@Fabby That isn't really accurate. There are a wide variety of questions posted here. And probably many of them aren't addressed properly for a variety of reasons. For example, they would take too much time to research, or the question isn't clear and people can't be bothered to ask for clarifications. Or the poster isn't forthcoming with clarifications.
Bottom line: there's plenty of (unpaid) work to be done if someone has the time and inclination.

@Kusalananda I disagree, just because he changed the answer doesn't mean he changed what OP is doing. All he's done is made it unclear what OP is doing

@Jesse_b You had posted a joke comment, so I deleted both the joke and the comment asking you to explain the joke, as well as the explanation.
That's why your name's still there.

2:52 PM
@terdon I don't think that was it though. The comment I was referring to is also deleted, but mosvy essentially got into an argument with me about whether or not OP is using a loop and then said "You started it!"
It was essentially:
him: There is no loop
me: The loop is in the question, op has only posted the changed line here but is still using a loop. Note the `do` in the answer
him: there is no loop
me: ...not worth arguing, but yes there is a loop
him: you started it! your comment wasn't helpful

Currently wondering why the emacs25 package appears to have an Emacs 26 version:
root@orwell:/home/faheem# apt-cache policy emacs25
emacs25:
  Installed: 1:26.1+1-3.2
  Candidate: 1:26.1+1-3.2
  Version table:
 *** 1:26.1+1-3.2 500
        500 deb.debian.org/debian buster/main amd64 Packages
        500 deb.debian.org/debian buster/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3:45 PM
Oh, a dummy package.

4:00 PM
@Jesse_b Oh that. Yeah, since he'd already deleted those, I didn't really check them. 'S all gone now, anyway :)

@FaheemMitha You think me smarter than I am... I'm just here to answer the questions that are so simple that no one else even bothers answering them... ;-)

@Fabby I don't think smarts really enter into it. It's a matter of doing the work.
(Assuming a normally functional mental state, that is.)

@FaheemMitha Compared to Ask Ubuntu, Unix & Linux questions are much smarter, except maybe the Kali ones, but I don't bother with those.
(as I don' have a need for Kali)
@terdon Thanks for making me LOL

Questions are often ill-posed, so often you need to cross-examine the poster.
Which is often fun.
@Fabby I hope you are having a good year so far. You haven't been around here much.

Oh and in my new group in my new company the smartest guy in the group is... Greek. (M.Sc. in Physics) @terdon
I call him "the Greek god". >:-)
@FaheemMitha New job.
And the old job wanted me to finish all of my projects before they let me go...

@Fabby Better than the old one?

9:11 PM
New people, new hardware, new processes, new tools...
You get the point
@FaheemMitha Definitely!

@Fabby Location?
@Fabby Did you?

@FaheemMitha Non-disclosed location in the Amsterdam Area.
@FaheemMitha Yes!

@Fabby I was just asking about the town/city. Or country, even.

But then the boss knew that giving me an insurmountable challenge is the way to get the best out of me!

I hear Amsterdam is a nice city. Is that where you were before?
I guess the Netherlands is in relatively good shape.

9:13 PM
@FaheemMitha before that I was in Hof, Germany

@Fabby Ah, so new country. Adventure.

Yup. 2 very cure security girls so far...

@Fabby Making new lady friends wherever you go? :-)

I forgot to mention that: New country...
And for someone my age it's a challenge.
@FaheemMitha I hope more than in boring Germany!
:D

I'm assuming it was supposed to be "cute", not "cure".

9:16 PM
Yeah. Didn't even notice I misspelled that!

Proofreading is a useful habit.
@Fabby You should cook for them.

Yeah, I do that for documents that will be filed...
Not in chat too much. Just a little to take out the most obvious mess.

@Fabby "take out the most obvious mess"?

@FaheemMitha spelling errors that are so bad that they make me say the opposite of what I'm trying to convene...

@Fabby Ok, I understand.

9:22 PM
frosted butts

cure is a logical spelling error as R and T are next to each other on the keyboard...

I mean. Hey gets what's up

:D :D :D
New job, Country, city, processes, people, HW, SW, tools,
I can now understand my dad who had to learn computers when he was about my age...

Well, Stack Exchange is still the same.
@Fabby Are people on the continent at all interested in this Brexit thing?

(But then, he had me and back in those days taking your 16 YO into the backoffice of a bank after office hours was no big deal)
@FaheemMitha I dunno. I think it's a lot of FUD.

9:25 PM
@Fabby What is?

The whole Brexit thing.

@Fabby I'm not sure what you mean. You mean the British are worrying about nothing?

I mean: if British parliament would have one braincell amongst them they'd read the existing Norwegian, Swedish, Swiss, ... deals that are not part of the EU and just mix and match from those and get EU approval within a week.

@Fabby I don't think leaving is a good idea at all.
But I was asking about the level of Continental interest.
For the UK, it's quite a thing. I almost feel sorry for them.
I was watching the House of Commons last week. I've never seen anything like it.

@FaheemMitha I can give you my personal opinion.
For the continental opinion, you would have to ask the continebt...
;-)
Meaning: I don't like to answer for other people.

9:31 PM
Meaning people around you.

It's not a hot topic for anyone not British or not European living in Britain

@Fabby Ok. I guess there is no reason why Europeans should care particularly.

One of my people in The Netherlands is English and I asked him: "Do you think I'll fire you on the day some government that's not yours any more did something stupid???"
When he asked me what influence this would have on him personally...

@Fabby Not yours any more?

@FaheemMitha Britain has never been part of the Euro-Zone so they're seen as half out to the EU already by most people...
@FaheemMitha Well, he lives in The Netherlands now...

9:35 PM
@Fabby But you say he's English.

It reassured him and made him laugh...

@Fabby Fair enough.

@FaheemMitha Yeah, so? He's paying Dutch taxes!

Unless he's now a Netherlands resident.

@FaheemMitha Indeed!

9:35 PM
@Fabby I used to pay American taxes. Didn't make me American.
Not that I would have objected. Probably.

@FaheemMitha It's not like India was trying to seccede from the USA while you were there!
;-) :D
Or getting its independence or whatever.

@Fabby I realise it's not exactly the same situation.

It's politics...
I've traveled the world and most people just want thre things, whether it's in the Americas, Europe, Africa or Asia:
1. A good life
2. A better life for their children
3. For their government to leave them the hell alone...

Sex, drugs, rock and roll?

@FaheemMitha For some: yes!
>:-) Not all of them though...
AFK BRB
@Jesse_b And how are you doing???
(need cookie: BB in a jiffy)

9:41 PM
@Fabby meh

Going to sleep now. Code being annoying. Take care, folks.

if (code.isAnnoying() === true) { goto.bed() };

@Jesse_b Can be shortened to:
if code.isAnnoying() { goto.bed() };
you don't need to compare a boolean to a boolean as it's already a boolean...
>:-)

come at me bro
Fine my hypothetical isAnnoying function returns a string instead of a boolean

What's your main occupation? *nix SysAdmin or coding?

9:48 PM
if (code.isAnnoying() === "true") { goto.bed(Faheem) };

@Jesse_b :D :D :D
sendto.bed would be a more appropriate method.
;-)

I'm a "cloud engineer" (system admin)
although I also do network related stuff

Oh? I used to be a Technical Project Manager Cloud.
I'm now a Data Centre Manager Cloud

the queen's english has no place here!

@FaheemMitha ---^example of spelling error I correct (not --> now)

9:51 PM
s/re/er/g

It's what I learned in school and I'm part of the EMEA org, so I use the majority international English...
;-P
(Even though I work for an American Company)
Fibre, Centre, ...
0:-) ;-)

the fibre one is dangerous

The fag one is even more dangerous!

fibre is a legitimate word in US english used to refer to fibre channel

I once exclaimed at the end of a conference call with all American public excep me:

9:53 PM
In all other cases it's fiber

"Hey guys, cut the chit-chat as I'm dying to get me a fag!"
Total silence
until someone asked:
What do you mean?

hah

I'm dying to go have a smoke...
Hilarious laughter...
And then I was explained what it means in EN_US
/shrug
I've made quite a few faux pas like that...
So what do you do in the cloud? IT industry or Customer pushing workloads to the cloud? @Jesse_b

@Fabby I mostly just do tier 1/2 troubleshooting on server and network issues

You fix the stuff that developers other people break
I wish I would have stayed in a technical role instead of going into management.
Technical issues are so much easier than people issues...

10:00 PM
naw I can apply workarounds to bugs but I'm not a very smart man

;-)
@Jesse_b When you think of yourself as "not smart" but you consistently pull solutions out of your arse hat that other people didn't think of...
... you should re-evaluate your intelligence!
;-)

My company has incredibly talented engineers though, and a culture that really emphasises making good code. We often have large scale outages and care more about finding the root cause to prevent it from happening again than just getting it up as quickly as possible
That came out wrong. We don't often have large scale outages, but when we do...they are dos equis

@Jesse_b proof

Meh

@Jesse_b Dos Equis is a beer, and they had "The Most interesting Man In The World" as an ad so your outages are interesting?
(If not: I have no clue what you're talking about)

10:06 PM
almost all my answers are related to bash. I would like to consider myself an expert in bash, but then I interact with all the wizards on here and realize I'm above average at best

@Jesse_b Above average is intelligent.
Average IQ is 100
110 is smart, 120 is very smart, 180 is genius!

@Fabby Heh no I was going to say "We don't often have large scale outages but when we do we care more about finding the cause than getting them resolved at all costs"
Honestly I don't really believe in the idea of intelligence. I mean obviously I have to but I think mostly it's a huge misconception

@Jesse_b I belive in solving htem ASAHP and doing an RCA at the same time.
(same or different teams)
@Jesse_b I do believe in "intelligence" whether it's emotional, verbal, or mathematical or a good combo is irrelevant.

I believe that with very few exceptions we all have mostly the same capabilities, but that it mostly comes down to confidence and passion

I know someone who needs a calculator to do 5*6 but knows > 1000 people by name, remembers all of their children's names and he gets things done where I go:
"Huh? How did he do that???"
so yes, he's intelligent, but his intelligence is different than mine.

10:10 PM
Well in either case you're only measuring intelligence by ones ability to memorize

@Jesse_b In your milieu: probably yes.
I've been in the military, and I can tell you: no, not true...

Meh
People that are often thought of to be stupid usually just had a poor upbringing
If your whole childhood the people you trusted and looked to for guidance kept telling you that you're stupid, you're going to believe it. And if you believe you are something you will become it

@Jesse_b I just listed 3 there are probably more than all the shades of colour in a 32 bit RGB scale...
@Jesse_b True...
... and false at the same time.
If you believe in yourself regardless what other people think of you, you can overcome your upbringing.
It's a full 32-bit colour world out there.

That's true in some cases but easier said than done in most

@Jesse_b Absolutely true!
Going with the flow is always easier than rowing against it.
That's why I only row against the flow if it's really worth it.
Otherwise I Meh too!
:D
OK. past midnight!
Good night!!!

10:16 PM
goodnight homeskillet
