Q: Are licensing posts going to dominate Open Source?

JamenAfter looking in the "Tags" page on the main site... I've noticed that out of the top 5 tags, 3 of them are licensing tags (license, creative-commons, and licensing)... The top tag on the site being the license itself... Not only what's state above, but the license tag (with 55 questions at ...

Q: Should we have separate tags for license versions?

curiousdanniiWe currently have gpl, gpl-2 and gpl-3 tags. Is it useful and helpful to have these tags, or should we stick to only one tag for all versions. If we shouldn't, then can we make them synonyms?

@ArtOfCode the latest episode was now-deleted comments on meta

Guys, I've used up all my suggested edit reviews today, someone else needs to take over

11:04 AM
@ArtOfCode I don't have the rep I'm afraid...

Ah well, someone else will do :)

11:17 AM
Is it me, or does opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/503/… seem to invite holy war?

11:39 AM
Hi @Zizouz212

hey
You probably noticed that I rejected a whole bunch of your edits...

Only some

Anyways, you were saying in the comments...

I'm okay with that. It's still such early days and our tags are very unrefined

Did you create some tags, I noticed a couple new ones when I was reviewing

11:43 AM
I am always creating tags ;)
and with my experience on other sites I'd like to think I'm decently okay at identifying useful tags

Yeah, I would calm down a little bit. We don't need similar tags for nearly everything
Especially since we don't have volume\
In fact, we should be fixing a lot of tags...

I've been doing that.

Just try and not make it slant towards the "floss" movement. We're trying to change the scope and make the entire site neutral (there's a bunch of meta posts on that), so some of the things not might be wrong and mean nothing later
@Mnementh Can you come over here?

@Zizouz212 Heh, I thought 'FLOSS' would be the most neutral

Whatever, I don't care if people are here. Tag wiki suggesters: Don't lean your excerpts/wikis to one side of a movement/organization, and make sure that it's neutral. That being said, include both what it is really about, and when to use it. Tag Reviewers! Reject edits that make no sense, and aren't specific or neutral, or don't include what it is or when to use it. If they are short without including relevant information, then reject.
It doesn't matter if we don't have excerpts/wikis, if the tag wiki is not of quality, it shouldn't be there
Also, whoever made a whole bunch of other licensing tags... Errrrr
We only need a couple of em

11:55 AM
@Zizouz212 What would you advise for this tag? opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/fsf Neither question is about the organisation. There is also a free-software tag, but I think it's too broad and shouldn't be used
@Zizouz212 Which ones you mean?

They related to the tags themselves, and you don't have to ping me I'm here :) (And also, I get really mad when people ping me, that noise sounds terrible!)

@Zizouz212 Erm, I didn't saw this, just came in per coincidence. What do you want?

Then turn off your sound
"They related to the tags themselves" What do you mean?

WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST SAY!
sorry.
That scared the heck out of me
(I can get scared easily)

@Zizouz212 Where did you get such editing wisdom? None of your network profiles are very high rep.

11:58 AM
curiousdannii the problem with FLOSS is the final S for Software. That excludes non-software projects.
at least in theory

SO -> Don't bother, just review
And then I've done a bunch of other betas which kinda failed...
Otherwise, I'd have a ton more rep :)

@Martijn Good point!
Zizoouz You don't have the rep to review tag wiki edits on SO either...

SO's a dead site for me
It's all the other betas -> Gamification and so on

I won't claim to be a brilliant tag wiki editor, but I am a good tag maintainer.
So if you have specific advice I'll take it, but otherwise I'll continue as I was

With SO, i normally just review (but then that has slowed down as I've moved to other sites)
I guess I kind of gave advice to everyone, but I'll give you guys the link again:

12:01 PM
I approved a bunch of tag wiki edits and skipped a bunch by the way. Apparently, there may be some contention which ones are good :)

@Martijn Is there any other good common acronym? Should we borrow from Lessig and use Free Culture?

@cu
@curiousdannii afaik there is nothing that really fits
which is also a problem with the name of this site
we want to include the entire free and open shebang

@Martijn Remember that entire thing with site names and scope last night? I've finally figured out everything about it, so get ready for a bunch of meta posts in a little while

Free/Open Culture as the greatest common denominator seems reasonable
for some reason, whenever you think you've got it, someone will suddenly shout something you forgot you insensitive clod!
@Zizouz212 yay! Looking forward to it

12:05 PM
More suggested edits, but I have emptied my number of reviews for today...

Just writing some of them up now... I've got example questions, tags that we'll likely need and everything :D

@Zizouz212 I have to disagree with your retagging here: opensource.stackexchange.com/posts/221/revisions

It's that we don't want like 10 different tags related to licensing

It is most definitely not about public domain code! Copyright is a useless tag that should be burninated. And relicensing is useful.

I understand where you come from, but since we have no volume, it's not necessary. And I would read the question again...

12:06 PM
@Zizouz212 Why? Who says? Meta approved of license-compatibility for example.

It's not explicitly public domain, but it refers to it

speaking of tags by the way, for the CC license tags, would it make sense to just have CC-BY, CC-NC, CC-ND and CC-SA in addition to a global CC and CC-0?

@Zizouz212 YOU read the question again. The OP explicitly says that they know it currently has all-rights-reserved copyright. Public-domain is completely wrong!

a question about CC-BY-SA could then be tagged CC-BY and CC-SA

I know, all these tag versions are screwing me up...
@Martijn Issue is that, they refers to "different" licenses then

12:08 PM
@Martijn I'm not sure about this. We already have some of those tags, but it may be better to just stick to creative-commons

Unless we do a synonym like [cc-license]
To be honest, if it's made, let it be. Don't create additional tags.
Only thing is, we might have to change a lot of things depending on how the community sees my future meta posts
@curiousdannii I'll find you the link

CC-BY could refer to the attribution requirement in some CC licenses. CC-SA could refer to the share-alike requirement in some CC licenses.

17 hours ago, by Zizouz212
Part of site scope:

than tagging something CC-BY, CC-SA mean your question refers to those two clauses in CC licenses (likely in a CC-BY-SA license)

Just click the link...

12:10 PM
@Zizouz212 Based on the way you are single handedly reverting my work I'm not inclined to listen to how you tell me to use the site

Anyways, I'm heading to meta, don't ping me unless you absolutely have to

@Zizouz212 made it public != public domain

@Zizouz212 The question you tagged with public domain only says he made the project public, but without license. That is something different than public domain, I have to agree with curiousdannii.
Should Tag-Wiki-Excertpts end with '.' or not?

Oh hey
You only have 100-something characters, if you don't need the period, it's fine
People will look at tag wikis more often then the excerpt for the real info

12:23 PM
@Zizouz212 OK, thanks

no problem :)

Zizouz212 On this question opensource.stackexchange.com/posts/270/revisions I'd like to note that I thought it was appropriate to tag it relicensing because the OP wrote in a comment "But I'm talking about changing the license as the answers suggest."

The question itself has no mention of a license
There not trying to change the license, but rather remove ti

Zizouz is on a holy war against relicensing ;-)
To the weapons and choose your side wisely!

12:38 PM
It just doesn't make sense to me
We have 10 something license tags

0
Q: Is the relicensing tag useful?

curiousdanniiI think it would be useful to have the tag relicensing. Like we agreed for license-compatibility, I think it is better to have one tag like this than using two tags like license and license-change (which does exist and should probably eventually be made a synonym). Here are some questions I thin...

And since we don't have much volume, they should make most of them point to [licensing]
And thanks metadata...

The site volume thing is the only argument that makes even partial sense to me, but I don't think it's enough. We should be setting good examples by tagging well now. If the number of tags we can use is dependent on the number of questions in the site then we might as well replace all tags with either "license", "distribution" and "money"

@curiousdannii Agreed. Tags need to be allowed to grow before deciding whether to cull them. Unless there's a strong reason for killing a tag immediately (such as being misleading), we should just plant as many as possible and see what grows.

@Zizouz212 As I said as answer to another Meta-question, open source is defined by a license, a license is what making something open source. So it is natural that many questions have to do with licenses. Differentiating a bit, like relicense/license-change do should be done, as otherwise if everything is license the tag will forever dominate os.se. It is like a programming-tag would be to SO.

12:47 PM
I don't know, if the consensus is against me, then that's fine with me
I'm not running this, the community is :)

With tags it can sometimes help to ask "would someone follow this?"

But before we do anything, can we get more input from other people?

@curiousdannii: Thank you, your edit clears up the problem in understanding which 'free' I do mean.

More input is always a good answer :)

@trichoplax it also helps to ask "would new users add this tag"

12:49 PM
Okay, now let me write my super long meta post!

@trichoplax I agree. I still that there is some value in tags which no one would look up, because they help generate the related questions list. But such tags are worth giving more thought to because they may not be worth it.
Everyone, also remember that single use tags get deleted after a while. If a tag really isn't very useful we don't have to worry.

1:15 PM
@ArtOfCode writing meta posts can be tiring...
And hello there :)

Afternoon :)

Morning :)

So many suggested edits... So few reviews... @Zizouz212 get on it :)

I've done my 20...
There's been like 75 reviews already today...

Are we agreed which of licensing and license should be used?

1:18 PM
And only 45 of them were mine ;)

Wasn't that decided a while back? We chose [licensing] over [license] for general questions, and [license] for questions about a specific license.
CMs helped us with that...

@curiousdannii I was rejecting some that just re tagged license -> licensing because I don't know which we should be using. Ziz has just cleared that, so I'll be able to review those better tomorrow.

@Zizouz212 No, I think Rob meant that in specific questions you'd pick a tag like 'gpl' rather than 'licensing'. He said we don't need both tags.
@ArtOfCode That's fine. I really don't mind.

When referring to [license] and [licensing] Read the comment as well
> This subject space is better expressed as licensing. Question about a specific license might pick a narrower 'license' tag, but when folks are talking about licensing concepts in general, it wont be a good fit.

> You don't need both tags. You should have one tag and text completion will guide them to the right fit.

1:22 PM
@curiousdannii notably this edit - though I think reject was still correct on that one because it's about cc licenses so specific licenses.

I've just found opensource.com which provides resources like opensource.com/resources/what-open-source. What is this? Is it related to OSI?

A question to a specific license should use the [license] tag. General questions on licensing should use the [licensing] tag.

@Zizouz212 That is not what Rob meant. He clearly says that there should only be one tag!

> Question about a specific license might pick a narrower 'license' tag,
> but when folks are talking about licensing concepts in general, it wont be a good fit.
Thus using [licensing]

@Zizouz212 Read it in context!

1:25 PM
@curiousdannii I am...
@ArtOfCode your thoughts here?

Yes it was definitely a recommendation to use licensing only, and to not make license a synonym since the spelling is already similar enough for it to pick up the suggestion of licensing

text completion won't work if there are two tags, and if we kept both for different purposes people will constantly be using them wrong

However you read the ambiguous sentence, the two sentences after it make things clear what Robert means:
> You don't need both tags. You should have one tag and text completion will guide them to the right fit.

Have fun on meta everyone :)
bye

bye :)

1:27 PM
So suggesting burninating [license]?

Yes

I'll leave a comment, because it doesn't seem 100% clear

Does that mean they will transfer all the relevant questions for us, or should we edit?

@Zizouz212 (Just before I go) No, I think it should be a synonym of licensing. Despite what Rob says, there's really zero harm in synonyms. It can't hurt and it may occasionally help (if for some reason the text completion didn't work)

Synonym I can understand, each part seems to conflict however, and is just messing with me

1:29 PM
That was explicitly suggested and Robert said synonyms only make sense for unrelated words

The CMs probably won't burninate it yet. Mods will be appointed soon enough
@trichoplax His argument didn't make much sense to me. It's a useful technological feature, so why not use it?

CM's won't burninate it, but we can make a synonym of it

Zizouz212Alright! Day 6 into the beta, and we're about to introduce a new addition to the scope! The issue of neutrality has been big since the definition phase of this site. Haha!

@curiousdannii Maybe make an argument the other way and see if it gains community support?

Anything I missed in the post?

@trichoplax Eh I don't care too much. But on the sites I've frequented synonyms get made regardless of how similar the words are

1:30 PM
Just wait!

@Zizouz212 404...

What?

I know...
@curiousdannii Then you have a precedent to link to - that may help
The CMs also have experience over a wide range of sites though, so even if it wasn't expressed perfectly there may be a good reason underlying the decision

Just wait! I thought of something to add...

What happened to Tichodrama, why is the user inexistant now?

1:32 PM
Seems like he asked for the account to be deleted...
That's why it's user 38
or something like that

Strange, why would he do that.

He was an advocate for the fsf likely, he likely got frustrated with all the community and open source and site conditions
Probably that nothing was getting done, imo
Funny though, I gained 20 rep from himself being removed...

@Zizouz212 Maybe people who aren't impressed with the site now will return once we're established and have a more definite direction

I'm hoping...
Sorry, I missed a really important point in the post, so i've deleted it for the time being

Is anyone else getting 404 when clicking on @Zizouz212's meta post shown above?

1:36 PM
I deleted it :)

Oh that explains it :)

But when you first told me, i hadn't deleted it yet, so strange...

I thought maybe it was so controversial it had been auto-deleted ;)

@Zizouz212 yes that is very strange. Maybe being in different timezones means I see the effect of decisions you make before you make them. I'm UTC + 1

@Zizouz212 I hope my answer doesn't sound too negative - I do think it applies though. Hopefully someone will add an answer with the other side of things so we can see how the voting goes. The inability to change the web address is unlikely to be fixed by votes though.

@Zizouz212 Both answers take different sides and both get up- and downvotes. This is exciting, like a sports match between two equally strong teams.

I know... I'm just watching patiently getting both up and down votes :)
That's very strange...
Go to one of your posts and flag with a custom flag. That's not normal voting. Just be specific

@TrevorClarke I don't understand

He's got 8 down votes and an un-upvote
That's not normal voting behaviour
All in the span of an hour (I can't get more accurate than that)

Do the automated checks for serial downvoting run for private beta sites?
On a public beta or graduated site those votes would be reversed automatically after a while

2:45 PM
I'm not sure. If it doesn't get reversed after 8:00 tonight (toronto time) then raise the custom flag

Sounds sensible.

@trichoplax I'm not sure if it runs on private betas, but on public and graduated sites, the script to detect it runs once every night

That's good to know

Just be specific with the message in your flag, I raise a flag on that once - serial down voting - and (i think i was fairly specific) it got declined

@Zizouz212 The un-upvote was I, as I decided the close-reason was sound I took away the upvote. But I realized thats unfair, as only the edit gave me the possibility to do so, so I upvoted again. Don't know about the downvotes.

My god, that post I made was seriously controversial... And most people come to this site in the afternoon
+4/-2, +3/-3, +3/-1... Wow

@Zizouz212 @trichoplax I wonder if we're going to get a visit from community managers soon...

Hmm, I thought hitting the rep cap was over after I missed that the past two days, but it looks like today I will again hit the cap.

3:12 PM
I wonder...
@Mnementh I've started going below 100 rep a day...
@overactor Did the post look good?

@overactor It does suggest they are at least looking at us (unless a user here went through and edited every license question)

@trichoplax That user would likely be as @curiousdannii
He's the one who spammed our edit queues @ArtOfCode @Mnementh :)

@Zizouz212 Oh yeah - was just checking revision histories and I see you're right...

Yeah...
They were mostly tag excerpts, or retags
I rejected most of them...

As bad edits or too small?

3:20 PM
too small... I'll show you a few i rejected...
For the tag excerpt, I might've been a little harsh, but it was for good reason
I swear... Judging from the reviews subpage on my profile page, it looks like I'm a really negative person... :/

Q: Time to start cleaning house?

kdopenAt this point, 5 people are able to vote for deletion of closed questions and answers. Within a few days that number will be closer to ten. Only three votes are required to delete, but the more eyes the better. We currently have 46 closed questions. However, the notes at http://opensource.stack...

I can see why you rejected some of those - they were definitions of the word rather than directions on tag usage - that's a common mistake. It's a shame there isn't a feedback mechanism included when rejecting an edit - otherwise a potentially useful contributor may simply think their help is unwelcome

@trichoplax I agree on the feedback mechanism.

You can give custom feedback, but I normally don't, since the main points are there
I'll find one where I gave a custom reason...
You can see my custom reason

@Zizouz212 I'd never realised that was an option - I'll bear that in mind when reviewing

3:35 PM
You don't have that many characters, but at least you have the option :)

@Zizouz212 I count 2 of those where I rejected for the same reason. I've got a number of rejects on my count too, both here and on other places I can review edits, so no worries there

Yeah :D

Does that custom reason show up as a notification for the person who made the original edit?

I don't think so. It's just like a custom close reason I think. If they want to see it, then they will, but there isn't normally notifications for those things I'm quite sure
Also, @ArtOfCode Did you see my meta post? Any thoughts?

@Zizouz212 I've just got in, but yes I have. I think it's a good reflection on what this site should be, and IMO isn't actually that far off our current scope - it's just some additions.

3:41 PM
Okay good :) There's so much mixed voting there...

It's a pretty controversial post...
My upvotes went to the question and the first (Mnementh's) answer

Current vote counts: +6/-2 for question, +4/-2 for @Mnementh, and +3/-4 for @trichoplax Very interesting...

Ummm... why did you delete the original?

Oh - you didn't just delete and then undelete after editing - you posted a whole new question post?

Apparently, you can't edit when something is deleted, so I just copy pasted into a separate question and added what I needed

3:48 PM
I've always been able to edit my own deleted posts in the past, just not other people's

That's weird... It wouldn't let me edit...
Oh well

Occasionally mods delete something and say "if you edit this to remove the problem you can request it be undeleted"

@Zizouz212 I can edit it, so you should be able to as well.

You can?
Let me try again...

maybe rep related?

I'm joking :)

Oh
@ratchetfreak But you should be able to edit your own posts, should you not?
And apparently the @ArtOfCode jokester can edit it...

Allow me to prove it.

@HDE226868 You going to college?

@Zizouz212 Oh, not next year. I'm going into senior year.
But yes. Eventually.

Grade 12?

Yep.

4:17 PM
Okay. I'm in 11 :)
Well, going to 11

Have fun with standardized tests.

@HDE226868 You're in 12, or going to 12?

@ArtOfCode Going to 12.

But I'm in Canada :D

Thought so. That makes me the old one still

4:19 PM
@ArtOfCode I highly doubt you'Re older than me.

@Mnementh Of the three of us, I mean :)

To All: I highly doubt you're younger than me :)

Regardless, school is out for everyone, yes?

Yep :D

Nope
You lot finish early
I have 2-3 weeks to go

4:30 PM
Oof.

Meh. Do you start late though?

We start early September... is that late?

That's when I start. ~ September 4.

I don't know, I finish late june, start early september.
I get march and winter breaks...
Do you get an extra break?

We get half-term breaks too
One week in October, two over Christmas, one in February, two late March/early April, one early June, 6 over the summer

4:40 PM
I get two weeks in winter, one week march
and then holidays and pa days about once a month

Ouch
So we just get far more holiday than you over the year

I'm just nervous for next year though. We've had teacher strikes for like four years...

Teacher strikes of what variety?

Our teachers haven't had a contract in about two years, but there have been no strikes. Large student demonstrations, yes. No strikes, though.

Work to rule, and stuff No activities, demonstrations, this year elementary students got letters from their principal telling them they passed instead of report cards from teachers

4:46 PM
Fun. Our teachers seem pretty content

Here, we have either really awesome teachers, or really crummy teachers (and the crummy ones are normally the young ones)

Everything settled in the OpenInfo-question on Meta? No new votes? Has really everyone seen this? Probably it should be featured or something, especially since it is so controversial.

Q: Make the site about Open Information!

Zizouz212Note: I understand this is very long, but be sure to read and understanding everything in this post. Alright! Day 6 into the beta, and we're about to introduce a new addition to the scope! The issue of neutrality has been big since the definition phase of this site. Conflicts and arguments over...

@Mnementh I've flagged it and asked for it to be featured

Thanks, I think everyone should have the chance to see it and react to it, especially if it seemingly is controversial.

6:53 PM
@ArtOfCode Thanks. Hopefully that will raise some attention big time :)

@Zizouz212 jump over to the dev room
