ಠ_ಠ. That's why we should all use symbolic number types.
apparently SE can tell that i stick to a very strict challenge format
@Mr.Xcoder First off, eww. You should add spaces to make it more readable: (1/2 + 1/3 + 1/6 == 1)
Second off
>>> from decimal import Decimal as D
>>> D(1)/D(2) + D(1)/D(3) + D(1)/D(6) == D(1)
or even better, use fraction.Fraction
fractions are objectively better than decimals
...for most numbers anyways
Or even better, use Wolfram Mathematica
Or mathics if you're poor
wtf, no websites (even SO) work for me, just like I had no internet. Except this chat O.o
7:09 PM
@DJMcMayhem First off, eww. You should not use REPL. Second off, too many Ds :p
@Mr.Xcoder ...why is REPL bad
@Mr.Xcoder REPL is fine for demonstrations
what did REPL's do to you
@labela--gotoa That happens to me sometimes when my school's firewall does stupid shit. It's because you're prevented from opening new connections, but the connection to chat.se can remain open.
I needed to complain about something :p
7:10 PM
On a random note, it irks me that the election page rounds down the Nomination Period Begins time. A day ago, it said starts in a day. An hour ago, it said Starts in an hour. Now it says 50 minutes.
So basically, 1 day, 23 hours and 59 minutes == 1 day
@Pavel I've got no firewall. And I can reconnect to chat, it still works.
CMC: write python code that makes every int default to instances of fractions.Fraction
is it even possible?
:-) Nominations begin in less than an hour. Good luck to everyone that wants to participate and may the best two candidates win!
maybe some ctypes sorcery
Wasn't there a chat for language design?

@DJMcMayhem I never write readable code :p
linters and beautifiers
amazing tools, y'know?
I've just started writing a (practical) language like Mathematica, but with science-related built-ins instead, which is transpiled to Python :)
Might try to make its source readable
7:15 PM
@Mr.Xcoder That sounds like Mathematica with extra steps
i think attache is written in python? nope nvm it's in ruby
Mathematica has all the science-related built-ins too
Well, it depends on which built-ins you want to have.
I can't think of a built-in I'd want for practical use that Mathematica doesn't have, honestly. Any examples?
7:18 PM
Oh wow, nothing works for me rn except SE chats (but at least they started working)
For a while I was even unable to send messages
But I did recieve them xD
Is your DNS funky?
everything is correct
I disabled windows defender
Try pinging, and then google.com - if you can reach one and not the other, look at your DNS settings.
Ok, here are some extreme ones that are not particularly useful, but that aren't included in Mathematica AFAIK: SchwarzschildRadius, KineticEnery, PotentialEnery, ElasticPotentialEnergy SpecificHeatCapacity (this is actually part of ThermodynamicData, but meh)
@Οurous doesn't work
ooh, google started working
7:27 PM
The official mod election chat room has been created.
So right now, only chat.SE and google.com work
Windows says im online
And my bro seems to have the same issue
the same wifi
restarted router; still the same
Mobile networks on my phone don't work too. Is it a weather issue or what?!
@totallyhuman You better ask Grace about ads here :P
(I assume that's what you wanted)
what the heck is going on?
@Mr.Xcoder oh hey i didn't notice they're here
When will the ads actually be live? It seems that I'm still getting 2017 ads... — totallyhuman yesterday
7:42 PM
@Mr.Xcoder nonono, that's not this what I meant
I reset my antenne, now its working
@labela--gotoa Oh, it was your internet you were complaining about?
@GraceNote ^^^^
@totallyhuman I don't know the exact time, the links for all the threads across the network were fed last Friday.
@Mr.Xcoder yeah
But since it's 71 posts that have to individually be hooked up in a process that I don't know the precise amount of time it takes per, I can't give an estimate
oh ok thanks
7:45 PM
what is the first thing you notice about this keyboard?
the letters
hm ok a friend said the weird circle-playback-thing so just checking
give design plz
or should I say, it's using the ABCDEF layout
@Riker It looks the same as my keyboard except for the giant circle, at a glance
7:46 PM
@Riker that was the first thing i noticed too
The huge circle and the 6 buttons under it. They should never be aligned like that, I hate it
They should be aligned in 2 rows, not 2 columns.
@GraceNote Since you are much higher in the SE hierarchy, I have another question: Do you know how MathJax is turned on/off? We seem to have reached a consensus that we want to have MathJax back, and I guess you know best who we should contact and ask for it, or just wait. (PS: Sorry if I'm bothering you with too many questions :P)
But I mean, like any Thinkpad looks like my laptop at a glance, I imagine the same goes for any Dell keyboard
it was really just a random trash keyboard I had and decided to fix up
7:47 PM
then i noticed it was a dell keyboard
@Mr.Xcoder 's not a bother
then i noticed the letters after that
@Riker home-end horizontal, pageup-down vertical ಠ_ಠ
@betseg technically custom-made so I will require at least 500 IRL reps to manufacture another
@betseg what's wrong with that?
@Riker it's very wrong
7:49 PM
@Riker i said "give design" to @ Grace
Home-end navigate horizontal, page up-down navigate vertical, right?
I've never used a keyboard with a pg up/dwn key layout before
except ctrl-home/end
been years since I used one with a numpad even
7:49 PM
@labela--gotoa home-end do navigate vertical
@betseg I mean, my current Dell has that already so at some point in the past many years I just got adjusted to it
@Riker I don't use a numpad too, but edit buttons should be in 2 rows, 3 columns, not reverse
@betseg No, except with cntrl
it works that way on linux ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
7:50 PM
On the topic of design - I don't have any kind of update, positive or negative, to give on the subject
@GraceNote not trying to be rude but imo no update is more or less negative
@GraceNote "Design in 6-8 weeks" ~~ Grace Note, Nov 1st 2018
btw did you know, in chrome, you can rearrange tabs with Ctrl+Shift+PageUp/Down
@Poke it could be worse, like "whoops you get ungraduated now"
has that happened before
7:52 PM
@Poke I won't deny that
Don't jinx it.
@betseg doesn't work for me
@totallyhuman u N g R a D u A t I o n
when did that happen?
7:53 PM
@Blue being ungraduated? hasn't ever
@Riker no don't
@totallyhuman ok
@GraceNote Do you have any insight as to why it might be taking so long? Is it a lack of resources on SE's end? etc
I'm guessing SE would be glad to see ppcg to migrate to ppcg v2
7:54 PM
@GraceNote I see, so? Any advice on what we shall do next?
@Poke probably it's just that it's pretty hard to come up with a design for us
and there's other sites that need one (even if they're graduated after)
just guessing tho
then again, we do bring a fair amount of traffic
whoever is managing the ppcg userscript came up with /something/
7:56 PM
@Poke it was not liked by some people
if the other person misspelled is it still ninja'd
@Riker I'm certain that will also be the case with the eventual design from SE
that is true

what was actually the reason this chat was named like this?
@labela--gotoa 19th hole on a golf course is the local bar
Any delays are centered purely on procedural and method changes going on, and nothing to do with PPCG itself.
Q: Let's think of a creative name for our chatroom

DoorknobI'm hoping we're nearing the end of beta soon, but even if we aren't, our chatroom name is so bland. "Code Golf." @GraceNote Thanks! This is actually very helpful
7:58 PM
@Poke 's why I dug up the post
^ I just realized that looks a lot like a thumbs up
(the music note)
> nomination period began 35 secs ago
8:03 PM
@Riker The Home/End/PgUp/PgDn/Insert/Delete group is vertical and the arrow keys are squashed into the main partof the keyboard.
^ I never saw that that's weird (pt 2)
ow so many pins
@DJMcMayhem time to unpin the ad one? it's been 1 wk
:shrug: idk
8:05 PM
Also Best Of already seems kinda dead
I just had an intresting idea: A King Of The Hill contest based around a simple AI tower defense, with the programs competing against each-other to last the longest
I'll go flesh it out, because that could be fun
We have more people willing to give rewards than categories.
lol I'm missing 8 reputation to nominate myself. But that doesn't mean anything, since I don't want being a moderator.
Haha evil laugh I lost my SO consecutive days streak
@labela--gotoa are you gonna nominate yourself for the official troll election? :D
8:07 PM
Issue with that is it'd be really hard to balance.
@flawr what is this and where does one join
@moonheart08 how so?
@Mr.Xcoder I lost my fanatic badge in half on SO... :(
@moonheart08 I recommend sandboxing
@flawr haha, nice idea XD
@Riker Well, it's essentially a tower defense based around lasting the longest; You don't want it to last forever :P. And i know @Mr.Xcoder. I'm trying to flesh out a general idea first.
8:08 PM
@Riker Question collection starts November 1st. Nomination starts 6-8 weeks later.
@flawr ah ok yeah definitely

I thought about creating a "language pyramid" challenge, where you need to create polyglot printing the language name and every shorter language names... Is it dupe? Is it nice idea? :p
Ex: `C
Ruby` etp...
Where C would only print C, C# will print both, C++ will print 3 names... etp
@labela--gotoa answer-chaining?
sounds cool actually
I would updoot
@Riker Didn't thought about answer-chaining, but that could be a good idea
But it will end fast, I suppose
8:12 PM
@GraceNote Why don't we as users get to design our site? I'm sure we'd be able to golf the heck out of the css files.
People will start creating new languages to fit the length perfectly XD
@labela--gotoa would have to be answer-chaining
@labela--gotoa illegal :p
not really feasible to do it as code-golf or smth
oh, nvm, I see
each answer would have a number of languages
I thought it was supposed to print the other answers's langs
(which makes no sense)
answer-chaining or not?
@labela--gotoa Iava Development Kit?
@labela--gotoa IMO, yes
start it with python/ruby/etc. (wouldn't recommend C but that's just me)
8:15 PM
@flawr The straight answer is because under the current system of design, that's not how it's implemented.
@GraceNote how is it implemented?
@Riker But that has to be a pyramid, you can't start it with Python, I guess? :p
@Riker Implemented in a procedural sense, not a mechanical sense. It's currently implemented that we have a designer make a design and that gets added.
Maybe that wouldn't have to be a Pyramid, but I'm not sure
8:17 PM
@labela--gotoa ah, I see what you mean. yeah then start with java :p
@Riker Rather with any 1 char language... I think...
@labela--gotoa I'd probably go with pyramid if you do non-answer chaining
but for an answer chaining one I don't think a pyramid is needed/required
both would be quite interesting challenges tho
@labela--gotoa fwiw, challenges are "rosetta-stone" if the winning criterion is most languages
but I wouldn't have anything against the need to sort them by name...
@Riker But isn't that the requirement for challanges?
@labela--gotoa no, polyglot is just for ones that include that as a feature
not for winning criterion
@trichoplax unpin the other two then?
@Riker So what's the final choice? Pyramid? Answer-chaining or "rosetta stone" as you called it?
@Riker That was the reason :) Done now
@labela--gotoa post both :p
If the goal is to un-clutter, might as well unstar them too
8:23 PM
@Riker Fine, thanks
But sure it's not a dupe? :p
sandbox first pl0x
but yeah I don't think it's a dupe
can't search rn tho
I'm outta here now o/
sounds a bit trivial for a polyglot
codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/102370/… Similar, this could be enough for a close-vote.
Imo nah since that doesn't do strings
Less ability for math tricks / like python division
8:26 PM
Still, it doesn't make a big difference
it's really similar and often even more different challenges get close-voted
But the pyramid challenge isn't a dupe
@Randal'Thor The "fancy" custom themes have cost in terms of design resources and fragility. On the design side, we haven't been able to support custom themes for a long time. So, few sites have them. The goal here is to create a more flexible and sustainable system. The cost is that the few sites with beautiful themes will have to change. The upside is that the majority of sites with a stock theme will get an improvement. And, the overall SE Network will be less fragile and be able to absorb new features and updates better. More details to come. — Joe Friend Jan 9 at 20:50
(for those wondering why we don't have a design yet)
8:53 PM
@trichoplax Thanks, I just got the Caucus badge! :P

I forgot you existed
Just so long as you don't onebox, it's fine :P
8:56 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing You're welcome :)
@moonheart08 I know that there are programming languages which use a similar rule as your challenge for the pointer, but I'm not sure is there a challenge for it. For me, it looks pretty fun.
@labela--gotoa Languages like that were my inspiration :)
Besides, who doesn't want to make a program do "basketball"? :P

you have to self-nom for these

It was a parody of a message, if someone can call it a parody: p
@Riker yeah I didn't have a better word
I refuse to vote for DJ. He only has 36/40 candidate score. Clearly we must only elect mods with 37/40

@cairdcoinheringaahing Good luck finding 2 :P
Last I remember, I'm in third place behind mego and Martin
If we could clone Dennis, we'd not need more elections (assuming cloning world with age, which is false)
@moonheart08 Well, for me looks like a good challenge.

@DJMcMayhem Seriously though, I cannot emphasise this enough:

@DJMcMayhem You're one of the best (if not the best) reviewers on the site, you're almost always sensible when it comes to dealing other users and you're a brilliant RO. I think you'd be a great mod
@Zacharý Maybe we can if we use TwoDucks. esolangs.org/wiki/TwoDucks
Time joke. It's a time joke.
Besides, we all know there's an esoteric language for everything
@cairdcoinheringaahing Thanks! That means a lot to me :)

I'm getting close to Strunk and White, finally. :D
@DJMcMayhem I mentioned V, didn't I:p
Nah, it was the "DJ" that summoned him this time :P
Also, I realise that I'm way too late, and I get the feeling that not many people here care about it, but I just finished watching the Super Bowl! My team won (no spoiler)!
Or the fact that I just nominated
@cairdcoinheringaahing I care! That was a really exciting game
I'm surprised you watch the NFL, don't you live in the UK?
9:30 PM
Yes. I only recently started liking American Football, so have only seen the Super Bowl but :P
Haha, well you picked the right team to cheer for lol
It's like a more violent version of rugby :P
@DJMcMayhem Yep :P My dog got terrified when the game was over cause I made so much noise :D
I'm just an American who doesn't care
9:32 PM
Huh. Me and Dj both like climbing, American football and code golf. Clearly we are the same person :P
If I claim DJ is my sock, do I get his rep/mod nomination? :D
@cairdcoinheringaahing Legally, yes. :p
Ok then. Vote Caird McCoinHam for mod! :D
Okay, V you later
@cairdcoinheringaahing We won't believe you until you've posted 200 answers in V. ;)
9:36 PM
Give me a few years :P I haven't even posted 200 answers :P
Does anyone here know how to program ALGOL?
@DJMcMayhem don't forget to update your moderator sites in metasmoke for autoflagging
@cairdcoinheringaahing if anything, you're their sock
although I think it'll do it for you
Hmm, I must depart. Toodles o/

Coincidence, I THINK NOT
So my stats teacher had three XKCD comics on his notes. It was the weirdest thing ever, as he also referenced Hee-Man before. Guess teachers other than Dennis have a life

I think he also said"much bad" once as well

Why do you keep saying that?
At least he didn't say"What's going on"

@quartata If I win :P
Good point though, I'll try to remember that
@quartata too much jargon
9:52 PM
@DJMcMayhem lol
do you seriously expect not to win
I didn't say that :P but I don't want to make any assumptions
that's a fair point, Alex could run and get two diamonds instead of one
If that was possible, it'd be Dennis
no it would be alex
since all the newer people wouldn't konw that alex was ever a mod
and they'd re-reelect him
@quartata I'm putting my money on that outcome
9:56 PM
That's a burn (I think)
not really
just a statement of undisputable fact
Plot twist: moderator status is governed by diamonds mod 2
