1:12 AM
ok im going to fuck things up if I don't do a cyber beg

1:53 AM
unix.stackexchange.com/questions/520300/bash-script-help ok well the bot should also say why am I in trouble immediately after posting i mean assuming they are bots, but probably not. do you have bots that assess for formatting immediately and downvote oddballs instantaneously?
i need like a chad bot that demonstrates a well formatted question and decorates it with frat symbols n stupid stuff like that actually no don't make that i struggle taking reality seriously enough as it is

This is an interesting expansion of “regex”, and an oddly appropriate one in many cases:

Q: bash + regular excretion + capture java version

yaelhow to capture the jdk1.8.0_112 under /usr/jdk64 /usr/jdk64/jdk1.8.0_112/ while jdk1.8.0_112 is example and could be any other version as jdk1.7.0_112 jdk3.8.2_112 jdk1.8.0_117 jdk1.2.0_112 jdk2.7.66_112 jdk1.8.2_111 jdk1.23.0_117 jdk9.2.093_112

1 hour later…
Tim
10:54 AM
@StephenKitt I was wondering why you are learning Go. Is Java not working well for some kinds of work?

11:46 AM
@Tim no, but I’m working on Kubernetes and OpenShift, and all that ecosystem uses Go

@StephenKitt Rust seems increasingly popular, for some reason.

@FaheemMitha Mozilla are pushing it a lot, but apart from that I’m not seeing it much — there’s Suricata and SŌZU too, and a bunch of libraries of course, but not a huge community (yet)

12:18 PM
Glad someone changed the title from "regular excretion" to "regular expression".

@JeffSchaller That user as a pattern of not so well thought out and not researched questions, that kind of error does not surprise me at all. But it is funny.

Tim
@StephenKitt Are you implementing or extending Kubernetes and OpenShift, or just using them?
Does just using them require to learn Go?

@Tim extending them; using them doesn’t involve learning Go, thankfully.

Tim
12:34 PM
Is there some JVM-based equivalence to Kubernetes and OpenShift, so you can utilize your Java skills?
YARN is similar to Kubernetes, but doesn't seem to work with containers?
Zookeeper is unrelated to the field of Kubernetes and OpenShift?
Are YARN and Zookeeper some outdated technologies?

@Tim similar, yes, and yes, it doesn’t work with containers (or rather, “containers” in Hadoop YARN don’t mean the same thing as “containers” in Kubernetes and the general OCI world).
@Tim right; its Kubernetes equivalent is etcd, more or less.
@Tim no, but they never gained much traction outside the Hadoop world.

Tim
I am learning Hadoop (MapReduce, HDFS), but heard that it is outdated. I am not sure now. Shall I keep learning Hadoop or something else? My goal is to move to Spark (Scala or Python). I also feel HBase and Hive can be useful, but not sure if they are also outdated.

Zookeeper is on my todo list. Is it true that Zookeeper has grown out of Hadoop ecosystem? What is used more popular outside Hadoop?
more popular than Zookeeper

1:03 PM
@Tim I don’t know how valuable Hadoop knowledge is nowadays; I suspect general “data scientist” knowledge is more valuable than implementation-specific knowledge.
There are a lot of key-value datastores, their popularity depends on the use-case...

Wow, another substantial bounty yesterday -- "only" 97% of their rep:

Q: cmake cannot find some libraries in GuixSD

Nick BailucI am trying to compile Xash3D on GuixSD v1.0.0 and gcc 8.3.0. In essence, ld cannot find crt1.o, crti.o, and libgcc_s.so, and it is quite possible that just like before, after linking or installing these 2 c objects and libgcc, cmake will halt with yet a further error regarding other other depen...

1:19 PM
@StephenKitt There's talk of Mercurial using Rust. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

1:29 PM
@JeffSchaller I don't understand the point of this. Does it make a useful answer more likely?

@FaheemMitha the point of me announcing it here in chat? Or bounties in general? Or a large bounty? Or a large-percentage bounty? I have so many questions

@JeffSchaller A large bounty.
And a fortiori, a large-percentage bounty.

@FaheemMitha for the people who like the reputation points, an accepted answer would be a windfall of points, so it hopefully attracts answerers and (useful) answers

@JeffSchaller It's hard to imagine anyone caring that much.

@FaheemMitha it's a pretty big part of Stack Exchange :)

1:34 PM
I answer questions before I'm trying to be helpful and stuff. Pay it forward and all that.

(the fake internet points)

@JeffSchaller Hmm.

@FaheemMitha 250 points jumps you nearly halfway up the privilege list

Actually, in one case, someone did post a bounty on one of my questions. I've never posted a bounty myself.
And it did have a marked effect. I think the question was at 0. It suddently got a lot of upvotes, and a bunch of answers.
But it had been so long I no longer cared much about the question.
I think it was some C++ thing.
That's the trouble with all these hideous technologies. It's hard to care about them after a while. While you're working on it, you somehow do care. But I think it's a Stockholm Syndrome kind of thing.

Way to go @JeffSchaller, I love the way you handled unix.stackexchange.com/q/520414/86440

1:43 PM
Blue Jeff strikes again

@StephenKitt thanks! Trying to lead by example; to paraphrase the SE philosopher Whitney Houston, "I believe the new users are our future // Teach them well and let them lead the way"

Presumably trying to install as user. But shouldn't rpm detect that early and error out?
I forget what dpkg does, but I doubt it would let things get so far.
Hmm, experimentation time...

@Jesse_b do I have other colors?

error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (Permission denied)

@JeffSchaller Blue Jeff has a green thumb

1:46 PM
faheem@orwell:/tmp$ dpkg -i slrn_1.0.3+dfsg-3_amd64.deb
dpkg: error: requested operation requires superuser privilege
There we go. Now, that's a clear error message.

@Jesse_b just keep it inside the 8-crayon box, that's all the colors I know

I assume that error is actually coming from dpkg.
@Jesse_b Green thumb?

@FaheemMitha He has a nice lawn

Green shoes is more like it. Though they were more brown than green after that muddy mowing session. Most of what I grow is clover and dandelions

@Jesse_b Ah, yes. In some mysterious, undisclosed location. Perhaps it's the Marvellous Land of Oz.

1:48 PM
some moss, some crabgrass

@JeffSchaller Dandelions are a thorn in my side
I have pulled over four 5 gallon buckets full of them so far this season

@Jesse_b you have one of these? -- best tool I've found so far
go just after a nice rain and they pop right out

We should have a game where we try to guess where Jeff is located. Like 20 questions.

@JeffSchaller No mine is just the fork part without the lever/closing action
still works pretty well for dandelions

@Jesse_b long as it works; I really enjoy using the Grandpa's Weeder

1:51 PM
I also put down a "weed and feed" fertilizer that is targeted toward dandelions and it works pretty well but only for a few weeks after I put it down, then they start coming back
Yeah I should get one of those because the biggest problem with mine is they often fall off after I get them out of the ground and then I have to bend over to pick them up

@Jesse_b keep the little lever closed on it until you swing it over the bucket
nevermind
IF you had a Grandpa's weeder, you could ... keep the lever closed on it ...
(this is the peak of my gardening wisdom, btw)

I used to work on the maintenance crew of a golf course and the weed puller we had was really nice

@JeffSchaller You could keep rabbits.

I don't think I have seen one like it since

@FaheemMitha we have a few wild ones; the hawks and neighborhood cats keep them under control

1:55 PM
There are so many rabbits in my neighborhood. Hawks kill one in my back yard probably once a week
and then my dog runs around with it

@Jesse_b a hawk-killing dog, impressive! ;) (yes, I've started to read the "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" book)
woops, had it backwards

I love eating my family and not using commas

@JeffSchaller Do you eat them?

My family? or dogs, or hawks? or oxford commas?
or the neighborhood cats?

@JeffSchaller aw come on: my family, dogs, hawks, or Oxford commas?

1:58 PM
I see it's the grammatical comedy hour.
I bet oxford commas taste like chicken.

@FaheemMitha Mythbusters did an episode on that

@StephenKitt or, the, Shatner, comma

@JeffSchaller hah

@JeffSchaller or, the, coma, inducing, Shatner, comma

@Jesse_b Or periods.

2:01 PM
@FaheemMitha I have noticed I have a habit of not using periods in informal chat. Usually only when the message is a single sentence, I think the sending of the message is enough to terminate the sentence .
@JeffSchaller: I think this is similar to what I used on the golf course

@Jesse_b you liked it? Looks to me like you'd have to be a bit more ... precise... in guessing the direction of the root

I could write a random inquiry page to ask how many of long time users still think a rep 1 user equals 1 new user.....

@JeffSchaller No it was pretty easy to use. It is precise as well which I guess is important on short grass in a golf course, you don't want to tear up more ground than is absolutely needed. You just have to stab it down into the center of the weed and twist though, it did the rest.

@RuiFRibeiro to be sure, some sock puppet accounts exist, but a (real) new user has to come in at 1 (or 100, if they're just new to U&L), so it pays to keep an open mind

2:29 PM
@JeffSchaller Some is an understatment. People because of not liking, or not wanting to take part, because of laziness, or out of these reasons together, are creating new accounts all the time. And keeping a minimal bit of attention, you can establish connection between the themes, problems, and writing styles, there are a few regulars. IMO, the biggest problem of this network is being so cheap/low effort to create a new account.

Tim
2:39 PM
the biggest problem of this network is arrogance, ignorance, evangelicalism, conservativesm, lack of monitoring of power abusing, lack of democracy, closed-mindedness, inequality

Conservativesm(sic)?

Tim
eschewing

Tim
I have been educated by Democracy Now!
thanks to youtube's recommendation systems
The moderator team at SO like to protect each other, like frat boys, instead of being critical of each other's power abusing

I don't think I've ever seen any of the mods abuse power
@Kusalananda often makes me fix sloppy code but in the end it's for my own good

2:47 PM
@Jesse_b was that a request? :)

@JeffSchaller I can start talking about the benefits of the Microsoft Office Suite again and see if @terdon will ban me for it

@Jesse_b I debated kicking you out of the chat room temporarily, but ... well, the day is young

=)
Would it tell me that I had been kicked or just close the chat?

Tim
The real threats to average Americans are those super rich or powerful, not immigrants

@Tim I feel like you are arguing in a debate that isn't happening

Tim
2:52 PM
I can find a lot of similarities between SE network and a country
I can't help but relate

@Jesse_b I have no idea -- I've never tried to kick anyone out of a chat room. Want to experiment, for education's sake?!?

@Jesse_b It would tell you that you had been banned, and for how long, I believe.
It happened to me once. For about 5 minutes. I think it was supposed to be 10.
@JeffSchaller Go for it.

I don't know how to un-do it yet; let me look that up

@Tim Um, yes? That's something everyone knows. So?
@JeffSchaller Can you toss people out for a prescribed period of time? Like 2-5 min?

Tim
So why is xenophobia growing everywhere?

2:55 PM
@Tim Because people are stupid and ignorant.

Tim
Average people are manipulated and express their hatred towards foreigners

And are easily brainwashed. Also the educational systems in the US, at least at the earlier stages, isn't the best.

@FaheemMitha don't know yet! All I see is a link that says "kick-mute this user" -- I don't know what's behind that link

@Tim Also true. In other news, gravity exists. So don't try and fly, kids.

I'm slow, I'll get there :)

2:56 PM
@JeffSchaller Yes, I see it too. Never tried using it, though.
Well, unless you are Superman. In which case, you know how to do it.
Wow, the media really don't like Trump. I'm not really sure if he's so much worse than his loathsome predecessors, though.
It's interesting that he's refusing to give Congress any information about his finances, even though he's legally obliged to do so.

whew, finally found the description. Sounds like it'll let me pick a reasonable timeout. @Jesse_b, are you still up for SCIENCE?
no, that's the wrong one. Looks like it's automatic increasing timeouts, starting with 1 minute

@JeffSchaller Yikes.

@JeffSchaller send it

It's a 3-year old Meta post, what could go wrong?
begone for 60 seconds, Jesse!

@JeffSchaller Famous last words.

3:08 PM
:-)

I got a broadcast message about it. Did everyone else too?

Yes

> Jesse_b has been kicked from /dev/chat at 2019-05-22 15:08:21Z by Jeff Schaller ♦ and cannot return for 1 minute.

I wonder if I could kick Jeff?

Woops, it said it would notify the room owner(s) (Faheem) but I didn't realize it would notify the other moderators
@Kusalananda I think you can't -- I tried to kick terdon but didn't see the link/option

3:09 PM
@JeffSchaller the earth shook

@Jesse_b thanks! It wouldn't let me enter a custom reason; just one confirmation pop-up and you're gone :)

@Jesse_b And let this be a lesson to you.

=)

@JeffSchaller Hmm... But I could "ignore" you. It seems weird that moderators can be muted.

3:12 PM
In other non-news, I recently discovered that Caleb is a major contributor to SILE. Has anyone seem him around recently?

@StephenKitt as a room member did you get a notification, too?

@JeffSchaller no, I only saw Jesse leave and return.

now I'm wondering how long Jesse has to carry around this "strike" -- or his next kick will be longer. "The kick-mute length increases with each instance: initially they will be kicked for 1 minute, then 5 minutes, then 30 minutes. After 3 kicks from the room, an automatic moderator flag is raised. "

@FaheemMitha Not cool.

oh dear, now I've pulled in two other moderators. better put the lightning bolts away now

3:18 PM
@terdon Not sure what I wrote there... I can make an educated guess, though.

@FaheemMitha I'm sure you can. Please don't name specific users like that, it isn't really nice. It's also no big deal, just, you know, avoid it in future.

@JeffSchaller You could change your user name to "Lord of Thunder".

@JeffSchaller Don't worry, @Jesse_b had it coming!

=)
I've been kicked from quite a few things in my day

@Jesse_b well, your next kick is apparently 5 minutes, so make it count ;)

3:39 PM
@JeffSchaller: What kind of riding mower do you have

@Jesse_b I think it's a Craftsman LT3000 (might have the number wrong)

Nice, you modify it at all?
I am thinking about putting headers and a new carb on mine

I can only imagine what I would have carved into my backyard if I had more horsepower; so, no :)

I have a poulin pro something or other but I guess the briggs and stratton engine it uses is common in go-kart racing so there are a bunch of aftermarket parts for it

if I started putting knobbies and a roll cage on my mower, my wife would start to think I was enjoying mowing too much

3:48 PM
Hah, lawn mower racing is a pretty big activity

I'd heard of people driving their mowers on the road (to get gas??) but not ... racing. I should have guessed!

@JeffSchaller I built a trailer for mine and have driven it through my culdesac to move some things before :p

@Jesse_b well, that's useful!

I moved like 4 trailer loads of those rocks that day, my back was wore out

What will be the better way to run Arch ARM64 in Arch X64 + X64 CPU?

4:08 PM
@Jesse_b nicely done! I like the quick hitch and the removable door! Is the back section yours, too, with the fire ring/pit? How do you get the mower up there? Running start and a ramp? :)

4:20 PM
@JeffSchaller Off to the left is a ramp that goes up there
And thanks, that was my first welding project since high school
I was worried about the strength of my welds but I have definitely put over 1000lbs in that thing and so far it's held up fine

1 hour later…
6:20 PM
"We have not established an end date for ISC DHCP support. We are still committed to maintaining it, at least through the end of 2020. If it is working for you, you can keep using it. We have however reached the end of our ability to add new features."

6:39 PM
Thunderstorm. Nice.

What up @Kusalananda

@Jesse_b Hot (well, relatively) and humid (relative humidity).

My cat got tested for diabetes yesterday and I thought of you

@Jesse_b How sweet! :-) Did she have diabetes?
He?

He does not. He has been sick lately though

6:41 PM
My diabetic cat is doing really well.

I think it is just from some new food we have been giving him
Nice!

They are a bit sensitive to stuff. In general. Cats.

This vet was terrible, I am never going back to him. He completely ignored everything I was saying about the cat. Said "He's dehydrated! Must be diabetes"

Huh.

Being dehydrated is one of the symptoms of feline diabetes I guess. But he has had diarrhea for a week which will certainly also cause dehydration

6:44 PM
Doctors in general shouldn't listen (too closely) to the patients' own stories, that's completely true. But they should also not offer diagnosis without consideration.

And he's not overweight, still has his appetite, does not suffer from any other symptoms of diabetes

@Jesse_b Our cat also had bad tummy for some time. Her diabetes is caused by an infection of the pancreas, probably due, in turn, by eating too fatty food.
She had a habit of licking sauces from plates and even ate bacon.

The oldest living cat on record ate bacon every day
lived to 32 I think

It's owner had another cat live to like 28 I believe too

6:51 PM
Maybe they were very good at lying too, eh? :-)

38 not 32!
Creme Puff (August 3, 1967 – August 6, 2005) was a domestic cat, owned by Jake Perry of Austin, Texas. She was the oldest cat ever recorded, according to the 2010 edition of Guinness World Records, when she died aged 38 years and 3 days. Perry had another cat, Granpa, who was claimed to have been born in Paris, Texas, in 1964 and died in 1998, aged 34 years and 2 months. Granpa was posthumously awarded 1999 Cat of the Year by Cats & Kittens magazine. Granpa was featured in an earlier edition of Guinness World Records. The co-authors of at least one book have pondered whether the longevity of Perry...
ah I see, it was turkey bacon
so not bacon at all

Huh

> The co-authors of at least one book have pondered whether the longevity of Perry's cats may have had something to do with an unusual diet of, among other things, turkey bacon and eggs, asparagus, broccoli, and coffee with heavy cream, concluding that Perry "must be doing something right."

I thought coffee would be poisonous to them, maybe not in small doses, and with lots of cream?

> Pets are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than people are. While 1-2 laps of coffee, tea or soda will not contain enough caffeine to cause poisoning in most pets, the ingestion of moderate amounts of coffee grounds, tea bags or 1-2 diet pills can easily cause death in small dogs or cats.

6:57 PM
What's a "diet pill"?
Oh, some sort of appetite supression thing.

A good example of why the supplement/medical system in the US is crap
They are basically just caffeine pills but often have way more sinister things in them including meth
There is almost no control over the supplement market in the US, they are always getting caught with illegal/toxic/harmful substances in them

7:29 PM
How can one be sure about the age of a cat?

@JeffSchaller "Regular excretion" is what you get when you're trying to apply regular expressions to every problem you come across.
3

@FaheemMitha Know when it was born

@Jesse_b Booring
You look at the rings, obviously.

@Jesse_b Yes, how can one be sure about that?

hah

7:31 PM
@Kusalananda Rings?

@FaheemMitha Be there when it was born

No, that's trees. Sorry.

Rings of power?

Short of knowing when it was born, vets will make an educated guess based on the way it's eyes and mouth look

The rings around the eyes.

7:33 PM
It's not an exact science though, my cat was 8 years old last year and the vet said he would have guessed 2 years old

"Not exact"

Good enough for the girls I go out with

@Kusalananda I thought it was what you get when you eat high-fiber foods and then sit down to think about a problem.
@FaheemMitha You count the candles on the birthday cake!

@JeffSchaller Can confirm -- I eat a lot of fiber and am very regular

@Jesse_b the particular expression you make is up to you, of course
Jul 20 '18 at 0:21, by Jeff Schaller
@Jesse_b "I had a problem, so I tried to solve it with regular expressions. Now I have two problems."

7:48 PM
If you tried to solve your problem with my regular expressions you would have more than two problems
At least one of your problems would be where can you find industrial quantities of bleach

@JeffSchaller Very scientific.

@FaheemMitha If an experiment doesn't involve cake is it even worth doing?

@Jesse_b Depends on the cake.

@FaheemMitha what is your favorite cake

@Jesse_b Dunno. I'm generally partial to chocolate.
But I like other kinds too. Then again, I'm not really a big fan of sugar. My mother used to make something called roat, which I thought was pretty nice.
Never heard the name elsewhere, so she may have got it wrong.
Hmm, I'm actually getting some hits for that.
It was a kind of dryish cake. Not very sweet. Kind of crumbly. But very tasty.

@Jesse_b That doesn't look like it, actually.
Definitely not.That isn't even a cake.

says
> Roat is a sweet biscuit fried in ghee that is usually made for Jhandis or Hindu prayer services.

@Jesse_b Yes, I read that. That's something completely different.
Bear in mind I don't recall anything besides the name, and the general "feel" of the cake.
But it was definitely a proper cake. Not a biscuit thing. And definitely not fried. Ugh.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ not my roat not my problem that's what I say

Looked rather like this, actually - youtube.com/watch?v=Eluep2SUp4E
For some reason Google Images threw up this one.
Which jogged my memory. It was yellow in color. Crumbly in texture. And there was a seed motif.

8:09 PM
I hate youtube commenters

@Jesse_b Why?

Top comment on that video is "Please give recipe in grams".

And if you left a Youtube comment, does that then mean that you would hate yourself?

I have left a few comments

I left one once. Asking for the name of a piece of music in a West Coast Swing video.
I might have left others. I don't remember.

8:13 PM
Damn
@Kusalananda reacted to my fb video but I can't friend request him
I can stalk his photos though

8:26 PM
@Jesse_b Did you tell me once you had your own workshop? Or am I confusing you with someone else?

@FaheemMitha I have a small woodshop, yes
Although lately I have been using it for some metal work but I want to build a dedicated metal shop in my garage, because metal shavings can dull all the blades in my woodworking tools

@Jesse_b Do you have a lathe?
I have a feeling we talked about lathes.

@FaheemMitha I do not

@Jesse_b Oh

Maybe, lathes are a great tool
You can do so much with them, including a lot of machining

8:30 PM
Is your shop in a separate structure?
I mean, apart from your house?

@FaheemMitha Yeah it's a shed in my back yard

@Jesse_b Ok. Planning on expanding?

Yeah I would like to have a much bigger space but I would have to move for that

@Jesse_b You can't just build a bigger shed. Or remod your current shed?

8:37 PM
@Jesse_b That looks pretty nice. In India, that would be someone's home.

@FaheemMitha Yeah maybe, I have thought about extending it. I don't want to live in my current home forever though. I would like to retire to some place further away from the city. Which hopefully will have a barn like structure

What's that machine on the right side table in the second picture?

Miter saw

Are you looking to get into some type of maker hobby @FaheemMitha?

8:44 PM
@Jesse_b Maker hobby?

@FaheemMitha Yeah you can sort of lump all of woodworking, machinist, welding, even some electronic stuff into "maker" there are also some wood workers that call themselves "makers" because the term "woodworker" is often thought of as more classical woodworking and those people are the devil

@Jesse_b As in making stuff? Not really, though it's not a bad hobby to have.

@FaheemMitha Yeah basically

9:15 PM
@Kusalananda is a good photographer
