When I'm telling a story about some place I went to (my workplace) that I didn't introduce yet but it's implied (this isn't terribly important but who knows), can I start my narrative with So I came there and...? It sounds kinda weird to me, but it doesn't sound illegal. Of course, So I went there and... rolls off the tongue, but I imagine the former as sort of implying my point of view has shifted to the workplace and I'm assuming familiarity, whereas went implies distance.

If people use it, should you use it?

I dunno. If it works with your style, go with it

I asked the person I told this to if it sounded weird to them and they said I should've said went.

@userr2684291 That sounds weird to me... unless you're at that place, I wouldn't... "came" sort of implies that you're talking about the place you already are... so "When I came to work this morning..." sort of implies that I'm at work right now.
