8:00 AM
@hyper-neutrino iiisdsicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicicic, 58 bytes for A-Z
which looks quite optimal

yeah, like i figured. doesn't know how to use {} around c
that is far from optimal
you have 25 ics there so you can group 20 of them into {ic}{ic}

err
the generator looks bad now

it should be close to optimal for most things without an obvious pattern

i want to share the generator with you but can't post tio link here

I guess an optimizer is expected to optimize obvious patterns :P

8:04 AM
i didn't write it

yeah it seems to only use {} to optimize i and d calls to avoid longer chains of operations
and just finds the optimal step from each output to the next
repeating code should at least be {}'d though even if your program isn't smart enough to determine edge-case uses of it

@hyper-neutrino {icic} is shorter

good point

If you ever have two independent loops together, always merge them

but only if the two loops' contents are identical
the result of {ic}{dc} is different from {icdc}

8:14 AM
@Bubbler that is true
@Bubbler but if there is no input nor output, and it's just i and d, they can be merged
{ii}{dd} can be merged`

The point is that xxxxxxxxxxyyyyyyyyyy should be equal to xyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxy in effect
It is 100% true if the two loops only contain i/d, but not likely if s/o/c appears

@Bubbler so the optimiser sould merge any identical loops, or loops that contain i/d only
and anything else left as is

Pretty much yes
though it might break in some rare cases where the value hits 256 or -1
If you ignore them, you can optimize away any id or di

from this point we can fork the generator to check repeated runs
and combine inside a brace

8:35 AM
@Randal'Thor I think 30 is the correct user id - Richard's old account before he was Valorum

9:04 AM
For some reason, I'm certain that Valorum used to have a very active account on SciFi, had it deleted for some reason, then rejoined as Valorum. Yet I just spent 30 minutes meta diving on SFF and can't find why I believe that :/

Huh?
There was a much older user on SFF called Richard, but no relation to the high-rep Richard who became Valorum.

The trick is that {ddddddddd} can be replaced with {{d}i}.

I'd be very interested if this is true, but it's not something I've heard about in 7 years on SFF including 5 as a mod.

or similar

@Randal'Thor Given that users/30/ looks to be still around, I genuinely have no idea why I had that number in my head, and I guess I must have gone of comments with @Richard replies and got them mixed up with Valorum

Q: Consecutive Distance Rating

chunesConsecutive Distance Rating We'll call the consecutive distance rating of an integer sequence the sum of the distances between consecutive integers. Consider 2 9 3 6 8 1. 2 9 3 6 8 1 <----5----> <-2-> <--3--> \$2\$ and \$1\$ are consecutive integers, and their distance apart in the sequence is...

I know that Valorum keeps their SFF account hidden from their other network accounts, which may have contributed to my belief, but that's weird. I think I'll have to do some more diving when I'm not on mobile

9:31 AM
@NewPosts God, mobile Jelly golfing is awful

@cairdcoinheringaahing God, me golfing is awful;
And I don't know Jelly so I don't even understand...

I'll add an explanation, dw :P

9:42 AM
Hello! I'll be undergoing a 30-day name change to Recursive Co. Reason being that it's my name in my friend group. More importantly, you can seek advice from Recursive Co. by typing @RecursiveCo. Why does <code> not work? It's supposed to <do something>.

@Ausername Added a basic explanation, working on a more in depth one, if you'd like to port it :P

Ok, thanks!
@ophact Shouldn't it be Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive Recursive.....

Character limit :(
Are you still seeing ophact or do you see Recursive Co?
Takes some time for name change to apply.

Still seeing ophact
I really don't think that's how it's supposed to be aligned

Prepare for people to get confused about how they recognize the identicon but think "How does this Recursive Co guy behave so much like ophact? And where did ophact go?"
I also wonder why the homepage is not aligned

9:49 AM
yeah what the hell did happen there

text-align: right; -> SE developer: No, that's wrong! It's not right! -> the current homepage

You're still ophact

Check MM, been reported for the last couple of days or so

Hmm

9:52 AM
@ophact Can take up to 30minutes to refresh your chat profile

> recursion ∙ noun ∙ re·cur·sion ∙ /ri-ˈkər-zhən/ ∙ see: recursion

Hello, I have a recursion joke about hello, I have a recursion joke about hello, I have a recursion joke about hello, I have a recursion joke about hello, I have a recursion joke about Maximum call stack size exceeded

CMC: Make a recursive function
(that's not infinite)

@Ausername APL: {∇⍵}
@Ausername oh.
@ophact You need TCO.

JavaScript: f=a=>a?f(0):0

9:57 AM
{0:∇⍵}

@Bubbler Doesn't actually recurse.

Cheats by having a recursive call which is called zero times
ninja'd

@Bubbler {⍺←⍵∇⍵} maybe?

How about {⍵:∇0}
@Adám That's really cool and wacky at the same time

ngn
10:19 AM
@Bubbler in "binomial transform" you say "or infinite integer sequence". how do binomial coefficients work in that case?

:58343037
define f(n):
 if n > 0: return 1
 else: return n * f(n-1)
@Ausername see above

Syntax error: retunr
should be return

oops
fixed

Is that python?

@Ausername Jelly, 2 bytes ߀

10:22 AM
Because "define" should become "def" if so.

@ophact ofc
oops v2

@StackMeter That will loop forever I believe, if n <= 0

@cairdcoinheringaahing oops v3
ok

5 factorial returns 120
usually it would
but yours gives 1

ngn
@ngn @Bubbler oh wait, n is always finite.. never mind.

10:24 AM
def f(n):
if n <= 0: return 1
return n * f(n-1)
fixed

There we go, that's more like it!

and even shaved off an else

def f(n):
 if n<1:return 1
 return n*f(n-1)
Saved some bytes :P

stripping whitespace

f=lambda n:n*f(n-1)if n else 1
even more bytes saved

10:25 AM
@ophact what if n < 0

f=lambda n:n or n*f(n-1)and 1

that's better

that feeling you get when you suddenly realise you can find the difference between the two elements in an array by converting it from base -1

@Neil wdym

@StackMeter let's say I have an array u = [x, y] and I want to compute y - x, I used to do Minus(Pop(u), Pop(u)) but now I can do Base(Negate(1), u) instead. This already saves a byte, plus I don't need to assign to u if this is the only remaining use.

10:32 AM
@StackMeter base conversion of a two element array [a,b] is just -1*a + b

oh
that's smart

10:52 AM
Breaking news: Jyxal can now add two numbers!

What's Jyxal?
I know what Vyxal is, but Jyxal is yet to appear anywhere. New Vyxal variant?

Javascript implementation of Vyxal. Work in progress.

Just gave me an idea for a CMC
CMC: Write an interpreter for a language, in that language.

@RecursiveCo. Javascript, 4 bytes: eval

@RecursiveCo. APL:

10:59 AM
"chunkybanana". Great name, I'm a little disappointed that you didn't change your codegolf username to chunkybanana

"A username" is better :p
@Lyxal What's the default arity for a lambda if none is given, and can lambdas have wildcard arity (*)?
This is great

hello everyone

Why? Is it the equivalent of Arnauld?

@RecursiveCo. python exec

@RecursiveCo. Worse.

11:09 AM
xnor?
@Wasif I know it's not very interesting, but it's a CMC

@RecursiveCo. what equivalent?

@RecursiveCo. Deusovi is Puzzling's version of Dennis

@cairdcoinheringaahing Worse.

I wasn't around when Dennis was answering questions, so can't say

I hope someone answers this in Java where you get no exec

11:10 AM
(it says on his profile that he last logged in in July of last year

It's the equivalent of answering perfectly in every single language here.

@Ausername Who is worse than who?

3 mins ago, by A username
This is great
Context

CMQ: what users should be banned from CGCC you think (fun CMQ don't be serious)

As a JavaScript golfer, definitely Arnauld.

11:12 AM
@Wasif All users that answer that CMQ.

(if it's serious I would say no one, obviously.)
So I'm supposed to be banned?

@RecursiveCo. yeah :P

Sounds right

@Adám including you

@Wasif Me, I'm just too good at golfing, it isn't fair for the rest of y'all :P

11:13 AM
You're a Jelly golfer and I'm not a Jelly golfer, so no worries about you ninjaing me

As a pythonist, I would say hyper-neutrino gets banned (Because of speed, xnor answers slowly)

@RecursiveCo. tsh is worse
Yeah I'd ban caird

Sort of, but he answers slightly slower than Arnauld

For Vyxal I hope @Ausername gets banned

Clearly we just ban everyone :P

11:16 AM
:57827958

Lyxal's better, I've just got 150 answers

> :57827958

@cairdcoinheringaahing who's gonna answer then

Not working?

@cairdcoinheringaahing Move to codicact, then have the same problem

11:17 AM
@Wasif Challenges just get posted as CMCs :P

who knows

@cairdcoinheringaahing I read that, I'm scrolling through the transcript, but no idea :p

i think if we brute force all combinations of the puzzle words we might get a valid sentence

11:23 AM
Doubt it - ae isn't a word, neither is jd

Might be something to do with osabie, but it has horrible docs...

If i search that puzzle on google i get pretty weird results
maybe it is some words from 05AB1E dictionary?

Maybe, but its docs are impossible to understand :p

i can understand its docs easily

@Ausername 1 and I honestly don't know

11:27 AM
@lyxal Ok
thanks

@cairdcoinheringaahing did you know that if you came over here for work, you can stay for 3 years without having to do farm work

@lyxal Interesting, but why do I need to know this?

@cairdcoinheringaahing eh just in case you wanted to know

The redwolf hivemind is coming.

11:29 AM
its funny that when run the puzzle as code in osabie results 0 and in jelly it is 1

@lyxal Fair enough :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Seeing as how we just worked out a trade deal with y'all I thought you'd be interested

I don't really follow UK news tbh
Gets very depressing very fast

@Ausername is that a normal or b255 string?

@cairdcoinheringaahing UK FTFY

11:31 AM
@lyxal b255 I thinkl

@Ausername crap
Don't tell me the base compression is broken again

No, we're just trying to figure out makonede's puzzle
Nice job fixing SCCs again

@Ausername but you said you compressed something
What did you compress?

So, I took makonede's text, ran øD on it, removed spaces and tried executing it.

Oh
Oh thank goodness
Phew

11:34 AM
What did you think?
Btw:
43 mins ago, by A username
Breaking news: Jyxal can now add two numbers!

@Ausername For a moment then I thought you b255 compressed the text and it was uncompressed incorrectly
@Ausername I saw. Well done!

Because I finally got implicit input working
@lyxal Nope, it's all good.

@Ausername because it wouldn't be the first time there's been problems with b255 strings lol

@Ausername oo very nice

I've decided to make arity handling happen at call time, so the only problem is how to get it when it's call time. Oh well, I'll figure out how tomorrow.

1:04 PM
> It's not a duplicate because the last one was

... lol

@cairdcoinheringaahing the spam continues

@Wasif Everyone. Then someone will be forced to fork Axtell :P

@Wasif for a meme, everyone with a strictly higher average score in Python than me

@Wasif i don't even post that often in python do I?

1:10 PM
Wasif's just eliminating you before you get better

getting a python answer out isn't really hard for me. sure i'll get my bytecount halved by dingledooper or xnor but it's way more fun to just try taking it on in jelly
i mean i'll instead get my bytecount halved by caird or bubbler or jonathan or nick :p

I generally golf in Jelly because its more "thought-provoking" than Python :P

idc about other langs, but u don't touch my Python

Makes me think more, because I'm always convinced there is some way to remove a byte :P

I don't golf in pythons because I prefer to do my golfing outside of a dangerous snake

1:16 PM
same, for bad breath reasons

i don't get it

I just looked up Python in DDG in a private window, and I still got results for the language, not the snake. Should I be worried, or is the language just searched for more than the snake?
Python is a genus of constricting snakes in the Pythonidae family native to the tropics and subtropics of the Eastern Hemisphere.The name Python was proposed by François Marie Daudin in 1803 for non-venomous flecked snakes. Currently, 10 python species are recognized as valid taxa.Three formerly considered python subspecies have been promoted, and a new species recognized. == Taxonomy == The generic name Python was proposed by François Marie Daudin in 1803 for non-venomous snakes with a flecked skin and a long split tongue.In 1993, seven python species were recognized as valid taxa. On the basis...

@NewPosts \$I_n = 7\$, as with all formula

@user no

1:20 PM
@NewPosts Appropriate close reason?

Whoops

Doesn't matter that it recommends SO

math would instantly close this too... this doesn't belong on SE in the current state

Thought it was misleading, so ichose a custom reason :/

1:21 PM
i just close with the default reason and leave a comment :P

@NewPosts No butter?

or in this case, that but in reverse order, hence why three people got to close vote

@NewPosts Wolfram

that's not a very nice formula

noooo
tried to flag but it didn't give me a helpful flag

1:27 PM
?
are you sure about that

yes

I personally marked your flag as helpful...

I flagged the off-topic post seconds before it was deleted
wait it regirstered now

check your flag history and the feedback

thanks
also one more thing - how to find the index of a list in a list of lists

1:29 PM
indexOf?

list.index?

1:39 PM
I see now

(position list list-of-lists :test #'equal)

nib?

@StackMeter I'm assuming this is a CMC where any language can participate :P
@user no, that was common lisp

Oh okay

I just saw the post by the mod, glad to see SQL hate isn't just local to here
@Wezl I want rare lisp now

1:42 PM
Why the colon before :test? Is that a default argument something?
@StackMeter Think that's an SE employee

@user that's a keyword argument

Gotta look those up

the default is #'eql, which tests list equality by pointer equality IIRC

Also, why the colon before the 'equal atom?

@user that's syntactic sugar for (function equal), because CL is a lisp-2, where there are separate function and variable namespaces

1:43 PM
@user either way, SQL has been dunked on by SE

@user Sorry, not default argument, I meant optional parameter (which keyword arguments seem similar to?)

(so it's not really close to 'equal. It's the same as equal in scheme)

@StackMeter I mean, who likes SQL? :P
@Wezl Oh, that makes more sense

@user yeah, they're basically the same but with a better system than say, python :)

>(

1:45 PM
@user I prefer common lisp
Though I'm angling for an upgrade to uncommon lisp if you know what I mean

I prefer rare lisp

@user Sorry, I meant hash, I need more sleep
@cairdcoinheringaahing StackMeter made that joke already :P

Rare > uncommon :P

5 mins ago, by StackMeter
@Wezl I want rare lisp now
Ninja'd :P

@user I see no colon

1:47 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing it's common as in "shared", not "not rare"

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ time has no meaning

common lisp is an attempt to get different lisp communities to agree, but unfortunately even common lisp is pretty rare now :\

Thith ith a common lithp, whetheas shis is a rathe shisp
@cairdcoinheringaahing Merriam-Webster would like a word with you :P

#'eql is a bad default

1:50 PM
@user i recognise no authority other than the becktionary

@Wezl (GFDL source)

@user reason being?

@cairdcoinheringaahing I submit to Beck, then :P
@StackMeter Checking pointers is annoying. It won't tell you if two objects with the same properties are equal :/

@user then just use == or some equlas statement

1:53 PM
???

It can't be hard to check if two items are the same

I was talking about the choice of a default for :test in the position function above

@user no I don't understand

@StackMeter javascript would like to have a word with you

So would PHP :P

2:00 PM
um, just go through every item and check if they are the same
and two items are the same if their binary values are the same
ez

those are mutually exclusive

and types
@Wezl which are?

@Wezl (without hash consing and stuff)

@hyper-neutrino === wants to: know your location

2:03 PM
looks really painful. xd

it's basically trurning regex into a directed DFA graph i think

@Wezl Nicely done

Honestly, I was surprised he wasn't a mod on MSE sooner :P

2:14 PM
> some may assume he was one of them already

I am not sure exactly why but last week they decided they needed a new MSE mod and asked for nominations :P

Well, now he gets the pleasure of dealing with my many MM flags :P

2 days ago, by Redwolf Programs
Let's just put all of the SE mods in charge of their respective countries :p
@hyper-neutrino Perhaps because of ^ :P

I threw in my name for nomination just cuz why not even though I only hit 2k rep and I legit called in TL "time for Glorfindel to get his 6th diamond" xD

2:18 PM
it has already begun; it's too late now :P

I for one welcome our Dutch overlords. At the very least, we know they're good moderators :P

ah, that xD

@hyper-neutrino That question's a great place to farm some rep :P

jeez how did rene get 9 upvotes already

2:26 PM
9 users upvoted the answer

oh, really? I didn't know that's how votes worked, thanks!

@user Except for the dude who FGITWed it, said basically nothing and is now at +2/-2 :P

we could learn a thing or two from how they handle FGITW /hj

@hyper-neutrino You're welcome :). Please subscribe for more useful answers.

Glorfindel has a gold badge on every site he's got an account on, aside from the 2 most recent sites on the network :P

2:31 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing is it Fanatic

On most, yes :P

i knew it
easy golds and silvers to pad out your account with
it's big brain

Of course, he has accounts on over 100 sites on the network, and Fanatic does require more than just a quick check on the site
So he does actually have to visit those sites long enough each and every day to register as a visit

or you could run a script, i haven't heard explicitly that that's forbidden :p

Those generally don't work
OSP logs into main, but is there so briefly that it never registers long enough for Fanatic

2:38 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing how long is that

A couple of minutes usually works

multiple tabs, gooooooooooooooooooo

I think I'm pretty close to Enthusiast on RPG because I usually read questions from there from the HNQ

i just keep my profile tab open in a pinned tab on three sites currently and reload it every day (just to be sure) and it works fine :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing IIRC Glorfindel has some scripts running, which as a side effect give the Fanatic badge
IIRC the flag dashboard script

2:45 PM
I stand corrected then :P

i should get myself one of those
get a fanatic badge on every single site lol
