00:00 - 13:0013:00 - 23:00

12:00 AM
They thought that I was fine, and I was whining an complaining at the hospital at one point: so much for a 15 year old...

Heh, they just gave my friend morphine and then she wasn't mentally competent to give any description of how she was doing

12:22 AM
Hey @aaossa

12:35 AM
Ahh, feels nice when you splatter down an offensive flag :)

1 hour later…
1:51 AM
Hi @Zi
@Zizouz212 *

@aaossa Hey there!

What's up?

A ceiling, possibly some wood, asphalt shingles, and definitely some air (don't know what it is composed of) :P
How bout you?

Well, basically the floor of my neighbour

lol

2:07 AM
I lost the thread at the end of the conversation in my question
What's your advice? :P
lose*

lost the thread? You mean on your question?
This?

Q: Is this GPLv3 licensed code "publishable" in GitHub?

aaossaI'm developing a desktop app and i'm using StrapDown.js. My question start with the StrapDown project page. It says: This project is released under the GPLv3 license, for more details, take a look at the LICENSE file in the source. My doubt comes with the fact that he has "hidden" the project ...

(I don't know, i'm not a native english speaker)
Yes

What I recommend?

I mean about the comments under your answer

To be honest, it looks very shaky, and I would try to avoid the library
Out of curiosity, what are you trying to use it for?
@aaossa Don't worry, it's all good :)

2:10 AM
I'm doing a markdown editor at the moment (using node webkit)
But it seems that this library uses another one (lets say b), so i could use b it for my own, instead of using the first one

2:34 AM
@aaossa Sorry bout that, I had to run around and do something really quick for work
Anyways, I assume that strapdown is something to process markdown then?

1 hour later…
4:02 AM
Yes, it is @Zizouz212. The idea is that processes a markdown text and display it as a html page.

Ah
There should be some other libraries (and licensed under a really friendly license too)

Yes, i'll be searching tomorrow

I would try a different library: You could try asking on software recs

Does all the licenses require that all my project uses the same license as its dependencies?

Nope
Use the [open-source] tag and ask for a permissive license such as the MIT license, or the Apache 2.0 license
Or honestly, just ask it here
We had a recent discussion over whether to allow "library-requests" and I want an example question
Perhaps you could start?
If it doesn't work out, I'll migrate it over

4:06 AM
Okay

:D

Should i do it now? It's late over here

If you want you could do it now, but you can also do it tomorrow, as there is many more people that are active
I'd recommend tomorrow

Maybe i could just ask the same question that i wrote before: Does all the licenses require that all my project uses the same license as its dependencies?

You may get down voted on that... :/

4:08 AM
Yes haha

Also, ask the question when I'm around so that I can tell the other moderators not to close it
That wouldn't be helpful :)

Hey @Air

Air
I just got a really interesting link from a user on Law SE about the potential for application of adverse possession to intellectual property law. Here's the paper - it's not directly relevant to open source, but I think it might be interesting to the sort of people who hang out here
2

Cool. I'll check it out :)

Air
4:12 AM
@Zizouz212 Hi. I just came to drop the link - it's late here and I'm half past beer-o-clocks

Ah, it's late here too, and I'm too lazy to sleep :/

Air
ahh, but just think of how good it feels to be rested! Or, how bad the opposite
I think if I had slept more in high school - and spent less time reading books with a flashlight - I would be taller as an adult.

lol
I do that all the time too :)

Air
It's kind of worse as an adult because I can leave the lights on and do whatever I want, for as long as I want (or until my wife murders me) - but it's healthier for my eyes, at least.

lol, sounds like my mom with my dad

Air
4:17 AM
Ugh. Stop making me feel old. :P

Sorry :(

When did you become an adult? :( I don't want to

Air
When I spawned a subprocess

2 hours later…
6:10 AM
@Air So that's where all of earth's resources are going!

3 hours later…
8:45 AM
boy am I happy that my meta answer to the goals question wasn't voted into oblivian

@Martijn It got my upvote

when the first two votes were downvotes, I was fearing the worst

9:03 AM
Hi... I need some cheesy music with an ukelele please.

Now that that's out of the way, I must ask
@WilliamD.Edwards Why exactly do you need cheesy ukulele music?
And how did your search end up bringing you here?

That's exactly what I need.
;)

Glad to be of assistance.

Just looking for inspiration for a YouTube commercial!

I see your kid, and I raise you the proms
@WilliamD.Edwards keep in mind your limitations in using works you don't have a license for to re-use though!

9:11 AM
Naturally :)

Honestly though, how come you came to this chatroom?

Because Open Source people are always helpful?
Actually I have no idea.

@WilliamD.Edwards fair enough

@WilliamD.Edwards If you're looking for free works, you could try Wikimedia Commons
they have a fair bit of audio material under CC-BY-SA as its most restrictive

Also for use in commercials?

9:21 AM
yes, but mind the SA (share-alike) clause
there is also some less restrictive material there, but not much

Thanks for the suggestion.

That being royalty-free would be a godsend.

I'm not sure if a audio-visual work would constitute a derivative work of the music used in it, so you may have to license the entire commercial ss-by-sa 3.0 if that's the case, or not if that's not the case
I am 100% sure that it would make an excellent question on the site though (hint hint)

If I had an account on Open Source.SE, I would.

9:29 AM
IMO having your commercial licensed cc-by-sa is not a problem, and I might be able to convince you of that, but I don't think I'd be able to convince your hypothetical client of that

Ha, true true.

don't they link up automatically from your other SE accounts? That is, click create account -> done?

@WilliamD.Edwards it only takes one click
or is it two?

a few

Let me see.
Takes 2.

9:30 AM
maybe it's two, create account -> with SE account -> done

Crikey, I'd rather continue listening to my M83...
Context: YouTube commercial.

If an audio-visual work would constitute a derivative work of the music used in it, would you have to license the whole commercial as CC-by-sa 3.0?

Answer: yes.
but I don't know if the if there holds

I think I should post that exact content as a question.

the if should definitely be part of the question, as that's the tricky part to answer

9:38 AM
Yes.
One thing: isn't Open Source.SE only for Open Source software?

heh
no
we're very busy making that clearer

The title placeholder is 'What's your open source software question?' and the sidebar says 'Is your question about open source software?'

@ArtOfCode thanks for putting a lock on that meta thread

we're in the process of changing the name (and have engaged in holy war where we can't come to much consensus, but that's a different matter)

Maybe put the notice at the top though?

9:40 AM
Good idea...

@WilliamD.Edwards Yeah, it's an issue

How long has this site been in Beta?

@WilliamD.Edwards 59 days

there is a meta discussion on the title placeholder as well, but that hasn't come to a conclusion (yet? can we finalize that?) either

Why not just remove 'software'? Can't be that hard?

9:41 AM
@WilliamD.Edwards The problem is I can't do it, we need SE involvement

Ah, okay.

@WilliamD.Edwards it would be a start, but we want to moe away from just using Open Source

@Martijn But yes, that's on my list of things to get SE involved about

On another note, the gradient on 'Open Source' here in the chat room is off. (Right bottom corner.)

@WilliamD.Edwards Aye, but that's unlikely to get fixed - chat doesn't get a lot of dev love
@overactor Jeez, you were quick to pick up on that

9:43 AM
the text in the bottom right you mean? Quickly looking at it, it's an image, and I presume it's auto-created by something, just a font with a drop shadow or something

Perhaps, I can't stand it haha.
It's also placed slightly lower than the 'Beta' word.

@ArtOfCode I'm always watching

I think the beta is just an unusually low superscript

Q: How should we license this YouTube commercial?

William D. EdwardsContext: YouTube commercial. If an audio-visual work would constitute a derivative work of the music used in it, would you have to license the whole commercial as CC-by-sa 3.0?

Edit if you like.

I made a quick edit, just for the if part

9:45 AM
Quick :)

I wonder if any site before us has ever had such a difficult time deciding on a name.

I made another edit :)

I saw.
@overactor Yes, I remember being part of an SE site in Beta that had to do with web development AND web design but they couldn't think of a name for describing both.

I started an edit war :P

I noticed ;)
That must be a record right there.
3 edits in less than 7 minutes?

9:47 AM
@Martijn :P
@WilliamD.Edwards 4.

Hahaha...

5.
6.

@WilliamD.Edwards Are you sure the troubles there were as bad as ours?

Q: Alternative site name brainstorming

curiousdanniiSince there are still many people unsatisfied with the current site name, I thought it would be good to have a centralised place for some brainstorming. In technicality, it should actually be CC BY-SA without a dash between CC and BY

Q: More site name brainstorming - Part II

ArtOfCodeToday, we had a visit from Tim Post to discuss our potential name change. Free & Open was the highest voted suggestion on the site name brainstorming post, and b...

Q: More site name brainstorming - Part III

GillesIn episode 1, we discussed changing the site name. A pretty much consensual answer proposed Free & Open. In episode 2, it was revealed that there is no longer a consensus. The proposal for “Free & Open” was sniped down for mysterious reasons, and while it is one of the few that maintain a positi...

@overactor Yes, although I must admit we did not have 3 parts :/

Good to know that we're not alone

9:50 AM
Then again, I think you're struggling with an identity issue anyway. meta.opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/591/…

@WilliamD.Edwards Look at the page title... "CC BY-SA 3.0 NL"

The <title> includes the dash though.

That's what I mean

Damn, you're right. Thanks Google.

<title>Creative Commons — Attribution-Share-Alike 3.0 Netherlands — CC BY-SA 3.0 NL</title>

9:52 AM
The result in Google shows the dash: CC-BY-SA-3.0-nl - Creative Commons but you're right.

@WilliamD.Edwards Everyone blame Google then :)

/me blames Google

10:25 AM
@ArtOfCode Do you think a meta question "What do we need to resolve urgently?" where answers link to other meta quetsions with important issues is a reasonable idea?
Part of me thinks it could be useful, part of me thinks it will likely get closed within minutes.
@Zizouz212 and @Mnementh, asking you too ^

@overactor what do you think you'll gain from that question?

@Martijn It gives us an overview and indication of what we really need to resolve
plus directs some more attention to the original threads

with the premise that having that overview would resolve them quicker?

It feels like it's not how SE usually does things though
@Martijn It makes sure that we don't forget about things and that we get more opinions on those issues.

so basically it's a votable priority list?
A problem I see is that when things are resolved, they don't drop off automatically
but I guess we could delete answers for threads that are resolved

10:31 AM
exactly
@Martijn yup
A bit how weekly challenges work on some sites
or question sandboxes
We could also edit resolved issues down to just a title
Maybe we need a meta post about whether we need this meta post?

Does it give us much extra over what selecting hot questions, top weekly questions and/or top monthly questions does?
I mean I suppose meta questions are already sorted by priority through their votes

@Martijn Urgent and popular is not necessarily the same though

This is true

Another issue is older questions that haven't been resolved yet
And of course, there is only limited space.
especially with featured questions

I postulate that if we have questions that haven't been resolved for over a month, there is either no consensus to implement any answer, or it's not so urgent (or some mod would have done something earlier)
I suppose it could work though

10:37 AM
@Martijn some things can't be done by mods (needs CM)

we can always try it
if it doesn't work, no harm done

I'd like to see what the mods think first though.

as a side note: has anyone seen mnemeth around lately? I haven't seen all that much of him recently

must be me then
if opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/1666/… doesn't get a good answer, it might be a nice candidate to punt to CC's or OSI's mailinglist
(as well as giving it a nice bounty)

10:43 AM
good point
You know what, that title bugs me.
It's not very descriptive.

{{sofixit}}

check
I was basically just thinking out loud
except
it wasn't out loud
because I typed it

I got pings
it was pretty loud for me
(I didn't actually get pings)

good to know :)
@Martijn I'm just thinking out loud here...

yeah, that was pretty loud

10:57 AM
I have now posted 5 out of 20 name suggestions in the latest thread...
Maybe It's time I stop :)

11:32 AM
@Martijn is the fact that it's a commercial really that relevant?

@overactor possibly, but correctness
I presume it's not a youtube video that is a commercial, but a commercial that runs before youtube videos
so it's a different beast entirely really
not that it should matter that it's a youtube anything

@Martijn oh, that could very well be
maybe remove youtube from the title?
Then again
youtube comercial isn't too bad I suppose

but cutting it from the title shouldn't matter
Especially since I don't know the answer, I prefer not to cut any context from the question that might be useful to someone who does know the answer

@Martijn It is in the body of the question though.

yeah, hence cutting it from the title shouldn't matter
(I don't know if that came through, I had a connection hickup)

I did, seems like I misinterpreted

Q: What are the limits of Libre when publishing open access controversial books?

One example could be Uncle Fester books or WikiLeaks...

VTC?

+1
it might be a candidate for law.SE, but I don't know if it is sufficiently focussed for that. Frankly, I don't think it is

@Martijn you're very likely right
It has problems besides being off-topic

@overactor I says good idea. I don't have the time right now to make it though, so go ahead

@ArtOfCode I'll get on it

@ArtOfCode does the discussion with programmers.SE question still need to be featured?

I did, no strong opinions either way. I'm letting you lot close it if you want to :)
It's in review

Hmm, I thought it was a no-brainer
I suppose it wasn't if you don't feel strongly
@overactor <- @Zizouz212

Hmmm... no, I suppose you're right, after a bit more of a look
3 close votes is enough for me to justify hammering the rest

@ArtOfCode yeah, it's like a double powered close-vote
seems appropriate

Yeah, makes is 2 CVs instead of 5

12:54 PM
@Pandya were you going to VTC?

4 is even more so, because then I'm basically acting as one of the community would

@overactor I didn't understand your meant; VTC?

Vote To Close
@ArtOfCode Yeah, I always felt like moderators can act according to their own personal opinion at that point

@overactor for what?

with some restrictions

12:56 PM
@overactor For once :)

@Pandya oh, I thought you were reading this question to see if you think it should be closed.

Then again, even at 4 close votes it does still take more consideration for a mod to close vote than normal, because a mod closing a question (even as one of 5) gives a signal that "the closing of this question was the correct action and is unlikely to be debated"

@overactor ok. btw, it is obviously off-topic

@ArtOfCode yeah, might need to add a comment explaining some stuff in some cases.

Aye, I'm debating a comment on that one at the moment

12:59 PM
Really, I think it is way off topic and unlikely to be opened again, but if you're not 100% confident, definitely go ahead
can't harm
