@FaheemMitha Well i might be biased here but i don't like the policy about opening different ads to be allowed form Ad-Block_plus, so i switched a while ago to uBlock-Origin and privacy-badger for blocking tracking cookies. But that is like i said my personal choice.

@Videonauth How do you like Block-Origin and privacy-badger? Is it possible to function if you are blocking tracking cookies?

@FaheemMitha works wonderfully, I see no ads anyhwere, and blocking tracking cookies is just the cherry on top :) (of course you can switch of ad blocking where you want to see it, for example the SE network i have disabled it)
both tools are provided by eff.org

@Videonauth I thought Block-Origin was by an individual developer.

could be wrong on this privacy badger is by eff.org
however it works wonderful still :) and even is capable of running on FF57
Tho i still hold out on 56 until they release 58 which maybe finally allows some of my most used add ons to be updated for the newer FF

@Videonauth Are you talking about Privacy Badger?

@FaheemMitha no, badger and ublock work both in FF57
i have a couple of oher add-ons which dont work in FF 57

@Videonauth I see
I think I just installed Block-Origin. How do I see add-ones in Firefox?

The API in FF57 is incomplete and so many add-on developers can only hope that the rest of the API makes it into FF58
about:addons
or switch the menu bar on and choose Tools → Add-Ons

9:02 AM
@Videonauth That's strange. Why is it incomplete?
Actually, looks like I installed uBlock-Origin.

I use for example a password exporter tool and a password manager on FF which is not using an outside cloud or whatever to store my passwords, and the API to access that is not done yet so didnt make it into FF57
and due to that the devs of those add-ons cant update them to work on 57
and i don't like missing my backup solution for my passwords

@Videonauth Sorry, I see you referred to uBlock-Origin. There is no Block-Origin.

his add on called umatrix is a more fine grained no script solution if you're curious

I'm on 52 here. Ancient history.
@Videonauth I don't follow. What is umatrix?

you should maybe switch to 52 ESR rather
@FaheemMitha you know of noscript?

9:14 AM
@Videonauth It is 52 ESR. I'm running what Debian stable is running.
@Videonauth I've heard of it. But I don't know anything about it.

noscript alows you for example to block the execution of javascript on pages you visit

@Videonauth Ah, right.

umatrix does a lot more it even allows you to prevent the loading of CSS and so on

@Videonauth Is that useful?

blocking of javascript? yep sometimes it is :)
even if linux is less prone to attacks attempts viea javascript in a browser

9:20 AM
@Videonauth For example, if the JS is malicious?

yes

> In January 2016, uBlock Origin was added to the repositories for Debian 9 and Ubuntu 16.04.
Should I be using the package instead?
Only available for chromium, though, it looks like.
apt-cache search ublock
xul-ext-ublock-origin - general-purpose lightweight ads, malware, trackers blocker
chromium-ublock-origin - general-purpose lightweight ads, malware, trackers blocker (Chromium)
ublock-origin-doc - general-purpose lightweight ads, malware, trackers blocker - documentation

well i installed the version through the firefox add on page

@Videonauth Me too.
Apparently those other two "sell" exceptions to blocking. Adblock/Adblock Plus. At least, those are the rumors.

... but i don't like the policy about opening different ads to be allowed from Ad-Block_plus ...
@FaheemMitha those are no rumors
was using adblock-plus before myself but since not all ads got blocked anymore i switched about a year ago or so

9:53 AM
@Videonauth Huh. Thanks for the confirmation.

1 hour later…
10:59 AM
@FaheemMitha xul-ext-ublock-origin contains the add-on for Firefox and Thunderbird

oh good to know

11:22 AM
@StephenKitt Oh. Is that preferable to the add-ons via the usual method (clicking a button on a web page saying to install)?

11:33 AM
@FaheemMitha the aim is different IMO: you install a package if you want all compatible applications to benefit from it automatically, for every user (in every profile), but then you’re limited to the distribution’s updates; you install an add-on via the browser if you’re not root, or if you only care about the add-on for yourself (or you’re the only user)

11:46 AM
@StephenKitt Yes, I see. Good points. Thank you.
I guess since the user is just me, it's ok to just do a browser add-on.
And I doubt Debian would update that package very often.
Though I don't know if the browser update is updated automatically either.

From the author of uBlock Origin.
I thought you folks might appreciate the sentiment.
