@FaheemMitha So, dunno how it happened, but my mousepad appears to functioning normally again...big update last night with some Xorg stuff and some kernel stuff getting updated, guess it's fixed now, hopefully.
gotta re-read my question and see if all my issues are fixed.

@Ungeheuer That's good. But it would be better if you knew what happened.

1:11 PM
@FaheemMitha I'm gonna try to make time to read the changelogs, maybe they addressed an Elan touchpad issue. Some things are still kooky. libinput is still wrong a bit, I still can't have my touchpad disabled on typing, and even if I wanted to get rid of the "area" touchpad functionality, it won't let me choose something like "left click only".

@Ungeheuer Try writing to the author of the changes.
Assuming you can isolate what changed.

That's a good idea!

Might be hard to figure out who changed what. Plus, no guarantee anyone will reply.
But worth a shot.

1:26 PM
@Ungeheuer please file bugs on libinput, see the libinput page for details. The people working on the input tools are interested in bug reports because the whole idea is to make it work out of the box everywhere...

2:23 PM
@StephenKitt Sounds like a plan. I should have suggested that, except I don't know what libinput is.

Oh yeah, try gimp today and opening a PNG causes it to segfault. Yeah for testing/unstable :-/
Of course, first step before reporting a bug is to check if it's a deb-multimedia issue. (Because why wouldn't dmo rebuild various gimp things? Which no doubt I've forgotten to set apt preference to prevent from installing)

@derobert Yikes, you use dmo?
I stopped using that years ago.

I still do. Not sure if I really need to anymore, though.

@derobert I'd recommend against it. That guy does not play well with others.

Well, depends on if I still need anything that is excluded from the Debian packages. Less work than building and installing all that from source. (Though on this machine, I think they only thing I ever want is ffmpeg, so I should probably move that to a container.)
Of course, once I move it to a container, building ffmpeg from source is easily automated ...

4:47 PM
@derobert I think most of his stuff is available in Debian.
That wasn't always the case. There was that debacle a few years back. Though now I cannot even remember the details.

I wonder how much more performance I'd get out of ffmpeg building it locally. Could build to target specific CPU, instead of lowest-common-denominator.

@derobert Not much. That's Gentoo thinking. That way lies madness.

@FaheemMitha Well, no. Gentoo thinking is you do that for everything. It's critical that vim get back to waiting for your typing 1µs faster. That's silly. But making a program that easily pegs every core you have at 100% for hours 10% faster makes a lot of sense.

@derobert Well, I'm sure you know more about it than I do, so I'll take your word for it.
It pegs every core for hours? What do you do with it?

Video encoding

4:58 PM
Ah. You mean, from other archive formats. Or converting video from one form to another?

Mostly one format (say, MPEG-2) to others (like H.264 or H.265)
But also doing video transformation (e.g., deinterlace, cutting) in the process.

@derobert Fancy.

That can easily run at slower than realtime, depending. So 4 hours of video may mean pegging every core for 6 hours.

@derobert I hope you have a dedicated machine? Is this for work?

No, for home. I re-encode stuff I've "recorded" from over-the-air TV.
("recorded" because that seems a silly word for dumping the digital data to disk.)

5:03 PM
@derobert you could be taping it!

@JeffSchaller Hah, only if I had a tape drive at home

VCR -> ffmpeg -> LTO
then you might not need to recompile ffmpeg!

@derobert Oh. Why?

@FaheemMitha Much easier to keep things you want to when they're re-encoded to a modern codec, because they're much smaller. OTA TV here still uses MPEG-2, for the most part.

@derobert Oh, a size issue. How much does it shrink?

5:08 PM
@FaheemMitha To less than half the original size, depends on source material.

@derobert Oh, that's not bad.

Hmm. mythtv is not in Debian.
Or whipper.

5:32 PM
@derobert try snapper?

@JeffSchaller Link?

Whippersnapper or "whipper snapper" is a young, impertinent person. It may also refer to: Whippersnapper (band), an English folk group "Whipper Snapper", a song by LaVern Baker Whipper-snapper, another name for Stunner (professional wrestling), a wrestling move The Whippersnapper, the 1970s advertising mascot for Kellogg's Corn Pops...

I don't think apt can install that... :-/
Yeah. Got all the dmo stuff removed, and gimp still segfaults :-(

guess it needs some more a(p)titude

Maybe aptitude could, if it had Super Cow Powers. (But it doesn't, alas)
Well, bugs.d.o has plenty of bugs filed about gimp crashing. Apparently I need to upgrade gegl to sid's version to fix.
... and indeed that worked.
Moral of the story, read b.d.o first

5:46 PM
Almost reads like a jabberwocky poem: read b.d.o to find the fix is to upgrade gegl to sid to keep the gimp going

Tim
I'd appreciate some help
Can my recently deleted post on SO get some undeleted vote? stackoverflow.com/questions/2024658/field-has-incomplete-type/…
Thanks in a bunch :)

@overexchange Reading newspaper is more efficient than watching the TV news.
Reading news through RSS where you only grab and filter what you're interested in (E.g. No politics nor sports in my case) is even more efficient.

@JeffSchaller lol

@JeffSchaller Starred!
@StephenKitt Learn a foreign language, preferably with another alphabet (Like Russian), then write Slang English in that language and use that as a password. Ensure password is 20 chars long.
There! a password even the NSA cannot crack!

On an unrelated topic, weird product names will soon have our question titles at Arqade levels of trolling: PXE boot a computer using Ironic Bifrost
thought the nonsense names sounded familiar :)

@derobert :D :D :D
There is a relevant XKCD for any and all situations...

It seems so.

6:50 PM
Hmmm. National Weather Service web site has been giving a bunch of "An error occurred while processing your request. Reference #(several numbers)" recently. I wonder if that means they're waiting to see if the President has his sharpie out before delivering the forecast.

7:00 PM
@derobert was it a 506 "Variant Also Negotiates", a 417 "Expectation Failed", or a 307 "Temporary Redirect"? Hope you didn't get a 418...

Hah, I'm OK with the President spending all his time with fiddling with the White House teapot. But I didn't check the HTTP code, Firefox doesn't display it normally.

@derobert I assume that's a reference to something.

@FaheemMitha yes... Google will give you pictures.
Maybe it wasn't a Sharpie, though. It appears he sells Official Donald J. Trump Fine Point Markers. So maybe he uses one of those.

Is that the Dorian thing?

yeah

7:09 PM
@derobert Oh, that's not a joke - about the markers.

@FaheemMitha Nope, when I checked Google to be sure it'd provide images... I found out about the markers...

Also straws.

Scary thing is, just think if he advertised the markers as "Make Weather Forecasts Great Again" how many he'd sell...
I mean, I'd be almost compelled to buy a set :-(

@derobert You could get one of those hats.

@FaheemMitha and what, sharpie on it "elect anyone else"?

7:21 PM
@derobert You could put it on your favorite scarecrow.

I have no idea if the crows support him or not. They might, being government drones and all.

@derobert Well, he is for the birds.

7:39 PM
@derobert I was meaning to ask, since you know more about this kind of thing than I do. How come one individual can change import duties/taxes overnight and so forth? Isn't that something which Congress would have to decide over time.

@FaheemMitha Because Congress passed laws that let the President do that.
Why they did, not entirely sure. Politics could probably help there...

@derobert When was that? Sounds like a bad move.

Would have to look them up, there have been a couple of different laws he's used. I don't think any of them were recent.

@derobert Oh. Doesn't the Constitution put limits on that kind of thing?
Amazon Prime Music has a surprising amount of stuff. I didn't think it did at first.

@FaheemMitha Only in very limited ways. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondelegation_doctrine

7:45 PM
Setting duties does not strike me as an executive power.
It's legislative, if anything is.

3 hours later…
10:45 PM
Is anyone familiar with refind here ? Have some problems with manual entrys and the pop os distro :/
What exactly do i need to reference as the loader for the pop os distro in refind ?
My manual entry looks pretty empty currently due to this lack of knowledge : menuentry PopOS{

loader ?

enabled

}
Any i couldnt find anything about this... so i hoped someone could spend a few minutes helping me to solve this annoying issue :)
