@DJMcMayhem lambda a,b:~-a%b+1

@Lynn Oh, cool. <C-v> would be better though. Too bad it's unprintable

yeup i'm stupid

It would also be really hard to get " and : with that approach

@LeakyNun wat is this python black magic

@TùxCräftîñg in math notation: ((a-1)%b)+1

3:02 PM
@LeakyNun ooh, that's clever

@DJMcMayhem I thought that is what you have in mind

It is, I just wasn't sure how to implement it

this is still black magic O_O

@DJMcMayhem You also have @= I guess. Without = is tricky though (I assume that’s what you mean)

@TùxCräftîñg think about it. 6 - 1 is 5, 5 % 3 is 2, 2 + 1 is 3

3:04 PM
clever

@TùxCräftîñg Think about it this way:
1%3 = 1
2%3 = 2
3%3 = 3
4%3 = 1
5%3 = 2
6%3 = 3
7%3 = 1
8%3 = 2
9%3 = 3

@Lynn I'm actually unfamiliar with @=. What exactly does it do?

So you effectively shifted the residue set

Run an expression as a macro
See :help @=

You could do :h<cr>10jfahylZZp for equals.

Try something like @="iHel"+"lo\e"

Which I never would have thought of until seeing your genius vim alphabet answers.
@Lynn Have you considered posting your "Yank text from help" hack on the vim tips page?

Q: Tips for golfing in vim

DJMcMayhemI've recently realized how vim works great for golfing, especially for kolmogorov-complexity. Also, according to meta vim is a perfectly acceptable 'programming language' at least, for the scope of this site, that is. What general tips do you have for golfing in Vim? I'm looking for ideas which ...

Nice idea. :h5↵kylZZp is even shorter

@flawr vi is better than emacs

english golf CMC: how to golf "there were no"

3:16 PM
@Downgoat There weren't

@DJMcMayhem there weren't any
longer than "there were no"

Or if you don't have to be perfectly grammatical "weren't"

@DJMcMayhem removing contraction, still same amount of woreds
and you'd need to add an "any" so its 3-4 words

"yoktu" i love turkish

Is anyone doing the printable challenge in Jelly? @Lynn @Dennis
If not then I'll start doing

3:19 PM
Oh BTW @Downgoat did you hear about vim 8 coming out? Super exciting.
It's practically neovim

:O rly

@Downgoat ain't no

too informal :P

@LeakyNun Not me

@Lynn well firstly how do I construct a character without using :o

3:22 PM
@Downgoat I'm on 7.4.2000+ so I'll barely notice a difference, but it adds some sane defaults (like dropping default compatible), drops support for some super old systems, and add asynchronous support. As well as some new keystroke combos.

@DJMcMayhem i dont think it has cursor recording :(
having built-in plugin manager seems very helpful but it would be better if it plugin manager manager

@Downgoat you mean "q"?

i mean like neovim where i click and cursor goes there

And I think they're talking about a builtin plugin manager too, but I don't remember for sure

3:24 PM
@DJMcMayhem yeah

@Downgoat :set mouse=a?
@Downgoat oh, I thought you were saying "I hope they add that"

@DJMcMayhem i try that but doesn't work for me'

@Downgoat what terminal emulator?

ohhhh i have to enable it in terminal settings

@LeakyNun …I have no clue

3:26 PM
@Lynn alright, given up
Thanks for your attention

@Downgoat That's weird, it works fine for me though I don't use very often. Are you on terminal or macvim?

terminal

I just watched 30 minutes of chat in time lapse. :3

@Downgoat you should definitely get macvim. Although I suppose it's not really worth it if you just use neovim anyway

@Downgoat Nope? They are a decent idea?

3:27 PM
@DJMcMayhem mac terminal works perfectly fine. idk why macvim would be better

@Downgoat out of curiosity, what do you see when you type i<M-a><esc>ga?

Speaking of. Do any of you use Kakoune?

@Lynn Golf a description of it to 64 chars 😛

“Sublime Vim”.

3:33 PM
@zyabin101 -1 for using 4 byte emoji instead of 2 byte equivilent: :P

@zyabin101 "Vim inspired, less keystrokes, Multiple selections, Orthogonal design"

@TimmyD The problem turned out to be unsolvable anyway. In the end I could avoid using PS.
@Maltysen It would be nice if you could send me your data in the next few days so I can finish the time table.
@Lynn heh, they brought back clippy :D

So, can I use the library for participating in challenges and what is required for that?

@zyabin101 i strongly don't reccomend using golfing lib. It's gonna get less upvotes than python because people don't understand it, and less upvotes than golfing lang because syntax still isn't short enough

3:40 PM
@Downgoat And include the import in score?

Bottom right buffer

@zyabin101 idk python. if it's like JS where you don't need import/require and can do it from CLI then you don't but in that case include instructions. Otherwise do

My controversial opinion: blah, that Terminus font looks awful.

@Downgoat that needs stars

3:42 PM
Gotta charge mom's phone, see you around!

:D

@Downgoat who made that? you?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Wish granted.

no i found it while browsing through social media >_>

@LeakyNun Go ahead. Too focused on TIO right now.

3:42 PM
thank you @zyabin101

@Dennis I've given it up

@HelkaHomba why disallow functions?
also REPLs usually count as a seperate language so you're disallowing those too ;_;

@zyabin101 yes, you need to include the import. You also need to make sure the library is publicly available

3:47 PM
But yeah, I've been nagging Amazon.com about their KDK (Kindle Development Kit) site being down and now a support rep thinks I'm having a problem with my (currently functioning) Kindle and is asking for live chat :/

@Downgoat I currently alternate between phlog and killstreak rainblower. (i like pyrovision and the killstreaker)

;_; i removed my pyrovision because i ran out of space in backpack

My current history of dealing with Amazon customer support:

Mon, Aug 08 2016:
Me: "Currently, http://kdk.amazon.com appears to be down. Is there a timeframe for when it will potentially be back up, or has the domain been discontinued?"
Support Rep Α: "I've reported this to our technical team, and they're working on taking care of it. Please try again over the next few hours. Errors like this are usually corrected shortly after they're reported."
Fri, Aug 12 2016:
Me: "It has been four days now. Please excuse my impatience, but are there any updates on the status of this?"
> Your feedback is helping us build Earth's Most Customer-Centric Company.

Thank you.

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΨΠʹ 0, they don't fix it :/

The responses indicate that it will take 1835 and a half reps to fix it
Better get ready
Now it's 1378 and an eighth reps to fix it

4:08 PM
Finally that old strawpoll font is gone

@Dennis Can you share your secret math tricks now? :)

@feersum :D nice

4:35 PM
;-;

@Sp3000 We lucked out again. Maybe the short answer would be obvious if I had any idea what "CM12" is supposed to be counting, but there didn't seem to be any explanation on OEIS.

generic name suggestions pls?

As far as I could tell, CM(1,2) is a generalisation of the Catalan numbers defined in terms of generating functions, the link to which I've since lost
But somehow I dunno how relevant that is :P

In what way is it a generalization?
How is it at all related to Catalan numbers?
Catalan numbers have a clear interpretation in terms of balanced parenthesis sequences.
So I would want to see something like, the generalization counts, for example, the number of sequences using 2 kinds of barckets.

Anyone here have a decreasing function from natural numbers to natural numbers?
(decreasing as in f(n) < n)

4:41 PM
f(0) < 0 seems tough.

I think this was the one, with the c(x;a) definition
oeis.org/A064062 is the relevant sequence, and I'm sure you could come up with some parenthesis equivalent, based on the "Dyck n-paths" comment

Okay, so f(1) = 1 can be whatever and for n > 1, f(n) < n

question: are short-circut ops left-associative or right-associatitive

@Sp3000 So that's a good explanation of the diagonal at least.

What does "your favourite sport" in anagol mean?
@Sp3000

4:47 PM
&& is left-associative in C++.

@LeakyNun golf

@Lynn I tried it...
Oh, it's for rejudge
CMC: 2 to the power of x multiplied by n
Specs: x and n are positive integers

æ« in Jelly, I guess?

@feersum Hmm yeah, I don't think I got the full triangle construction in the end actually... :/

4:50 PM
@Lynn sure
Wait... this is acceptable for Java?
enum A{A;int n,i;{for(;i++<500;)System.out.println(n+=i&-i);}}
Why haven't I seen it in PPCG

Because PPCG allows functions.

but I haven't seen this for full programs either

I'm sure you can find it somewhere; full programs simply aren't that common.

Can one find all constant-output challenges in anagol?

5:08 PM
Can anyone help me with this? gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/282739/… ?

@LeakyNun It's not though, I tried playing it and it didn't show that
I was on a completed file though but I suspect that would make it happen rather than not

@muddyfish According to this, it's in Navi information spot

@LeakyNun That's a completely generic list of things navi can say

5:14 PM
Alright

All text id's she can say 0x140 0x141 0x142 0x143 0x144 0x145 0x146 0x147 0x148 0x149 0x14A 0x14B 0x14C 0x14D 0x14E 0x150 0x151 0x152 0x153 0x154 0x155 0x157 0x158 0x156 0x15A 0x15B 0x15C 0x15F
0x15F is interesting because it's the only one that uses a different format for when she says it, the rest of them using in game flags

People, any CMC?

CMC: Write a CMC. Shortest CMC (in bytes) wins.

5:22 PM
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei lol
CMC:0

Jelly, 0 bytes.

@Dennis how does it work

Summons Cthulhu.

seriously

The default argument of a niladic link is 0.

5:29 PM
How is this used?

Well, if a niladic link doesn't start with a nilad, the argument has to default to something. 0 seemed like a reasonable choice atm.
I should have used Graham's number instead.

Sounds reasonable

At least it doesn't default to "Hello, world!"
4

@HelkaHomba: Is it okay if some of my outputs for your printable ASCII challenge have a trailing space?

@El'endiaStarman A trailing space, probably nope. A trailing new line, probably yes.

5:36 PM
@zyabin101 I was thinking that too.

still, let Helka Homba be the ultimate judge on that.

Hello!
Damn I hate my question rate limit.

@ColdGolf ... you are hitting the questino rate limit on PPCG?
where were you before we graduated :P

You graduated with the same design?

@Downgoat No, they posted three poorly-received questions, so they can't post any for three days.

5:43 PM
@ColdGolf We didn't get a design yet.

@zyabin101 I see.

@El'endiaStarman Two for members that can't see deletions.

Anyone here into googology?

@zyabin101 onlly mods can see deletions apparently

@zyabin101 Yeah, they self-deleted one of them.

5:46 PM
@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΨΠʹ nah im more into bingology

@Downgoat Well, actually, anyone with enough rep can see the deleted question, but they have to have the link to it, and any given user's profile won't have that link for non-mods.

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΨΠʹ What's googology?

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΨΠʹ duckduckgologist here

@Downgoat how dare you

CMC: Your task is to write code that, when the code is written all in uppercase, it displays/prints 'HELLO!", but, when the exact same code is in lowercase, it prints "hello!"

@LeakyNun ^

PHP: HELLO!

CMC: given positive integer n, find smallest m such that m*m that is divisible by n.
Testcase: 12 -> 6, 26 -> 676
@ColdGolf Almost all languages: "HELLO!"

Fine, this isn't allowed.

5:52 PM

@ColdGolf: Why is practically every challenge you come up with, in chat or otherwise, a Do X Without Y challenge?
Also, bonus if you can do my CMC without looping through every integer from 1 to m (not a requirement)

@LeakyNun Where is the "Without Y" part in my CMC?

@ColdGolf "this isn't allowed"

@LeakyNun Yes, because it's not funny anymore.
Source: @Dennis & @Doorknob et al.

Fun fact: Archimedes determined that the universe was 2 light-years across.

@LeakyNun Surely 26 -> 26?

5:55 PM
@Sp3000 Yes, I meant 26 -> 26

@LeakyNun m;f(n){while(m*m%n)m++;return m;} should work, didnt test

@LeakyNun This basically boils down to "find the product of distinct prime factors", doesn't it?

@El'endiaStarman Nope. 8 -> 4 instead of 8 -> 2

Is a mushroom considered a fruit or vegetable?

5:55 PM
@ColdGolf A fungus

@LeakyNun Oh right, it's not quite that straightforward.

@El'endiaStarman basically, ceil-div every exponent by 2

@LeakyNun Well done! Are clouds made up of liquid or gas?

@LeakyNun Jelly, 6 bytes: ÆEHĊÆẸ

^^^ that's what I was thinking

5:56 PM
The problem with golf is, usually you just skip the maths and brute force anyway

@ColdGolf solid

@LeakyNun Yeah, that. Could almost be a nice, easy main site challenge.

@LeakyNun Not quite. How much can you store on a 3.5in floppy disk?

@Dennis ugh, floating point, but I'll let this pass seeing that it's quite impossible to have 2^2^31
@ColdGolf why are you asking so many questions?

@LeakyNun Trivia. It's fun.

5:58 PM
ḍR²$TḢ is also 6 anyway

@LeakyNun ÆE would crash for those anyway. :P

> Clouds are made of tiny drops of water or ice crystals that settle on dust particles in the atmosphere.
So both solid and liquid
@ColdGolf no idea

@LeakyNun 1.44MB What material is US currency generally made up of?
CMC: Count the number of letters in the word "PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS"

Your code must be shorter than the byte count of this word, and, your code must *not* be able to accept any other input than this word.

@ColdGolf For reasons I'll never understand, 1474560 bytes.

@Dennis Heh.

6:01 PM
@ColdGolf for heaven's sake, this is one word
@ColdGolf paper
@ColdGolf Pyth, 1 byte: l

@LeakyNun Generally, around 75% cotton and and ~25% linen.

(lowercase latin letter L)

@LeakyNun Your Pyth code can accept multiple inputs.

What do you mean

"your code must not be able to accept any other input than this word."

6:03 PM
Try to make it accept multiple inputs

It shouldn't, that's the point of the CMC.

So compression again.

@LeakyNun Compression that only works for the given string.
Other strings must throw exceptions/errors.

@ColdGolf is a compression anyway.

@LeakyNun That's fine.

6:10 PM
basically equal(compressed_string, input)*input

@muddyfish and erroring
@El'endiaStarman Sure, and OEIS has it
(not unexpected)

Hey Leaky

@Sherlock9 hi

I have an Actually question for you, related to your triangle question

Alright

6:15 PM
In short, how do I do it? In long, I have the alphabet 26 times, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to place the newlines

@Dennis If your logs are getting clogged with auth attempts may I preach the gospel of Logwatch to you

CMC: Shortest code that prints/displays a longer version of itself, 2 bytes longer, then 2 more bytes each time. The longer version of itself must be able to perform the same functions of the original code.

Wow, I'm amazed that wasn't edited out
SO is getting lax

@Sherlock9 try using H and t

6:18 PM
It's a self-answered question. Probably no one saw it.

Oh, it's from 3 years ago
didn't notice

@LeakyNun Hm. That should work. Thanks

@Sherlock9 alternatively you might want to try (0xC7)

@LeakyNun I used H and t here codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/90559/47581

@Sherlock9 Actually, it's a bit long.

6:24 PM
Harhar
I'd use 0xC7 if I could figure out how to explode a string onto the stack.
I think 0xC7 only works on elements in the stack

@Sherlock9 i is your friend

You don't put elements in the stack. Jon Skeet does it for you.

@LeakyNun God bless you, sir o7

@Sherlock9 May I submit my own approach?

Go right ahead

6:38 PM
@quartata That seems like a lot of work for something I can do with grep...

Yeah, it's kind of an overkill application in this case...

@Sherlock9 Are you still testing 0xC7?

I stopped. Not sure how to get M to work well with i
Temporary stack and all

6:57 PM
Thank you very much for your suggestions
Writing up an ungolfing now

@Sherlock9 so it's my time to golf now...

I also golfed another answer based your Σ suggestion
But on a different question
