Do you guys have a question about connecting to the internet via the command-line?

I'm almost sure that there is one about how to connect to a network without the use of network manager
with the command line it would imply something "ad-hoc"
damm soundcloud, stop pushing new versions when I'm listening music!

Ad-hoc? I've had this very problem.
For what it's worth, I actually asked a question about it because there was so little good info out there.
Now I know better, so I could figure it out easily...

something like this ifconfig eth0 add 10.0.0.2 broadcast 10.0.0.250 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
warning, I never have done that... most of the time I just edit /etc/network* and done with it

1:04 AM
mm... @Seth haven't found a way to do it

1:30 AM
@Braiam Way to do what?

using pure command line (without configuration files nor network manager (which I know how)) to change the ip/netmask/etc. of a device

@Seth In what regard?

Q: "Merge [distro-version] tags into [distro] tags", should we?

BraiamFollowing up previous discussion we definitively found those tags useless, so there are two options to make the change definitive: Manual cleanup (bleh! but yay!) Automated (yay! but bleh!) Why those reactions, well, manual cleanup also allows us to review the state of other tags, add tag, fi...

Another annoying font issue. If I increase the font size of Libreoffice, then nothing happens. Can anyone reproduce this?
"Thanks to the Free Software revolution any student of computers can see how software like the Linux kernel or thousands of other Free Software is designed and make new innovations."
I think "is designed" is correct there. Am I right?
16
Q: What is the plural form of "Software"?

Mehper C. PalavuzlarIs it correct to use "softwares"? For example: There are various video conversion softwares in the market.

I never really registered that the word software is uncountable.

@Braiam Reading is a useful skill.

@FaheemMitha "is designed" is correct. Though I find that use of "Free Software" awkward; I'd use "programs".

@FaheemMitha compressive reading is more useful

@derobert FYI, this is a letter by the local Debian group (India). Much of the wording is awkward by definition - Indians don't write the best English, at least to my ears. If you feel like taking a look, I could send it to you.
This particular letter also has a couple of incomplete sentences.

And BTW the subject its agreeing with is "...how software like...". If I remember my grammar correctly, that whole prepositional phrase (the "like ... Software" part) doesn't matter for is vs. are.

2:58 PM
@derobert agreed about programs
@derobert agreed
For some reason, these chose to write it in freaking Libreoffice rather than just plain text. I'll send them a polite note suggesting they use LaTeX.
Can anyone help with with this Libreoffice font issue? It's really annoying me.

hah, nothing really wrong with LibreOffice...
I've never seen it fail to react to a font size change.

@derobert the letter is a form letter asking for the use of college facilities.
@derobert Well, I guess I must be doing something wrong.
Do I need to do anything special? there are (at least) two options, change in the menu or via right clicki - neither of these work.
@derobert I'm not overly fond of word processors.

@FaheemMitha Well, you select the text, go to the point size in the toolbar, and pick a new one...

@derobert Oh, but suppose I want to enlarge text just for viewing?
All the text? And yes, that would explain why nothing happened. I guess I have forgotten how work processors work.
I didn't actually select anything.

@FaheemMitha There is a zoom thingy at the bottom

3:03 PM
@derobert Oh!

Bottom-right on mine. There is a zoom bar and a percentage. You click the percentage to set one, or use the zoom bar

Cool, I didn't notice that. Thanks a lot.
Yes, I see it. I didn't before; it isn't very large.

No, you're just supposed to know about it because Word has it too...

@derobert Oh. I used Word for a bit around 1998. But it has been a while.
Ok, maybe for a couple of years. I forget now. I'm pretty sure I stopped using it entirely around 1999.
I got my own computer in 1998 and pretty much started using LaTeX for everything. Never looked back.
Dammit. does LO have an undo function?

3:12 PM
Ctrl-Z, apparently. This is why I prefer text. I could be using emacs right now.
I don't know the emacs commands either, but fortunately my fingers do.
"Just as it is critical for a medical student to gain familiarity with the human body, so it is similarly important for a software student to know how software is written, maintained, used and improved upon in the real world."
Software student? Umm.
@derobert how about "software engineering student"?
should i change the "critical" to important too? Maybe I should be doing this in english.sx chat.

@FaheemMitha yeah, that's the right name for the major, probably.
@FaheemMitha also, strike 'so', probably change 'know' to 'learn' or similar, and just 'improved' (instead of 'improved upon') is fine
improved upon is fine too, but can be shortened if desired

@derobert Ok. The "so" was my addition. redundant?

@FaheemMitha I'm not entirely sure why... but it just feels like it clearly does not belong there.

@derobert yes "upon" can go, i think.

Checking Wiktionary shows no meaning of 'so' that fits there...

3:24 PM
@derobert if i paste it into a etherpad will you look at it?

I guess. Though you probably want to also pester one of the English rooms

@derobert I'll try English chat. But they wouldn't know or care about the content.

Also, there is a Debian mailing list for stuff like that...

@derobert I'd really need an IRC channel for real-time chat.

@FaheemMitha Well, they can certainly help copy edit it.

3:29 PM
@derobert checking for eng loc irc channel
I don't want to spend a lot of time on it. If there are some grammar people on the list, and they reply, I could be dragged into discussions.
Don't see a suitable irc channel

@FaheemMitha Nah, shouldn't be that bad. They'll send you back suggested edits. That's about it.

@derobert ok
@derobert how about "critical vs "similarly important"? should "critical" become "important"?

3:47 PM
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, yesterday, by Tim Post
FYI - The last of the swag backlog we've been hammering at goes out today, so if you're owed something, it's out of the warehouse this week. Apologies, technical difficulties and such, I think we've got it back to normal.

4:01 PM
@derobert thanks, that was very helpful. Don't feel obliged to spend more time on it.

I think I'm done looking it over.

@derobert Thanks.

hah, I didn't even notice there is a chat on the right. hah.

@derobert you don't use etherpad much?

@FaheemMitha nope

4:04 PM
Should I strike the was?

which "was" ?

4:15 PM
@derobert See the chat.
"This project was started in 1993,"

yeah, strike that one

@derobert How about: A mechanical student will rarely have a chance to see how a BMW, Mercedes Benz or a Ferrari being designed and manufactured, let alone have the chance to work with designers and manufacturers.

strike how

@derobert ok. Otherwise Ok? Including the "rarely"?
I think I meant to write "how a ... is designed and manufactured".

@FaheemMitha yeah, otherwise OK

4:29 PM
Though "a chance to see a BMW, Mercedes Benz or a Ferrari being designed and manufactured" probably ok too.
Is "Most of the time" equivalent to "mostly"?

@FaheemMitha context?

Most of the time students learn only theoretical concepts or trivial software as part of their curriculum.
Also, how about
"A mini Debian conference requires class rooms/lecture halls with projectors for talks, and labs for hands on workshops. It is better for the conference to last more than a day, to allow more time for talks and for participants to interact with each other. In this case, we also request accomodation for speakers and delegates, and also for students from outside the host institution, to enable them to participate."

4:46 PM
sounds good
though you have an extra comma before "and"...
"for talks, and labs" that one

@derobert right

I'd still send the final draft to that Debian English list, just to see if they have anything else to add. They may also have the benefit of having seen similar letters before.

@derobert Sounds like a plan.
Though I still really, really detest word processors.
I'd have to figure out how to diff it. Actually, I think I'll just send an ascii version.

@FaheemMitha Edit -> Compare Documents. But yeah, you want to send plain text to the mailing list.

@derobert Will do. But, compare what documents? Am I supposed to save different versions as different files?

4:54 PM
@FaheemMitha Yes, unless you turn on record changes
Or you can save revisions inside one file...

@derobert Should I send as an attachment or inline?

@FaheemMitha Inline.

@derobert ok

lists.debian.org/debian-l10n-english has archives links, so you can see how things are done there...

@derobert ok

5:03 PM
lists.debian.org/debian-publicity and lists.debian.org/debian-sprints may also be relevant, especially if you find any takers.

have got a question about proxy server
is there anybody can help me ?

@Mironline Ask on the list.

... on the site, not list

@derobert sprints seems a bit of a stretch, but publicity seems reasonable.
@derobert right. sorry. site.

5:20 PM
@derobert letter sent.

5:31 PM

> But I have problems with EVERY program I use, not only wget.
you should look at the routing tables instead

@Braiam: The question only ask about wget? And I also make a note.

slm
@Gnouc I'm assuming that it was b/c the issue was with the firewall and not binding, or perhaps your solution worked around the issue but didn't really solve/fix it for anything besides wget? I voted it up, but in the comments Patrick identified the actual cause, it was the OP's firewall

@slm: I also mention this. And can not provide any more information because the OP does not show his firewall rule.

slm
I feel your pain, it's frustrating when you get only a bit of info to go on. I think the major clue that Patrick keyed on was the " cache <local>
"
@Patrick - you going to write up an A to this one?unix.stackexchange.com/questions/152463/…

5:38 PM
@slm: No, cache <local> seems no affect here. This maybe due to NAT rule.

slm
How you knew it was the firewall might be of interest to others here.

actually seems to be a NATed VM

slm
How Patrick knew that it was the firewall would be of interest to me as well

@slm: Because the OP receive the External IP when access local IP
This due to NAT rule, because it affect PREROUTING chain of iptables

slm
@Gnouc - I understand the issue...now.
I've also asked the OP to include his firewall output in the Q, since this Q is likely to come up from time to time
@Gnouc - once he does if you want you can recast your A as 2 approaches to the issue instead of one.

5:44 PM
I reconstruct it, waiting the OP :)

slm
story of our lives...waiting for OP's 8-)

@slm my finger itch to close questions whenever I find myself in the same situation

slm
@Braiam - same here...

3 hours later…
8:41 PM
@derobert Impressively thorough response from Justin Rye from l10n-english
Professional type grammarians always intimidate me.

9:20 PM
@FaheemMitha Indeed.
I'd be tempted to make further changes, e.g., "and used on machines of all sorts from mainframes to desktops to mobile devices." -> "and used on all sorts of machines---mainframes to mobiles". But that's less clear, it does get some nice alliteration though :-)

@derobert You looked at his response?
Yes, I see you are quoting it.

9:49 PM
@FaheemMitha Nope, I discovered it via divination...
Divination via mailing list archives, but divination no less.

@derobert are you going to debconf?

10:21 PM
@derobert to upload a new package closing a RFP, do I need to be uploader or I can ask for sponsor?

10:33 PM
@FaheemMitha Nope. Had to star your debconf comment :-)
@Braiam You'll need to find a sponsor. Generally that'd be along the path to becoming an uploader (or full DM)
Going home :-)

slm
this looks to be a known spammer account

@derobert No, you haven't. :-)

@slm "this"?

@Braiam You could apply on debian.mentors.net. But you might be better off talking to DDs you know.
You could do both of course.

slm
I just deleted it so you'll need 10k to see it

10:36 PM
Actually, check for people who work in a related area to your package.
They are more likely to do an upload. Also #debian-mentors on OFTC is a reasonable place to ask.
What is the package?

@FaheemMitha a font

slm
The OP left a comment: SÜMER KOLÇAK.

heh

@Braiam RFP number?
@derobert Unless it isn't.

10:38 PM
@slm the question's ok, how about undeleting it and nuking only the account?

@Braiam No specific suggestions. Try posting to debian.mentors.net and see what happens, unless you have better ideas.

@Gilles hehehehehe

If nothing seems to be happening for awhile try poking individual devs.

ok

@Braiam you could also try asking upstream if they have any ideas. sometimes they have contacts.

10:43 PM
@FaheemMitha umm... the building tool isn't even available on Debian

@Braiam Not sure what you mean. You mean the build system it uses is not in Debian? Are you packaging that too?

@FaheemMitha no, the EULA seems pretty nasty and the sources are not available either adobe.com/devnet/opentype/afdko/eula.htm

@Braiam I'm confused. You realise that means it can't go into Debian, right?
The build system I mean. And therefore probably not your fonts either, unless there is a diffferent way to build them.

> This package has to go to contrib since it requires the proprietary
Adobe ADFKO to build from source.

@Braiam Broken link.

10:50 PM
The font itself is open, the building system isn't, the building system would be in non-free while the font would be in contrib

@Braiam Umm, I think even packages in contrib need to build using build dependencies in debian.
The build system you mention sounds like it would not make it even into non-free.
Hmm, pabs seems to be saying something different, but what he is saying is surprising. I can ask on #debian-mentors. One sec.

slm
OK, I've undeleted that Q

@Braiam yes, that is what is says in policy
> Examples of packages which would be included in contrib are:

> free packages which require contrib, non-free packages or packages which are not in our archive at all for compilation or execution, and
I'm amazed. I didn't think Debian was so liberal.

that's why it isn't in the GNU OS's list
Debian is a compromise between usability and policy
