@RydwolfPrograms 🫂
I'm cross-posting this from Math SE chat, but here's one strange story of mine:
When I was obsessed with polytopes as of 11 years old, I was drawing Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams.
One naughty friend of mine saw that and yelled, "Hey! What's with these eyeballs!?"

@Ginger I will stand with you (or sit, because I get tired pretty quickly). I don't get why cargo pants get hate
My wardrobe would be composed entirely of cargo pants if it weren't for the fact that every pair I can find is cargo shorts. I only have one pair of full-length cargo pants :(
@emanresuA I see amogus
cargo shorts?
no, car go road
if cargo shorts you gonna have some flat pants that's for sure
That's the point. Why buy an iron when you can run over your clothes?
saw this on YT but I've never related to something so hard:

I sure love the american college education system
what did it do this time?
Nobody I've talked to has not had at least one complete breakdown this month over trying to figure out how paying for this stuff actually works
'cause it's all abstract until you get an email that you owe a $3k-$8k down payment in the next week
My roommate, first-generation college student whose mom spent all her college savings on drugs, was sure that federal aid would pay for everything and when she actually checked turns out nope, $6k a year out of pocket even with federal loans
Meanwhile I got insanely lucky because my dad just sold his truck due to a relative dying and leaving him a newer one, so they've got the cash to spot me a $7700 down payment
for one semester
you need a new down payment every semester?!?
yeah this is just for the 3-month payment plan that keeps you from paying all $7k (for my roommate) or $19k (me) at once (since no federal loans or scholarships are disbursed yet)
yeesh. And you think my stories from uni are bad :p
2:37 AM
free community college and a tent is looking real nice right now
that's lowkey (understandment) fricked
(the costs)
yeah
And mine are with a $50k/year grant
Oh and the cherry on fucking top is I applied for a private student loan (with my parents as cosigners) and got rejected
@RydwolfPrograms $19k at once?
is that for the entire degree/duration or for one year?
lmao
a semester
tf?

private college babyyyyyyyyyy
I'm $19k in student debt for 4 years
not a single semester
The breakdown is like $3k student health insurance, ~60% tuition and fees, ~40% housing and meal plan
gosh dang
the famous one airport in texas
it's big, clearly
they probably mean this one: airportguide.com/airport/info/YTEX
Texas, Queensland, Australia
2:48 AM
You can pass through Palestine on the way to Paris, then up through Memphis 'til you hit Miami, turn around and hit the Whitehouse on the way to San Diego, all without leaving Texas
Oh I forgot about Italy, TX, we have that too
City namers are some of the biggest pranksters around
maybe that could be my back-up back-up career
@RydwolfPrograms Which is somewhere between Nevada and Westphalia
Oh can't forget about New Sweden, Colorado, and Egypt
We've also got a China way to the east
All that's left is a TX, TX
So good bad but they named it twice anyway
@RydwolfPrograms Plus Carthage, Atlanta, Detroit, and Reno
hey wait there's a Newcastle in Texas
have I been living in Texas this whole time?
2:58 AM
It's all been a dream. You've been trapped in a confusingly named Texas town, and so has everyone else
Wait there's two Renos
@RydwolfPrograms [citation-needed]
One by Dallas and one by Paris
what next, there's nobody named gay bowser?

@Mukundan314 Side note: Even without that, replacing python ints with gmpy2 mpzs everywhere sped things up a lot
It's a constant time optimisation (afaict) but it helps
I'm pretty sure multiplication and division of long numbers are asymptotically faster
Huh okay
I wouldn't be surprised if gmp special-cases division by multiples of 2^31 (iirc it uses that base)
7:41 AM
though the difference of O(n log n) vs O(n^1.5something) is barely noticeable unless you get close to 1 million digits
where n = number of digits
I mean... my tinylisp interpreter gets into the hundreds of millions of digits
lol then that does matter a lot
8:40 AM
@emanresuA The list of your list answers goes on and on just like a typical list.
@RydwolfPrograms Look at Kiribati, you can drive from London to Paris to Poland to Banana just on that tiny island. And they’re more than 12 hours ahead of utc

Q: Ways to paint a backbone on a tree

emanresu ASay I have some unlabelled tree graph: I'll define a "backbone" as a path on a graph that can't be extended - both its ends are at terminal vertices. There are three ways to overlay a backbone on the above graph: However, you might notice that the first two are the same up to rearrangement (or ...

why did I have to refresh for 20 seconds to get that to show up :-(

@emanresuA That reminds me, look at the very centre of my pfp at full resolution:
That's been there for about a month, put it there on a whim :p
12:30 PM
@emanresuA Aw man, now we need to recalculate the true dimensions of your pfp :p

2 hours later…
2:07 PM
@emanresuA LMAO
that's great
I don't think it's visible at any resolution SE uses for PFPs :p
:66130208 is this referring to how chat is probably having some difficulties right now?
now why didn't that turn into a reply?
it took me multiple tries to send those messages
it's just straight up deleted your original message
I had a few messages in another room deleted as well
I deleted it :p
because on my end it didn't send
but the deletion didn't seem to go through either
it did send though

2:11 PM
ok wait lemme write a timeline of what happened
it straight up doesn't exist
but in theory, it should
1. I reply to emanresu with "LMAO"
2. I send "that's great"
3. both messages time out
4. I resend both
5. I reload the page and see that the first two did send, and then "LMAO" sent again
6. I try to delete all of them, and get more errors
7. I send "chat pls"
8. I reload the page again, and now they're all gone, including "chat pls"
9. I resend "LMAO" and "that's great", and they both go through
that's roughly what happened in the other room I mentioned
although "chat pls" was definitely registered in the database, I replied to it, and its message ID is in the reply

CMQ how can I sample a connected DAG with n nodes uniformly at random?
Chat's technical issues are so endearing
5
Like if a normal service goes down or has issues I wanna punch it but if chat hiccups or does something annoying I'm like "aww what a lovable goofball"
@Simd There's probably a clever algorithm to do it faster but honestly just traverse it and make a list of pointers (or your language's equivalent), and uniformly random index those
@RydwolfPrograms I am not sure that makes it connected or a DAG does it?

1 hour later…
6:15 PM
@Simd Do you mean for the sample to also be a connected DAG?
You can still make it work in that case
Arbitrarily designate the node you start from as the root, then also record for each node... okay it's a bit more complicated but you have all kinds of options still depending on time and memory constraints
And what relationship you want the structure of the sample to have with the original graph, because you can trivially just choose one node of the sample to connect everything else to if there isn't one in particular :P
But yeah, for the rooted tree idea, store a pointer to each node's parent along with the node itself, then sample node-parent pairs, and draw edges between the nodes in the sample by traversing the original graph upwards through parents until you reach a node that is in the sample
And if the root isn't in the sample, then just connect the topmost node of each disconnected sub-tree or something like that I guess lol
It really depends on what you need
There isn't just one root in a dag necessarily
@UnrelatedString yes
7:20 PM
Ooh, yeah, wait I was getting mixed up with unrooted trees LMAO
Because assigning an arbitrary root in the middle could actually introduce cycles if you also invert the edges, and that's probably not what you want anyways
Maybe some kind of "parent directionality" could work... hmm
7:52 PM
@Ginger It's just barely visible on my user page iirc
@emanresuA AMAZING
@RydwolfPrograms Shoutout to antialiasing, I think I've lost the original
(not hard to recreate though)
