8:00 PM
"X doesn't work!" 'Try Y instead.' "I'm sorry, that's clearly wrong because X doesn't work."

@DJMcMayhem The user wanted you to integrate it for them.

@DJMcMayhem what would you expect? It's SO after all

@DJMcMayhem Clearly the correct answer is "Try X without Y"

@DJMcMayhem Do the same as them. "Oh. A completely different approach would be Y".

> I answered a question on SO
there's your first mistake

8:01 PM
Such ping, much wow

DJ, should we ping you like this from now on?

@AdmBorkBork Hey - Stack Overflow is useful.

@cairdcoinheringaahing Yes, that's much better :P

It's just the script-kiddies, help-vampires and lazy programmers who cause the problems with Stack Overflow.

@wizzwizz4 Isn't that like 98% of the demographic? :P

8:04 PM
I mean I can't think of many cases where that would be useful lol

@DJMcMayhem Yes, but that's the 98% of users below 100 reputation.

@DJMcMayhem ninja'd before I even typed it

@wizzwizz4 Yes, but unfortunately, they can misinterpret "I have no idea where to even start" for "Help-vampire" (which I've encountered a couple of times)

@DJMcMayhem You're popular this hour. You get many pings consecutively.

9 pings currently on my screen

8:05 PM
@DJMcMayhem Then clear them :P

@DJMcMayhem My screen is big so I see more.

Also, you complained about SO, that's basically a "Ping me please" here :P

Stack Overflow - Where Developers Learn, Share, & Build Careers

@Mego Even Retrocomputing is starting to get that. YANA.

Programming Puzzles and Code Golf - Where SO rejects go to learn programming
8

8:07 PM
haha
I've seen at least three questions like "why does calling a function not work" -> because you need brackets

Stack Overlow - Where nice users try to help lazy programmers, and other lazy users try to help the lazy users. The lazy users always win. /s

Also, DJ, I'm catching up to you on Socratic. I'm currently at 65, you're at 96.

@HyperNeutrino Stack Overflow - Where Developers Learn, Share & Beg for Careers.

lol
Stack Overflow - Where developers give help, noobs copy code, and nobody learns /s

Who knew that insulting a chat room host would get you multiple stars :P

Anonymous
8:09 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing s/SO/CR

Retrocomputing - Where obsolete programmers go to pretend that their knowledge is still relevant. /jk

I would add Nobody gives a damn so getting +10 is hard as hell unless you create a list comprehension for a newbie
3

@wizzwizz4 And is moderated by someone still in school :P Makes sense

I usually get reputation in batches of +25 on SO because if the person actually bothers to check if they got an answer it will work (because I always make sure that you can just copy-paste my code directly in place of yours) then they upvote and accept

@cairdcoinheringaahing I literally did that...

8:11 PM
Is chatexchange development still active?

otherwise it just goes ignored for eternity lol :(

@SocraticPhoenix Same here :P

I forget how I found this place but I'm pretty sure it wasn't by getting rejected from SO :P

@SocraticPhoenix That's what I did...

@cairdcoinheringaahing I'm not even sure I can post questions on SO...

8:11 PM
@wizzwizz4 Does APL qualify as retrocomputing? It is over 50yo.

@SocraticPhoenix I got unbanned after asking for help in TNB with fixing old questions.

@wizzwizz4 lol I'm too lazy to fix old questions though...

Hey I think I remember somebody coming into TNB and asking for SO question help... maybe it was you? idk :P

@Adám The application of APL to old systems counts. The language itself doesn't because Retrocomputing isn't Stack Overflow.

@Adám Isn't it still in development, though?

8:13 PM
Although stuff about the language that isn't SO stuff might be on-topic; it depends what it is.

lol I found a -2 accepted answer

@wizzwizz4 Heh, I have an APL\360 running on an IBM/360 hardware emulator on my laptop…

@HyperNeutrino There are a lot lower score accepted answers than that.

oh huh
ok

The best answers are the ones which are accepted and upvoted but totally wrong...

8:14 PM
@Adám Is that to ensure backwards compatibility?
Are you going to polyfill new features to APL\360?

@HyperNeutrino There is a -23 accepted answer on SO

oh god

@wizzwizz4 No, for fun. But yes, pretty much all APL\360 code can run on modern systems. In fact, the only things that don't work are calls to system-specific services.

Well, it would take 8 downvotes to not profit from an accept

@Adám Calls to system-specific services would be on-topic on Retrocomputing, by the way.

8:15 PM
@wizzwizz4 :-D That would be up to IBM to do.
Dyalog doesn't run on System z (today's version of /360), but we do run on AIX.

@Mr.Xcoder I've only found -20.

Oooh, looks like APL\360 is finally becoming obsolete; I don't think it can run on a z14 from this year, only on z13 from last year!

Havibg trouble finding the link, on mobile

@Mr.Xcoder There's one about DOM reference equality -20 iirc.

8:20 PM
lol

Also, there's this:

oh rip that person

I wonder if that person has hit negative repcap :P

@Mr.Xcoder That exists?

8:22 PM
@HyperNeutrino Well, they work for SE, so they can (theoretically) change the code to give them all the rep back

@wizzwizz4 I don't think so.

It's on Meta

@cairdcoinheringaahing They don't need to. They have this post

@AdmBorkBork you do own rep on meta
(Meta Stack Exchange only)

Why on earth is this a tag?

8:23 PM
Ah, I didn't see it was mother meta

@cairdcoinheringaahing For lolz probably

@cairdcoinheringaahing Because they mail you stuff

@cairdcoinheringaahing Top users when a site graduates get stuff

I've gotten SE swag before
That's the official term

well technically yes I guess :P

8:24 PM
Which is funny, because swag originated from conventions and stands for Stuff We All Get

I have an ELL shirt

I haven't claimed my mod swag yet.

Hahahahahahaha. I cannot tell you how hard I'm laughing right now

As you seem to know more than me, when is swag earned (cc @DJMcMayhem)

8:29 PM
@Mr.Xcoder 100k rep.
Mods get a mod hat.

Network or site?

@Mr.Xcoder Or when a site graduates and you're one of the top 72 users at graduation time

@wizzwizz4 ^^?

I can just imagine Dennis walking into a maths lecture with his mod swag on :P

The nice thing about PPCG is even though I don't have an insane amount of rep, I'm still top 100 :P

8:32 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Afaik it's just a hat.

simply because there aren't really many people with over 200 rep (people who come to this site and then don't stay)

@cairdcoinheringaahing @_@ indeed that would be fascintaing... I am literally starring at that message for like, 45 seconds

@HyperNeutrino And the only one without a gold badge :(

lol
soon, I tell you, soon
I'm 83.7% to gold

> 837/1000 score
Everyone mass upvote Hyper

8:33 PM
._.
if OEIS challenge were code-golf I'd have it by now (lol not actually) (I think I've said this a million and three times already)

I had ~1 gold badge when you were first complaining you didn't have any, now I have 4 and you still don't have any @HyperNeutrino

lol
I think of all people so far you were the one who overtook me the best :P
I'm too lazy to answer anything I can't Jelly/Python/Proton FGITW nowadays so I get like 50 rep a day lol

Thanks :-)

@HyperNeutrino I get less than 1 rep a day. :-D

@HyperNeutrino fun fact: I got +45 today

8:36 PM
@wizzwizz4 lol nice :P
@Mr.Xcoder fun fact: my only "achievement" today is getting a tag badge lol

@HyperNeutrino Go for Electorate, it's an easy gold badge to get

CMP: What is your average rep/day? (total rep / total number of days spend on PPCG)

@HyperNeutrino Overall on the network is probably around 3, but I haven't posted many non-sandboxed challenges and I'm terrible at answers.

(Ignore the +155 and +200 from the last couple of days)... Godmmit Dennis overtook me in the quarter leaderboard

@HyperNeutrino "only"... "tag badge"... Does not compute.

@DJMcMayhem Days spent or total days?

Total days

@wizzwizz4 lol well I get those all the time (jkjk I actually don't)
@DJMcMayhem oh then not exact dupe but still pretty close

@HyperNeutrino I've never got a tag badge on any site.

8:38 PM
It's not a challenge, just a poll

lol, today is my 800th day here

@wizzwizz4 Anyway it's particularly easy on PPCG

Retrocomputing's the only site that thinks I have a chance of getting one, but it's the one site on which I don't need one. :-)

I don't know how many days I've spent here.

8:38 PM
Mine is 31.4

24.155 rep / day

@Mr.Xcoder Define "easy". ;-)

That's kinda cool
pi * 10 :P

actually nvm my activity log goes back to before my deletion

@DJMcMayhem 15.7. A lot more than I expected

8:39 PM
Apparently today is my 1,122'th day here

Hmm, I wonder what'll happen first, I overtake Hyper's rep, or Hyper gets a gold badge?

Can I just assume that my first day here was the first time I got a rep change? I don't know how else to figure it out

IDK how many days I spent here, but I will take an approximation: joined 1yr,1mo->~400 days

@HyperNeutrino Give me a sec - I'll tell you a way as soon as I decompress it.

@cairdcoinheringaahing well it will take you at least about 40 days to catch up to me assuming I don't start losing rep rapidly
@wizzwizz4 oh ok :P

8:40 PM
(BTW I have been lurkibg for the first 4 months)

@HyperNeutrino You can see every day that you've visited in your profile where it tells you the number of consecutive days

wait are you using the person in front of me and the person behind me?

@HyperNeutrino Clicky

@DJMcMayhem except I got deleted halfway through that

@DJMcMayhem can you please take a look at mine, on mobile so it doesn't show?

8:41 PM
@wizzwizz4 oh ok
anyway brb o/
i'll be back in like 10-20 minutes actually

Ive got to go here as well o/

I've got to go - a person wants me to prove my speech synthesis ability.

Bye bye Siri wizzwizz o/

@Mr.Xcoder Actually, I don't think I can. I think you can only see your own

@DJMcMayhem oh shoot. Anyway, I think I have ~400 days so ~36 rep/day
Will take a look tomorrow to make sure the result is correct

8:48 PM
My first rep change was +20 on Sep 3 2015
today is Oct 19 2017
That's a difference of 731 (leap year) + (30 - 3) + 19 days
so 777 days
LOL what a great number; 13200/777=16.988 rep/day

eyes are slowly closing gtg o/

bye o/
I feel like it's time for me to dig up an ancient unanswered challenge and go answer it
Last time I did that was decently successful

hello

I got a superzoom camera today
(birthday present)

9:03 PM
cool

It is so zoom
If you look close you can see my super pun. Just don't zoom in too far

I don't see any pun, just the strange kerning between z and o which is oddly compressed.

NO KERNING :P

whoa what the heck?
I think I just triggered a keyboard command in SE
I didn't know those existed lol
I did not know SE had keyboard commands
wait I think that might be the gradscript actually

yeah those exist. I'm too lazy to use them though. ? is the help page and that's all I know :p

9:13 PM
lol
oh yeah I guess I never found it before because I just got a userscript called "automatically enable keyboard shortcuts" because i think it's an option lol
at least the prev/next question shortcuts follow vim movement commands lol
I need to learn these shortcuts lol. eventually I'm going to never use the cursor ever again lol

9:29 PM
anyway gtg o/

anyway gtg o/

10:01 PM
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ hey you stole my good bye message ._. :P

brb o/ lol anyways gtg o/
The most iconic hyper sentence

10:20 PM
lol
rip enlist just died
I say rip too much as well apparently: chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=rip&user=&room=240

@HyperNeutrino wat.

I wonder how many Neutrinoisms there are lol
@ASCII-only yeah I forgot that not all links are just a single function
some are chains of links or even nested chains
(I may have gotten the two terms mixed up)

Well this isn't normal

:|
Congratulations you broke SE

10:26 PM
oh yeah I need to address that comment sometime
:I there's an MSE privilege for 200 rep called "see reduced ads"

@HyperNeutrino oh that's only on meta?

idk
maybe it exists elsewhere

@ATaco pls view icon in sources and screenshot ty

@ATaco It may not be fully done, but is that the start of our design?

10:30 PM
@ATaco Actually... the view is messed up
That is way taller than it should be

Nope: It's a bug involving the new top bar in the Grad script.

so it's getting squished
@ATaco only the grad script?
@ATaco Hyper was using the old topbar though?

Top bar overrides the background image on this particular SE, but grad script goes back and says "Actually, this icon is full size, not a part", so it's rendering the entire iconstrip in the space of a single icon.

@ATaco pls pr ty

Might not be the new top bar, but very much so SE specific.

10:35 PM
I JUST TOOK A PICTURE OF A PLANE
I barely could see it with my eyes
This is cool

I'm adding a load of globals to Funky, because it's severely lacking them.

@ATaco good
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ :| If you used a SLR, good. If you used a phone, you might want your eyes checked :P

(a,b,c)=>[a,b,c].sort()[1] is a surprisingly golfy "clamp" function in Javascript.

what is a clamp function; gets middle element?

@HyperNeutrino clamps value to one between min and max

10:42 PM
@ASCII-only Superzoom camera
SX530 HS

hm ok

Given a number, constrain it to be between two other numbers.
Conveniently, the median of a 3 value list also happens to do this.

@ATaco APL: ⎕⌈⎕⌊⎕

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ :O

@ASCII-only yahh
@ASCII-only ill send pics asap

10:43 PM
ew in Proton it has to be (a,b,c)=>sorted([a,b,c])[1]
which is a whole ONE BYTE LONGER

@ATaco (a,b,c)=>a<b?b:a>c?c:a naive is shorter though :P

hey I think that's a proton polyglot lol
In jelly it's just ṢḊḢ

Problem with Naïve is that is requires min = b , max = c and val=a. That's not how Taco rolls.

CMC: Given a complex number, constrain it to be between two other complex numbers.

10:47 PM
examples pls?

@ASCII-only that photo was taken after sunset and it was off past the mountains ~10-15 miles away

@Adám what metric?
component wise?
or magnitude?

Component-wise. Make it into that rectangle.

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ after sunset O_o

num=3+4i min=1+5i max=7+8i result=3+5i

10:49 PM
@Adám given as a tuple (if complex numbers not builtin?)

@ASCII-only yup. Or even if they are. I believe in permissive I/O.

@ASCII-only Yeah will send pictures of moon if i find it tonight

@Adám min(max(a.real, x.real), b.real)+1j*min(max(a.imag, x.imag), b.imag)
^ i tihnk it works

@Maltysen Yeah, that looks correct, but not very golfy.

> if i find it
@Maltysen :|
@ATaco (...v)=>v.sort()[1]
@Adám what about i_1, j_1, i_2, j_2, i_3, j_3
i values then j values is just cheating so i won't ask about that :P

10:54 PM
I was just going to ask about that :(

MATHMATICAL!

@Adám JS: ([a,x],[b,y],[c,z])=>[a<b?b:a>c?c:a,x<y?y:x>z?z:x]
@ATaco mathmathical?

11:06 PM
Clarity is more important than golfiness right now.

v=globals.math.vars
v.pi = Math.
v.e = Math.
...
I don't find it clear to repeat the same thing over and over ...

v is at the very least not a very clear variable name. :P

@ASCII-only Well it turns out that the moon won't be up tonight :()

my point remains if you call it mathvars instead

> :() the official face of tacoscript

11:08 PM

like that

I thought it was ಠ_ಠ

lol and turns out that everything in Enlist now blows the stack
well time to rollback and start from today morning again

except why is math.sqrt a wrapper on Math.sqrt instead of being like math.max and math.min

No particular reason, I'll fix that.

11:11 PM
see in lua or ruby this would be a lot easier to fix because I could just redefine what calling a list means
(I think)

You can do it in Lua.
(And Funky!)

should I make a room for discussing various king of the hill ideas?

11:15 PM
It passes the object as the first argument.
And stringifying functions doesn't work as expected yet.

oh ok that makes more sense

oh wait s in that case is just like python self
yeknow what I may need to rewrite enlist almost entirely

wait wat

Apparently yeknow is also a Neutrinoism: chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=yeknow&room=240

11:20 PM
why is this differnt

(that's my deleted account)

@HyperNeutrino Of course... nobody else misspells it

:P
anyway gtg o/

Function strings do not have defined functionality yet.
SImple as that.

11:22 PM
@ATaco function strings?

As in, stringifying a function.
But that is now fixed for the next version!

@ATaco that's not the issue I found...
unless it is :/ idk
is that just lambda stringify vs print stringify

Basically, yeah.
If Funky keeps any sort of popularity and doesn't die out, I'll make a room for it.
(But I think most of this interest comes from the fact that it's a little bit strange)

@ATaco *buggy

11:38 PM
Well, yes.
But not all of these 'bugs' are bugs.

11:49 PM
Today I learned about a java IDE called JGrasp. It's so awful I feel like I have to tell people about it. It looks more outdated than vim and it's uglier than hotdog.vim.

He's not lying.

anyways gtg o/ lol rip

@Pavel interface M{static void main(String[]a){int n=0;for(int i=1;++i<101;)n+=i;System.out.print(n);}}

@ASCII-only interface M{static void main(String[]a){int n=0,i=0;for(;++i<101;)n+=i;System.out.print(n);}}

@Pavel *i=0 (oops mistake)

@ATaco Why are there two close buttons tho
Nothing makes sense

One closes tab, one closes window.
(Microsoft Excel 2007)
