9:00 PM
Does @doorknob still hold the record? right?

As far as I know yes

Bolt is also in the club, right?

Well, I can (maybe) be part of the almost youngest moderators (club).

@Vogel612 depends on where you put the cutoff

I could (maybe) also join that club, but I'm two years above the youngest age, so maybe not

9:02 PM
Jamal and I are the only ones without comments. Is that good?
(No, I didn't kill myself in my driving lesson.)

@EthanBierlein It's a bit early to talk like that, isn't it?
2
@Hosch250 (Good, I don't like conversing with ghosts.)

@Hosch250 I'm actually not sure. I think for Jamal it's a good thing and I doubt he'll get many comments

@Mast That's why I put (maybe) in there.

@Vogel612 That's because if we comment on his post, he'll just edit it.

I have the most comments though. :(

9:04 PM
@EthanBierlein You could start by answering my question in the comments.

Just kidding.

@Mast I'm still working on it.

for you it's maybe not so much of a good sign, but I'm not so very experienced with elections that I'd want to be quoted on that

Y'all keep distracting me. :D

@EthanBierlein We
@EthanBierlein wouldn't
@EthanBierlein dare

9:05 PM
I love how my volume is completely turned down, so that had no effect.

@EthanBierlein To be honest, is that unexpected?

age is always fun in elections

@Undo Good thing or bad thing?

Some people care about it for what I think are wrong reasons

@Undo ~shivers at remembering the last SO elections

9:06 PM
I had some user call me self-centered or something like that in my nomination comments.

@EthanBierlein just now?

The user then deleted the comment.
To be honest, I don't exactly remember what he said, but he kept harping on about my age.

hmm... I'm not sure whether it was them, that deleted the comment
are nomination comments moderated?

Most of the people who really would vote here, I doubt have anything against younger people, right? After I did that query that showed we're mostly all young

Mods can still edit and delete nomination comments.
3

9:08 PM
@Quill oh... yea I wrote an answer to that

Hmm, maybe that's why that comment got deleted.

@Quill I'm planning to vote, and age doesn't really affect how I vote very much

@Jamal So that's why you have no comments...

If anything, I sway toward the younger folks because I've seen how much faster they can learn the tools.
2

/JK

9:09 PM
@Undo Yeah, you have the knowledge of how those shoes feel, most users don't have the shoe feels

@Undo A certain amount of maturity will be required to handle the situations they encounter though.

@Mast sure

@Undo Thanks for the comment on my post.

heh, no problem :)

Age isn't the deciding factor in that, but it usually helps.

9:10 PM
@Undo No prompting, please!

@Mast Do you think that we aren't capable of handling those situations?

@EthanBierlein define 'we'

Age is generally linked to maturity, but quite frankly if you're running for a diamond on an SE site you're squarely in the "age probably not linked to maturity" group.

@Mast Any young moderator.

@EthanBierlein I will most certainly refrain from making such generalized comments.

9:11 PM
@EthanBierlein Perhaps he's pointing out the frequent conversations you find yourself in at 2nd monitor :P

@Undo except for some notorious outliers, that somehow show up in every election, right?

@Vogel612 Whatcha mean?

I was hoping to get exactly that answer out of ethan without you helping :)

@Vogel612 sure, but there are other reasons one shouldn't vote for those folks.

@EthanBierlein As far as you personally go, I've already told you.

9:11 PM
true that

@Quill That's all just fun sometimes. In real situations, stuff like that should never happen.

@Vogel612 oh, sorry :P
I've had folks come to my rescue before on these kinds of issues, figure I should help out where I can

@EthanBierlein I know, that's just the kinda stuff you gotta watch for. That line
It's hard to see

Okay.

Treacherous the path into darkness is.

9:12 PM
Are you running, @SirPython?

@Undo Don't answer @Mast's question though. I'm working on it right now.

@Hosch250 No.

@Vogel612 Yes, I did very much like that answer, thank you

OK.

@EthanBierlein I didn't ask Undo a question.

9:13 PM
@EthanBierlein okay. If you answer it wrong I'll make Jamal edit it into a good answer :P

@Mast I know you didn't. I was just politely asking him to refrain from answering one of your comments on my nomination.

So far, only 2 candidates are going to be disappointed.

@Hosch250 I don't think I could handle the responsibility.

@EthanBierlein So what exactly are you talking about?

@QPaysTaxes How am I supposed to know!?

9:14 PM
@QPaysTaxes It's a matter of statistics.
6 running, 4 positions.

@Mast

Do the math.

> There are only four moderator positions available. Why do you think you're one of the four users that should be awarded this privilege and responsibility, instead of the other candidates?

6 nominated, 4 positions.

@EthanBierlein That's a question I asked you, Undo has nothing to do with it.

9:14 PM
I hope Simon runs.

@Hosch250 So do I.

me too

@Mast he asked me not to answer it.
Not seeing where the confusion is

@Mast Yes, I know that. Undo answered Vogel612's comment, rather than me.

oh, because I have a track record of answering other people's questions :P

9:16 PM
whaaaaaaat?!?!?!?
nomination comments don't onebox?

@Undo Don't.

@Vogel612 Nope

dammit.

@Vogel612 nomination comments are serially broken

that said, it's the reply you gave to the person mentioning your age.

9:17 PM
@Vogel612 Hmm yes?

are you sure it's a ... good idea to change your nomination post, just because someone one the internet didn't like it?

Well, let me ask you.
Do you think it's a good idea to include my age?

Yes. Because it gives you a way to hook people
it's also a facet you probably will have to put up with when getting into moderation

whispers keep it

A: 2015 Community Moderator Election

Mat's MugI'd like to see @nhgrif nominate for moderator. He's very active, in chat, on meta and on the main site, and he has an opinion on just about everything. And he's an Apple fanboy. Upvote this post to pressure him into nominating :)

9:19 PM
and you can't upvote the comments either?!

Hmm. Good point. I'm gonna re-add it.

and I think it's important you get a feeling for how people will address it

..or not

see that's what I mean

@EthanBierlein I did say, usually

9:20 PM
you will probably get that on a daily or at least weekly basis..

@Vogel612 That. So tackle it now, directly.
Without mercy.

Okay, let me come up with a better way of handling those kinds of scenarios.

Daily or weekly? Doubtful. Monthly or yearly? Probably.

@Undo you know better than me. It will come up though, and preparation for that is everything

Agree

9:23 PM
@Mat'sMug oh dear 2 downvotes?..

slow down, youngin. you got some time to put your nomination together, so take your time and think about it a little bit

^^ that
fools rush, where angels fear to tread
2

^^ oh your wisdom is golden

@janos I was just about to say "pure gold ^^", but you beat me to it. :D

and I'm just repeating canned wisdom from the java room and bitter experience

9:26 PM

Should I ask this everyone instead of just Ethand?
13 mins ago, by Ethan Bierlein
> There are only four moderator positions available. Why do you think you're one of the four users that should be awarded this privilege and responsibility, instead of the other candidates?

@Mast Maybe.

@Mast but then please get it into the Q&A suggestions :)

@Vogel612 btw I noticed you changed quite a bit over the months I've known you. You used to hammer bad questions pretty hard, and at some point it kinda stopped, you're a lot gentler nowadays. You should definitely run man. You know the SE network very well, and have a very good sense to guide off-topic posts to the right places, which will come handy when we start getting more traffic. + you're a real Git ninja and taught me some cool tricks

@janos thanks, but that's probably because I'm less active than I used to be around here.
and I get to blow off a lot of steam on the java room

9:30 PM
@Janos Why don't you run?

I probably will ;-)

OK.

this room is too engaging, I'm having a hard time concentrating on writing my nomination

Run! Run! Run! Run! Run!

@Vogel612 It would be great if someone could pin that question, I lost it...
Oh, here

9:32 PM
^^ this should do it

Wow... I feel like I don't have as much of a chance if janos, Jamal, Hosch250, Mat'sMug, and Malachi. I'm still gonna try though.

that's the spirit :)

I will do this try.

@EthanBierlein it's the journey, not the destination ;-)

Words of wisdom @all ^^

9:34 PM
@EthanBierlein Do or do not. There is no try.
2

Words of Yoda @all :D ^^

Wow... I feel like I don't have as much of a chance if janos, Jamal, Hosch250, Mat'sMug, and Malachi. I'm still gonna try though. I feel the same

@EthanBierlein No, Yoda style it would be more along the lines of
Not try you must. Do or do not.

Sorry, on mobile, can't find the quote button

@Quill ►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►

@EthanBierlein Ah, he starts with Try not.
Close enough.

@Mast it won't let me pin it.... yet....lol jk

@EthanBierlein You can't try, because we won't catch.

Wait, do moderators have to step down after a year for the next election?

No.

9:45 PM
Ah. And if no moderators step down?

They host elections at most once per year, depending on whether the site needs new moderators for any reason (step down, more positions...).
At least, that is how I understand it.

@Hosch250 That's also how I understand it.
If nobody steps down, there will be no new elections.
Unless there is a need for one more moderator.

Moderators can be removed.

@nhgrif And that.

@nhgrif happens rather seldom though.

9:52 PM
I can only think of one time in the last year where that happened

Mark Rage went on a rage fit.

Who's Mark Rage?

@Hosch250 Oh, that guy.

Former mod on another SE site.

I remember a meta about him.
People thought he was hacked.
Turns out he wasn't.

9:53 PM

Q: What's with the angry chef picture?

Olin LathropSomeone using Mark Rage's account is editing whole questions and answers to just contain this picture: There are many examples, here is just one, but others are easy to find. What the heck is going on?

oh, so two

That was in Feb 2015.

I've been a lurker on EE.SE for quite some time.

@Undo wasn't there some drama on Programmers too?
overzealous post cleanup and intervention by shog?

GO JAMAL!

9:56 PM
@EthanBierlein
> this will change if I'm elected

Sorry, is that not a good thing to say? :P

how about.....

Guys, stop interrupting @Malachi :D

> I am working on this and it will increase wether I am elected or not
@EthanBierlein lol it's all good

@Malachi Weather?

9:58 PM
Yes, it'll make everything storm, like it is right now.

We aren't Meteorology.SE, so that isn't a pun.

My fingers can spell but they don't always spell the right word....

I thought there was a storm close from the clouds.

I think that should be spelled whether
@Hosch250 It's raining where I'm at rn.

I don't know weather to upvote or ... Eh, what the heck. +1. — RubberDuck Aug 19 '14 at 0:18

9:59 PM
(For those who don't know, I live fairly near to @EthanBierlein.)

@Mat'sMug you just need Copy Editor
Hi @hichris123!
how is it going?

Hi!
I'm fine. :)

Hey @hichris123 - was talking about you earlier

@QPaysTaxes Hi hi! Yes, you did. :)
@rolfl ... good or bad?

Hi, @hichris123.

10:04 PM
@hichris123 Something about mod abuse

oh heh.
2 hours ago, by rolfl
@Vogel612 I never actually set my chat "about me"..... some other mod ( cough @hichris123 cough ) did that for me.

There ya go ;-)

@rolfl Talking about that, you set Duga's...

I did

32 secs ago, by rolfl
There ya go ;-)
Only, Duga should have said that ^

10:06 PM
I should totally answer a question (like I've been promising for a year or so) just so I can vote in this election.

@hichris123 I have one without an answer.
Mine is C#/XAML/WPF.

I don't -- but I probably should.
Yeah, I don't know C# either.

What do you know?

You only need to know one...
XAML is awful easy...

@rolfl I know Stack Exchange fairly well. ;)

10:08 PM
@Jamal I answered your comment and I have been looking at my old answers as well. Spam is in your face, go to my site, style questions or answers. those examples were the kind of things that should be discussed on Meta, like we did there. someone was concerned whether or not someone was strictly trying to lure people away from the site or trying to give good information. it was decided on both cases that they weren't doing that, but they were bad answers.

or perhaps some android, java, mysql, php ?

Do you know SQL?
I've got a couple SQL queries I could ask a question with.

@hichris123 Some SEDE queries

From the SEDE.

10:11 PM
@Hosch250 Depends if you mean "Can you write a SQL statement?" or "Can you make my SQL query pretty & more efficient". My expertise in the latter is simply to create indexes. :P

@hichris123 this sounds like a really really bad idea.
even to a ORM-loving dev like me

Well I mean... an index did bring a query from 30 seconds - 0.01 seconds for me, so it can't be all bad...
Although that was a really simple query that needed an index badly. :P

figured as much

Possible candidate question: As a moderator, would you resist superpinging Jon Skeet?
4

@Jamal Why should we ;)
Just kidding, I could.

10:13 PM
@hichris123 it won't ever help with the fugly structure I have to deal with at work, so...
once burnt, twice shy

I believe if you do that, your diamond is automatically taken away by Community. ;-)

lol

:O
@rolfl You are stepping down anyway, can you check the veracity of Jamal's statement?
2
Just kidding, and I'm sure @Jamal is too.
@Quill Doubt that Jamal is kidding?
Or doubt that Community de-mods you?

why are so many messages removed?? ~confused

@Jamal On a first offense, you get an e-mail from the system that says "Look, I couldn't resist doing that too, when I first gained sentience. But please don't do it again."

10:19 PM
Hey @Pops, How is it going!
take it that you have done that?

What? Me? Nooo... I just... read about it... in the code....
3

probably everyone did it, Jon is always preparing for the day it happens when elections are announced

Lol.

@Pops may I call you a liar now ? ;)

I think @Pops is teasing us too.

10:21 PM
@Vogel612 Give me one second to update my "ignore" settings... okay, go for it.

Q: What is "code" and what should a DIYer know about it?

Billy ONealI've heard people who work in construction and here on this site discuss "code", and when this happens someone sites a specific document such as the National Electrical Code or International Plumbing Code or similar. (I'm assuming electrical and plumbing would be most important because they both...

right now if you sort (elections.stackexchange.com/#codereview.stackexchange) by join date, I am at the top... imagine that!

Heh, I just found a bug on elections.se

that site is probably riddled with bugs

Instead of saying "pro term" it says "pro tem"

10:25 PM
that's kinda... the way it should be.

Pro Tempore
Latin for ... something

Yeah, it is right.

"for the time being" I think?

@Malachi Whomever finds this chat message will be rewarded.
3

you did it didn't you @Jamal?

10:27 PM
Me? Nope.

I have a feeling that moderators aren't that silly.

@Jamal should be simple with a single query against the prod chat database

Bring It

@Jamal what exactly do you mean? I am a little confused. maybe I should have had one more cup of coffee today....

SELECT * FROM messages WHERE UserId = (SELECT Id FROM Users WHERE DisplayName = 'Pops') AND Body LIKE '%@@22656:stackoverflow@@%'

10:30 PM
are you talking about my post and then pops post?
10 mins ago, by Pops
What? Me? Nooo... I just... read about it... in the code....

17 mins ago, by Hosch250
@rolfl You are stepping down anyway, can you check the veracity of Jamal's statement?
What I do know is that if you get JonSkeet on Code Review.. the C# and Java folk won't vote for you in an election

^^ that

@Malachi There's really no reward. ;-) But it would be funny to see such a message from Pops, which may not even exist.

Who cares.

@Jamal Actually, I'm just as confused as Malachi.

10:37 PM
@rolfl I encourage @JonSkeet to come to Code Review and start answering iOS questions. Every iOS question on SO we've both answered, my answer has twice as many upvotes.

lol

Heh, get a Guru against skeet ... that should have a gold-badge of it's own

A: Weird generics error

nhgrifFor starters, let's explain the error: Given: class Foo<T:Hashable> { } class SubFoo<String> : Foo<String> { } The confusing part here is that we expect "String" to mean the Swift defined structure which holds a collection of characters. But it's not. Here, "String" is the name of the gene...

I think I get it now

@Pops Blasted coffee

10:39 PM
I got Populist against Skeet:

the person to find the post of you (@Pops) super pinging @JonSkeet

Ahhh. Yeah, good luck with that.

Oh good, I thought it was about the reward. I wasn't ready to bounty off all my rep to the winner anyway.

Some SEDE, anyone?

Q: 2015 Community Moderator Election - Nomination Requests

Vogel612In the light of the currently running nomination phase of the 2015 Community Moderator Election, I want to add this question as a place for the community to nudge candidates on the edge into actually nominating themselves. This seems to be customary around the network: Some sites like to hos...
