@sourcejedi could you please link to the actual question you are discussing on your meta post instead of linking to twitter?

12:57 PM
@terdon not as a replacement. Is it acceptable to quote the twitter? If not, I would want to write my own summary of the sequence of events I'm discussing. I.e. just linking to the question isn't very clear... at least I managed to misread it even with the ability to see the deletion :-).

@sourcejedi Sure, leave the twitter link, just include a link to the actual thing being discussed. We aren't discussing the twitter post, we're discussing the deleted answer here and there is no link to that in your question.

1:15 PM
@terdon thanks. I hope it's cleaned up enough now. Now I understand what happened better, is it OK to vote to undelete since the answer has been edited?
i.e. or is it better to wait now I posted on Meta?

@sourcejedi It's always OK to vote however you like!
And thanks for the edit!

Ah, nevermind. When I click the link that says I can vote to undelete, I get a error telling me that I can't because it was a moderator deletion :-).

@sourcejedi You can still flag it for undelete, I expect.
What question/answer is this?

3:28 PM
@FaheemMitha linked in my Meta. Effectively already flagged :-).

@sourcejedi Effectively?
Meta? What Meta?

The one at the top of the Meta active list because I like to keep fiddling with wording :-)
(and there's not enough other activity on Meta to make me feel guilty about bumping it :-)

4:05 PM
@sourcejedi +1
Let's wait for the mod who converted that answer to a comment to comment...
>:-)
We're all human... Well, except for me: I'm a Vorlon!

4:19 PM
@Fabby THAT GUY!
Thanks again to @sourcejedi for bringing up the situation on Meta!

@JeffSchaller :D :D :D Forgot about that one!

Lua really has lousy error messages.
I'd complain about it, but I don't want to annoy the Lua Mafia.
@JeffSchaller That's probably the Fifth Element.

@JeffSchaller Prime example of mods abusing power

4:35 PM
@Jesse_b Prime example that even the best of us still make mistakes...
(Nope, just talking about myself...) ;-)

@Fabby Heh I was joking. There was an accusation that the mods abuse power the other day. Jeff is thanking someone for questioning him...abuse of power!

@Jesse_b Ah! Sorry: went completely above my head that one!

@Jesse_b I'm not even living up to my campaign promise to do half as much work as Kusalananda. Gotta pack these lightning bolts up a bit tighter

@JeffSchaller You need to invest in a hammer.

I care too much about the review queues

4:42 PM
@FaheemMitha I saw a good looking hammer laying in the middle of the road on my way to work this morning but I didn't have time to pick it up :(

@Jesse_b You should have picked it up. Maybe the hammer would have given you the power of flight.

@FaheemMitha I doubt it but it would have given me the power of driving nails into wood for sure

@Jesse_b That's a handy power too.

it looked like a decent construction hammer. I would have enjoyed adding it to my collection
I'll see if it's still there on my way home though

@Jesse_b Do you frequently come across homeless hammers?

4:49 PM
@FaheemMitha No but I frequently buy them from the used tool store

@Jesse_b There's a used tool store?
You live in an exciting place.

@FaheemMitha There is by me. It's like a thrift store but for construction materials and tools

@Jesse_b Fun.

I have one little ball peen hammer that I restored to a mirror finish
I have another awaiting restoration but I need to find a quality piece of hardwood to use for the handle first (along with complete 1000 other chores before I can work on anything elective)

I kind of miss the wide open spaces of North America.

5:00 PM
India is a fairly large country, there aren't wide open spaces?
Speaking of India, have you ever seen this product @FaheemMitha?

@Jesse_b I thought you might ask that. Technically yes, but they're full of people.
And not really that wide.
@Jesse_b I don't recall having seen it, no. Why?

Yeah it's hard to imagine the number of people in India
@FaheemMitha Joyent is also the name of the company I work for. Someone recently shared that in one of our chat channels and we had a laugh
1 million seconds is 11.5 days where 1 billion seconds is 31.5 years

@Jesse_b Ah right. I thought the name sounded familiar.

The US is 2.43 billion acres, India is 812 million acres
So the US has 3 times more land but 4 times less people

@Jesse_b So, at work today again?

5:13 PM
@FaheemMitha Yeah, sitting here wishing I would have grabbed that hammer

@Jesse_b That's so sad.
You usually come here when you're bored at work, right?
@Jesse_b Yes, I'm familiar with the statistics. At least those on Wikipedia.

I found some images and a video of that one hammer I restored:
https://us-east.manta.joyent.com/jesse.butryn/public/share/hammer1.jpg
https://us-east.manta.joyent.com/jesse.butryn/public/share/hammer2.jpg
https://us-east.manta.joyent.com/jesse.butryn/public/share/hammer3.jpg
https://us-east.manta.joyent.com/jesse.butryn/public/share/hammer2.mp4
crappy video but it shows the finish

@Jesse_b Your video has no sound.
Also, what are you doing with that hammer?

@FaheemMitha Should it?

@Jesse_b Dunno. You could add an upbeat popular music soundtrack.

5:23 PM
@FaheemMitha hitting things

Or some atmospheric film music.
@Jesse_b It kind of looks like you are feeling up that green thing with your hammer.

@FaheemMitha It's a box of welding rods. I was just using it to show how polished the hammer is. It's actually quite satisfying to polish an old piece of metal down to that fine of a mirror finish

@Jesse_b Oh.

I do have a radio in my shop now so most of my recent videos have sound

@Jesse_b That's nice. You could get a sound recorder.
Or just a mic.

6:01 PM
@FaheemMitha: What is your favorite genre of music

@Jesse_b I don't really have one. But historically I'm quite fond of choral.

I've never even heard of that googling

Particularly from the Baroque period. But I also listen to other periods.
E.g. the Monteverdi 1610 Vespers are pretty good.
I used to really like Handel too. Though I haven't listened to much of his music recently.
Perhaps it's the British connection.
I mean, when I hear coronation anthems, I have a strong urge to throw up.

I have understood surprisingly few words you are saying

@Jesse_b Oh dear. I seem to be getting that a lot recently.
I didn't follow the link to every referenced question, make the example here an example of whatever problem you want help with, currently the question is completely unclear — David Carlisle 1 min ago

6:06 PM
I'm listening to that vesper thing
pretty good but certainly not for people like me
Holy crap this thing is over an hour long

@Jesse_b People like me?

@FaheemMitha I'm uncultured swine

@Jesse_b You could listen to it while you go for a walk. Or search for hammers.
@Jesse_b I don't think culture enters into it. It's from the early 17th century.
That's basically another planet.
But don't listen to it if you don't like it. Speaking of music, this song is pretty good...
That's Florence and the Machine.

Not bad
I think @JeffSchaller listens to death metal

6:58 PM
@Jesse_b youtu.be/e7kJRGPgvRQ is the closest I can think of

@JeffSchaller I think that counts

7:10 PM
A friend listens (or used to listen to) Stratovarius e.g. youtube.com/watch?v=Tn58-Nl9NYw
I believe the genre is Power Metal.

@Jesse_b there was a podcast ... broken record, I think; an episode came through the revisionist history podcast; it talked about a fake metal band: stitcher.com/podcast/broken-record/e/57776014

Hello,
I looked for a Wiki article about "Compound variable" but found none. Maybe there is another name?

@JohnDoea Some context, please. What are you trying to do?
And in what language?

user141350
I don't try to do anything besides understanding that term.

user141350
I want to expand my understanding of the "Variable" concept in programming in general.

7:22 PM
It could mean the current number of compounds (areas) seen so far; it could capture the rate of compounding (finance/interest), it could be a nested array, it could be an associative array...
Where did you encounter the phrase?

user141350
I encountered it in some function in JavaScript that re-sorted an array on a web page.
I recalled that term a few days ago and said to myself it's a pity I have yet to understand its general meaning.

7:52 PM
@JohnDoea In C, they are called struct. A compond variable is a variable whose value is made up ("compounded") of many parts.
The ksh93 shell has compound variables, but I've never had to use them.
Some languages (Pascal?) calls them "records".

9:35 PM
Thanks Kusalananda.

10:23 PM
It's a bit unlikely that that's the meaning in use in a JavaScript function

An object in javascript would sort of be like a compound variable
