@RydwolfPrograms "But I want to keep my organs"
@RydwolfPrograms this sounds like a Stratego ripoff
1:59 AM
When I try to boot vs code I get an error about a missing package.json. halp

do I just go to SO
2:16 AM
Me: Oh, this got two upvotes in the sandbox, it's probably a decent challenge then!
Challenge: Hasn't made it onto HNQ after almost 24 hours :\
Also what happened here
2:42 AM
Yeah I'm creating an SO post about this because I am lost
2:54 AM
stackoverflow.com/q/78605218/6253337 if anyone wants to follow along
and it already has a close vote with no comments explaining why. Not really sure what I expected :facepalm:
3:51 AM
@DLosc Yeah, I was thinking about that a bit
But it's a pretty superficial similarity
(pieces called 'soldiers' on a square board that win fights based on rank, and that's as far as it goes)
4:12 AM
> Providers are implemented as either a Java JMS implementation or an adapter to a non-Java MOM.
mfw parents run on the JVM
TIL, while doing some unrelated research, that the entirety of surge.sh once got taken down for days because the NRA was mad about a single parody site hosted on it
NRA fricking with my uni assignment fr fr
In other news, the NRA uses Cloudflare as their DDoS protection, runs their homepage using Microsoft IIS with error reporting disabled, and the site 500s if you make GET requests to certain endpoints
@lyxal (for reference: I used surge.sh to host a static site for uni lately because github.io is disabled for private repos and I don't use my main for uni projects)
Unfortunately due to their use of Cloudflare, I probably wouldn't be able to figure out any more information about what version of IIS or what OS or hosting provider their servers are
The fact that it's a 500 rather than a 4xx is really interesting tho
4:19 AM
rediscovered enterprise PHP is a thing today
not happy
enterprise being a business grade framework
4:47 AM
Got halfway through planning my courses for my first semester of college before almost getting IP blocked by CMU for scraping 1500 course descriptions/prereqs in order to make a more convenient course catalog
I'm literally gingering so hard right now
This is gonna be a fun four years lol (legitimately)
Anyway good night tnbeople
5:15 AM
@RydwolfPrograms what degree?

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

BubblerCount trapped self-avoiding walks fastest-code path-finding Imagine an infinite grid of square tiles. You are standing on one of the tiles. You can move to any of the four cardinally adjacent tiles in a move, but you cannot step on the same tile twice. Calculate the number of ways you can get you...

@RydwolfPrograms ahaha smart
@RydwolfPrograms lmao I also made my own course catalog at some point cuz legit every official website at my uni sucks (although we have an actual API so fortunately I did not get throttled lol)
i absolutely despise the interface for searching courses at unc
virtually unusable on mobile and frankly not much more usable on desktop :P
sometimes you have to make up extra criteria to narrow a search down enough for it to not refuse to give you results
sometimes it just hallucinates gen ed requirements you're searching for, i think literally at random
1:23 PM
There are 2 numbers 0..=4. I need a shorter way to write a>1||b<1
I came up with a/2*4>=b but it's the same length
integers or any numbers? also I assume by 0..=4 you mean like 0 <= x <= 4 right
Integers
And yes
2:09 PM
in that case wouldn't a>1||!b work for at least -1 byte?
or even a||!b depending on the language
that's a >= 1 though
ohh, strictly greater
yeah
In Rust you can't implicitly convert between booleans and integers unfortunately
:(
@mousetail i take it you also can't invert the condition for free to use a/2*4<b for -1
2:14 PM
That would also cost me a byte somewhere else
2:35 PM
@mousetail a/2|!b if the output just needs to be truthy
2:48 PM
@UnrelatedString At least your course catalog is aware of the existence of gen ed requirements
@lyxal No clue
Technically I'm admitted to the college of humanities and social sciences, so I'd major in some sort of interdisciplinary poli sci stuff, but I'm probably going to spend just as much time on science and engineering and TCS and AI, assuming they'll even let me lol
(a lot of those classes fill up fast and since I'm not in the college of science or the college of engineering I won't be a priority)
I might stay for a fifth year because I want to take literally everything
Biology? I'd major in it
Chemistry? I'd major in it
Physics? I'd major in it
TCS? I'd major in it
AI? I'd major in it
Neuroscience? I'd major in it
ECE? I'd major in it
Political Science? I'd major in it
Cybersecurity? I'd major in it
Russian? Sure
Air Force ROTC? Sign me up
Gender Studies? A little can't hurt
Philosophy? A guilty pleasure
Art? Definitely need some art in there mhm
I plan on just kinda showing up in some of the classes they don't let me take in a sort of drywall camo and hope nobody notices me all year
if u need help with russian im here
'cause I really am just there to learn stuff I don't give a shit about the actual degree lol
also ai ew
AI the subject is fascinating, AI as a plaything of incompetent capitalists is the gross thing
Anyway, off to work o/
There's more to ai than genai
3:00 PM
@RydwolfPrograms so true
The interesting part of AI is just linear algebra
@RydwolfPrograms shoulda chosen compsci/software engineering so you can learn about the waterfall method and agile like 4 different times
I learned scrum 3 time but when I got a job it did kanban
I'm starting to realise that all of this development scheduling stuff is all theory and no practice :p
Yea it really doesn't work at all in practice
All the fanboys be like "If it doesn't work you are doing it wrong"

@RydwolfPrograms opposite of xkcd.com/1052

2 hours later…
7:23 PM
@lyxal So i assume of i comply with the TOS i will be unalived?
@lyxal if they do, they are def boxed types
7:50 PM
@lyxal yeah no thanks :p
Also it probably helped my admissions odds pretty well that I applied for what's probably the least popular department at the school
I asked the political science professor who was sorta in charge there if they had any professors/alumni in notable roles in government and she kinda just avoided the question and said something about future growth or something like that 💀
But they did have lots of interesting looking courses (including way more than I would've expected on war strategy and logistics lol), and a study-abroad program in DC, so I think I should be pretty well trained for my job
@mousetail I mean, you do you ig
But that's like saying bitwise math is the cool part of cryptography
8:13 PM
it is
8:28 PM
I just found an old KotH idea called "Conway's Game of Death" and that's such a fire name for a challenge
8:51 PM
@lyxal And this is why I'm a mathematics major
my non engineering compsci degree has been pretty low on that stuff
9:40 PM
To quote a friend who's a compsci major: "You do it for the degree, not necessarily for the classes"
Wait did PVRIS also do a song for LoL? Why does League of Legends share my music taste...
@emanresuA wtf that's so backwards
10:28 PM
@noodleperson ♫ Just put me down as undecided--every major's wonderful ♫
@emanresuA I... kind of get that? My CompSci major involved a bunch of intro classes to various computer-related subjects, most of which I don't really use, but it's good to have a general idea of how they work. Kind of like the computer-specific equivalent of a liberal arts education. Is that anywhere close to what they meant, do you think?
