3:00 PM
@StepHen Mark the not

Time to design a language where all keywords and literals grow upwards and downwards instead of in the line direction

@Jim It seems like no one created an esolang since then.

This sounds like a fun evening project to draw up

@Mr.Xcoder I'm gonna work on a language this weekend, but I already have a name for it :/

the problem is I suck at JS functions. idk what's even going wrong. this throws TypeError: (intermediate value)(intermediate value)(intermediate value)(...).s is not a constructor

3:05 PM
@StepHen I will make Cthulhu then

Not if I make it first

@CensoredUsername I doubt so.

One can be Cthulhu and one can be Clhuthu

I get the former.

There are plenty of elder gods available

3:06 PM
@CensoredUsername well, it was my idea.

I'm claiming Yog-Sothoth then

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Martin EnderTransposes and Diagonals code-challengesource-layoutmatrix For this challenge, you should write a program or function which outputs the diagonals of a given square matrix. However, if you transpose the rows and columns of your solution's source code, it should instead become a program or functi...

Jim
Let's not make a pantheon of useless languages

uh I'm pretty sure it's too late now to say that

3:09 PM
We already have one @Jim ^

@Jim We're a drop on the ocean xD
2

Jim
And to know that the master of all is upon us. Cthulhu

Or just make a meta-language: first line is the language name, and it runs the rest of the code in that language

metagolfscript is already a thing

@CensoredUsername That's for all golfscript programs, mine is for all languages

3:12 PM
a meta-meta-language it is then

Am I being too hacky in JS by nesting clickables, and using event cancellation?

Jim
Anyway, if a language named Cthulhu is on the verge of being created, it has to be magnificent
Or we will experience the wrath of Cthulhu

@Mr.Xcoder as soon as you get it done, we need to have ~3 people using it for every challenge, no matter how good or bad it is at golfing the challenge

@CensoredUsername :o how. well now I must outgolf you

hi

3:20 PM
@HyperNeutrino Did you really not golf off your spaces 0.o

I haven't been here in a while.

@StepHen I think I did :o
@ckjbgames welcome back :D \o

@ckjbgames welcome back!

@HyperNeutrino You guys know me! :D
I have a question

we've seen answers of yours

3:22 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer indeed
Here's my question:
Does anyone know of a simple C++ JSON library?

@HyperNeutrino You have four spaces on some of your lines, and you only need 2, I think

@StepHen Those are tabs.

I am asking here because it got 3 downvotes immediately on Stack Overflow.

wait no

(rip stackoverflow reputation)

3:22 PM
well they're meant to be >.<

@HyperNeutrino But it's Python 3 right? I was told you can't do that in Python 3

@StepHen context?

@StepHen Indeed >.< Brb, switching to Py2 now

@ckjbgames Mix tabs and spaces for indentation to save bytes, which I think you can do in Python 2 but not in Python 3

@StepHen I think that's right

3:24 PM
@ckjbgames (My extent of Python knowledge is PPCG comments and reading the docs last night)

@StepHen Ask me stuff. I could probably tell you

Simple tip btw @HyperNeutrino, since at the end of the challenge everything is normalized to the maximum value, it doesn't matter what the starting probabilities you assign to the sources are

I learned Python from a kinda crappy book, but Google & I are best friends

@CensoredUsername oh true. whoops >.<

i.e. my solution's probabilities tend to add up to 2*N_sources

3:25 PM
@ckjbgames Well I'm going to write an interpreter for an esolang in Python this weekend, I might take you up on that then

@ckjbgames good news you've got your rep back...btw just asking for a simple C++ JSON library is too broad
or primarily opinion-based

@StepHen i suck at writing interpreters, though
@EriktheOutgolfer How to improve?

Well now it gives div0 errors >.<

@ckjbgames well, provide some context at the very least
that could narrow down the topic

@ckjbgames I can write interpreters, I learned how to write them (in JS and Java) by using a Python tutorial, I just don't really know Python practices yet :P

3:27 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer i'm writing a google autocomplete script in c++... it's sad...
@StepHen I have a really handy construct that is super versatile that you can use.

specifically why you need a simple c++ json library
what do you want to do with it?
you're essentially fetching google autocomplete data and print them?

@EriktheOutgolfer check my question "Google Autocomplete Fun." The URL used gives you JSON data.
@EriktheOutgolfer The top autocomplete result

oh...you want to practice c++ on using internet right?

@EriktheOutgolfer Of a search term given via command line arguments
@EriktheOutgolfer Yes!
my crappy ubuntu computer is updating right now, and i'm too lazy to install mingw on this one, so i can't start writing it right now.

@ckjbgames I can't see deleted questions on so...
@ckjbgames I don't think you'll need mingw (windows stuff)
just g++ should be fine...

3:31 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer I'm just feeling lazy, that's all
@EriktheOutgolfer Happens to the best of us

umm...g++ should be already installed

@EriktheOutgolfer It's on the Ubuntu computer, which is updating
@EriktheOutgolfer G++, that is

how does updating interrupt anything else than apt-related stuff?
@ckjbgames no the command is g++

@EriktheOutgolfer I know that

@HyperNeutrino managed with some black magic to golf mine down to 523 bytes now

3:33 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer It just makes it slower than it already is
@EriktheOutgolfer Updates...
It has an Intel Centrino Duo, a 50 gig hard drive, a screen that could probably cause seizures, and it somehow runs Ubuntu 17.04.

519 bytes now

@CensoredUsername good luck
@CensoredUsername Link me to the challenge?

Can you redefine keywords in Python? I'm assuming not

@StepHen Cool

It's my challenge though so I ain't posting my reference solution
but I can confirm it's doable in 519 characters of python 3 code ;)

3:37 PM
@CensoredUsername You can after you get some answers in, if you want to (aka you're allowed to)

@StepHen Nope.

@StepHen in Python 2 you can redefine True and False

@EriktheOutgolfer False=1;True=0;

but then they'll be normal variables, and if you use del True it'll return back to normal

False=True=None

3:38 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer Nothing else, though, but you can do some black magic.
Alright, I was saying, about simple C++ JSON libraries?

@CensoredUsername But then False is still Falsey :P

@StepHen I successfully redefined False to "potato." What am I doing with my life?

making your own life harder for no real purpose

@CensoredUsername :o gasp I'm getting the bytes down too :P

if False == "potato.": die

3:42 PM
life.rethink()

I don't think I can golf mine much more
if False == "potato.": raise Dead

@CensoredUsername At 500+ bytes, someone can always golf it a bit somewhere

I've done basically every conversion I'm aware of
like half that bytecount is in a python oneliner

there we go with star abuse again

if False == "potato": sys.exit(1)

3:44 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer I was really tempted to star that

@EriktheOutgolfer i starred it

well, I dunno if that's star abuse, but it might be imo

At least it's not as bad as last night, to be fair. They're somewhat legitimate stars at the least.

I think I can shave 5 more bytes off if I were to switch to python 2

@HyperNeutrino oh let's just forget last night...I mean, it's even pinned with bold letters!

3:45 PM
@CensoredUsername Well then, go further up and further in! Always golf some more

but then I need to install python 2 on this machine

@EriktheOutgolfer yeah that was horrible; first timeout i ever experienced

@CensoredUsername Nah, just do it on TIO

@CensoredUsername TIO exists for a reason.
darn, ninja'd

tio is good for golf

3:47 PM
@CensoredUsername How is your thingy so much shorter than mine >.< did you combine the left-spin and right-spin functions?

@HyperNeutrino fortunately I wasn't there...but I remember it continued while being on timeout! H O R R I B L E ! ! 1 1

@HyperNeutrino Mac or Linux or Michaelsoft Binbows?

@EriktheOutgolfer I know ! 1 1 ! Timeout should prevent starring too.

(whoops)

3:47 PM
@ckjbgames ? I'm talking about a chat timeout btw

@ckjbgames or Mi¢ha€£$oft Binbo₩$?

Now 514 characters (still python 3, you were right, there's always space to golf)

@HyperNeutrino I meant to reply to a question about installing Python

@CensoredUsername I can promise you, if you get more eyes on it, you'll lose another 10 or so :P at least

3:48 PM
@DJMcMayhem Hi!
@EriktheOutgolfer yes

wait a second, Jeff Atwood has two PPCG gold badges... for sharing PPCG questions

@StepHen this is what is wrong with society

life is unfair

Where can I find the docs for json-cpp?

@ckjbgames oh ok I see.

3:50 PM
@HyperNeutrino yeh
Does anyone else here read 2600?

Just lost the game :(

@CensoredUsername wat is it

need the https I think

3:52 PM
tio link, but was too long for chat

@CensoredUsername oh. my. god.
3

Someone's again abusing stars.

tio seriously needs syntax markup

As I said, literally half the bytecount is that one line

@Uriel Tell Dennis

3:54 PM
"tio link, but was too long for chat" shouldn't be starred

Updates just finished on my Ubuntu machine

@EriktheOutgolfer Neither should ^

@EriktheOutgolfer why not?
it's funny

Uh I'm not good at Python, but can you simply m(1,i,j,p,o,1):m(1,i,j,p,o) at all?

I didn't star it fwiw but I was planning on it

3:56 PM
why was my last post starred
@LegionMammal978 Why is this starred?

I didn't because I do'nt like having 2 posts on the starboard with 1 or 2 stars

@Riker not imo

Q: How to convert HEX2 to RGBA?

ObsdarekThe world of art is full of colour, but the world of the network is even fuller than the world of art of diferent colours and it's renderings. Thats why we need to know how to convert one type of colour format to another one. ;) The challenge is self-evident: Make a function than can convert s...

@EriktheOutgolfer well not everyone agrees with you

also "^" shouldn't be starred either

3:57 PM
@Riker Atm there's a bunch

StepHen: I'm heavily abusing dictionary comprehension syntax to call 2 statements inside that iteration so I don't have to make line breaks

@StepHen yep :/

Are mods able to starkill or only ROs?
I would assume mods have everything ROs have...

@HyperNeutrino if ros can do it mods can do it

Yeah.
>.<

3:58 PM
who is starring every post ever

Is there a way to shorten "\n" with a newline literal? @CensoredUsername

WHO IS STARRING ALL THOSE MESSAGES

@EriktheOutgolfer WHOMST

Eventually they'll run out.

nope, would still be 4 bytes

3:58 PM
@HyperNeutrino damage is done by then

Q: Defaults for word lists

Toby SpeightSome challenges (that I'm currently mulling over with a view to posting) require that the solution produces valid words. Having to embed an entire dictionary in a code-golf entry isn't the point of the challenge, so I'd like answers to be able to depend on access to a word list. It doesn't matt...

There's no need to call in two ROs.

don't star thisd
don't star this, either

there's no need to timeout again

3:59 PM
HEEELP! I'm drowning in star abuse!

Wrong time to walk in I guess

@EriktheOutgolfer i bet that will get starred

looks like it's been cleaned up

@CensoredUsername nah

@EriktheOutgolfer "^" is still on the starboard for crying out loud

4:00 PM
"^" is still starred (why star reference of star-worthy message instead of that message itself?)

Well, I'm outta here for now. Hope this star abuse gets cleaned up. o/

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Draco18sSandboxing this mostly so I don't forget about it (as I don't want to initiate this so soon after v3). Unlikely to need any serious revision, but comments are appreciated none the less. Prisoner's Dilemma v4: The Amnesiac Gentlemen. This is similar to v3 Petri Dilemma, except with one significa...

me too o/

Me too o/ (I guess it's a nice way to protest)

Gonna go program. Be back soon!

4:08 PM
Are we being too harsh on a newcomer?

@LeakyNun star spamming is a first degree crime.

@Uriel no, not about that
@EriktheOutgolfer really?

huh?
@Uriel umm...wrong reply?

@EriktheOutgolfer you know what you did

@EriktheOutgolfer probably

4:13 PM
well, I just answered a question he asked...and asked for clarifying some stuff

@EriktheOutgolfer you answered it and deleted it 3 seconds after.

that's because I want to keep timestamp for when the challenge is cleared up...it might be invalid
is that considered rude or something?

I don't know. Never mind.

also, no offense, but "you know what you did" makes you sound like parent punishing their child for being naughty...

@StepHen golfed it down to 510 characters by replacing the dictionary search with l=[1,l,-1][ord(c)-60];k-=l

4:16 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer sorry

should we ping the ROs or something? star abuse has been overdone and I'm not feeling well...

@EriktheOutgolfer It looks like it's all fixed now

Finally installed cURL for People!

@StepHen it does but there was something momentary before iirc

@EriktheOutgolfer context?

4:24 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer That might have been legit :P the abuse is all gone

@CensoredUsername You don't need all the elifs most of them can be ifs
Oh wait you do nevermind

@EinkornEnchanter I do because of the final else
a possible optimization would be replacing the =='s with >'s

@CensoredUsername What is the challenge?

You can move the first elif up one and change it to an if

@EinkornEnchanter Link to the code?

@StepHen Thanks

Jim
To native speakers: does the verb take an "s" on conditional? E.g.: "If that happens then…"

@Jim In that case it does, dunno about in general though

4:29 PM
@Jim No, "If those happen then" is a counter example

@Jim In that situation, yes
@Jim There are some exceptions. English is like that.
3

Jim
I forgot to precise: for the third person of singular

verbs in conditionals won't conjugate any differently than otherwise.

Jim
Okay, thanks all, that's what I thought

@Jim AFAIK yes, but the only rule in English you can follow is that there's always an exception

4:30 PM
So for third person singular there will be an s as long as there would be one otherwise

Jim
@StepHen Not really actually. My language has way more exceptions

@Jim What language

@StepHen No, I meant "would"

Jim
@ckjbgames French

@Jim bonjour, idunnofrench

4:32 PM
@Jim Heh we get half our pronunciation/silent letter exceptions from you guys :P

Jim
@StepHen Don't thank us :p

Q: Should we set some "base" rules that apply to every submission?

ChristianRight now, this question has 3 downvotes and 4 close votes because it's unclear what they're asking. If you ask me, that's unfair. To me, it's very clear what they're asking: Given a hex2 color code of eight hexadecimal digits, you must output an rgba color code, with the 3 color channels integer...

@NewMetaPosts why can't your friends learn some punctuality from you 0.o

@NewMetaPosts why can't your friends learn not to be lazy from you?

maybe you guys should quit eating all the butter

4:38 PM
what are you guys talking about

the butter

@EriktheOutgolfer I don't think they consider him a friend, given the bad name he provides them with

we lost a wheat wizard

@totallyhuman we'll have him again, it happens a lot of times...

@totallyhuman but we gained an einkorn enchanter

4:40 PM
@Uriel what bad name?

@EriktheOutgolfer they are considered lazy because he's right on time

@CensoredUsername Here's a golf I was able to make on your code:

@EinkornEnchanter for some reason you're putting a leading newline

bye for now

Its a hack to make long links fit in chat

4:43 PM
trailing newline is better though

@EinkornEnchanter nice, combined with my last changes that brings it to 490 characters

hah found that one too
damn, more than 78 characters less than what I initially thought was already impossible to improve now

There's probably another 100 or so to shave off. Your code is still readable.

5:04 PM
exec(code.decode("zlib"))

Can r!=len(p) be r<len(p)?

yes
good one

Hello
I am currently programming

5:08 PM

@EinkornEnchanter Remind me who the current RO is. It's been a while since I knew.

@ckjbgames There are a few, DJMcMayhem and Mego are the ones I remember

you want continue, not break
so only 445

Still saves 1 byte I guess
One of those is from changing != to <

@EinkornEnchanter Thanks

5:10 PM
@ckjbgames They are all here

@EinkornEnchanter Thanks!

@ckjbgames room owners have their name italicized when speaking in chat

@Poke Ok
How to get a starred chat post:
1. Wait until someone is star abusing.
2. Say anything. Anything at all.
3. There you go. A starred post.

hmm
should i have a conditional pop the condition?

@CensoredUsername Have you added your answer to the question yet? Its a lot shorter than the other python answer.

5:14 PM
@totallyhuman I do, and forth and postscript do

@Okx hi

also it's my challenge so wasn't planning on adding it
anyway 442

I like that last golf

O(1) lookup is for losers

5:16 PM
shorter > faster

b-but stacks

anyway afk 25min

[l,-1,1,-l]["-\/|=><".index(c)%4] is 2 bytes shorter

So, does anyone have a fun and quick question to golf an answer for?
@EinkornEnchanter kewl

@ckjbgames I asked this one yesterday if thats up your alley.

5:19 PM
@EinkornEnchanter not really

What tags are you looking for?

@Wheat/ @EinkornEnchanter, why did you change your name?

I wanted to change things up bit

@EinkornEnchanter :thinking:
🤔🤔🤔🤔
@EinkornEnchanter Are there any really famous PPCG questions?

you can look at the top voted ones ^^

5:22 PM
@totallyhuman link me in

@EinkornEnchanter i found one
525
Q: Produce the number 2014 without any numbers in your source code

Joe Z. Note to challenge writers as per meta consensus: This question was well-received when it was posted, but challenges like this, asking answerers to Do X without using Y are likely to be poorly received. Try using the sandbox to get feedback on if you want to post a similar challenge...

fun!

@ckjbgames most of them are popcons so good luck finding one you want to answer that isn't locked
/salt

5:23 PM
@Poke indeed
i'm going to answer that one using brain flak debug flags
that's gonna hurt
Could someone tell me what all of the Brain-Flak debug flags do?

You can use -H to pull up the debug help menu
To call a debug flag preface it with @ and run the interpreter in debug mode (-d).

@EinkornEnchanter ok
@EinkornEnchanter What are some that I might need to use?

@lt is useful for creating numbers

@EinkornEnchanter Ok. How do I use it?

However if you run in debug mode you are going to get a lot of extra output
@lt12 will evaluate to 12
However since numbers are banned in the source code this probably wont help any I'm realizing

5:34 PM
@EinkornEnchanter Yeah
I need to take a shower. BRB

Which challenge is this for?

I think its 2014 without numbers.

LinK?

Scroll up a bit, its oneboxed

5:47 PM
@CensoredUsername Ok I think I'm done golfing this for now. Here's my final solution at 438 bytes:
https://tio.run/##TU/LjtswDLznKwgWBaSNlNR9HWIr/QSf9mRbgOEoXSWOZKjONkXdb09FObswDQvkkBzODH/GF@@@3O8Hc4SRtXxnlHHXiwntaPJBtZtfQ29HhrVDnntVfWqeeuPYEBOe/72wTFhxEoPwIuO7RcmPPoAV8Xdg2JDKk@jmMnB7xBKV6v7l1RCsiwdwc/LWMYQPWAV/dQfGsu9PgW8v7Y15vrZ8n31riCZxej5foDy07qeJ07xZkY0Lu4kgzklUr2TUtYLfL7Y3EIqknQDo1FCFpjo3MY9qNKmJBm7bz7S8zpKJ/B2Q2cNkGgcygs8ad8GM1@AWILyWEV2rLO@8G627mtjsVdWLSJEJ2TcVyno7qX2Bm6ONPjv@8WuTn6Xq42QSijkWXYE/sHUHeMgk6lLibp7zEVmr231kAREnoCgXL8W0mlKpYQtQ6LquFzjBe1iEfuA6fYtQCSdwmhuFns8QTiRvjRL0Hl4TTgvPtBRboBJ9De88mpoRkFLqhx6VGOa7aZ54ojN@/w8

@EinkornEnchanter Golfing one of @CensoredUsername's answers?

Yes. He hasn't actually posted it as an answer, but it is his.

@EinkornEnchanter Is there no Python shorthand for continue?
I know pass is 0 or something

I don't think there is. 0 works for pass because pass only serves as an empty expression, which 0 does the same.

@EinkornEnchanter Ok, thanks
@EinkornEnchanter I'll take a look and see if I can golf anything. But I don't think I will, because you golfed it before me :)

5:56 PM
More eyes will be good. I would not at all be surprised if you found a few golfs.

I would
I don't even know what that code is supposed to do
:P

I'm not sure what the code does either.
