9:38 AM
@Izzy What do you think, possible undeletion candidate: android.stackexchange.com/questions/21357 ?

10:13 AM
@Flow On a first glance I'd say No (we're dealing with Android questions from a user's standpoint -- not with iOS questions on Android hardware).

@Flow That q has been deleted, so how can you see it?

Well it's about Android hardware. Maybe we need to specify if we don't want to handle questions about non-Android software on Android hardware. But I see no gain in keeping this question deleted. Closed as off-topic ok, but not deleted. I like the answers (and this is not because my answer got so many upvotes) just because the first answers says that it isn't possible because of the closed nature of iOS and the second answers points to a nice iOS skin/theme for Android.
@LiamW 10k users can see deleted posts

@Flow Thats a bit unfair...

10:30 AM
Why so? It's more of a burden then an advantage if you ask me (because there is no way to filter out deleted questions)

@Flow It's the deleted answers that annoy me, they're so often rubbish like spam, or "me too" and they just clutter up a good question

10:55 AM
@Flow So you see everything, including deleted things? Still shouldn't be allowed...

Why? The deletion and undeletion process is an integral part of how SE works

@LiamW That's desired and needed for maintenance.

I was actually referring to the fairness part...

@Flow You have your point. That's why I wrote "at a first glance". Unfortunately I currently lack the time for deeper investigation (lots of things to do, I'm at work)

@LiamW Do you think access to the deleted questions gives you an advantage?

11:11 AM
They are deleted for a reason. One reason is to keep the site clean, so "normal users" should not be bothered by things not belonging here. As Flow said before: Once you get to see this stuff, you wish you had a filter to keep it out of view...

11:40 AM
@Flow if you feel sorry for the answers, why not create a new question "Is it possible to make an Android device look like an iPhone?", and then merge in the good ones? :D

3 hours later…
2:24 PM
Any idea when the site will be back up?

2:54 PM
Ok, it's back up

Q: Need to disambiguate "folders"

Al EverettI direct your attention to the folders tag. It's being used for questions on: folders on the SD card/in the filesystem (you know, what we used to call "directories" until Microsoft brainwashed us) folders on the home screen that can hold multiple app icons email folders file folders become alb...

2 hours later…
5:06 PM
Anyone lurking?
@Flow Ignore me, just being silly as usual.
@Flow I think that it could be useful, but I also agree that people should earn the right to see them. I just think 10K is a bit much - mainly because I'm getting there nowhere soon.

@LiamW it's the same across all sites, stackoverflow included
if I remember right, it's actually a lower amount when a site is in it's beta/infancy but that's been awhile so I don't quite remember

@BryanDenny Still think it is quite high. How many users do we have with ≥ 10000 rep?
@BryanDenny And it is smaller for beta sites
@BryanDenny And I think each site should be able to have individual privilege levels

@BryanDenny It was definitely lower in beta, I remember gaining mod tools at one point during our beta, and then losing them for a long time when we came out of beta

@GAThrawn @BryanDenny I have seen GA's meta post about those mod tools multiple times, so I know they are smaller on beta sites.

@LiamW they probably should scale, but that would be a discussion for meta.SO

5:19 PM
Yeah... I only have 101 rep on meta.SO so I kinda don't go there...

Q: Sliding scale for rep abilities for new StackExchange sites

Lance RobertsThere are questions that need editing on Web Applications, as with any other SO/SE site, but most of us start too low to do much about it. Could we have some relaxed rep requirements in the Beta phase of the site, maybe a sliding scale based on site-rep-average or time?

5:55 PM
@LiamW it's where those kind of requests go since it affects more than just android.SE

6:48 PM
I seem to be lacking in the gaining of rep :/ I want to be able to VTC!

7:00 PM
@LiamW You will be able to vc with 3k rep, which you will get pretty soon. Look at me: It took me 2 years to get to 11k... IMHO being an active user over an extended period of time matters more then just having rep

@Flow Not by my reasoning, as people wouldn't think you're an active user and may not trust you if you do not have much rep, or they may but they may think they must not be very good at answering/asking questions.

7:34 PM
@LiamW I personally don't go by rep alone to judge a "poster". There are some members who are around here for much longer than me, but I do not happen to encounter their posts often. But when I do, I find them very valuable. So writing style and quality of questions/answers count much more to me.

Hmmm. New users might @Izzy

One who joined up about the same time as me, but has "only" about half as much rep. His answers I recognize immediately in most cases: very well phrased, very good formatted, thoroughly researched -- always woth a +1 if not even a "special bounty".

And a special bounty is...

I already recommended you taking a look at those postings, all of us can learn a lot of Zuul :)
Special bounty: If you feel an answer is worth an extra award, you can add a bounty for that.

So you add a bounty, for the purpose of giving a user that answered some more rep? Or is it a different option ;)

7:39 PM
Just check by clicking the "add a bounty" link on some question (don't worry, nothing happens until you explicitly approve it).
Just a minute, something's calling my attention -- being back soon...

Hmm. Nothing about special bounties on the start a bounty link, and I am scared to click the next button in case it takes away my rep
Hello @morlix

There are many reasons why you can add a bounty to a question -- your own question, or any other question as well.
One is what I just explained.

Hmmm ok.

hello

Then you can add it if you feel it didn't get enough attention (you know, for those who run after rep, a bounty is quite interesting to get ;)

7:42 PM
@morlix Hi - anything you want in particular?

Another reason would be if you require a specific/canocical answer to some special problem.

@Izzy Thats true - I always try to get bounties ;)
I only ever got 2 - +200 from @MatthewRead and +50 from someone

That's what I e.g. did with my question Full Backup of non-rooted devices
I wanted a generic/canocial answer which is useful to as many users as possible.

no i just started using stackoverflow and now i look through everything i can find to check it out :-)

@morlix Okay dokay :)
@Izzy 100 rep is too much to me ;)

7:44 PM
Another day I found a very interesting question from another user, which hung there for weeks without an answer -- so I added a bounty. Answer came quite promptly then :)

I would never give it away.

@LiamW Minimum to spend is 50, not 100 :)

I have only ever started 1 bounty - a +50 one.
I know ;)
@Flow how is the new moderator position?
(he might come on...)

The amount of rep you put into a bounty depends on multiple factors.
If you think it's easy to answer, and was just going unnoticed: 50 is fine.

bye... i go and try to answer some questions...

7:46 PM
Why would someone want to go the max?
+500!
I wouldn't mind one of them ;)

If it is a really difficult thing and would need a lot of research, and might be a bit longer, 50 won't be enough :)
And if you really, really and very urgently need such an answer... you might feel it's even worth the 500 :)

I would only start giving bounties if I have more than 10600 rep :)
I don't like the fact that you lose privileges by giving bounties :(

Not sure if it's possible to add a second bounty after the first has expired -- I never tried. That way one might try with a lower rep, and increase if necessary...
If you don't, it wasn't that important to you.

@Izzy Hmm. That didn't make sense...

Why? If you feel such an urgent need for something, you'd be willing to pay for.

7:50 PM
True.

Did you know that you also lose some rep when you downvote some question?

Although I don't know why anyone would need such an urgent answer to a question

That hit me a bit first, and seemed to make no sense. But it should prevent "trolling" and the like -- with that in mind, it makes sense.

@Izzy Only answers, and yes I do. I always try to avoid downvoting answers ;)

Plus, if the downvoted post gets deleted, you get your rep back :)
Welcome -- I also rarely downvote. But sometimes it's needed.

7:51 PM
@Izzy True. I deleted an answer with 3 downvotes... I got a badge for it (and I bet the people were happy to get their 1 rep back)
What can 10k rep users do?
Full details, the privileges page is a bit brief...

Ah, so you did collect the "peer pressure" already LOL
I didn't think you could wait for the 3rd downvote XD

@Izzy This is when I was quite new obviously...
I wouldn't let that happen anymore ;)

So what can a 10k+ member do? The same what a 5k+ can do, plus some more:
- see flags (and act on them, i.e. "weighting" them by adding/substracting force by agreeing/disagreeing, thus making it easier for mods to see those flags which need most attention). Not that we have that many -- I rarely happen to see one :)

What in the name of sleighs....

- vote to (un)delete closed questions

8:00 PM
Am I going mental or did a sleigh just come across the screen?

- see a bunch of stats
@LiamW, you've got hallu... oops. Probably someone just left the chat -- in that case his avatar "drops out"

@Izzy Thats good, I thought I was losing it ;)

- see which questions are currently having any v-c attached (and add your vote, if necessary)

@Izzy Which stats?

Naaah, don't worry. But when that happened to me the first time, I was a bit puzzled, too :)
Which stats? OMG. No, that gets too long to list up here :)

8:03 PM
Well, I would've thought a screenshot would do ;)

Yeah, guess so. Might even be some on Meta.

Or should I just wait until I get to 10k? Even though that is probably going to take ages...

Well, things like highest/lowest voted Qs and As. Most active, most edited, etc.
Liam, did you check my profile? How long do you think I'm around here?

I have looked at you profile multiple times, but you currently have chat linked to your super user profile, so to get to it atm I would have to look around loads of links...
5 months. 5 months...
:(

I have what? Never noticed... Yepp. What does that tell you?

8:07 PM
You've been here less time than me, and have more than 2x the rep than me?!?!?!?!?!
YOU CHEATED

It does not necessarily "take ages", right? :D

Why have I been here almost a year, and only have 2.5k rep then?

Cheated? If giving good answers and asking good questions (again, see my profile) is cheating: Yepp, in that case I cheated. XD

about 1000 rep a month = 8 months until I get to 10k
I cant wait that long :(
My answers are good, people just cant see thier merit
Like this one: It took me 5-10 minutes to compost that! android.stackexchange.com/questions/35174/…
I just got some serious DeJa-Vu

@LiamW Mods can refund bounties if needed. Not that I am encouraging you to mess with them :P The button says "Next" until the last page, where it says "Start Bounty", so you don't have to worry about it posting without confirmation

8:17 PM
I see, thanks Matthew :)

8:30 PM
np

What is the easiest way to get a gold badge?

@BryanDenny Apart from that... (I am trying to do that now, but it's going to take me another 80 odd days)
'and 25% of total votes are on questions' hmm

just remember there is a vote cap per day

And it is?
my browser keeps on caching the review page and I have to hard refresh to get new counts :(

8:39 PM
25?
I think

@LiamW sorry, was afk. 5 minutes spent for an answer is not that much (good for "shorties"). Admitted, for many of mine I also spent around 5..10min. For at least as many it rather takes 20+ minutes. And some even required an hour or more...

An hour to compose an answer?!?!? I don't have that much time!

40 votes a day
I believe

I just want to point out that all of this is making me feel worse for some reason...

Liam, I wrote some required that much. And look what they brought back: Valuable content (see my questions, I asked only 4 -- but they also took me at least half an hour to setup for each), plus rep.
One Q even earned me the badge for a "good question" (25+ upvotes).

8:48 PM
I just want to know how an answer can take an hour or more, and be worth it...

Just depends on what it is you are writing

I don't need to ask questions though - I know most things already :(

Some of my wiki-like q/as from a long time ago took a while to write for sure

Then check out Zuul's answers. Or some of mine. "worth" means more than just rep -- don't forget, the reason for this site is not "building rep" -- that's just a means to reach the real goal: Building up knowledge, help each other.
Good point, @BryanDenny! @LiamW: And one gets NO REP AT ALL for those community wikis!

@Izzy That is true, and that is true for all communites. I suppose I just lost heart when I got banned from the giffgaff community...
@Izzy Well, you do get +2 rep sometimes ;)

8:52 PM
I don't know about that...
Heh? You mean 2 upvotes for one of my answers?

@LiamW giffgaff?

@BryanDenny Google it ;)

It's a UK MVNO

huh, never heard of it before

8:53 PM
@LiamW BTW, that's one that took me a little more time to compose :)

@Izzy I can guess..
The issue is that most questions that need long answers have already been asked and answered :(
@BryanDenny Well, you wouldn't of unless you live in the UK, and most people here hadn't heard of it until they started sponsoring TBBT and Rude Tube...

That's what you say. I always find something new to ask. But first I ponder for days or weeks about how to do it best.
And most times already include a partial answer, asking others to fill the gap.

@Izzy Thats where I fail - I don't like asking questions in real life for one thing, and then I worry when I ask things online (which is easier) that it could be a stupid question.

Still waiting for the latter on How to deal with (orphaned) WakeLocks?, by the way...
Aw, well -- if it really turns out to sound "stupid", and gets 3 downvotes, you still can delete it again #D

I have no idea about that question - I know about it though, but I have never experienced wakelocks...

8:57 PM

Oh, 2:0 for Bryan...

@Izzy That is another thing. If an answer/question I spent loads of time on gets loads loads of downvotes then I get really upset as I wasted my own time for nowt...

@LiamW That's how I started building up rep -- the Zuul stuck me into that corner. I went through the whole list 4 or 5 times. Earned me a lot of revival badges LOL
That's how it looks at first sight. But you learn from that.
Downvotes mostly don't come out of nothing. I e.g. learned from them to not give an answer from a "guess" (we had that yesterday: guesses go to comments ;)
2
...and you can "convert" them to answers lateron if they fit ;)

But guesses are needed to find an answer sometimes, and most askers don't reply to the comments when I am online, so someone else ends up posting the answer instead :(
I am at school 6 hours and 5 minutes a day...

9:13 PM
That's something that happened to me from time to time. There was a guy named Liam who converted my comments to his answers. Heard of him?

@Izzy No, sorry. No 'Guy' at least...

I'm at work 10h a day. And sometimes it gets really busy there :)

@Izzy And Liam is definitely a boys name...
@Izzy Well, you can stay up late and answer questions. I'm not allowed!

Yeah, thought so -- so sorry for the "gender-change", no offense meant...
You think I am allowed? What do you guess why I suddenly disappear in the middle of a discussion? Mom, wife calls... XD

I can't believe I only got 10 rep today :(
I have a mock English exam tomorrow... GREAT

9:17 PM
Oh welcome! I just wanted to say that as well!

@Izzy More allowed than me ;)

Maybe :)

Have to go, was supposed to be in bed 2 minutes ago :/ (It's 9:18PM here)

OK, good night then! See ya around!
