hello!
xfce keeps freezing on my wife's computer after an hour's usage or so. Mouse keeps moving, but everything else is frozen. Suggestions?
(16GB memory, 8 processors, all very underutilized.)

1:20 AM
ok, disabled hardware acceleration, now the screeen is pretty bright... too bright...
xgamma has no effect...

5:34 AM
@AaronHall I swear I read "xkcd"... so I couldn't make sense of it.

6:02 AM
@AaronHall Obvious question - is there anything in the logs?

4 hours later…
9:58 AM
@FaheemMitha No

@Paṇḍyā Well, much more information is now available. I've been reading the (contentious) LWN thread about it.
There's also a recent interview by Stallman here, which is quite interesting - theregister.co.uk/2019/09/17/richard_stallman_final_interview
I was just looking at it.

12:07 PM
@FaheemMitha I don't know where the logs are, can you tell me?

12:54 PM
@StephenKitt "there’s not much point trying to have a discussion" Indeed. You should be ashamed of yourself. And that's all.

@qubert why? Because I’m not a manly man who insists that no one should say anything negative about any other man?

1:41 PM
@qubert just so you know, I've read the transcript and I'm afraid I really don't understand what your position is. I have a strong suspicion that a lot of context is getting lost in translation in this discussion you've been having with Stephen.
Note that I'm not saying I disagree with your position. I am saying I honestly do not know what that position is. I can't understand what you have written.

Is there any repository or package full of many scripts to test every escape sequences in any terminal? For example, this gist.github.com/hSATAC/1095100.

3:41 PM
@AaronHall I suppose these days, systemd is the way to go.
So, see for example:
336
Q: How to see full log from systemctl status service?

10robinhoI check service status with systemctl status service-name. By default, I see few rows only, so I add -n50 to see more. Sometimes, I want to see full log, from start. It could have 1000s of rows. Now, I check it with -n10000 but that doesn't look like neat solution. Is there an option to check ...

If you happen to not be using systemd, then /var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages should cover it.
Though I think looking at both is redundant, because one includes the other. But right now, I can't remember which way it goes.

4:28 PM
@terdon wrt "lost in translation": No need to give me any "friendly hints": I already know that mods are able to access the IPs and emails of the users.
s/emails/email addresses/ above

4:45 PM
@qubert hmm? Why is that relevant? Why would I want your email or ip address?
You just seem to be very angry about something to do with Stephen's statements on RMS and I honestly don't understand what position you are defending. I am guessing it has something to do with the language barrier.

@jwenting: It hardly matters. The position of the White House has been, very consistently, that the law is not actually the law and they don't have to follow it anyway. — Kevin 18 hours ago
Well said.

I don't think there's any ambiguity about the position qubert is taking, Be Nice just prohibits us from (openly) speculating about why

11:32 PM
@terdon I'm defending sex abuse and pedophilia, of course. That's what pointing out LYING AND SLANDERING means these days. As is preventing cretins from joining lynch mobs.
@terdon "Why would I want your email or ip address" You're in a better position to know that. I'm no mind reader -- I can only notice and analyze your actions.

I don't think there was any hint there, honestly. The phrase "lost in translation" doesn't imply any literal translation is involved, if that's what you're thinking
