Especially given that the person who signed that blog post has a somewhat impressive record in meta question scores...

@ilkkachu Impressive how?
Oh, lots of upvoted questions?

@FaheemMitha -2122 score on their only Meta question: meta.stackexchange.com/users/139284/sara-chipps?tab=questions

@JeffSchaller I must be looking in the wrong place.

7:08 PM
Was it even their only post? Oh dear, I hadn't realized that.

I imagine one of the post-mortem meetings concluded "future posts from management should be in blog posts"
what's the difference? The people in charge are in charge, no matter what the vote

It isn't as obvious that they are going against the wishes of the community if there is no vote

Until they delete Meta, or everything in it, there's meta.stackexchange.com/questions/337843/…
the owner of one of those posts, and former SO mod:
I think you'd better get used to the idea that community participants no longer have any ownership or say in their communities (if, in fact, they ever did). You don't have to take my word for it. All you have to do is spend a few minutes looking around on this meta site to see that. — Robert Harvey 29 mins ago
keep in mind this is someone that stepped down recently

Actually I was a bit surprised that post was still there. That it hadn't been deleted. It's a bit hard to follow all of that shitstorm, what with the lack of threading between posts and the sheer amount of them, but what little I've read I've understood there have been some posts deleted that were related to the recent events.

Q: Should the weight of question upvotes be increased network-wide?

Robert HarveyStack Exchange has expressed an interest in increasing the reputation earned from question upvotes from 5 to 10 on all sites. Do you think this is a good idea?

Ah, ilkkachu already posted that.

7:15 PM
@Wildcard as did I, later (unwittingly)

Does anyone have the ability to see how many downvotes are on those answers? I wonder if there is any community support at all
Personally I don't think it's that big of a deal but I also can see the purpose of answers being worth more

When did SE became a daytime soap?
2

The change (as mentioned in the blog post, without a link) dates back to 2010. meta.stackexchange.com/q/42769/307622

well, it would be interesting to see the up/down votes on that (and the answers to it)
at least on a quick look, that post implies that the change was considered, in public, back then.

@ilkkachu I've got the rep needed on Meta to see up/down votes. Which one are you asking about?

7:19 PM
it's just a number, but perhaps they believe it will be more "welcoming", although the blog only refers to "improve content quality, and how we can reduce friction between people", in which I don't see a connection to 5 rep

meta.stackexchange.com/a/338117/158763 - Apparently 1984 is alive and well.

@Wildcard I meant that 2010 post you just linked. Jesse probably meant some other post

@ilkkachu +17, -19. Shog's answer is +59, -3.

I would be interested in both that one and the Robert Harvey one

@Wildcard wait what? it shows me a net score of +56 for the question itself (as well as Shog's answer)
@FaheemMitha 1984 would be saying "upvotes on questions have always given 10 rep"

7:23 PM
@ilkkachu Oops! I meant +75, -19. (Although it just changed to +76.) Don't know how I mistyped that.
@ilkkachu I just found this gem: meta.stackexchange.com/a/43418/307622

@Wildcard ok thanks :)
so yeah, not completely without opposition back then, but clearly on the positive side

@ilkkachu And if you calculate the reputation earned by that question, counting upvotes as worth +10 and downvotes as -2, then it's VERY positive. ;)

eh

@ilkkachu Sure, but I had in mind the memory hole thing.

@FaheemMitha Visit web.archive.org/web/20191023011602/https://… and scroll down to the answer with score 880 and you can read an interesting discussion on "Orwellian" in the comments. Shog's objection to it is now extremely ironic, in light of how this whole thread was deleted.

7:30 PM
@ilkkachu Though I agree Orwell comparisons are a bit overused in general.

I got 71 upvotes for my comment, now lost in the mass history purge...er, I mean in the sands of time.
"In a way, the worldview of the Party imposed itself most successfully on people incapable of understanding it. They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening. By lack of understanding they remained sane."

@Wildcard That paragraph could be the epitaph of the human race. Though there will probably be nobody to construct it.

The thing that most comes to mind from 1984 (to me) is the rewriting of history. And I don't think SE has done that yet. Rewriting history and newspeak, of course, but I don't really see that here either.
(well, unless we count deleting that post. But I understood they did that when posting a renewed version and actually admitted to deleting the old one)

@ilkkachu "Zeal was not enough. Orthodoxy was unconsciousness."

@ilkkachu Well, there's a fair amount of GoodThink being propagated.

7:37 PM
@FaheemMitha in comparison to what? pics.me.me/… :P

@Wildcard Well, they're overused, in the sense of used when not strictly appropriate.
Or when some other comparison would serve as well, or better.
1984 isn't the only dystopian novel ever written, after all.

that pic reminds me of this comparison between 1984 and BNW: imgur.com/gallery/SCqMXYO

Brave New World is a good novel. Though Huxley didn't give as much thought to it.
As I mentioned here (I think) some time ago, it has a description of something that is recognizably a rock concert at a time when such a thing didn't exist.

uuh :)

"Amusing Ourselves to Death" is also a good book. I have a copy somewhere.

7:44 PM
My favorite book is "Too fat to fish"
followed by "Steal this book"

I have BNW on my book pile. I started reading it some time back, but drifted away for one reason or another. But at least at that part the writing style was a bit confusing, it jumped from one character to another between every paragraph or two.
well, that's just stupidity on part of the reader if they're incapable of following that, but it took some getting used to, at least.

@ilkkachu It's pretty readable. And quite short. I'd give it another try.

yeah, it's the next one up on my pile, I just raised it up.
(yes, I have a pile of books to read. not even an orderly stack, but a pile)

There are lots of books.
Life was simpler, back in the days of the cavemen.
Your reading matter was the cave paintings.
Also, no Netflix.
Apparently that comparison is from Postman's book. It sort of rings a bell, but I don't really remember it.
But the modern world has aspects of both.

8:29 PM
@ilkkachu that's a good comparison, I like it.
Looking for the image I posted earlier, I found this one also: pics.me.me/…
:)

ahahaha

I particularly like the:
> SO, Inc, owes you exactly zero input in how the platform operates. You should be glad they've given you a platform to interact with in the first place.
He forgot to add: "ho, slave" to that.

9:09 PM
@Jesse_b My favourite at the moment, because it's so odd, is Eunoia.

9:29 PM
@Kusalananda Seems over my head

9:40 PM
I have a hard enough time with comprehension when all vowels are available for use

@Jesse_b You see? Too many vowels!

:p I don't think that is the reason

Duh

@Jesse_b you might like this plan: guidetogrammar.org/grammar/twain.htm

This question should probably be answered by someone who has actually looked at the relevant source code: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/551896/…
... alternatively, someone who just knows a lot.

9:44 PM
Stephéne knows
@Wildcard At first I was on board but by the end it started looking like German and I had WW2 flashbacks

10:04 PM
Did they recalculate the rep already? I think I got mine
Tim didn't get his yet I know that

@Jesse_b It'll take a few hours. meta.mathoverflow.net/questions/4383/…

@FaheemMitha and that comment's directed at someone who has over 50 k rep and hundreds of answers posted on two different SE sites. Though the person who wrote that comment doesn't seem to have anything to do with SE itself.

@Kusalananda Ah cool so it is actively happening then

@Kusalananda looking at an strace, the shell just sits on wait() when a process is running in the foreground. I can't think of what else it might need to do.

@ilkkachu Yeah, that part is the easy bit.

10:15 PM
but I can't remember how the terminal signal handling goes, argh

@ilkkachu Nobody does :-)

hehe

I'm also wondering whether systems differ.
But they shouldn't do...
... because POSIX.

There is quite a long discussion in the rationale for fork

10:34 PM
@Kusalananda why am I getting all my "Yearling" badges showing up in notifications?

@Wildcard I got some too. I dunno. Side effect of rep re-calc?
The Yearling badge usually does show up in the notifications, but it's suspicious that they do so for many people just now. So I'd say it's possibly a bug related to rep. point recalculations.

@Kusalananda I posted a question about it: meta.stackexchange.com/q/338168/307622

10:53 PM
Oh that was you

@JeffSchaller :D

I sometimes know how to read!

@JeffSchaller :-)

answered in the comments?

11:53 PM
Odd. The --reject-with flag for iptables is missing from the man page, although it shows up online.
