AIQ

"the fact that they haven't caught him yet's one hell of an achievement" Is it true that "yet's" is common in speech? This is the first time I am hearing that contraction. Can we then contract "done" too in "the very fact that this couldn't be done's proof that he is a loser"
Why does it feel strange?

@AIQ I think it is strange, unless the author is trying to capture how someone said something. It’s not unusual to blur the “is” into a previous word in some contexts I think. I wouldn’t recommend anyone try to speak that way though.

Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS), also known as Todd's syndrome or dysmetropsia, is a neuropsychological condition that distorts perception. People may experience distortions in visual perception such as micropsia (objects appearing small), macropsia (objects appearing large), pelopsia (objects appearing to be closer than they are), or teleopsia (objects appearing to be further away than they are). Size distortion may occur in other sensory modalities as well. Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (AIWS) is often associated with migraines, brain tumors, and psychoactive drug use. It can also be the initial...
I had strange repeating dreams in childhood in which I was playing on a stadium field, or running, with a coach who gave directions, and suddenly the proportions changed very drastically, the field grew to a cosmic proportions and I woke up in fright.
And after waking up I felt as if the room was of gigantic proportions, for several seconds.

@CowperKettle How did you manage to get rid of them - or did they just stop one day?
My husband got rid of a frightening recurring dream by getting a tattoo. It would be hard to capture the feeling that everything is gigantic that way though

They just stopped
My brother has epilepsy. Maybe these were also some nocturnal seiures? Who knows.

We know so little about our own brains
It’s like asking “what color are your elbows” but there are no accurate mirrors
And nobody is sure everyone sees the same colors they do

Getting a tattoo seems a bit "extreme"? :-)

He’s an artist. As soon as he got it out of his head and made it real, it stopped troubling him

Did he try therapy?

I’ve had one Alice in Wonderland type dream that involved going through doors. Every door was a huge disconnect between who I was and what was happening, but it all felt perfectly natural.
@skullpetrol No I don’t think so. A tattoo is cheaper ;)

:-)
Iirc he let me use one of his Monroe works for an avatar.
It was a Monroe lookalike, I think.
Do thank him again from me @ColleenV

@skullpetrol I think it was a picture of Betty Grable and he enjoys people appreciating his work

Yup, that's it.

He has a lathe now and has been doing some woodworking. He’s been too busy fixing the house to do any big artworks lately though

He is at his most creative when he firsts wakes up and he has always had trouble sleeping well
I wonder if that is a characteristic of all artistic people

@ColleenV thanks for sharing
> Let us learn to dream.
Yet we understand so very little about dreaming and its relation to the brain.

There is some amazing research on memory consolidation during sleep. This year, it was discovered that there's a shifting balance of two types of waves that promote either consolidation or a deletion of a learned memory.
And amazing research also on brainwave deficits in patients with schizophrenia, directly linking these to consolidation of a learned mechanical task.
Basically you can measure how well the person's task learned during the day is being stored into deep memory by measuring the synchronization of particular brainwaves during sleep
Furthermore, a new type of the MEG scaner is being developed that would not require any liquid nitrogen for cooling, which will make it accessible to all scientists.
This will make a revolution in brain science.

@CowperKettle That would be pretty amazing
I would think the “big data” advancements would help find patterns we overlooked as we collect more data

Mari-Lou A6th November 2019 In light of recent events… I don't think Winterbash's gonna hatpen this year But on the off chance that SE will uphold the festive tradition, I suggest the meh cap to celebrate the event. Earn the hat on sites where you have at least 2k rep, by not posting comments o...
