@FaheemMitha I'm gonna try to make time to read the changelogs, maybe they addressed an Elan touchpad issue. Some things are still kooky. libinput is still wrong a bit, I still can't have my touchpad disabled on typing, and even if I wanted to get rid of the "area" touchpad functionality, it won't let me choose something like "left click only".

@Ungeheuer Try writing to the author of the changes.

@Ungeheuer please file bugs on libinput, see the libinput page for details. The people working on the input tools are interested in bug reports because the whole idea is to make it work out of the box everywhere...

Oh yeah, try gimp today and opening a PNG causes it to segfault. Yeah for testing/unstable :-/

Of course, first step before reporting a bug is to check if it's a deb-multimedia issue. (Because why wouldn't dmo rebuild various gimp things? Which no doubt I've forgotten to set apt preference to prevent from installing)

Well, depends on if I still need anything that is excluded from the Debian packages. Less work than building and installing all that from source. (Though on this machine, I think they only thing I ever want is ffmpeg, so I should probably move that to a container.)

Of course, once I move it to a container, building ffmpeg from source is easily automated ...

I wonder how much more performance I'd get out of ffmpeg building it locally. Could build to target specific CPU, instead of lowest-common-denominator.

@FaheemMitha Well, no. Gentoo thinking is you do that for everything. It's critical that vim get back to waiting for your typing 1µs faster. That's silly. But making a program that easily pegs every core you have at 100% for hours 10% faster makes a lot of sense.

Mostly one format (say, MPEG-2) to others (like H.264 or H.265)

But also doing video transformation (e.g., deinterlace, cutting) in the process.

That can easily run at slower than realtime, depending. So 4 hours of video may mean pegging every core for 6 hours.

No, for home. I re-encode stuff I've "recorded" from over-the-air TV.

("recorded" because that seems a silly word for dumping the digital data to disk.)
