Wouldn't that only work with arrays of numbers?

@quartata arrays are completely borked. i dont even wanna think about them >_>

@Downgoat well, why not store them as a dynamic-sized array of arrays?

@dorukayhan ?

@Downgoat i mean, you can represent the arrays as something like a var[][] somewhere in the interpreter

why would i do that?

12:14 AM
@Downgoat isn't it more bug-resistant?

i don't think so

12:28 AM
@Downgoat i ask because i totally think it segfaults because it can't handle the gaotiness

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ oh ok. i understand if gaots r to cool for quartata.

@HelkaHomba yeah, and the same video you just watched also.... >_>
@Downgoat ikr
he doesn't like phlog pyro so he must have problesm anyway

and he likes php

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I will literally duel you regular pyro vs phlog pyro

12:29 AM
nah

And then you'll get it

@quartata what is so bad about phlog

Actually, even better. I'll play phlog pyro and you regular pyro

@Downgoat no airblast plus particle hitboxes

12:30 AM
phlog is best but rainblower is best for comp

what about the MMMMMPH thing

dumb

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

o_O
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ @TimmyD 1 fucked up thing about windows: Backslashes in filepaths.
just why

12:35 AM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ oh and the fact that it doesn't support bash

eh
@HelkaHomba in what language?

\o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ I made something big in cheddar in like 30 minutes and it worked first try!!!!

@flawr Yeah, though the bot flocks one was more generic iirc so using that code might be better than RvB
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Stackylogic

1:00 AM
@Downgoat I cheddar ready for this yet?

Y U DO DIS ;_____;
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO COMMIT
;_____;
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan wait I already did commit ;)

I think if the code was already written but the commit was 10 minutes or less late, it's not really a big deal.
@Downgoat Oh, nvmd then. Glad to hear it! \0/

the code that wasn't committed is unrelated. It's with booleans
> For example, for the string "abba ollo", you must output "abba" or "ollo",
shouldn't it be:
> For example, for the string "abba ollo", you must output "ab|ba" or "ol|lo",
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan

@Downgoat What are you talking about? That's what I said!
And if you look through the edit history, you'll see that the original revision said the same thing!

ಠ_ಠ

1:05 AM
Also, FYI, I decided to rewrite V nearly from scratch.
It should be less buggy and easier to extend down the road.

:S
idk that sounds like itll take a lot fo time
shit. nested fors don't work ;___;
@chedr y u do dis to gaot ;_;

@Downgoat I guess, but it will be way easier and faster since I've already figured out the hard stuff and the overall design is much simpler.

Q: Where should I put my mirror?

Dr Green Eggs and Iron ManThis is a mirror: |. I just found out that you can stick a mirror in the middle of a string if the string can be mirrored on itself! For example, the string abccba. If you cut it in half the two halves are mirror images of each other: abc <--> cba So, we can stick a mirror in the middle of t...

what should be the operator to copy a variable?

Also, most of it will be in vimscript rather than python, which should help it run smoother.

1:11 AM
i.e. to return a copy of the var rather than a reference
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan as long as you code it in javascript I'm ok ;P

Pass the original as an arg to the constructer?
@Downgoat Hahaha, hahaha, haha, ha. NO.

no it has to be operator
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan ;_;
I was thinking & like C but idk

Also, I don't there's a js-vim bridge.

Wait what does a = &b do in C?

@Downgoat: JS code golf for maximum of an array, go!

1:14 AM
@El'endiaStarman gimme a second

@Downgoat depends on the types.
@Downgoat if a is a pointer to foo, and b is a foo, if sets a to point to b.

@El'endiaStarman yeah it's Math.max(...a)

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan wait wat
then how to copy variable in C

Looks like the situation I have isn't set up for that. That's okay though, I already wrote the code I needed. :P

1:18 AM
@El'endiaStarman ?
@Maltysen can u halp bug test cheddar for loops pls

@Downgoat just a = b. Unless they're structs.

@Downgoat repl?

@Maltysen ?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan even if they're structs

@Downgoat where do I do the bug testing?

1:21 AM
It's if it's a pointer to a struct

@HelkaHomba link?

@Maltysen oh. lemme update repl
online REPL should be updated now

@quartata Oh, I didn't realize that. I thought you needed something more complicated.
@Downgoat you should learn C. It's kinda sucky to work with, but you learn a ton and appreciate all the other languages more.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I did know C but never bothered to learn & :|

Really? & is fairly common.

1:26 AM
idk. * is really common, never saw & too often
[[1][0],[2][0],[3][0]][1] who came up with this syntax
@Quill do you know if istanbul weights folders when calculating the total average coverage

@Downgoat I doubt it, why?

I have the code for IO.prompt() which is sync, so I can't really test it, so it's driving my coverage way down
;_;
What's reduce in pyth? I'm trying to do .U and use b but it's not wokring :/

@Downgoat F is implicit
u is explicit

thanks

@Quill I thought you answered Downgoat, not malty.
>_>
You need to learn an esoteric language.

1:43 AM
Hello @HelkaHomba

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Only exists in my head now

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ who are you talking to?
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Do you have Downgoat on ignore or something? :p

@Quill @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ wait wat ;_;
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ do you know what would be the most efficient way to split a string. Into substrings, where each substring has a maximum length of N?

@Downgoat efficient or golfy?

1:59 AM
@Maltysen efficient as in speed
what would you call a function that takes an array and divides it into N pieces?

@Downgoat loop through all possible start indicies, and for each loop through all lengths from the index on
like for i in range(len(string)):for l in range(len(string)-i): yield string[i:k]
something like ^ prolly messed up end behavior

@Maltysen but you have nested loops which will probably be very slow

It is a generator

but i need it to be non-generator

oops I made a mistake and I can't edit

2:08 AM
what mistake?

@Downgoat Why? Generators are incredibly useful for this sort od thing

@quartata yeah but in my case generators aren't applicable

@Quill just delete it while I type a new one if you can
On mobile so ths is slightly painful
@Downgoat ? Why not?

@Downgoat Does cheddar support tuples?

substring = ""
for c in string:
  substring += c
  if(len(substring) == n):
    yield substring
    substring = ""
yield substring
better pseudoode
crap @Quill can you move the last yield back two spaces
Thanks. I forgot how much old mobile ui sucked

2:16 AM
@Quill o_O
@HelkaHomba k

@Downgoat if js doesn't have generators it is pretty easy to implement your own lazy linked list

@quartata JS has generator notation like this: function*()

2:37 AM
@quartata cause they aren't ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Downgoat 10/10 great excuse

thx

np

so I need to finalize on function syntax. Does the following look good:
-> (arg1, arg2) arg1 + arg2
-> (arg1, arg2) { arg1 + arg2 }
=> 1 + 1
wait s/function syntax/lambda syntax/

use JS lambda syntax

2:45 AM
i dont like it
i mean i like it
but I forgot the reason I don't
oh yeah, it was because I didn't want the following:

Syntax looks good, kinda like Ruby's

wait idk ;_;
@quartata ok
Should I use -> or =>
ohhh, it was because this looks good:
foo.map(thing -> (item) item - 1)
.filter(thing)

Not sure why you need a separate =>. i don't think it would be ambiguous

@quartata ?

Like why can't you just have -> 1 + 1

2:51 AM
40 mins ago, by Dr Green Eggs and Iron Man
@Downgoat Does cheddar support tuples?

@quartata I'll probably do it but I'll have to see if the parsing works as i'm not using LA parser

I think a certain goat who may or may not be correctly vertically oriented is ignoring me.

Tuples are just immutable lists and I think Cheddar has a immutable metatype

> /r/UnexpectedKoolAidMan
wat

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan idk i guess

3:11 AM
Hey downgoat

@thepiercingarrow Hey

3:28 AM
@bkul Hey Be Cool

@thepiercingarrow hello

@thepiercingarrow I haven't seen you around here before. Welcome!

@bkul Thanks :)
@Downgoat Are you free for a few minuetes?

3:46 AM
@thepiercingarrow yeah?

@Downgoat Its about cheddar

i think i have an idea for cheddar

@dorukayhan Cool what?

add an undocumented built-in that asks a question about advacado from stdout!

hmm
Good idea!
Or easter eggs for printing alvacado's to stderr!

4:00 AM
I disagree. The avocado meme:

reconsiders decision to lock memes thread, considers deletion
3

@thepiercingarrow yeah?
@dorukayhan ಠ_ಠ A) avocad meme is old B) memes were killed by mods so can't

@Downgoat How were memes killed by mods?
@Downgoat Actually just realized its not about cheddar - its about SE chat bots.

@thepiercingarrow locked and discouraged from use

@Dennis Historical Lock all of teh tings!

4:04 AM
@Downgoat :(

^

@Quill We did. It doesn't seem to have helped though.

@thepiercingarrow elaborate...

> This question exists because it has historical significance, but it is not considered a good, on-topic question for this site, so please do not use it as evidence that you can ask similar questions here. This question and its answers are frozen and cannot be changed. More info: help center.

@Downgoat I am reading your chatbot for inspiration in helping me write my goat, but i'm not understanding all of your code.

4:06 AM
@Dennis You can kill a post, but you can't kill an idea

@thepiercingarrow My code isn't that clear but it's some basic frequency analysis on each word and then filters some bad data and creates a response template (I'll elaborate later)

You can only hope everyone forgets

@Quill O_O i was just about to post the same thing ._.
@Dennis if people find avocad funny there's nothing you can do to stop that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Watch me...

@Dennis

4:08 AM
@Dennis also, should they be a policy on rickrolls? They are practically spam

STAHP

@Dennis ._.

DON'T TOUCH DELETE
JUST NO

@Downgoat there is a policy for some rickrolls

@Downgoat They seem to have gotten rarer though.

4:10 AM
@Downgoat Err, I may not be the most adequate person to talk about that. >_>
Might be worth adding to chatiquette though.

@Downgoat Put it this way: There's two ways to "solve the problem"; The easy way and the hard way. Both involve tears and moderator intervention. So far Dennis and co. have been taking it the easy way, just pray you never see the hard way ;-)

@Quill Excellent way to put it. :D

@Downgoat How do you detect an edit?

@HelkaHomba iTunes tells me I have 38 plays for that song

@Quill Ah, the four pilars of SE: questions, answers, tears, and moderator intervention

4:18 AM
@Dennis If ppcg.github.io/chatiquette are going to more or less be official chat guidelines, why not put them in a meta post? As is the only way I knew how to find them was searching for "chatiquette" in chat history.

It's in the room description.

I'm not sure how many TNB regulars frequent Meta.

"Ah, the four pilars of SE: questions, answers, tears, and moderator intervention" what about reputation?

Well still. Putting this kind of stuff elsewhere (even if it is only github) seems unsustainable in the long term and slightly anti-democratic.
Like if there are ever new mods who want to edit the chatiquette, they'll need permission on github rather than using the SE privileges they already have.
^^ @Doorknob @AlexA. @MartinEnder

4:26 AM
Chat related Meta posts are okay as long as they don't get waaaaaaaaaaay too specific
like discussing room description or something

@Quill I don't like what your getting at
@HelkaHomba wait why wasn't chatertiquette meta post

@Quill Sure. I just don't like the idea of needlessly sundering certain site content from the site
@Downgoat idk, that's what I'm asking @Dennis & co.

@Downgoat I'm not threatening anyone, I'm trying to point out that this issue is painful no matter what approach you take. The PPCG mods aren't trying to be a buzzkill, they just want the room to be more friendly

@Downgoat How do you detect an edit?

user image
3
^ 50 stars please :P

4:37 AM
XD XD XD
Hold on let me find my other 49 accounts... :P

@HelkaHomba It's not 4th of July yet in california but ok
@thepiercingarrow you can detect the mutationEvent with a (i think) MutationObserver. Also, when chat messages are added they have a fade effect which you can detect as it's done through a CSS classs

@Downgoat hm. So I'll have to inject js?

@thepiercingarrow not sure, lemme pull up chatgoat's source

How's this syntax for matrix creation:
 [ 1 2 3;
   3 4 5;
   5 6 7 ]
I can't think of anthing else >_>

4:47 AM
Usually it's newlines or ;.

hm :/ okay. Maybe commas
[ 1, 2, 3;
  4, 5, 6;
  7, 8, 9 ]

@Downgoat How about:

[ [1, 2, 3],
  [4, 5, 6],
  [7, 8, 9] ]

I like how Julia does it. Commas for vectors, spaces and newlines/semicolons for matrices. If you use commas for vectors and matrices, it will be difficult to differentiate between vectors and matrices with only one row/column.

4:51 AM
@Downgoat This is more intuitive

@thepiercingarrow that's a regular 2d array tho

@Downgoat exactly.
@Downgoat Do you really need built-in matrices? You can just construct a wrapper class around 2d arrays and add it to your standard library or something.

@flawr: I see now why PE 312 requires efficient calculation of a**b**c mod n. I'll get to work on a solution tomorrow.

@thepiercingarrow yes

@Downgoat why?

Q: Parse and Process the Key-Language Input

R. KapLet's parse and process Key-Language! Given the input of a sequence of keyboard keypresses and/or special keys, output the product when all the actions are processed based on the following keyboard: +-------------------------------------------------------+ | ~ | ! | @ | # | $ | % | ^ | & | * | (...

Obvious Self-Advertisement is Obvious
Bye

Hi R. Kap
I was actually working on that yesterday, but it was well over 400 bytes, so I gave up.

@thepiercingarrow I actually am currently doing it right now, and it is also well over 400 bytes. 431 bytes is the length to be exact.
@thepiercingarrow What language were you trying to write the solution in?

@thepiercingarrow Ah, I "C".
:P

XD lol. It would have been easier if you have made each combo (for example <SHFT>) exactly 3 letters (for example <SFT> or <SHT>).

5:27 AM
@thepiercingarrow Well, challenges are not meant to be easy now, are they?
That is pretty much why I used 4 characters for each "special" key.
Not too tedious to implement, yet still pretty hard to golf.

But <DEL> is three keys D:

@thepiercingarrow Well, for most of the keys.
Okay, for 2 keys.
Hello @MartinEnder

@HelkaHomba I'm not sure it's supposed to be democratic. We're still a part of SE which prides itself on being a professional community. Even if the majority of this room wants to be able to post random nonsense all the time, I don't think they should get to do so.
Regardless of that, putting it on meta lets the wrong people vote on it, so it isn't really democratic in a useful way either.

@MartinEnder No "Hello" or something similar back? Okay...

sorry, still catching up on things. hello :P

5:39 AM
@MartinEnder You know, I just have to say, you are really really good at writing and answering challenges. I really admire that. :)

@MartinEnder Not letting people vote because you think they're wrong seems like a poor excuse :/

@HelkaHomba If you replied to the message you meant to reply to, then I probably phrased that badly. I meant if you put it on meta, you'll let people vote on it, who don't even visit chat (whereas some people who visit chat might not vote on it).

@MartinEnder Think you can write a regular expression to parse the input for the following challenge?
6
Q: Parse and Process the Key-Language Input

R. KapLet's parse and process Key-Language! Maybe beat @LeakyNun's answer (which you probably can since you actually created Retina)?

@R.Kap I'm not sure what you mean by that. You can't really parse things with regex. You can either validate the input format or you could tokenise it.

@MartinEnder FWIW that "professional community" is where we hate fun, many sites have "meme posts" (like the one we just had locked) and one of the biggest sites on the network has the top question titled "How can I tell if a corpse is safe to eat". Clearly, just being on the SE network is not enough justification to say memes can not be used.

5:49 AM
@MartinEnder Okay, I phrased it badly. I meant to ask if you could write a regular expression answer for the challenge (maybe in your language Retina) as you do say in your profile bio that you have used Regular Expressions several times for what they were not meant to be used for. I want to see if you can do the same thing for my challenge. :)

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I'm not sure what one has to do with the other. Having community-specific memes or inside jokes or having funny titles is very different from posting walls of carets, avocados and wat GIFs. Although I don't know about anyone else, but I personally was able to have fun in this room without people posting lots of noise.
@R.Kap alright. well with a single regex it's definitely impossible, but I can look into writing another Retina answer later if I have the time.

@MartinEnder All right, cool! That would be awesome! Thanks! :)

@MartinEnder I suppose I'm just having a knee-jerk reaction since scrolling up and reading through some of the recent TNB history looks like we're trying to kill off all memes under any circumstance.
I don't think putting a total end to all "memes" is possible or even a good idea if it was.
For example:
2 hours ago, by Dennis
reconsiders decision to lock memes thread, considers deletion
and
2 hours ago, by Dennis
Watch me...

No, don't kill off all memes. Doge will be sad...

@MartinEnder Personally I don't mind fewer memes. I'm sick of some of them. My issue is that rules are being written outside of PPCG community's control, so to speak

6:06 AM
@HelkaHomba completely agree. I like chatiquette, just wish it could be put in a meta post
(also want the quote back :P)

I thought phinotpi had the quote.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan It's kinda crazy how everyone gets worked up about memes when they aren't mentioned in the chatiquette with one word. The chatiquette is mostly about being respectful, welcoming and not annoying people. And no one seems to acknowledge that we have a serious problem with those things. I don't have a problem with the occasional (remotely appropriate) meme, but spamming this room with random shit isn't a meme.

@MartinEnder If that "random shit" is doge, then it is a meme.

It doesn't matter whether it's a doge, a "^", an interesting link or a helpful comment. When the same thing is posted 10 times in a row, it's spam.
5

@MartinEnder I'd absolutely agree that we have a signal:noise problem, (or that posting something 10 times in a row is spam) but does locking (or maybe even deleting?) the memes page fix that?
And yeah, the chatiquette doesn't directly mention "memes" (Except it doesn't mention, a couple of them) since the locking and the chatiquette came at the same time, they seem very related.

6:16 AM
It's a historical lock, that doesn't mean we refuse to ignore that they existed, that means we refuse to make new ones
They didn't delete the post

Yes, but they (or at least Dennis) are talking about deleting it.

Just because they put a fence around Stonehenge doesn't mean it's not there anymore

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan i think things are just getting so bad, they're not sure what to do anymore

My personal take on locking the memes post is that it didn't satisfy its purpose. It's mostly memes of TNB, not memes of PPCG, and most of it is "haha we so funny because we do this all the time". I really enjoyed reading through the memes posts of other communities because they're relatable and you stumble across them even if you do not frequent their chat.
I don't see anyone who isn't a regular of this room to be interested in that post.

@MartinEnder true, the only one I can recall that was applicable to main was crossed out 44

6:18 AM
And absurd rationales for short code.
And java.
And graduation.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Dennis is talking about deleting it because everyone loves to beat the dead horse and continue with the overly annoying jokes

implying Java is a meme...
and graduation was absolutely TNB-specific
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I assumed it was a joke, but you'd have to ask Dennis.
anyway, I should probably get to work...

a bit too late?

Name anagrams and outgolfing dennis are also very applicable to main.

> It's mostly memes of TNB

6:22 AM
Why do we actually care that the memes post was locked?
What purpose did it serve beforehand?

adding more memes

@Quill I feel like a few people are having the reaction that "ERRRR MY GAWD THE FUN POLICE ARE KILLING EVERYTHING I MUST SPEAK UP ABOUT THIS BY SPAMMING SEVEN BILLION AVOCADS" which just makes everything worse

Hmm. I see that checking in on chat before bed served no purpose. Umm, goodnight?

@Geobits nah, now that you're here you won't be going to bed for at least another couple hours

6:25 AM
@Geobits did it ever?

@Maltysen Don't count on that ;)

The memes post was a dead horse factory, only making corpses for childish enjoyment

Some of it was. Particularly avocado.
Most of it was not that bad.

@Quill you mean a glue factory? >_>

> A guideline is a statement by which to determine a course of action. A guideline aims to streamline particular processes according to a set routine or sound practice. By definition, following a guideline is never mandatory. Guidelines are not binding and are not enforced.

@MartinEnder competition = fun

7:04 AM
Can anyone explain to me why this and this produce different results?

 Retina

Discussion about the Retina programming language, including us...

7:20 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I've never seen any signal:noise problem in this room, and I find it annoying that we should put some rules and forbid some comportment when this chat was going well without that
Also, I think it's worth saying I'm European, so I only see what happens between 8:00 GMT and 20:00 GMT

@Katenkyo hi
use lua to finish the mirror challenge xd

user214599
@Dennis Have you ever seen a combination of king-of-the-hill and cops-and-robbers?

@Katenkyo si tu ne le fais je le ferrai

@LeakyNun I didn't see a lua answer yet.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan that's why I'm telling him to

7:25 AM
You should do a vim answer. That would blow my mind!

Anonymous
@Katenkyo Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. The issues are much more prominent during daytime in the United States (so between 17:00 GMT and 01:00 GMT). Thankfully, since the meta post about the issue, it's gotten better, but it's still there.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan No idea how

@LeakyNun Same here, that's why it would blow my mind.

@LeakyNun Hi, I don't have time to play around with Lua right now, so feel free to do it :)

7:26 AM
Also, I agree with Mego. I was going to post a couple carets, but I feel like that would be self-defeating.

@Katenkyo d'accord

@Mego I know that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but it's frustrating to be told "Yeah, we have some problem, so here is some limitations" when the half of the day you're here, there's no problem.

Well tbf, the "limitations" aren't that extreme.

Anonymous
After the discussions about the meme thread, I'm more in favor of keeping it locked. It was mainly "memes of TNB" and not "memes of PPCG", and so wasn't really on-topic for Meta. If it were to be unlocked, I'd like to see a huge cleanup of the "content" there, keeping only the memes that truly apply to PPCG and not just this chatroom.

Anonymous
And if it gets deleted, I won't be too heartbroken.

7:28 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I think a single caret can be good to give value to an opinion, it says it's author isn't the only one to think that. The problem comes from chain of carets

@Mego I'm OK with keeping it locked, but I would be very opposed to deleting it.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Same here, would like to see it stay locked or cleaned up

Anonymous
@Katenkyo "Limitations" is not a good word. The mods put together some simple guidelines for what constitutes effective chatting rather than pointless drivel and spam (which I believe a majority of this room's users agree with), and asked us to follow them. And again, you don't see the problem because you're often not around when the problem is happening.

Regardless, I am still firmly in the belief that the issues stem from a few users being particularly noisy, drowning out the useful signal of the majority.

@Mego I think it is, because that's how I feel about them. I was already following my own etiquette which is part of my online identity. It's mostly the same as the (un)official chattiquette, but once someone's here to tell me to follow these guidelines, I'm not free anymore to make my comportment evolve with time : it depends of the guideline. Meaning it's limitations.
Also, as I said, I don't see that as a problem, it's pure frustration and childish reaction :).

Regardless of whether or not we have a signal:noise problem, it's a little disappointing that most of the signal right now seems to be about discussing/complaining about the new guidelines. :/

@Mego In social problem, it often comes from a minority of trouble-bringer. With then have only two choices : Kick the problematic elements (a little too much, isn't it?) or impose some rules cutting this liberty to make them understand we don't want this behaviour
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan If there's a more important (on-)topic to be discussed, this discussion will calmly die to let the code-golfers or whoever it is a nice and clean chat :)

Alright, well it's late here and I'm tired, so continue discussing whatever it is that you guys discuss when we aren't all bitterly complaining. o/
