@overactor It's not about scope, onöly what the question is about.

Q: Does open hardware attract contributors in similar speed as open source software early on did?

HDE 226868This originally sprang out of this Meta question, and then a quick discussion in chat. This question is designed to test the underlying assumption behind the Meta question. It seems to some that open hardware is developing slower than open software is, though there are a non-negligible amount of...

@Mnementh, oh, I misread that a bit. Limit it to electronics I'd say then.
Other fields have little to do with the hardware you mean. And if they grow and open electronics don't, that's a bad sign, if anything.

@overactor: yes, that was the point I brought that up, i remembered thingiverse, mostly not electronics, but a lot of people creating cool stuff
If the question is limited to electronics maybe the close-voters will be content too, the vote-reason is too broad
The original french 'The Returned' is now also on Netflix (the german one). I'm happy. I wanted to watch that as the remake is pretty cool.

2:40 AM
@Mnementh are you sure about closing your question? As I said, there seem to still be some things that have not yet been said. eg: is CC0 accepted as a free and/or open license.
This wasn't really asked originally.

Hallooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@HDE226868 Nice answer. See my comment on the other post. He's not active here either...

Q: What's the policy on editing "technical" terms?

Zizouz212I recently made a review that you can find here (Note that the "Emacs" spelling changes were made after I had done the review). Also note that the author subsequently approved of the edit. The edit made the sole change: open source to free software. If you're wondering why, I rejected the edit, ...

@Zizouz212 A late hello back!
@Mnementh In that case the answer wasn't much of an answer really though.

@Zizouz212 I'm not hypocritical. I said in chat, that RMS himself is prefering free software, so probably the edit is OK. Anyways, the author of the answer made his intent clear with another edit and I respect that.
@overactor Not sure. Zizouz asked in his question for differences, and that goes both ways (so including my question). The answer of apsillers in Zizouz question covers all bases, so would work as answer on my question too.
I just didn't remember anymore that Zizouz already had asked such a question, sorry.
Wow, late-coming answers like these are the reason I give it at least a day before I accept answers:

A: Can I create a derivative of an old book?

Free Radical Copyright for old works expire at some point. In most countries that happens 70 years after authors death. Can I take a book with expired copyright (say Dickens Oliver Twist), [...] and release the result under an open license (let's say CC-BY-SA)? According to the Berne convention, works m...

@Mnementh I think he means Eric is being hypocritical
@Mnementh I typically wait at least a week, until the dust has settled

@overactor Ah, I see now what was referenced
@overactor Wow, in that time I have forgotten about my question. I'm too old, not remembering things ;-)
But clearly, waiting until many people have seen the question and had the chance to answer is better before handing out the accept

10:46 AM
Should I split this?

@Pandya This are two distinct topics that can be answered independently, so maybe. It's up to you though, so far the question did not get close-votes for being too broad.

@Mnementh I've revised it and split this

Yes, I saw, I splitted my answer too.

11:11 AM
OK, I was 11 minutes off. 11:11 UTC, and I'm back.

@ArtOfCode ???

@Mnementh I said I'd be back at 1100 UTC Sunday. It was actually 11:11 UTC Sunday...

You should have pulled that stunt on November 11th
@ArtOfCode Ah, I understand

That would have been good... 11:11 11/11/15... should also have done it 4 years ago, really.

@ArtOfCode yep
has contributions of 20 musicians

Nicely done. You're waaayyy ahead of the rest of us

@ArtOfCode I had luck that I could be active while the Beta started

Yeah, you've just managed to be incredibly active... I thought I was active xD

Now with enough answers in high voted questions I often have 50 more rep after I wake up from sleep
Also, the topic of this site matches with some things I was interested in and have some knowledge
That all helps

Afternoon @overactor

@ArtOfCode hiya

Halloooo!

hi all

Hey there :)

12:30 PM
Hallo!

btw, why name "The Bikeshed" of this chat room? @Zizouz212 @ArtOfCode

Q: What should we name our chatroom?

Madara UchihaThe default was Open Source, I, on a whim, changed it to The MIT License. Let's let the community decide, how should we name our chatroom?

@Mnementh Yeah, wrong context on the "hypocritical..."
@Pandya Your first question still feels a little broad

@Zizouz212 welcome to any suggestion

@Zizouz212 The bikeshed-suggestion was deleted by owner that is now oonly userx - was it tichodrama?

@Zizouz212 ya, I also unable to found any suggestion like "The Bikeshed"

12:37 PM
@Pandya The Bikeshed-emtaphor goes back to a management-book from Parkinson in the 60s, claiming that a board of directors will approve of a nuclear power plant, because it is so complicated nobody can really say something, but if you propose a new bikeshed, everyone has something to criticize
That was brought up again in a mail in the BSD-mailing list: bikeshed.com
@Zizouz212 Should we undelete that post again?

Essentially, people will spend time arguing about trivial things instead of solving more important matters. cough many many licensing questions cough

12:52 PM
Should we undelete that post again? Otherwise it looks like the community made a different decision

I'll leave it open in good faith,

@Mnementh We can't, I see no undelete button. Instead:

A: What should we name our chatroom?

ArtOfCodeThe Bikeshed This is now the name of the chatroom - I changed it when it became apparent the voting went in this suggestion's favour. Originally proposed* by Carpetsmoker (user38) whose account has since been deleted, a 'bikeshed' refers to Parkinson's Law of Triviality. It states that in organ...

room topic changed to The Bikeshed: General discussion for opensource.stackexchange.com. Confused about the name? Here's an explanation. [bikeshed] [discussion]

@ArtOfCode: Good solution

hmm, yes, undelete privileges are gone with public beta

12:56 PM
You need 2k rep to see deleted posts and to vote to (un)delete questions, but 4k to vote to (un)delete answers
Flag it for undeletion. The poster shouldn't have deleted their content before removing their account.

@Gilles thanks, that'll be why
Flagged it

@Zizouz212 thanks for linking and @ArtOfCode thanks for that
btw, I've also participated.

It was a different user, also posted one of the highest votes questions on the site.

Free and open-source software (FOSS) is computer software that can be classified as both free software and open-source software. That is, anyone is freely licensed to use, copy, study, and change the software in any way, and the source code is openly shared so that people are encouraged to voluntarily improve the design of the software. This is in contrast to proprietary software, where the software is under restrictive copyright and the source code is usually hidden from the users. The benefits of using FOSS can include decreasing software costs, increasing security and stability (especially in...

Q: Status of reaching out to organizations besides OSI

Eric GärtnerSome time ago it was asked and affirmed that this site should reach out to organizations beside OSI. Some of us committed to this task. What is the status of this reaching out? Has contact been made? By whom? To whom? With what request? What was the response?

@curiousdannii Make an edit :-)
It's spooky how long my question about the terminology GNU/Linux get's reactions. I seemingly hit a nerve with that.

@Mnementh The Hot Network Questions list certainly helps. I think that was on there.

@HDE226868 It still is, on page two. But how questions get chosen for the HNQ-list?

11:19 PM
@Mnementh I still can't seem to find the exact details, but it depends on whether or not the question gets a certain amount of views/votes/related activity on the site within a certain amount of time, if I remember correctly.
The page on the list a question appears on, by the way, is just random.

Interesting. So anyways, an active question gets to HNQ and being on HNQ brings in more activity. Which was first, egg or chicken

Exactly. It's a cycle.
I've found that having a question on the HNQ list garners lots of views, votes, answers, and badges, but it often doesn't help me get a good answer to my question any more than not having the question on the HNQ list would.
