Hi @D.Hutchinson
Someone here last spoke about housing problems
My roommate keeps having parties and this is finals week and she does not care
I've spoken to her before (she does not listen) after which I spoke to the landlord, who does not seem to care
This is stupid, this is finals week, how do people not have anything else to do this weekend
Anyone?

do you know what the most important part of housing is?
it's the warm bath facility.
here as far as I know, only some academic institutes and remote outskirt have free public bath rooms having warm shower facility. In this big city, nobody sells warm shower cheaply; the only warm bath facility sold is in hotel; you need to order a hotel room to use its warm shower facility and ordering a hotel room is very expensive, far more expensive than renting a house.

My uni dorms have attached bathrooms with warm shower facilities, so does every house in the county..

3:15 AM
I used to live on school dorm, which also always had warm shower facility. school dorm is the only cheap housing here. Outside school, you can't afford to rent a house unless you have a decent salary.

Sure that makes sense

3:59 AM
but not everone can graduate with a position offering a decent salary.

4:19 AM
Yeah, I dont know how that works, but if you wait long enough I'm pretty sure someone can come along and help you.
btw.. my roommate has created this toxic environment in the house.. totally shits on the whole thing.

i used to have 3 roommates who I didn't talk with often; I only went to my dorm room when I wanted to take a shower and sleep; but whenever I went back my dorm room, I saw it was always clean; I thought my roommates made the cleaning often.

5:55 AM
will someone help me? I have been asking for position for long.

@CaptainBohemian With what? Finding a warm shower?

of course not
asking for an academic position

Well, that’s very broad …

Q: What is unclear about my question?

user84127My question about the application process at the CNRS has been "put on hold" for being "unclear". I am truly at a loss regarding what is supposedly unclear about it. I'm asking what is expected about the reports on past and projected work: their level of detail, their length, their structure. I'm...

@Wrzlprmft Are you there? There is a vandalism attempt to edit. Please help ourselves to reject it. Thanks.

@scaaahu Done.

Thanks. @Wrzlprmft

@scaaahu Might you point me to the question in question? I'd like to see what was attempted.

@Wrzlprmft Huh, pretty weird, why would anyone do that?

@FrankFYC They want to annoy us; they want to test a spam bot; they got confused; …

Hi Guys
Even before this I was bullied for a while, I guess academia is a harsh place, but has anyone here ever been in a position where they were bullied? What did they do?
In a previous university, I think I pissed off someone by (seemingly) going against his personal beliefs ( to be honest the guy was forcing them on me which was highly inappropriate ), so he rallied up a mob and sent them all after me. It got so stupid after a point, I saw highly intelligent, sensible and honest people act like complete maniacs. You would expect academics to think twice before believing anything, but I saw people take in complete lies and rumors rush into forcing them on me.
I first thought that they were being being this bull**** that 'bullying' me is for my own good, then it slowly started dawning on me that, they just did this of the visceral fun it entailed. I mean, think about it when you give a bunch of 8 year olds a piniata and baseball bats and then remove their blindfolds, won't they all take great happiness by beating it into a pulpy mess? Morality obviously never exists, laws thrown out the window, so it was like that (kind of).
btw, the reason I pissed off someone higher up was because of a career change I wanted to make, it was a personal choice and they kept threatening me over it. I can appreciate when people give advice, but it was more of a 'dont do this or else'. Later on I found out that you're never supposed to talk about your career choices with a shitty superior, (it can lead to harassment like this).
So that's my story, I saw the most respected brilliant minds of my country act like brainless monkeys simply because it was funny. You would expect this to be unbelievable, that people get sense after a while, but trust me, it does not happen. I don't know how many laws were broken but I can tell you, it was a surreal experience. Intelligent, smart people acting like dumb brainless snerks because someone asked them to do so.
I don't know what good came out of it though. When you do something like that, you are obviously aware that the welfare of the said person is the last thing on your mind (that's a blatant excuse people like this give themselves, but so does every schoolyard bully to be honest). I think they all got so caught up gleefully beating up the piniata that they forgot why they were doing so in the first place, or who gave them their bats, or who strung up the piniata there?

Or if it is a pinata that they're beating?
I would deem such people stupid, but it would be an insult to the word itself.

4:14 PM
I hope in the circle of life, for all their efforts they put to 'fix' someone, I hope someone 'fixes' them the exact same way.

btw.. My roommate has no shame, I was speaking to people from back home and she kept being noisy / loud in the background and keot insulting me. This place is unlivable at this moment

Hi @Ponponhollamon - go into industry, perhaps. Sky's the limit, I guess? I don't really* believe in that cliche, but I also will be heading into industry at the start of the new year, I think, mostly just to explore different industries.
@Ponponhollamon, you can then make enough money to live on your own and not have to deal with roommates ...
How come beagles are so cheap, compared to like, golden retrievers. Beagles are so cute ... yet they're like 1/5th the cost of a golden puppy.
Supply and demand? And, I am guessing there's not much demand for beagles ...
@CaptainBohemian, I think the most important part of housing is having private and quiet roommates. I'll take cold showers over loud roommates. I rather have peace and quiet in my living space.
I'm having trouble acclimating to non-academic life. From observing people around me, the conversations are so basic, and everyone is just trying to hook up, date, break up, marry someone.
The most complex conversations revolve around knowing what to order at a restaurant ... or at a bar / club ...
It's a bit scary to know that that's the most I have to look forward to in life, if I leave either research, teaching, or both.
It's scary to think that lunch will be the highlight of my day, and brunches the highlight of my weekend ..
