7:31 AM
hi all

hey @Lembik
how's the bountied challenge?

hi @charredgrass
@charredgrass disaster!

I tried to write something but failed miserably because I don't understand capture groups well enough
However, I liked trying because I learned a lot about backrefs and capturing groups

@charredgrass I don't understand what you tried to do!
how can you use a regex for this problem?

idk man, just tried to do runs and stuff
turns out it totally doesnt work out as well as I thought it would

7:42 AM
sure but how do you do runs using a regex?
it sounds interesting :)

well, it didn't work

ah ok

but I tried something along the lines of splitting up the string and doing /([a-zA-Z]*)\1+/

can you tell if one string is periodic using a regex?
that seems like a nice question

@charredgrass looks like you're missing a bracket.

7:45 AM
what are you talking about, it's there ;)

I am tempted to ask on SO if you can tell if a string is periodic using a regex
unless there are any regex experts here

There are a lot of regexperts here.

bring out the regexperts!

do you think I could use something like /[\u202e-\uffff]/ to match any unicode characters in that range? I should test that
to Regex101!

7:50 AM
idk, just looking to see if there's any way to do it at all
I have no practical use for it, I'm just bored

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I am very flexible. How about anything that python re can do
@charredgrass :)

ooh, nonascii matcher /[^\x00-\x7F]+/

I actually have never used python re, even though I really like both python and regex.
For whatever reason, regexes in python feel... I don't know, unnatural?

Yeah

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan yes.. they were stuck on when perl people complained that python wasn't didn't have builtin regex support
the compile step is particularly mysterious to me

7:55 AM
hooray, it worked, my regex indeed did not match 🐊🐴🐤🐤🐊🐥

@charredgrass what worked exactly?
and how on earth do you do those little icons?

regex to capture specific unicode emoji

aha
and how do you make the pictures in chat?

magic! (copy-paste)

8:00 AM
Interesting. 👋👋🏻👋🏼👋🏽👋🏾👋🏿 all these hands, when viewed on a supported browser/device/field, show up in different races. The default one is 2 bytes and is 👋 and the others are combinations of the previous one and what looks like some modifier, similar to unicode diacritics.

@Downgoat Good news: Vigor is almost caught up with (actually, ahead of) V. Then I can close this. The only missing feature is some commands end implicitly to take off 1 or 2 bytes.

do the different regex versions have names? For example, regex supported by python re?

ah, finally. got /(?:👋[🏻🏼🏽🏾🏿]?)*/ to match all races of hands

8:16 AM
Here's a plug for a wannabe Code Golf challenge at Puzzling SE, where it will probably get little interest:

(for what it's worth ... couldn't think of any other place to mention it)

stupid 5 digit hex unicode

@charredgrass \b(\w*)(\w+\1)\2+\b seems to match a periodic word
which is cool

cool
you just write that? or found it?

I didn't event it
found
that's all I can do :)
@charredgrass not it's not a regular expression
but many regex libraries allow you to do naughty things like backreferences

true
Finally got devised myself the RegEx "race-agnostic" snippet [🏻🏼🏽🏾🏿]? to be appended to any emoji in regex, it will match any race if the race is customizable
what the hell am I doing with my life
Hooray, I finally got my language to compile a file!
👋🌎 now compiles to console.log("Hello World!");

8:47 AM
@charredgrass so it looks like your regex idea for my challenge should work

I don't see the problem with keybord :p

@charredgrass How does that program work?

That's what it is, it's a node script to compile stuff
At the moment, it pretty much just replaces the specific emojis with the Hello World statement.

9:03 AM
@charredgrass If you add more stuff, it could be useful in code golf to avoid reallyLongFunctionNames.

wouldn't it do the opposite?

@gcampbell Yep, that's the plan! Most of my js answers are very heavy in bytes

because the emojis are at least 2 bytes

Yes, but it would be shorter than .length to have just a 2-byte emoji

@charredgrass You could also use it as a dumb preprocessor.

9:06 AM
So, how do you plan to have the language work in such a way that it is not just preset programs being selected?

@Fatalize Oh, thanks, I'll fix that

@DestructibleWatermelon It's very similar to Pyth. During compilation it basically replaces the placeholders with small snippets of code.

is 👋 the console log part, and 🌎 is a variable holding "hello, world!"?

No, although it will be in the future
I was just testing to see how my program handles unicode
and it worked wonderfully

9:45 AM
> ret = ret.replace(/👋🌎/, "console.log(\"Hello World\");");
0/10

hey, just testing if unicode works with js regex

Why wouldn't it?

^
It's not 1970.

These emoji worked really weirdly on regex101
It;'s because I was trying to match race of the hands

Notes:
Make the interpreter auto-output the final result
Don't use replaces, create a tokenizer (the easiest way right now is probably to just lookup the character in an object, then replace)

9:51 AM
@MᴀʀsUʟᴛᴏʀ thanks
it's still just a toy I've been messing with
I just realized, the regex doesn't even have the g flag :P

1 hour later…
10:55 AM
So I was feeling particularly vain this morning and decided to search for my name in chat. :-)
Seems there are 2 common themes - 'who he?' (fair enough), and 'I tried to get him to post that sandboxed question'.

@Gareth Didn't notice you lurking, SE says you've been here since... 2011? o_O

@LegionMammal978 Yes, I really am that old. :-)
I think I've left enough time since the 'Help Mr Jones to enjoy his bicycle round-trip' question as suggested by dmckee when I first posted the question in the sandbox. :-)

And I thought my couple of Sandbox ideas were sitting around for too long...
@Gareth Fun fact: I have 375 answers but only one question

@LegionMammal978 To be fair, when I posted it there were only a couple of new questions every day and it was really similar. So I abandoned it thinking it would never see the light of day again. I think it only really started gathering up-votes once all the old sandboxes were merged into one, by which time no-one remembered the bicycle round-trip question.

@Gareth Old sandboxes? Only been here for a year and a half

11:10 AM
Not sure whether to keep the different sections of track /-\|as currently specified or change it to a single character - would that make it too simple?

@Gareth Haven't seen the challenge, could you post a link?

@LegionMammal978 It used to be that when the sandbox got too full it would be retired and a new sandbox question created. My question was in the first sandbox meta question. When they got to about 10 they decided to merge them all to tidy things up a bit.

@/all is a circular right click menu better than a list?

@MᴀʀsUʟᴛᴏʀ I don't think @everyone is listening :p

11:13 AM
@LegionMammal978 fixed

@MᴀʀsUʟᴛᴏʀ Or @/all :P

Q: Power Grid Resource Costs

There are four types of resource used in the game (five, if you include renewable energy, but obviously you can't buy resources for that)...

@MatthewRoh Don't argue with trolls. the more you talk about and whinge about pokemon go, the stronger it's gonna become

user214599
BGA Is cool

I would like to be able to mount a very large zip file so you can read and write files to and from it without decompressing the whole file. Is that doable?

user214599
2:00 PM
That's an iso (Or possibly a zip bomb)

@MatthewRoh are iso's compressed and do you uncompress them all when mounting them?

user214599
Newer Windows versions like Windows 8 supports mounting them without uncompressing I think.

@Lembik be careful as you will have to re-compress the zip file each time you modify one of its files

@Katenkyo that's bad
@Katenkyo ok how about if I just want to read some files but don't want to uncompress the whole thing?

@Lembik Yes, but necessary to maintain the compression

2:04 PM
I don't even know how to do that

@Lembik Isn't that the default comportment?
(with windows)

user214599
Can't WinRAR just do that?

@MatthewRoh I think it does

user214599
Hi @Dennis !

That's how I work on compressed&protected by passphrase archives

2:07 PM
hi @Dennis

@Katenkyo hmm.. I am in linux

I'm finished playing Seasons at BGA, and now can chat normally.

I will take a closer look. ..thanks

@Lembik can't help you there, only working with .tar.gz under linux ^^
(more precisely, I usually only work through a terminal for linux)

@Katenkyo right.. me too!
@Katenkyo me too :)
@Katenkyo can you access one of the files from a tar.gz from the command line without decompressing it all?

user214599
2:13 PM
Then its the time to use the magic of apt-get!

user214599
(Yes, I have used linux, more exactly, kubuntu.)

@Lembik I know that you can list them, but never tried to access them (and I doubt you can)

@Katenkyo ah ok

@Lembik but from what I see in the man tar, I think it's not possible

@Katenkyo not possible sounds like a coding challenge to me :)

2:19 PM
@Lembik Hum, not for this site anyway
It'sa full software by itself that you need to develop
You have to be able to decompress one file from a compressed archive, not really the easiest thing
Hum, wait
I think there's a way
But you'll have to extract the file and then put it back in by hand

user214599
@Katenkyo The_Best_Method = apt-get;

@MatthewRoh I'm sorry, but I'm a yum user

Undefined variable apt. Undefined variable get.

Anonymous
@Katenkyo You need a compression method that can compress multiple files and decompress a single file at a time. Preferably one that keeps a table of sorts and can easily have the contents of one file modified without messing up the others. Essentially, you need a filesystem that supports transparent compression. Luckily, such a thing exists.

Anonymous
2:35 PM
Using OpenZFS for compressed filesystems on Linux might be a bit overkill, but it does the job well.

@Lembik ^
Also @Mego thanks for the intel, didn't know how to do this with unix

Oh whoops I didn't pay attention to who originally asked the question :P

Then test it yourself instead of always asking other people to do things for you?

@Mego I can't test it myself.

Your constant begging for people to do your work for you is annoying. You mention the chatiquette frequently, but it seems you haven't actually read it: Stay on-topic with questions, and avoiding asking unrelated "homework" questions.

2:42 PM
Alright, I'll ask in some other room.

Anonymous
If it's clear that nobody else is interested in helping you, then stop begging for people to sacrifice their time to do things that you could have done yourself in the time that you've been begging.

Anonymous
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 No, that's not the solution. The solution is to do it yourself, and stop begging people to do your work for you.

Alright then, I'll ask Downgoat on how to call the onmessage function from the JS console on an arbitrary message.
