6:00 PM
stop calling it a disease u zombie-phobic!!
god made them that way

Hey, I used written air quotes.

Zombies are caused by a nanobot infection
Like the Borg

"written air quotes"?

@Dennis Rabies s/irrational fear of water/insatiable thirst for blood/
presto, zombie virus

6:08 PM
More like vampire virus.

@Dennis Aren't those just plain quotes?

That's the joke.

@Dennis if you're a goat answer is to use your mouth

Hah!

6:11 PM
I thought goats don't eat meat
Only tin cans

Curious how in a discussion of zombiism and the consumption of the infecteds' flesh, the quotes are the part that gets everyone's attention.

@BusinessCat <disapproval face>

@DJMcMayhem Are you posting that challenge?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

6:12 PM
context-wise I don't think Dennis was actually quoting somebody, so therefore they were air quotes

@Dennis I'd say it's more "curious" than curious.

How do u think hay as goat currency originated?

@Dennis We're programmers. Proper syntax is critical.

Woooo StackOverflow mobile site has monospace text now

@DJMcMayhem portal 2?

6:15 PM
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Great, now I can't read Jelly answers anymore...

Oh thank goodness. The dickbutt thing is over. I still don't who did it, how it happened, and how to prevent the next dumb thing, though @_@

@Sherlock9 :/ my internet has the same problems. Reddit apparently doesn't use a "supported certificate issuer" 1/5 the times I try.
> ಠ_ಠ
ғᴛғʏ

Nope
Was going for a heavily-stressed out face

@Sherlock9 Will you post a challenge for me?

Sure. What have you got?

6:16 PM
@Sherlock9 Ugh, I mean, will you create a challenge for me

@Sherlock9 "dickbutt thing" wat

@Sherlock9 wat

Somebody messed with my Internet, stripped the CSS, changed the "a"s to "z"s and "the"s to "dickbutt"s

For about an hour

6:19 PM
Lol

Why to https 101
Very surprised SE doesnt auto switch to https

@LeakyNun which one?
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ work

Wooooo @DJMcMayhem changed pic

@DJMcMayhem ಠ_ಠ y r u on tnb and not working

@Downgoat because people keep pinging me. :P

6:24 PM
Solution doable notifiCations
*disabke

@Downgoat hahahahahaha
hahahaha

@LeakyNun I'm a little frazzled by everything that happened today (dickbutt is just the most recent thing) but let me see what I can do

ha

What would happen if you tried to put Javascript in a markdown link? Like [link](javascript:document.body.innerHTML="")

[like that?](javascript:document.body.innerHTML="")

6:26 PM
@Geobits ಠ_ಠ

Apparently it doesn't work. :(

@Downgoat Just sayin :P

👨‍❤‍👨⬅one character 17 bytes

test Don't click this

👨‍❤‍💋‍👨⬅one character 24 bytes

6:33 PM
@Downgoat I think I've mentioned this twice in here before

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei The first shows up as 3 characters for me; the second shows up as 4

Me too

@DanTheMan Try to select it.

If I could figure out how to use chat search I'd find the messages

I can highlight 4 distinct characters

6:35 PM
@Poke What about the TNBDE? :P

@DanTheMan depends on font, but it really is one character

@BusinessCat Weird, it's one character for me.

@El'endiaStarman the who what now
Aug 9 at 13:39, by Poke
why don't we have https redirection

It's because of Microsoft and their incomplete emoji support I think.

@DJMcMayhem :/ have fun success?

6:36 PM
@El'endiaStarman true, you can't select distinct emojis. You can select the whole thing

@DanTheMan I'm on windows and I can only select it as 1 character

I'm on Firefox on Windows 8.1. You?

chrome windows 10

Chrome Win10 here too.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ it's too bad you can't play during the evenings and I can't play during the day... :\

Chrome on Android 6, actually on Chrome they're distinct emojis but on keyboard it's a single character

@DJMcMayhem one of these times I'm staying up until 12am to play
>_>

woah, it appears way different on firefox
like, three little heads in a flower shape

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I do that all the time

6:39 PM
@NathanMerrill What?

Even though I have to get up early the next day...

How it looks on Google keyboard

chrome ^

Firefox, Windows 10

6:41 PM
@NathanMerrill Dat URL.

wowsers who made this

IE11 Win8.1

6:43 PM
Is a cat male or female? (if you do not know it's actual sex)

@Dennis I have a J question. I'm working on some exercises, and one of the exercises is to find the Nth mersenne prime. Is there a general form to find the nth member in a sequence? I'm hoping that there exists some form for, say, a verb C that gives 1 for containing a member, and 0 otherwise, getting the Nth natural number satisfying C (that is, yielding 1)

I think this goes to prove that emoji is actually not a universal language

@flawr Neither?

@TimmyD This is what I see too.

@DanTheMan So when you talk about a cat you just saw, you talk abut it?

6:43 PM
@Poke Only the very best.

I generally refer to animals as "it" if I don't know its sex

(and not her*/*him?)

@El'endiaStarman Can we put this up by the search box? This appears to be way more helpful than normal search

@flawr Yes, why?

@El'endiaStarman Like no one ever was

6:44 PM
@flawr generally considered to be male, but for the most part female cats are more common

maybe in the chat topic near the link to chatiquette

@El'endiaStarman you can totally do it too! You're a room owner

Lel my language doesn't have gender-specific pronouns

Animals of unknown gender are commonly referred to with "it". Doing the same for humans is not advised. :P

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei What language?

6:45 PM
@DanTheMan Turkish
@DanTheMan he, she and it are "o"

@NathanMerrill I could, but I'd rather not. It's even less official than the Chatiquette. :P

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei That's really cool!
At least English has singular they.

Japanese is ever better. The subject of the sentence is very often omitted and left to be determined by context.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Are female cats really more common?

yeah
in my experience though

6:46 PM
@BusinessCat same in Turkish. We use o if we really need to.

That's perhaps why on reddit most people seem to have female cats.

@BusinessCat To parse them is my test
To query is my cause...

Example: "Baksana." = "Look at."

It's just confusing. In my native language cats and suns are female, while dogs and moons are male=)
@BusinessCat Omg.

1 min ago, by Releasing Helium Nuclei
@BusinessCat same in Turkish. We use o if we really need to.

6:48 PM
I will trawl across the chat // Searching far behind // Each message to understand // The data that's inside!

And I think even if you do include the subject, you typically use the person's name instead of a pronoun

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei What is o?

@El'endiaStarman is it still considered nerd sniping if its about pop culture?

Even when talking in the 2nd person

6:49 PM
4 mins ago, by Releasing Helium Nuclei
@DanTheMan he, she and it are "o"

@NathanMerrill It's definitely something similar, isn't it? :P

@NathanMerrill Then it's geek sniping
(just made that up)

Why sniping? I'm more of a close combat type.

@BusinessCat we have suffixes that specify first second and third persons

6:50 PM
Turkish is weird

We rarely use pronouns

@flawr Probably due to Randall Munroe.

@El'endiaStarman yeah, I still wonder what the resistance is.
(well not really wha tit is, but more like how you actaully get there.

6:51 PM
IIRC there's a huge thread in the xkcd forums trying to solve this exact problem. :P
@DanTheMan Oh, and of course pi shows up. Makes perfect sense. :P

you mean tau/2

inb4 tau is better 2/tau
Shit ninja'd

^
I'm joking though, pi is better

tau is greater than pi though

@PyRulez only on number line

6:54 PM
Oh no, let's please not have a pi vs tau war in here again...

^ End of discussion

Til I am a active user on so

@DanTheMan no pau ಠ_ಠ

6:56 PM
You forgot pau man.

man which is dan

@El'endiaStarman Too many of those dirty integrals involved.

Sorry.

6:57 PM
@PyRulez I selected all of them.

but pau should really be sqrt(2)*pi

How about pi*tau/e?

Geometric mean

Please include the title of the poll when posting a link.

7:00 PM
I remember on G+ after polls came out, I asked "Is the answer to this poll no?" 100 people voted yes.

thx

@feersum y u do dis

@feersum Answer: e, peanutbutter is gross, notepad++
@feersum in one word: you're wrong

Me? I didn't vote for any of those.

7:15 PM
lol both C&H and conor's name changes are on there.

I like how "okay seriously stop abusing stars" is above PPCG's graduation announcement.

What happened on 2016-08-27?

@DanTheMan Probably something to do with ColdGolf. Lemme see.

7:24 PM
Woo! What If? has 100% commitment!

@BusinessCat \o/

@DanTheMan Really, I don't know. Maybe chat was just especially busy that day.

@El'endiaStarman 27th wtf

@NathanMerrill Ohhh yeah, it's probably mostly because of the deep dreams. They kept everybody talking.

@DanTheMan Poor quartata

Was the 27th significant in some way I don't know?
Oh, nvm

We should all change our avatars to trippy lsd images
All his doing

well, I guess its time to chagne it back

7:30 PM
Probably. I hear anyone who hasn't changed back by the 1st is going to be permanently banned.

I'm willing to take that gamble

why is area 51 separate from SE?

@BusinessCat Good, good. Any theory requires testing :P

I was the 199/200th committer. lel

7:34 PM
what-if
I thought I had committed months ago,, but I must have forgotten to actually commit >_>

What if? Seems like duplicate of world building.

Apparently they hate What if? questions on Worldbuilding

;_;

They would become off-topic there

I really hope randall joins
i heard someone emailed him

7:37 PM
@BusinessCat So the site would collapse then?

Well there's a difference between "what would happen if" and "how can I reasonably explain this"

Q: RfC sent to what-if.xkcd.com

nitsua60Proposal: What if(hypotheticals) Questions sent along to what-if: Ca. 1 March 2016 I sent the following message along to the contact address one can find at what-if. I'll post any reply I get. Hello- There’s recently been proposed at StackExchange a “WhatIf” site. I’d like to ask you a...

The latter is more what Worldbuilding is I think

@BusinessCat "How can I reasonably explain this" sound terribly vague and broad to me.
But it seems like the entire [science-based] and [reality-check] tags.

@mınxomaτ are you associated with randall somehow or something?

7:40 PM
With POSIX regex, how can one select either something of the form <.*> or spaces? I currently have [(<.*>)|\s]+, but it's not quite working.

@Maltysen Yes. nitsua, the other WhatIf folks and me discussed this further in private.

TIL Minxomat is Randall from xkcd.

What a minx

2/10

@mınxomaτ may I ask how you are involved with xkcd? Just curious cuz it seems cool

7:43 PM
@Maltysen Translations mainly. But only WhatIf, not xkcd. There are a few people working on it.

whoa that's awesome

@ConorO'Brien No clue, sorry. I think you have more experience with J than I by now.
Why do IE and Safari have no support for WOFF2 by now? ಠ_ಠ

Because they are awful browsers

That would certainly explain it. (Never used Safari, so I can't tell.)

It's on Mac, so terrible by extension

7:50 PM
Never used a Mac either.

@BusinessCat ಠ_ಠ
ಠ_ಠ

@Dennis Isn't WOFF2 not a hard-and-fast specification yet? Meaning, isn't it still in development?

@TimmyD Not sure, but it works just fine with Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and the default Android browsers.

WOFF2?

The Web Open Font Format (WOFF) is a font format for use in web pages. It was developed during 2009 and is now a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Recommendation. WOFF is essentially OpenType or TrueType with compression and additional metadata. The goal is to support font distribution from a server to a client over a network with bandwidth constraints. == Submission as a standard == The WOFF specification was written by Jonathan Kew, Tal Leming, and Erik van Blokland, with reference conversion code written by Jonathan Kew. Following the submission of WOFF by the Mozilla Foundation, Opera Software...

7:52 PM
So it's not World of Final Fantasy 2? :(

@BusinessCat ....

WOFF doesn't actually beat a gzipped TTF (but has better support), but WOFF2 is usually 30% shorter.

safari has fastest JS engine

Fastest js != best browser

@Downgoat The fastest snail is still slow. If it requires CPU time, don't do it in JS.

7:54 PM
@Geobits it is fully ES6 compliant unlike chromes

@Downgoat I've never seen a site where that caused issues except when people are golfing tbh.

^
I rarely caret, but that deserved one.

Yay, I get a Dennis caret :D

@Dennis I wouldn't suspect Microsoft to invest in R&D for Internet Explorer, especially not for a proposed standard.

7:56 PM
@Geobits ok well y is safari so bad :/

@TimmyD Yeah, they'd only do that for the bleeding Edge stuff >_>

@Geobits Was that a pun?

Geobits? Making a pun? Never happens.

@Downgoat I didn't say it was? All I said was that there are other things beside js engine speed that matter.
I haven't used safari in years, because Mac is so bad.

Shit I meant to ping buisness cat not you

7:59 PM
That singular "i" in the third row here is really annoying me, and I can't figure out how to tweak the regex so it's not there.
