What is this Kali thing? Are there always so many not so qualified question regarding this or was there any media coverage?

11:41 AM
@JodkaLemon wannabe's infosec people

12:12 PM
@Braiam
Yes, I realize that, but is it always like that or just wave?
Maybe because upcoming DEF CON 23?

Minimal number of characters in edits for new users doesn't make much sense, eg unix.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/99613

@jimmij Yeah, it's to avoid spurious edits. It sometimes blocks good ones as well. personally, on sites where I don't have the rep to edit, I'll just leave a comment to the OP pointing out the typo.
@JodkaLemon They sometimes come in waves. For some reason, many people who know nothing about Linux seem to think that Kali is the way to go.

@JodkaLemon kali and its predecessor, backtrack are distros that advertise themselves as "penetration testing" distros. In reality they are just ubuntu with a bunch of pentest tools installed on top. The distro is a honeypot for wannabe l33t h4X0rs who have no clue what to do with a computer after they press the power button, so you get a lot of terrible questions from them.

@casey Honeypot? Is that the correct word? Honeypot implies some sort of trap. Customarily used for people committing illegal acts.

@FaheemMitha honeypot derives from a literal pot of honey. Leave one outside and watch the flies and ants succumb to it.

@casey yes, I'm aware of the derivation. But it seems a bit of a stretch here.
Since the implication is that the pot was left "open" by design.
I don't suppose whoever is behind Kali was planning to Corral the Clueless.

no, but they had to be aware they'd attract every script kiddie on the internet, who by definition are pretty clueless

Not to say that is necessarily a bad thing.
@casey How so? Because of the "penetration testing" tools?
Is it hard to install those oneself?

because they drool over a pre-install of metasploit they'd never get working on their own

3:39 PM
"script kiddie" means moron who wants to break into other people's computers, right?

the ones that aren't clueless realize they can add kali repos as a ppa on ubuntu and just install the tools they want
@FaheemMitha script kiddie means they want to run a script and "hack" someone. They don't know what they are running, they don't know how or why it works, they just know "if I run this program, X happens"
e.g. in the late 90's winnuke was popular
you could easily write that in a few lines of C

@casey I stand by "moron".

or you could download some binary from the internet to do it, which likely had something else baked in that you didnt want :)
@FaheemMitha yes, and so when the pot of honey is left out in plain sight, the morons can't resist going over and getting stuck in it.

Hmm. Pity they don't die in it.
Unfortunately computers don't kill people. Yet.

a pot of honey left outside is going to attract attention whether or not you left it out there on purpose

3:43 PM
@casey I believe you.

the use of honeypot in security is different only in the placement of the honey. They put it where the ants and flies should not exist, so they know the ones they catch were up to no good.

@FaheemMitha Um. How do you think missiles are launched? Ever heard of a targeting computer?

4:51 PM
My husband has been consluting at a company that does respirators. If they fail, people do die...

1 hour later…
5:59 PM
@terdon Computers don't kill people. People kill people.
Hmm. I wonder if anyone has thought of that before.
Hi @JennyD.
I was thinking of computers like Skynet or Hal, to be clear.

6:34 PM
I see your point - they're tools, they're not doing it of their own accord.

@JennyD Yes, that's what I meant.

@JennyD That's what them wants to make you think

@Braiam, do you suspect your computer of wanting to kill you?

think of it this way... if computers actually were sentient, why are spammers alive?

@FaheemMitha think about it, people attacks people based on information computers give you, so you are compelled to attack them

6:47 PM
@Braiam Don't believe everything you are told, including by a computer.

7:43 PM
You are being watched. The government has a secret system, a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I know because... I built it.

@JennyD That's either a quote or you really work for the NSA.

8:00 PM
@JennyD that sounds like Eagle Eye...

@Muru: do you know what the stance on Homework questions is on U&L?
Smoke... BRB.

@Fabby they seem to be welcome

A: add a new close reason : homework?

slmI would think not. We don't want to discourage people from asking for help with their homework, per se. Users that are seeking help with their homework should be welcomed to the SE sites, rather we want to discourage them from simply dumping their assignments here, and expecting users to provid...

@Fabby No policy. Depending on how obvious they are, they might be downvoted into oblivion or answered normally.

Anybody here have experience with cats who just gave birth?
The Pets chatroom seems awfully quiet.

@muru sorry, around here, our cats are many-to-one. Use tee for one-to-many.
You might have better luck in the Teachers' Lounge

@Gilles this one is one-to-one (or seems to be)
ah, I'll ask around other places. She literally fled when the kitten started mewling

11:10 PM
@Gilles Downloaded! :-)

11:28 PM
@muru Next time, just post the question here or in AU instead of sending people on a wild goose chase to other rooms...
:P
