I was planning on asking a question on SE asking why this isn't done, but then it occurred that it might be possible and I just don't know it
Is it possible to cd to a directory by its name alone, no relative path, given that it's the only directory with that name? Nevermind performance issues; is it simply possible?

1:45 PM
@JohnnyApplesauce It's possible to write a script that does a search and then cds the user to a directory. Is that what you are asking?

I know it's possible to write a script

But it might not be the fastest operation ever, depending on how many directories you have.

I just got the idea to write it
I want to know why it's not standard

If you want it faster, then you could do a hash table or similar on the directory names.
@JohnnyApplesauce Are you asking if just plain cd can do it?

No
I know it can't

1:47 PM
@JohnnyApplesauce Ok, then I'm not sure what you are asking.

I was making sure such a script didn't already exist, perhaps even as a default bash command

@JohnnyApplesauce I doubt it.

2:00 PM
Ah, better
question
How do I command-line download this?

2:11 PM
apt-get download... then what?

@JohnnyApplesauce sudo apt install wcd

2:59 PM
@JohnnyApplesauce I think you mean install, not download.
Download means downloading the binary package.
@JohnnyApplesauce Generally speaking tab completion works adequately.

3:21 PM
@terdon Hello! Are you there?

4:12 PM
@AJ9 Hey, what's up?

@fa
@FaheemMitha What is tab completion?

@JohnnyApplesauce When you hit tab while typing a string, and it tries to complete what you are typing.

Most (possibly all) shells will complete file and directory names if they are unique.
But I'm not a shell expert, so I just know it works.

And if the name is not unique and the options are not too many, it shows the list.
