Q: Tips for golfing in Tikz

Wheat WizardTikz is a Latex package used for drawing precise images in Latex documents. It has a massive specification and a boatload of features that may be useful for graphical-output style questions. What tips do people have for golfing in Tikz. As always tips should be specific to to Tikz (e.g. "Remov...

Turns out ilikegoats1234 is stronger than my current password...

Maybe you should change your password to that

nah everybody knows "hunter2" is the best password

According to the science of cryptography, if you have a truly strong password, you shouldn't be afraid to type it in chat.

correct horse battery staple

7:44 PM
hm is bash.org down?

Appears to be

@Riker -1 does not have substring goat in it

goathunter1

Wtf no what psycho would hunt goats O_O

@Downgoat w0lfhuntgoats19

7:47 PM
i-ama-goat-ama2

:( google not allowing that
Need uppercase

>_<
huh it was last up 3 days ago
bash.org

What people designing password restrictions fail to realize is that the stricter the restrictions, the easier it is for a computer to figure out.
Requiring it to not have a dictionary word is simply absurd

@feersum I'm pretty sure you mean if you have a truly strong password generation approach

@DJMcMayhem I think he was trolling for Downgoat's actual password

7:51 PM
Which is why I'm OK saying I use the correct horse battery staple method with one digit appended to the end

I use a method that is easy to remember and works for almost all restrictions

I use methods that are totally insecure

I bet mine are too
If you know my method, you can basically guess all my passwords first try

@Downgoat IAmA-1Gaot

@Riker works with I capitalized and exclamation mark at end

7:53 PM
Oops, I mean, "My passwords a really secure and you definitely shouldn't try to guess it!"

Pretty simple, does not contain goat, has upper, lower, number, symbol, 10 chars.

Only downside is that you said it in chat

Shit Rikers is actually strong password but can't use it now
@BusinessCat They are two downsides, that and where my feet are :P

It's actually OK to use it, you don't lose any entropy since every other possible password was also said by Riker in an alternate universe.

@Downgoat lel
sorry about that

7:57 PM
:P
wait does anyone here actually know my email

yes

nvm can use safely
@Riker O_O

protip: spaces and hyphens work in most password engines, and are generally counted as strong
@Downgoat lol that was an interesting typo
and from the github feeds

You mean the non @Vihan.org one?

ye

7:59 PM
Shit :|

Why not just use a simple password then change it to whatever google encrypts that to

iirc you used to have it there
@Downgoat it's chill man, I'm not going to spam you or something
it's just in a list of emails I am never going to use but probably should keep

@Riker I am not worried you are going to do evil I am worried some evil sheep or something will do evil to me

lol
nobody else seems to know it so I think you're good

Q: C programming header inclusion

Abhishek SahuIf we have to include certain header files for using different functions then why they are not provided to us in a single header file, then we would have to just include that header file.

8:10 PM
@LliwTelracs I assume good faith, hence directed the user to Meta PPCG.

Oh man... just had a massage signup sheet at work that they emailed us via Google Docs. Needless to say it didn't work AT ALL and now they have revoked all access
ahahah

Hey, so I had this idea. Apache Commons Lang for java has a lot of neat functions, but the import looks like this: import org.apache.commoms.lang3.*, which is awfully long. Could you dump the Apache source in your working directory, and ommit the import, saving bytes?

i have tears in my eyes from that one

@DJMcMayhem how do I undo a delete in vim?

can't you use u as usual?

8:16 PM
uh
I don't vim so thanks
that works

oh okay. the question seemed oddly specific :P
so yeah, u is undo

cool, thanks

redo is Ctrl+R in case you need it ;)

thanks

8:28 PM
@Riker Yeah, u or sometimes p

what's p do?

Paste

ah

But delete is cut, so cut+paste does nothing

what's copy/cut?
@DJMcMayhem oh makes sense
is there a copy line/word command?

8:29 PM
Copy is y but it takes a motion

ah okay
like d

Have you done vimtutor?

wokring through it right now

Ah, OK
I suppose for terminology p is actually put and y is actually Yank

ok so in vim, $ means the end, ^ is the beginning, w is word, and b is backwards word

8:31 PM
Mostly. 0 is beginning and ^ is the first non-whitespace

ah okay
cool

There's also | which is effectively 0
Which is good know if you ever learn V since 0 is half-deprecated

ah ok

8:52 PM
Just overtaken @Mego in rep! yay!
(only by 1 though)

@muddyfish Mego: 16.5k, muddyfish: 16.4k

me: 16427, mego, 16426

I see 16,466

Mego just got upvotes at 20:53:49, 20:53:45, 20:53:36 and 20:53:34. I smell serial voting

Och, indeed.

9:00 PM
wow

Someone's an ass.

I feel kind of bad for them
I just got a ping from documentation.
The days of having an empty pingbox are over

What does that mean

@Pavel stack overflow documentation

Why did it ping you tho

9:07 PM
to review changes
I thought you needed a bronze badge to do that

no

@DJMcMayhem I've Vim'd for about three years now, and TIL that.

yeah but you aren't helka homba: vim edition

9:15 PM
Ok, this is getting silly.

wot?

How do I opt out of documentation based pings?
I've literally just gotten 4

you can't iirc if you can let me know

muddyfishI just got a ping from documentation with review items. lol

which one?
code-trolling?

@Riker documentation tag

ah

instead it should go on SO meta

9:21 PM
The documentation tag on the Meta post that muddy just linked.

how do I migrate it?
and why are the tags even there?
reposted on SO meta

Link?

Q: Too many badges breaks the "asked" box

TheLethalCoderJon Skeet has broken the CSS Again! His badges overlap onto the next line when he edits a question, this causes the "asked" box to extend and show some blank space: I am seeing this on Windows 10 and IE 11. Observed on this question. I think it is time to go with the "k" notation.

@DJMcMayhem stealth ninja'd

9:29 PM
Yeah, I realized that when my comment made no sense

Q: Should questions be asking for random numbers

LliwTelracsAs seen in this challenge and this one in the sandbox, some questions ask for pseudorandom numbers to be applied in a mathematical operation. Frequently, these questions are trivial mathematical operations for which the only difference is the operations use a pseudorandom number. Should generatio...

Can I jokingly suggest on the Meta "What should we have for close reasons?" post the following -- "We won't do your homework for you."
Or is that too salty?

I'd upvote it

@AdmBorkBork Maybe phrase it differently
You could call it "This is not StackOverflow" to be nice

Q: C programming puzzle based on returning value of operators

Abhishek SahuWhat will be the output of the code and Why ? void main() { for(int i=0;i<10;i=i++) printf("*"); }

@Pavel but stackoverflow isn't a homework solving service

10:04 PM
I guess it's not the same thing

we already have one referring to stack overflow

@DestructibleWatermelon My tinned comment is "Stack Overflow is not a code writing service"

and thats not really sufficient from copying and pasting a home work assignment

@DJMcMayhem what does <shift>[hjkl] do?
I'm used to nethack being "move <direction> as far as you can", but that's not it

10:10 PM
Virtual plasma ball: glslsandbox.com/e#35799.0

how does that work o_O

The source is literally on top.

yes

@Riker Most of them aren't that useful, except for J which is awesome. Tbh I don't even remember what K does
You can do :h <key> to find out any of them
Wait a second, Nevermind K is awesome too. It opens help for the word under your cursor
H and L are pointless IMO

@DJMcMayhem ah, okay
@DJMcMayhem oh cool

10:22 PM
@Pavel I have added a stack diagram to demonstrate the creation of stacks within the stack stack, along with the manipulation of individual stacks within the stack stack to make sure that the stacks are stacked correctly. — VoteToClose 36 secs ago
Stack counter: 9

That's great.

H and L (and M I suppose) are some of the few non-backwards-compatible changes V has, but that's because their behavior depends on the size of the window which doesn't make sense for V

ah, makes sense

Just so you know, there's also a vim/V room chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/40448/vim-golf

oh cool

10:24 PM
There's also this chatroom.
;)

yeah but you can get kicked for noise here >_>

I'd happily talk about vim all day, but I imagine at some point it gets old :P

I'd argue discussion about programming languages when there is no specific PPCG topic is not noise.

I'd absolutely agree.

you'd be surprised what people consider noise...
>_< </salt>

10:27 PM
@Pavel In fairness, I'm actually really proud of that answer. xD I didn't think it was possible in Vitsy because he removed most of the stack stack operators (:, ?, |).

@Riker Don't worry. In ~6.5~ hours when I'm elected dictator made a room owner, I'll enforce an only vim related discussions rule.

lol

(completely kidding of course)

yeah I know

I'm not sure how tasteful that joke was but I couldn't resist

10:33 PM
lol

I just noticed I voted for everyone in the RO elections :D d'oh

That's genius! That way, your choices are guaranteed to win :P

I never looked at it that way XD
I mean you gotta make your voice count :)

So if there were 7 or more candidates, the best strategy would be to downvote all of them?

Next time we have an election I suggest the one with the most downvotes wins.
Ohh
new challenge type idea
I bet that'd be a huge success!!

10:41 PM
That seems like an... Unpopular idea
You win your own challenge type!

Right, that is the idea!
The less popular the better!

holy shit somehow I ignored flawr
how did that happen
flawr is cool

@Riker <3

<3
probably a misclick

@Riker So you didn't get my last messages? </3

10:43 PM
I just did
:P
dont' worry I unignored you
I noticed because there was a broken conversatoin, and I didn't remember ignoring anyone

I mean that one:
2 days ago, by flawr
@Riker lol

oh I got that one

Great=)

hm, must have ignored you somewhere in between
@flawr and omg that sub is hilarious

@flawr do Community downvotes for spam flags count?

10:45 PM
@JanDvorak Yeah why not!

In which case the Charcoal might contribute some flags for spam

^

@mınxomaτ Now I'm not sure whether you actually wanted to reference this, since I did.

@JanDvorak remind me, are you on the autoflagging roster?

I'm not

10:48 PM
@flawr I just took the first google link because I can't be bothered. But yes.

@flawr I know just enough german to understand what he's saying
o_O

@Riker Haha, this song is the wurst.

no
that pun is

That's got nothing on "Alles wird aus Hack gemacht".

everythign is hacked together?

10:51 PM
I have an even better one:

wot is this
their eyes
and smiles
o-o

He looks so startled in the thumbnail.

"the earth is dying"?
@flawr are they stoned

@Riker I don't think there is another explanation

yeah they are stoned alright
@flawr yeah
it's funnier if you read the title as english
"die wood, fichtl lied to you"
which actually makes more sense given the lyrics

10:56 PM
Haha, I just found out there is a remake with the same "musicians" a bunch of years later: youtube.com/watch?v=uxlsPrPF_lk

"make the woodys great again"

CMC: Given three inputs, a string sentence s, a number n and a string word w, replace the n'th word in the sentence with w

@flawr yeah they look even more stoned

@flawr That's hilarious.

@miles is there a way to repeat a verb f until a condition holds? The best I can get is $:@f[@.c. I tried using ^:` but that seems to only be over the arguments, not the result.

10:58 PM
@flawr Though the thing in the costume will haunt my dreams.

For example, f("the quick dog jumped", 3, "fox") --> "the quick fox jumped"
Zero or one indexed

@ConorO'Brien 5/7 even better synced.

@mınxomaτ how do i run this?

If it doesn't run, it's time for a better PC.

11:02 PM
It runs on my phone. :D
Actually, it runs better on my phone than it does on my laptop

I surprised how many people wonder about this. The majority of folks who have a modern smartphone spend more on their phone than their PC. Of course you are getting better gfx performance from a more expensive media device.

@mınxomaτ i mean, i don't see it anywhere
i clicked hide code, but its just black

(s,n,w)=>s.replace(RegExp("(((?:\\w+?) ){"+~-n+"})\\w+"),"$1"+w)

@flawr 5/7 for creepyness maybe >_<

@mınxomaτ My laptop is more expensive

On a related note, why is it so dang hard to find GPU specs online?

What kind of specs are you looking for?

I'm just wondering about my phone GPU
It's an "Adreno 530"

@DJMcMayhem All the specs are on Wikipedia.

11:14 PM
Yeah, I just found that. Although it doesn't say anything about Vram

It's an iGPU, the RAM is shared AFAIK.

(or maybe I'm misunderstanding it, and phones don't have VRAM)
Yeah, ninjad

@ConorO'Brien a bloated way of writing a while loop is u^:v^:_ where u is the body and v is the condition. Using recursion like you are will probably be shorter unless you can figure out the number of iterations you need

wat
@DJMcMayhem qualcomm cpu?

Yeah, how'd you know?

wat
11:17 PM
@DJMcMayhem Adreno is a Qualcomm GPU, and in phones, they are all on a single SoC

Makes sense

wat
Why does French have separate words for brown hair color ("brun") and brown for everything else ("marron")

Why does greek have 4-something words for love? Probably to be expressive.
even in English we have "blonde"

Literature.SE made it to public beta!

wat
@ConorO'Brien yeah but there is no real word for the color of blond/blonde hair by itself

11:21 PM
@wat "golden"

wat
it's not tan, not yellow...
golden makes me think of this color:

wat
also, the word "golden" is already used to describe hair. I can't think of a word for the color of light blond/blonde hair
@ConorO'Brien Mostly the second one

"straw"

wat
@ConorO'Brien OK, I guess that's right
Thanks for clarifying that for me

11:24 PM

@MartinEnder as the second highest user on the site: thanks for posting that here!

I've been lurking for a week or so, but so far haven't encountered any questions where I'd be confident enough to answer (although I left a comment or two).

I have one answer there with like 30 points and a 50 point bounty :D

I have an answer with 10 votes and a closed question with (8?) votes
do we have a challenge that finds the roots of a given polynomial
