@Katenkyo Development takes time. Like a long time. Even if they had a lot of the systems from Ingress, they still had to convert it to Pokemon. Finding/catching Pokemon and gyms are completely new, and are pretty complex systems. Most of the items in PoGo don't have Ingress parallels. Plus, 3-team gameplay is more complex than 2-team gameplay.

@Mego And now they are probably busy putting out fires in the server rooms. Doesn't help that people in countries where PG isn't available yet are essentially DDoSing the servers with unofficial APKs.

In the 60s, Marvin Minsky assigned a couple of undergrads to spend the summer programming a computer to use a camera to identify objects in a scene. He figured they'd have the problem solved by the end of the summer. Half a century later, we're still working on it.

@Katenkyo Because nobody can be prepared for a global release of something that requires central servers. Developers and publishers are barely ever ready for just a North America release of games. Millions of players at the same time will stress even the beefiest server setups, and you can't just "add more servers" - servers don't grow on trees.

Especially when you consider that average and peak player counts will drastically go down after a few weeks, regardless of the game.

What most developers do is make conservative initial estimates, maybe add a few more servers during the launch, and then scale appropriately once the initial hype has died down, based on how many players they retain.

It's easy to add more servers. It's not so easy to remove servers - you've already paid for them, and if they go unutilized/underutilized, that's a waste of money.

@Mego Actually, in more enterprise situations, physical servers may be added and removed on a daily basis with little to no additional cost.

Well, it says 64km in game, but it's ridiculously bad at tracking. I usually get 0.5-0.7km from what I know is a 1km looped path.

Meh. Android's Fit app tracks it just fine, and I'm fairly sure it uses GPS too.

Well, not perfectly, but closer to the 90% range.
