@Aubrey I have not seen any official way to promote a community pole. But I think you can ask users in the chat rooms (this site or other stack exchange sites) to participate your poll. Some websites have very crowded chatrooms and users are sometimes open to such activities. Most of the users are so friendly and ready to help other users.
Also, you can post a question in meta.academia and ask users such as more established users and moderators about whether there exists any ways to promote your poll or not.
However, I think that if you are seeking only the percentage of the male or female users of Academia website only, my first solution to ask users in other SE sites may not work for you.
These came to my mind and I hope they help you.

@Aubrey I think mentioning it in here is best. It's worth posting the answer link into chat on a line all to itself: that way, you get a nice preview:

EnergyNumbersIf you received an email from an author of a new paper, someone who you've had no contact with previously, and the email was to bring their paper to your attention, to let you know that they'd cited one or more of your papers in it, and to thank you for your work, what would be your reaction?

I always hear professors joke about how textbook authors actually had their graduate students write the book for them.
How common is this?
Are my profs not joking after all?
