Q: How can I use $var in a shell brace expansion of a sequence?

fred.bearI want to use $var in a shell brace expansion. Simply putting {$var1..$var2} doesn't work, so I went "lateral"... The following works, but it's a bit kludgey. # remove the split files echo rm foo.{$ext0..$extN} rm-segments > rm-segments source rm-segments Is there a more "normal" way?

Q: Is it possible to su without being prompted for a password?

ripper234I suspect su doesn't have any way to allow passing the password from the shell instead of being prompted for one, for security reasons (couldn't find anything in the MAN). Is this true?

A: Why does Linux scale so well to different hardware platforms?

BillThorThe Linux Kernel scales well because that is what it is. The core kernel is relatively small and does what it need to do. Device drivers are optional and can be left out of the kernel for smaller systems. The beyond the minimal kernel requirements most functionality is implemented as optional ...

Q: Output of the last command

Andrea SpadacciniCan anybody explain me what is the meaning of the last column of the output of the last command? I'm particularly interested in its meaning with respect to the reboot pseudo-user. P.S. can anyone properly tag it as last reboot or wtmp? I don't have enough reputation. Thanks.

Q: Where is the setting that sets Experimental repo to lower priority?

Q: How to set default APT source

Q: Lightweight M$ Paint/MacPaint equivalent FLOSS in Linux?

penyuanWhat is an equivalent to M$ Paint and MacPaint that works on Linux? There is a BSD-licenced one called Paintbrush that's great for Mac OS X, but I have not found one on Linux. I hope it can be lightweight, i.e. few dependencies, don't need GNOME, KDE, etc., but anything is fine.

Q: vim: Can I make *only* y perform a copy?

John BerrymanI'm learning to like vim, but one thing that I haven't yet fully embraced is the copy and paste situation. 9:19 PM
@Gilles what do you mean by positive priority? You talking about pinning?
0
A: How to set default APT source

GillesIf there is a wajig package with a positive priority in any of your sources, apt-get install wajig will install it. If I understand correctly, you'd like apt-get install wajig to work if squeeze has the latest version and not to work otherwise; I don't think that's possible.

@Tshepang Oh, yes, I forgot that default-release is not part of pinning. I'll clarify my answer

@MichaelMrozek is there a mod tool that allows u to check how many voters are eligible?

@Tshepang 374

is SO is any indicator, only 10% will participate

@Tshepang Other SEs have done more like 15-20%; math had 40%. We'll probably be pretty low I expect though

@MichaelMrozek is ur guess based on the very-low meta participation?

Pretty much; there's a lack of concern with maintenance/moderation stuff in general

9:58 PM
but math is quite impressive
probably has to do with fact that it was the first, if we dont count the trilogy?

They were before the trilogy, actually; before this set of elections anyway
And there was a lot of controversy on their meta about moderation stuff, so I'm sure more people were interested

10 pages + 3 columns + 3 = 10*35+3*7+3 = 374
@MichaelMrozek I don't expect the election to be hotly contested
And countries with one candidate for one position typically have very high participation
(Didn't Iraq have 100% participation on an election a few years ago?)

yeah, there's hardly anyone who seems interested to contest
but I'd like u Gilles to go for it
I really like ur laid-back kinda judgement
but as u said, maybe it doesn't make a big difference
