@trichoplax Oh, I thought dividing by the best. Unfortunately there are testcases where you don't need any red pixels.

@flawr Either - but my point is it's automatically calibrated, rather than having to guess the best way to score. I still would like to see an independent method I just can't think of one

@trichoplax What if we just sum[log[1+#redpixels]]

ah yes, ask about etiquette, and get an answer about definitive policy, makes sense

I guess that would mean being one red pixel behind would matter much more on test cases that only require a few red pixels, and wouldn't make as much difference on test cases that require a huge number of red pixels, which sounds desirable

7:04 PM
Right, that doesn't make sense at all

@flawr .....eh? I agree with trichoplax - it's desirable to weight individual red pixels more on test cases that require fewer of them.

Mini-challenge: form a standard 6-letter English word using any 3 distinct vowels plus 3 alphabetically consecutive consonants (in any order in the word)

@flawr Sorry about my wording - @El'endiaStarman golfed it down nicely so hopefully that's more understandable

@HelkaHomba Would mnp be three alphabetically consecutive consonants?

Ah..

7:13 PM
@El'endiaStarman No. Vowels in between not allowed.

hm well it is about the same as just multiplying all the scores...

Can y count as a vowel and a consonant?

@flawr So if the optimal solution is 10 red pixels, and you have 11, that's quite bad. But if the optimal solution is 1,000,000 red pixels and you have 1,000,001, that's excellent. Just summing the scores would treat those two cases equally, but your log approach rewards the second test case much more, as it should be

@BusinessCat Yes, either. If it is used accordingly in the word

does oyster count?

7:16 PM
I think it would

Hmm. I don't think the y is used as a vowel there.

@TimmyD Yes, great answer. I once read a book about English phonology and phonetics. This is advanced stuff

@flawr sum(log()) is like log(product()), right? so the order of scores will be the same as for just product(). Just depends which is easier to calculate.

@HelkaHomba codify

hmm, i think of y as consonant in e.g. "your", but as vowel here, similar to "o" + "i"

7:17 PM
@trichoplax definitely sum(log())

@MitchSchwartz Either way this is very close to the word I was thinking!
4 mins ago, by Helka Homba
@El'endiaStarman No. Vowels in between not allowed.

ah, I see

@flawr I think the only question now is whether that biases the scores enough to balance the sizes of the test cases. If not, you could use the product of squared scores instead of just the product

cd-e-f are not consecutive consonants

I've found a few with 2 vowels, but with 3 it's hard

7:19 PM
@trichoplax so 2*sum(log()), it seams that doesnt make any difference. You're just squaring the whole thing

ouster is a word, but i didn't know it until playing with the dictionary

storey? I don't think they spell it like the in the US though.

@MitchSchwartz Nice!
@BusinessCat That works too

@flawr No that wouldn't change the order from just sum(log()). Good point. I need to think more...

Lemony

7:21 PM
I was thinking orates. rst seems easiest

menial

nice

is there a comparison sort that takes the absolute value of the compare() function to estimate where it will go?

found abduce

squire

7:23 PM
aka, negative numbers still means "less than" but whether your compare function returns -5 vs -1, it'll try to use that information to estimate (and get fewer comparisons on average)

@flawr I think just taking the product of the scores might be good enough. This means being 10% more than an opponent's score will have a similar effect on your overall score regardless of the size of the test case.

That means that I cannot make any test cases that need no pixels, right?

bodice

@flawr Your approach of adding 1 to each test score seems to work
@flawr If Alice does well at a large test case but badly at a small test case, and Bob does well at a small test case but badly at a large test case, which do you want to score higher?

7:31 PM
@HelkaHomba You missed out "all of the above" :P

@HelkaHomba Too bad the crepes option has lemon. Take that out and that'd be my preference. Tuna is disgusting.

I said it anyway, even though it would be better without lemons

@HelkaHomba Would this be, like, my main entree?

Yes, for dinner

All three options sound delicious but I don't think I'd want to have just a giant plate of au gratin potatoes or crepes
Going with tuna melt

Do people in Europe eat the thick pancakes like people in the US do? Or is it just thin stuff like crêpes and lefse and the like?

I mean, really fluffy buttermilk pancakes here in the US can get to like 1cm thick

What pancake actually means varies greatly from state to state in Germany.

In the UK, AFAIK the general pancake is a thin crepe-type thing

@mınxomaτ Can it mean these?

@mınxomaτ I'd say they're entirely justified if someone calls that a pancake

A pancake is a cake that you cook in a pan

I don't think anyone in the US would consider that a pancake

@Mego The other word for this is "Berliner"

If you cook it in an oven, it's not a pancake. It's a regular cake.

@mınxomaτ Ah, the "I am a jelly donut" phrasing

Q: Coating Every Pancake

Helka HombaYou have a stack of pancakes on a plate with a glob of syrup on top so thick it can't run down the sides. You won't be happy to eat until both faces of each pancake have at least touched the syrup, but right now only one face of the top pancake has. You know that the syrup will never soak throug...

TL;DR: The word pancake ("Pfannkuchen") literally means three completely different things in Germany. One of them is made from potatoes.

@quartata Because they're Germans, not French. Jeez did you not learn geography? :P
