How do you deal with this post? android.stackexchange.com/questions/37842/…
The Original Poster made a follow-up (which is quite long) as an Answer.

@ShyGuy Looks like that should be edited into the Question as an Update? He's a new user, and new people often think this works like a discussion forum where you put new posts and info in a post below the last person

@GAThrawn All right. Let me flag that post.

@ShyGuy And approving your edit puts me just 6 Edit Approvals from the Reviewer badge!

11:24 AM
:) I still have 100+ First Post approvals to do before I overtake ce4. :D
@Izzy What are you writing about?

@ShyGuy Hah, didn't realise people under 5k had been given access to the review queues now, wonder when that was changed. I'm going to go and do some reviewing on some of the other sites now!

I'll stay here. One place is enough. :D

@ShyGuy And if you're trawling the First Post review queues that explains why you've always got a full set of edits in the queue when I log in every morning!

11:42 AM
That, or we're in different timezones. :)

@ShyGuy Android, of course
But in German language.

Is it a programming book?

Nope. All from a user's standpoint.
The one going into its 3rd round now is (translated title) "The inofficial Android guide"

Unofficial

The other one (just printed a quarter ago) is "The inofficial guide to the Android system"
Whatever -- in German it's "inoffiziell" :D

11:46 AM
Nice. You must be making good money.

And according to Linguee both terms (inofficial and unofficial) are synonyms :D
What? Money?
Where?

From the book. You're selling it, right?

You've never been publishing technical books, have you?

No, never.

I'm the author. Publishing is done by, huh, the publisher.
Let's say a book is sold for 10 bucks. What do you think where that money goes?

11:48 AM
The publisher and you.
How many percent does the publisher take?

50% goes to the sales companies (Amazon, book stores, shipping & handling)
The remaining 50% go to the publisher -- who gives the author about 10%.
Which means: I get 50 cent per book sold.

Wow. @_@

Calculate the time spent, this comes up to maybe 2..5 bucks per hour.
If you're lucky.
Per edition, there are about 2.000 books printed (remember, this is not fiction -- so the readers are limited).

So, why do you write these books if it doesn't make a lot of money in the first place?

My books go for 25..30 Euro each. About one edition per year. Make your calculation :-/
Fame and glory :D

11:52 AM
That's a good point. :)

Some day it will pay off, I hope. One example: I bought a new tabby. Got probs with it. Everybody else now may have trouble with the support.

You should've applied as moderator. That's a quick way to have a bit of fame.

I just contact them, tell them who I am, and get 3 tabs in return -- all of them pre-rooted LOL
And a new deal, if the tab producer decides to sell my book ROFL
Yeah, I thought about applying. Was hard on the border to do that. I was just afraid I'd be elected then XD

Nice. I hope you sell lots of books.

So do I. And another side effect: People (here: the ones who build and sell the hardware) are more likely to listen to you. So I may influence the "factory customizing"

11:55 AM
Why would you be afraid? You know a lot about the topic, and you do a lot of moderating as well.
You have the skills to be a mod.

To bring in points users like to have (as apposed to those the producer thinks may be fine).

Right. They ought to have a community, where they listen to the users.

What would you say if there was a device with special software features, like e.g. offering Dalvik cache wipe from the stock recovery?
Well, they do listen to their community. But how far do they trust the opinion of a standard user -- and how much weight does the opinion of someone who actually published on the topic have?

But I suppose there are reasons why they do not do that. Bottomline: More money for companies if they keep making new models, but without all the features.

All a question of arguments. Taking my example: If a user can do a Dalvik wipe, there come situations where they don't need to do a factory reset (and losing their data). so it's a) more user-friendly, and b) less likely returns for service.
Plus: They can offer something users want -- and nobody else offers!
Which means: users may tend more to decide for their product when considering a purchase.

11:59 AM
Good points there.

Yupp -- the manufacturer said the same :)
They're currently evaluating my suggestions. I'm very curious of the results -- how much they will take, and what I'll see with the next updates. I also offered them to test new devices/versions -- which is what I get the additional devices for.
The Dalvik wipe was just a single example -- they've got a longer list from me :D

Nice. You've got it going for you. :) Make sure to advertise what the tablet is. Maybe I'll go check it out.
Why don't you sell it as an ebook too? You'd probably make more money that way.

Shall I rather wait until we see the outcome of the current changes? Including myself having tested a few more devices? The company has more than one model on sale (different sizes, different configurations, etc.)
Yeah, good idea. I get more money from my eBooks on Amazon currently -- they sell better than the eBooks of my publisher LOL
(no kidding -- that's a fact. I have my eBooks on Amazon for more than a year now)

2 hours later…
1:54 PM
@Izzy Hi Izzy...
Man, You're always here?
Hi all ;-)

2:11 PM
@CrazyBuddy mostly, yes. At least logged-in -- though not necessarily having the chat in front of my nose 24/7 :) But this way I notice when something's going on.
@CrazyBuddy And: Re-Hi \0_

BTW, The "ebook reader" was very much helpful...
Maybe I could kill you by asking some android recommendations ;-)
@Izzy I have bought a galaxy Y..! (last month)
nearly 20 days, I think so...
The first time I've been into this android "thing"...
It looks wonderful... - but I have several expectations...
I've rooted it already...
@Izzy And, Whats the use of "TTS"..?
Text-to-speech..?
Do we need it to make our phone read..?
How does it actually work?
Hmmm... - Busy..?
Okay - we'll chat later Izzy ;-)

3:03 PM
Yepp, TTS = TextToSpeech.
And yes, it is used by a lot of apps for speech output: Reading your SMS to you, reading books (Moon+ can do that -- though I hate that for books, it's no fun :D
@CrazyBuddy And yes: As I said, I'm not permanently looking at the chat -- but I see when something happens, and, if time permits, check it :D

Okay, Got it :-)
So, I think I don't want this TTS "thing" :P

I use it only in one app: AlarmDroid. There it makes sense to me: "Good morning, Izzy! Time is 7:15. Weather: cloudy, some snow. Temperature: 2 degrees, maximum of 5 degrees expected. Have a nice day!"

@Izzy Amazing..! LOL :D

Yeah. Just missing: "Thank you, James -- and now: SHUT UP!" :D
There are alarm clocks you can tell to shut up -- but they do not welcome you to the morning as AlarmDroid does...

I'll check that too...
With this chatting stuff itself, I'll become an android expert soon :D

3:22 PM
I'd recommend you one of my books -- but that would require you to understand German :D

Hey.,.. - I'm not good even in English :-)
But, I'll give it a try... What is it?
Any translations avail. for that book?

Not that I know of. There are a couple of prints available at Amazon, also Kindle eBooks for sale -- and I offer some of them under CreativeCommons for free download on my book server.
But all in German. I could write them in English as well -- but I lack the time...

Hmm... I see ;-)

URL for my book server is somewhere in the starred list (at the right-hand side of the chat, if you click on "show all 106" :)
What is your native language, btw?

Mine..? - I think you wouldn't have heard any of such... - TAMIL
But, I prefer English - these days...

3:33 PM
Ah, Tamil -- I see. I just remember having been asked for Tamil support on one of my projects, years ago -- cannot remember how this ended up...

Das Android Pl tiden buch ..?
What are these..?
So, the whole page - did you write everything?
Awesome..! :-)
Still, I can't read though
I browsed for TTS...
Looks like most sites tell about something called IVONA

@CrazyBuddy Yeah, that's the first one. The second is less popular, as it specializes on travel stuff ("Mit Android auf Reisen"). The 3rd book again is a more popular one, "Android Toolbox" -- that's the corresponding one to the "system guide" which was just printed a quarter ago.
And yes, I wrote the books (where my name is on), and I wrote the book server software (so it suites my needs -- and when I need something, I can just add it). I just didn't write the web server (apache) and OS (Linux) :D
Ah, IVONA. That's just one virtual assistant AFAIK (like Siri on iOS).

@Izzy If you find any sort of books (like that), ping me. I'll be around here mostly during nights like these...

3:48 PM
Ooops -- sorry, correction: That was Iris. Ivona is indeed a TTS itself.
@CrazyBuddy I have no time to search for them, sorry ;)

@Izzy Whaaa....

As for TTS: Android comes with a TTS pre-installed.

I didn't tell you to search... Sorry (That's why I frequently say "I'm bad in English")

Well, hang around here in chat, you will learn a lot. New questions are announced here -- so whenever something interesting comes in, check it.

Yeah... I'd better...

3:51 PM
And you can check my questions (at my profile) -- I only asked all of them for educational purposes, so this might prove interesting to you as well: hard facts for everybody to use.

13k user..? - I think I'll have to learn many things :P

@CrazyBuddy Don't worry -- I was just playing with the words. I took it you meant "when you stumble upon books like that..."
Yeah -- took me 6 month to get there. Air gets thin up there XD
Currently #7 all time, I am :D
Oops -- spoiler to the left...
15.9k on all SE sites summed up together :D

Good luck... Keep it up man :D

I try. I like SE, the principle it works, the folks around here. Learned a lot by answering the questions even, and of course by answers (and corrections to mine) of my fellows here.
It's a great site, really recommendable!

same here - well, I started in a different path - PHYSICS...
When I bought the phone, I joined Android...
I don't answer or ask any b'coz most of the posts already here satisfies me much :D
I'm barely a 0.1 k user to vote on posts :P

4:09 PM
Everybody starts with either 1 or 101 rep here (the latter when coming from a sister-site where he already had 200+ rep).

@Izzy Hey, I know that...
I told - I'll be maintaining this...
I just came to interact, vote and share something ;-)

So even if late -- be welcome here, brother :D

Thanks again Izzy :-)
I'll visit the chat everyday (If I'm not on the main) - BTW, I'll check your posts too :D
Gd n8 ;-)
Oops... Is the GMT OK?
Night for you..?

4:33 PM
@CrazyBuddy it's GMT+1 here -- so rather "late afternoon" (5:30pm). But if it's already night for you: Good n8 for you, and we see each other around!
Who flew in there? Ah, hi @Flow :)
Always a nice animation when people join/leave chat :D

Well, I didn't actually flew out... Connection blew off for a while...
I'm so unlucky that I'm using a dialup..!

@CrazyBuddy oops...

Hi @Izzy, sorry was busy posting an answer.

@Flow Oh... A new guy..? - Hi Flow..!

Hi @CrazyBuddy

4:47 PM
Sorry, an old guy :P

@LiamW Fighting for rep again, huh? :) Nothing personal (and don't take it as an attack on you, mind you!) -- but my answer on Why is rooting required for a custom ROM IS technically correct. So please, before stating something like its being incorrect, do some research -- will you?
@LiamW I can recommend you some good readings ;)
@Flow Never mind, I know exactly what you mean :)
Just was busy myself (see my requests at Liam). Would you mind cross-checking what he might mean by "technically incorrect"?
I know he sometimes gets annoyed when it comes to rep going away from him (no offense meant) -- but well, if he asks I better read my answer a second time :)

5:04 PM
@Izzy It is wrong. You don't need root to flash a boot.img, system.img or recovery.img if you have fastboot, you just flash them with fastboot, then flash the custom ROM (which will end up being rooted anyway).

@LiamW I will verify that again to make sure (I never used fastboot myself, so I will not claim all the wisdom to me). But as I wrote: All the devices I had access to would not let me flash any custom stuff unless I rooted first. And I checked a lot.

@Izzy If the device has fastboot (and granted not all do) then you don't need root - just an unlocked fastboot.

But granted, my list of devices might be as limited as yours -- and it well might be we have no device in common. Only thing I know is what you wrote is 100% true for Samsung devices. I never had a Samsung phone/tablet, so I could not even arguing about those.
So we're back with the chicken and egg, if the device has not 4.x installed? You need root to make a full backup, as unlock will make a wipe?

Listen: Here is how to install a custom rom without rooting on a fastboot enabled devive: Unlock bootloader. Use fastboot to flash recovery. Use recovery to flash custom ROM.
You could also use recovery to backup ;)

Very funny. My recovery does not list any backup option.

5:11 PM
And then use Titanium to extract the nandroid data on the custom ROM which will be rooted.

You are already too used to CWM :)

@Izzy The custom recovery you just flashed using fastboot.
@Izzy I use either TW or CWM (I used to use RZ as well)

Oh great -- you mean after I unlocked and lost all my data, I can do a backup of... what?
2

Oh.... DAMN
Shut up.

LOL
Umm... What is RZ?
I know CWM (using it myself), and I've heard/read about TW. But RZ?

5:13 PM
@Izzy RaidZero Recovery. I used it on my LG GT540.

Just before I'll be afk: I think Liam is right. You don't need root in every case to flash a different ROM. It's just very common that you need root.

@LiamW DO NOT BE ANGRY! I'm in no way intend to attack you. I'm just asking. As I wrote before: It might very well we are both right, or we are both missing some point. So we can learn from each other -- as I do just now, learning from you about RZ. Good hint: RaidZero. Need to note this to check it out -- THANKS!

I like your stance Izzy :)

So, just starred it, so I can find it when I'm back home :D

@Izzy Only my second starred post in chat :(

5:16 PM
@Flow Thanks! But hell, it's true. We are not here for fighting, but for learning.
I mean, I wrote 3 books now on Android. And every day here on ASE I still learn something new. And quite a couple of times from Liam :)

@LiamW Do maths -- 3 stars now :D

@Izzy Hmmm. Sorry then :( P.S what type of books?

Books on Android.
For users.
(i.e. not for devs)

e-books, published books is what I mean ;)

5:18 PM
One for beginners, one for, hmm, geeks?
Yes
Ahem, both
3 eBooks, 2 printed, 1 translation (Android Forensics).
From the 2 printed, the first goes for its 3rd edition in spring.
Which means: 3 editions in less than 18 months :D

What language are these in?

And something more on the horizont (scroll up a few pages to my chat with Crazy if you're curious).
My books are in German -- I lack the time to keep them up-to-date in multiple languages, or I would have done so (English wouldn't be the big problem I guess).

Unless you're using Google Translate every time you post, English shouldn't be an issue :P

LOL Thanks -- am I really that bad with English that it looks like Google Translate?
kidding ^^
Maybe translating to English doesn't look that strange as the other way round. Translating from English to German with GTrans is just... well... I miss the words...
For someone not capable of English, it's helpful XD

@Izzy That post was actually a compliment :P

5:28 PM
@LiamW Yeah -- got that, that was what the "Thanks" was for :) I just couldn't resist the joke.
As I see, German->English works pretty well actually. Except when... Here comes an example:
> The tools I will, however, be mentioned here. I must admit, that I might be a little in terms of data protection'm paranoid.
Ouch. The original was more like:

That makes no sense...
(The quote)
Something really strange just happened on my nexus.

> The tools I will, however, mention here. I must admit that in terms of data protection I'm a little paranoid.

I had to restart adbd with the terminal emulator app to make USB debugging work :/

Yepp, that's what I meant :) But at least one get's a raw idea.

HI @MatthewRead, are you lurking for a reason?

5:30 PM
Ooops? Never had to do that.
@LiamW OK, as promised, I will re-check the fastboot issue. Now I have to hurry home (I'm still in the office).

lol ;)

Yeah... So a good evening to all of you, will be back latest tomorrow (if I don't make it to my computer today ;)

checking out some drama. @LiamW you need to keep it calm and polite in comments

@MatthewRead Sometimes that is not possible.

@MatthewRead We two had a little trouble with each other before. But we always made peace. And then went to the cleanup-party <- @LiamW that part we almost forgot about this time! =:-0

5:38 PM
@LiamW It is and it's required. Fair warning.

@LiamW Let's check for the comments, maybe we should remove some of them again?

I cleaned a bunch of them up

Looks like mine already got deleted.
@MatthewRead Please don't talk to me like that, but understood.

@LiamW I APOLOGIZE! And correct: I forgot, you remembered ;)
OK, 2nd parse, if I need to remove some of mine. Didn't look like that at a first glance -- but I'm no Saint either XD
Looks fine -- OK.
@LiamW You should know by now that I'm not attacking you, or eating your rep, or whatever. As Matthew wrote, there must be a way to "keep the ball low". If I can help somehow, let me know!
OK, but now I really have to leave the office -- before they lock me in =:-0
See you l8er!

1 hour later…
7:00 PM
@LiamW I just saw the old (probably not dead) transcripts...
Happy B'day Liam :P
It was on Monday. Isn't it?

Yup :)
(Wasn't it)

7:18 PM
@LiamW Want to check my updated answer on WHY? :) Really looks like a compromise. The point we got it wrong is interpreting the question: "Why is it required" to me implicates "there is something where it is required" -- so my pre-text was: "If it is required, these are the reasons".
There ARE devices where it is required (e.g. Iconia A100) -- so my answer is correct.
There ARE devices where root is not required -- so your answer is true as well.
For those devices where root is not required, my answer is still correct, as ex falso quodlibet sequitur -- "from false can follow anything" :)
@LiamW Is this satisfying to you -- or need I to dig deeper? ;)

@Izzy Yeah...

Yes?

@Izzy Who downvoted your answer? It was never me, I only just voted and it was up.

@LiamW our common problem that some downvoters never give reason. My assumption was a "mistaken newcomer", who thought he need to remove his upvote from my answer to put it on yours (I never assumed it was you!)
But hey, it earned me 63 rep -- f**k the two from the downvote :D

62. Hyperventilating initiated

7:26 PM
LOL!
Btw: I upvoted your answer as well
Would make no sense to take the goods of it via an indirect quote into mine otherwise ;)
And yes, I also suggested that downvote should require a comment... At least from everybody below 10k (until one reached 10k one knows to do so, so no force needed anymore ;)

Yay, only 5,555 needed for 10K!

A good number -- congrats!
I had to cough today to not laugh out aloud. At work, somebody assigned me ticket #16575
16575! LOL!

Dont get it :(

(if you now look as confused as my collegue did when he saw my face: check my ID at ASE :)
[user:16575]

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

7:35 PM
EXACTLY! :D
My first idea was: Um, I got caught... XD

P.S Where do you work?
Yeah, going on ASE at work ;)

I'm freelance, so I work at different places.

Ah :) My user number is a lot lower than yours...

And yes, in my breaks I frequently check ASE (always open in some browser tab)
Yeah, you're around here much longer.

wonders when the ell beta will start for some reason

7:37 PM
ell?

Ah, that one -- I knew it must be somthing SE related. Just was not sure which one -- messed up with t0mm13b's newcomer. Sure, you've been talking about that one before! /me is crossing fingers for Liam
@LiamW I'm very curious for the re-phrasing of that "which device" question. I doubt he can rephrase it in a way it becomes on-topic -- no idea how that could be achieved.

@Izzy Was thinking the same...
wonders who upvoted that question
@Izzy Thats quite good wording actually ;)
(The edit to the q)

Thanks! Which one? (I edited some today)
Btw: See my comment -- he didn't make it. I gave him a hint :)

8:01 PM
Wow -- made it! :D

2 hours later…
10:02 PM
What is needed to use a USB gamepad on Android?

Q: When asking a question, enforce user to read the FAQ first

t0mm13bIs it possible, that when asking a question, a kind of a check to say something like Tick here, and Yes, I have read the FAQ and acknowledge that the question fits the criteria in order to enforce the user to read the darn thing prior to posting. All too often OPs are not actually reading the...

Well, I did read the FAQ, but it was a while ago. Have I said something wrong?

@ruda.almeida LOL co-incidence, I'd say -- that was the bot announcing an article from meta, not an answer to your question :D

@Izzy I noticed that, but it seems I can't edit that message. Strangely, I can edit this one.

Now you cannot anymore, I bet?
Ooops -- wrong... I assumed you can only edit it while it's the last...
But it looks more like with comments, you can only edit them for 5min

10:18 PM
Apparently not, my last one was posted 2min ago and I can't edit it now

Hm, even shorter interval then. Need to set a timer.
Cannot edit mine from 3min ago either.

I had the impression chat messages could be edited by anyone, just like Q&A's

12s -- OK ... 27s -- OK ... 41s -- OK ... 50s -- OK ... 1min -- OK ... OK ... 2min -- OK ... Gone.

But that would have funny implications

OK, so the limit is around 2min obviously.

10:22 PM
OK, enough of metachatting
;-P

Right :D

10:52 PM
Hey all, random question, ridiculously specific; do you guys know of any apps that would let my phone act as a keyboard over USB at boot?
I know there are a half dozen that run as services/in-OS-applications; basically I am looking for one that emulates hardware

Q: Time limit for editing chat

ruda.almeidaI have noticed that sometimes I can edit my own messages on chat, but when I view older messages I can't edit them. Is there some sort of time-limit for editing your own message? How long is this limit?
