Q: What's your favorite code golf video?

Filip HaglundDo you have a favorite code-golf video? Maybe someone golfing before it was cool? Or because it was a way to solve a problem?

Is this on-topic? Feels like it shouldn't be, but the username question was allowed

wait wtf
why is my diamond orange... this is just a normal meta post

???

wait never mind, there's an announcement i missed. nvm, i'm just blind
it didn't highlight the announcement as unread though... strange
@user the diamond in my top bar turns blue when someone posts on meta and turns orange when the CMs send out an important notification

O

7:06 PM
i clicked it and it only highlighted the meta post as unread so i was confused as to why it was orange, but then i realized there was also an announcement from half an hour ago that i hadn't read that wasn't highlighted. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@hyper-neutrino Which announcement?
@user I think it is, but its unlikely to get much attention

it's private lol. just a notification to a teams post

@ngn yes but I still don't have fast code that works
@hyper-neutrino thanks!
@StackMeter hi

hi @Anush
saw your comment, currently trying to find the linear solution

@StackMeter cool.

7:13 PM
not sure how one would do it

Do you know how find the median in linear time?

I think so

It's just like that
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weighted_median if you can read this code is very close

I found a good one that guarantees linear time

@user either way I think it's a cool question

7:16 PM
Unfortunately, cool questions aren't always on-topic :(
Def not going to close vote it, though

yeah

So, I find this quite funny: Listen to Your Community, But Don't Let Them Tell You What to Do is one of the early "canonical" Coding Horror blog posts that help lay out the mission and vision of SO/SE. Something it says as part of it is:
> It always depressed me to see bug trackers and feedback forums with thousands of items languishing there in no man's land with no status at all. That's a sign of a neglected community, and worse, a dishonest relationship with the community. It is sadly all too typical. Don't do this!
Fun fact: I have a way of measuring how many bugs/FRs have no status: data.stackexchange.com/meta.stackoverflow/query/1407925/…. Turns out, on SO, its 9760 :P

"Fun" :(

However, for us, it's 6, so clearly we are a less-neglected community than SO :P

\o/
now consider the ratio of and become depressed again

It just means I'm going to be pushing for shorter ad windows now (which is more effort to run)

hopefully they do get some system for dynamic/rotating ads though.
they have said that they will / are looking into doing that so... let's just hope it's within 6-8 weeks :P

At the very least, we know it'll be 6 months as that's the length of the trial period

*6-8 months
Also, yay for rep farming on MSE. Now I can downvote the new ad announcement

7:23 PM
lmao

@StackMeter cool. Which problem does it solve?

That moment when you have a gold status-completed tag badge

Most of the higher rep staff have that on MSE
Jeff also has a gold [stack-overflow] tag badge on MSE :P
In fact, they're all either current or former staff

lol

@Anush it finds the median
@user me when no tag-badge:
oh wow

7:32 PM
@user I'm 13 upvotes and 5 answers away from the bronze one on our meta :P
People, please post more [feature-requests] :P

I'm 8 upvotes away from 1k
we need to get the rickroll to 10

no, it's a really boring submission

@cairdcoinheringaahing I'd be the first to do so and I'm the closest to it (Doorknob is second, needing 8 more answers)

ok
@cairdcoinheringaahing why do you even want a tag on meta

@StackMeter Because it shows I've put in valuable contributions to the site

7:36 PM
ok cool

@StackMeter Which one?

@StackMeter I've got a silver discussion tag badge already, [status-completed] would be my second tag badge (not counting bronze/silver/gold of the same one) :P

@user if you actually want to do it, this one
if it isn't available, any other one

i cannot believe that the polyglot answer chaining challenge is still going

neither can I

7:44 PM
@StackMeter Oh, that one

please don't request upvotes here just for the sake of it - if you have an actual cool submission you'd like to promote more, a) you can request it in the blog chat and b) that's allowed - the general rule of thumb is in the chatiquette:
> The rule of thumb to follow is "If somebody else had posted this, would I still really want to share it?" If the answer is yes, then go ahead.
@totallyhuman isn't it just stasoid lol

@totallyhuman stasoid is a god

how can you possibly tell me that this monstrosity runs in 306 languages

stasoid has transcended beyond humanity and has become the polyglotter

@hyper-neutrino sorry - I just thought it was a cool answer since it started the chain

7:45 PM
it's quite boring TBH. no offense to you, but all early answers to that challenge are extremely uninteresting

you do not tell me this is syntactically valid in 306 langs

stasoid can program in any language, including Parseltongue

@hyper-neutrino fair enough

@hyper-neutrino Unfortunately, most of the older ones are too
That challenge turned out to be a mistake

stasoid has 112 silver badges. 4 of those are Yearling badges. 108 are Necromancers. 99 of those Necromancers are from the polyglot challenge

7:46 PM
Let's give them one more Necromancer badge :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing how do I get a Yearling badg

Be here for a year
You get it every year that you've earned 200 or more reputation

Also, you need like 200 rep, but you've got that already
Ninja'd

do you need to get 200 rep in the past year or do you just need to have a total rep diff of 200+ on that site and then just get it annually

I've been here for 4 months, and yet talked in chat for 7 (also close to 1000 rep)

7:48 PM
200 in the past year
@user You can give them 20 more if you'd like

be warned that if you upvote all of them it will get reversed almost certainly

@cairdcoinheringaahing :( I don't :( I think the missing bit is that those are all devs or people with dev background. Hard to status complete stuff if you're not.

They can have 1

@Catija Oh yeah, forgot that bit :/
Yaakov looks to be the next dev to get it, he's only 14 answers away

@Catija I didn't know you dropped by sometimes

7:52 PM
@Catija Was Shog a dev?

we should tag every question yaakov completes with haiku as well so he can get the gold haiku badge on mm :P

Cause I know that all of the others either are/were devs, but wasn't Shog a CM?
@hyper-neutrino cough cough :P

@hyper-neutrino on your left

caird ninja'd you by around 3 minutes :p

7:57 PM
there goes my badge lol

what badge?

you get a badvge for editing a tag wiki
I got one on meta once

I didn't edit it, I just linked to the tag :P

oh you edited it?

yeah

7:59 PM
nvm then. your edit is in review so i wouldn't know since i can't review it either (i see "edit pending")
what did you even change it to?

just saying "this is about haikus. A haiku is [such and such]." but better and not entirely awful

Tag wikis should generally also include what kind of questions that tag would be used on

oh
if it gets rejected, I at least know what to do next time
also my CMC is on the starred messages
go try it

I would say this badge deserves no info TBH...
it isn't exactly on-topic to meta, everything it's tagged with is more or less some joke or thing that is mostly tied to something else like spam detection bugs or whatever else

@StackMeter My mistake, let me just clear that star :P

8:02 PM
lul

gottem

@StackMeter Occasionally. Blame @hyper-neutrino :)
@cairdcoinheringaahing In a former life, yes. Here he's always been a CM but the dev background made it much easier for him to write answers to bug reports (and he would occasionally fix the bugs in some cases, too).

@Catija Hey, I think I'm at least somewhat responsible for bugging you a lot of the time :P

might just go for now
peace

Tangentially. :P

8:03 PM
lol

yeah I accept responsibility for that :P but y'all should blame caird too, I'm not the one who dug 30 thousand meta posts out of the abyss (which needed to be done anyway, but still :P)

Next time, I'll just borrow the diamond for a couple of days, do the retagging and give it back :P

in The 2nd Monitor, Jun 18 at 12:55, by Simon Forsberg
@Peilonrayz Are you faking a diamond for us?
in The 2nd Monitor, Jun 18 at 12:56, by Peilonrayz
No, no, you've just temporarily stolen mine and the system is refusing to give me my diamond back! I blame caching ;)
^ It's possible to steal diamonds @caird, you can go ahead and steal HN's right now :P

...How did you just have those on hand? :P

I didn't, I searched for them right now
The second message is starred, so I saw it a few days ago and remembered it just now

8:11 PM
@user Nah, I'm currently planning a heist to steal the diamonds from all 4 mods so I become a modmodmodmod :P

you'd just become a playing card
4

All hail caird the %%%% :P

The problem with being a mod is that you can never fully divide anything cleanly :(

8:31 PM
chat golf: create a function that outputs a string that will make my wife and kids come back. p.s. jessica if youre reading this im sorry please message me back

@SlamJammington ...you good there?

yes
I saw some guy who made like 8 different instagram accounts that were named like "please_unblock_me" "it_Was_a_mistake" "sarah_please_talk_to_me"
and followed his ex, it was brutal

@SlamJammington Here is Jessica

(borat voice) my wife

@SlamJammington Scala: _=>"Come back, or I'll burn your house down"

8:37 PM
Remind me to never break up with you @user :P

How often do people ask for code golfs that are just their homework problems? It looks like 1-2 a week

Yeah, that seems about right

You'd expect them to at least ask on Stack Overflow or Mathematics SE or smth

In the last 90 days, we've had 401 questions asked, and closed 40 of them as "Not suitable for the site"

10%? That's a bit high

8:45 PM
We've closed 32% of the questions asked in the last 90 days

It was close to 60% the last time I checked a couple of months ago
So we've closed 20 dupes, 40 as "Not suitable for the site" and the rest as "Needs details or clarity"
Interestingly, despite having a pop-con that was basically closed as "Too opinion based and/or too broad", we haven't closed anything as opinion based or too broad :P

lol interesting :P i mean, we don't really use the default opinion based / broad closures because we have our custom no-objective-criterion close message

@cairdcoinheringaahing You got me interested in CR's stats. Seems my page has broke. Apparently we've had 24 questions in the past 90 days, and 5 in the past 30...

Is that at this page?

9:01 PM
Ah you've found the problem meta != main...

:P
> I am closing this question because it turns out this isn't something we can do.

on Lit POB is the most-often-used close reason, probably because people see "literature" and they think "discussion"?

That's one of the custom close reasons used on our meta :P

What is POB?

Primarily Opinion Based

9:04 PM
sniped

Ahh ty

@bobble Has Lit graduated yet?

nope, we are in Perpetual Beta (tm)
We got one custom close reason for "list of recommendations"

So its "only" 2k to see the mod tools/stats?

"only", and it's a pretty boring page since I recognize every question/answer :p

9:05 PM
Lit has that little activity?

TBF that's less about activity and more about how active is bobble? :P
I recognise basically any question posted here in the past few months

QPD of 2.1, so it is entirely manageable to check on every new Q and A
... while doing the same thing for Puzzling. And reading most new meta-meta Qs.

Biweekly Mini Golf drafting is open! Head over to the BMG Drafts room to post your ideas. The event will begin at 00:00 UTC on 2021-06-24, around three hours from the time of posting this message.

I also am by far the most prolific editor on Puzzling and Lit... perhaps I should get one of those things called "a life", any of you know how?

If we did, do you think we'd be here? :P

9:08 PM
...yes, of course, a life. I have one of those indeed :P

look at the color of my name and ask me if I have a life :P

Do you have a life

@hyper-neutrino why does that link to the transcript and not the room directly?

Blame HN's userscripts

Because of HN's userscript :p

9:12 PM
@bobble because I'm used to linking to transcripts so people who click the link don't immediately join the room
I don't actually have a userscript for this, I just go to the transcript manually and link from there

Boooooring. A real programmer writes a userscript to make the link and reply to messages automatically

this doesn't matter so much for this but in TL it's good practice to link to transcripts so that you don't cause like 5 mods to join a room which is a very awkward situation

@hyper-neutrino Careful hyper, even mentioning the TL seems to make mods appear ;)

Or a very opportune situation if you're a diamond robber

---strikethrough--- strikethrough

9:15 PM
I know, I keep forgetting how quirky (read: stupid) chat is
:P

I count 4 mods and one CM here rn :P

Time to put your plan into action?

@user This will be the perfect bait for my diamond heist :P

9:52 PM
Leave my diamonds alone.

170+ diamonds is too many to steal :P

Oh, @cairdcoinheringaahing and @hyper-neutrino Did y'all finalize the wording for the first time asker modal? I haven't turned that over to them because I wasn't sure if that update was good to go.

oh yeah I don't think we ended up getting a consensus on the wording of the sandbox recommendation

Yeah. :)

9:54 PM
since someone mentioned my wording might be too aggressive / making it seem like a requirement

Family is home but let me know and I'll send it to the devs when y'all are happy.

I don;t think the "Please post to the Sandbox" is too aggressive, but if there are concerns, maybe "We recommend you post to the Sandbox" or "We strongly recommend you post to the Sandbox" if there's space

.... weird

It's been used in 6 posts (the last one links instead of embedding) and is broken in 2 of those :/

10:58 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing yes, it is

@lyxal Change digraphs.most_common(50) to digraphs.most_common()[-50:] (and the same for trigraphs and quadgraphs)

11:19 PM
Ok, it'd be nice to settle this after 2 weeks and multiple drafts so: If you have an objections to the current proposed wording and formatting of the new first time asker modal, please voice them either here in chat or on the meta question as an answer or comment
6
We can give it a couple of days, and if nothing comes up, then I think it's clear the current wording works (cc @Catija, @hyper-neutrino)

OK. :) Sounds good. Just didn't want to drop the ball on my end. :D

@Catija Appreciate the caution, I'm just trying to push this closer to the end of the race :)

So... we're supposed to review the text in the question body, not caird's answer or anything?

("end of the race"? That sounds wrong. "End of the line", "road"? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
@Bubbler Yes, the text in the question body is currently the official feature request
It's been trimmed down and consolidated from all the answers into a version that we think works

Looks good enough to me

11:26 PM
@hyper-neutrino what did you expect?

@cairdcoinheringaahing no objections from me

Meanwhile, the intended trick for checkered tiling is revealed. APL/Jelly anyone? :P

11:43 PM
@Neil i'm not surprised or anything; i'd just rather push it to a comment and have him delete and put it into an edit instead than push it directly into his question as an edit
i've never actually used the latter before actually, lol. haven't found good use for it here

Wait, mods can merge an answer into a question as an edit?

yes, but only if it's a self-answer, I think

Who's going to run BMG this time?
Looks like we currently have 9 starred drafts, so we could do with a couple more stars/drafts/both

I unfortunately have to go quite soon which is the worst timing possible, so one of y'all will have to run it.
