@ce4 I wanted to inform you that the Y cable solved it with a little bit from here : forum.xda-developers.com/…
@ce4 it could take 3 devices but when I connect the fourth device the phone restarts

11:36 AM
hi all

ce4
hi @MohamedEssam, nice to know you got it working (finally!) :-)

I think three devices is OK

ce4
BTW: you can answer your own question and also accept that (2 days later)

yes I was just going to do that

ce4
fine

11:44 AM
but after I connect the otg ( about 5 minutes or something) the phone shutsdown
and I open it again
not always but happens

11:58 AM
@ce4 do you know any reason so it would restart

ce4
12:25 PM
It's probably buggy/unstable and the reason why it's not included in the first place with the original ROM. Very little you can do about it except wait for new ROMs to be released (that hopefully fix this)

5 hours later…

So your Huawei's Android doesn't recognize the thumb drive? I.e., it's not shown in the settings? Hmm.
That was what i originally meant by "format it with your phone then". I.e. use the settings option in the 'storage' section
127|shell@android:/ $ which mkfs.vfat
/system/xbin/mkfs.vfat
Here's my mkfs.vfat command
It's a symlink to busybox, so it's part of busybox, you can also try to run it using 'busybox mkfs.vfat' optionally:
shell@android:/ $ busybox mkfs.vfat
BusyBox v1.20.2-jb bionic (2012-07-27 02:57 +0200) multi-call binary.

Usage: mkfs.vfat [-v] [-n LABEL] BLOCKDEV [KBYTES]

Make a FAT32 filesystem

-v Verbose
-n LBL Volume label
I'm not sure if it has some limitations though (on the max media size it can handle)

6:25 PM
@MohamedEssam: ^^

@Flow Things got ugly this weekend, but I see your REP is being injected with power-shells :D
Hi all :D

6:54 PM
@MohamedEssam on my Motorola, there's an /system/bin/mke2fs (but that will most likely generate an EXT2 filesystem)
Ah, I just found the others: all in /system/xbin -- mkfs.ext2, mkfs.minix, mkfs.vfat

I only want to know what verbose means
Usage: mkfs.vfat [-v] [-n LABEL] BLOCKDEV [KBYTES]

Make a FAT32 filesystem

-v Verbose
-n LBL Volume label
what should I write in verbose?

verbose output, probably
Reporting each single block handled, and the like.

in my case ?

Simply ommit it -- or just specify it (-v only, no additional thing) if you like it to talk a lot ;)

6:59 PM
So the command line should read something like:

how does it know to format what?

`mkfs.vfat -v /dev/whatever_it_is
or, if you want to specify a label

in my case "mkfs.vfat -v /dev/block/uba1"

mkfs.vfat -v -n MyFavoriteDisk /dev/whatever_it_is
Yepp
Sounds right.

I'm connecting it
it worked
thanks
@Izzy you can answer my question about it if you want

7:08 PM
@MohamedEssam thanks for your feedback -- will do!

@Izzy Saving the day once again I see ;)

actually @ce4 and @Izzy ,@Zuul.

@Zuul Yeah -- work, work... burp (grill on the terasse was fine ;)
And yes, @MohamedEssam is correct -- I cannot take all credits myself ;)

@MohamedEssam Yap saw it now :) Tks!

@MohamedEssam Answer is there, including explanations for the options.

7:17 PM
yes but can you edit it to add the busybox option ?

checking Ah, another difference. It's a separate binary in my case (not a symlink to busybox). Will update the answer, thanks for the hint (and the vote ;)

you're welcome

@Zuul Not really ugly, seems like I have a fan or so. But now everything is back to normal

and @Izzy BTW why isn't it appearing in my storage settings?

@Flow For me was like watching a movie... spend the entire day looking at your profile and observing things evolving :D

7:29 PM
@Izzy I could connect 4 flash drives at the same time
my brother has a xperia u it can only read 3

Cool. I a) never tried it, and b) my devices probably would not support it either...

8:03 PM
@Zuul as for "saving the day": I made my first "good question" :D
The "full backup" got the 25th upvote...

8:21 PM
hi @Izzy sorry had to go
you mean you never tried usb host?
if so I think you should try it with your Droid 2

Exactly. I only have 2 phones, both running Gingerbread (Android 2.3.x). AFAIK USB host was introduced with Honeycomb (3.x), and thus on phones would not be available bevore ICS (4.x).

if you think about it , that might help you android.stackexchange.com/questions/28763/…
you said that you're running cm7.2 on droid 2
it doesn't matter the version of android I'm 2.3.7

Humm, interesting. Yes, sure -- CM7.2. But I didn't hear USB host was backported to GB.

I'm running 2.3.7 (GB)
I already said the version doesn't matter

I see. I rawly followed your issues with the Y cable (and now get another idea what the background obviously was: The phone was not manufactured to support it, power-wise). So what you flashed probably was a patch -- I guess it contains some kernel modul(s).

8:28 PM
yes it only contains some .ko files

Thought so ;)

and I have to mount one called ehci-hcd.ko

Thank you for the hint, I'll keep that in mind! But as I a) do not really need host mode -- but in fact need my phone...
...I prefer not to experiment with it. At least not at the moment, where I would lack the time to fix things if they break ;)

for me I'll surely need it in the next months (studying) no pc :(

That's a reason, sure. For me it's the other way round: Need the phone to be reachable -- and sit on my PC having lots of work to do.
The latter probably gets delayed a lot due to my presence here xD
And I'm missing @t0mm13b with his Tasker experiment results xD

8:32 PM
I never use gsm internet
here in Egypt the data plans are expensive
is your job computer related?
if so , I don't think that you're going to need usb host that much

Q: Merge ext2, ext3, ext4 to extfs (and synonymize)?

IzzyEach of the ext-tags alone is not that much frequented currently. We have: ext2 (x5), ext3 (x2) and ext4 (x8). Shouldn't we merge them together into a new extfs, and convert the 3 old ones into synonyms? Or do they really make sense stand-alone?

Q: Merge hard-reset and factory-reset?

IzzyAnother two synonymously used tags: All 4 questions tagged hard-reset deal with factory-reset (x67). In fact, except for one they are even tagged factory-reset additionally. I'd suggest to merge those four questions into factory-reset, and optionally make hard-reset a synonym to factory-reset. T...

8:48 PM
It is -- but I do not think my customer would let me mount their rack servers and blades on my smartphone xD

9:38 PM
@Izzy: NP if you answered Mohamed's Q, just take it and overtake me ;-)
It's about Q&A here, don't hesitate and answer (linux basics) questions like how to format usb drives... using busybox components.
I've been afk, so...

ce4
10:05 PM
Oh, and by the way: Disagree with your merge-request on meta. If we merged those we had to find a new tag for pulling-the-battery-to-fix-hard-locks

hi @ce4 I could make 4 thumb drives work together

@ce4 NP, was just a suggestion and question -- if I'd been 100% sure about it, I'd just re-tagged the four Qs ;)

ce4
yeah, sure. I'm not 100% sure myself and will change my mind maybe (merge those 2 and add another 'hard-reboot' tag for example). I just see it the way @Matt does.
Do those 4 Q's use it properly then?
@Izzy: Hmm, thinking again, maybe use "hard-reboot" if the casual user (and we have plenty of those 1st time askers) associates it with "factory-reset" rather than pulling-the-battery-to-reset-a-lockup
OH and @Izzy: You you dare to overtake me, huh? :-)
Conrats!
s/Conrats/Congrats/ of course ...

10:45 PM
Ooops? Did I? Just chasing my Mail client at the moment (Evolution). After disabling some of its plugins (to figure out why it is so hell slow), it now doesn't even load my main accounts anymore :(
Thanx for the congrats ;)
Ugh that one solved -- that was some other config change I did a couple of days ago, but it only took effect after reboot xD

ce4
10:59 PM
@Izzy: yep, you're 20 ahead, saw this coming :-/ LOL.
