This is a mirror: |. I just found out that you can stick a mirror in the middle of a string if the string can be mirrored on itself! For example, the string abccba. If you cut it in half the two halves are mirror images of each other:
abc <--> cba
So, we can stick a mirror in the middle of t...

@thepiercingarrow My code isn't that clear but it's some basic frequency analysis on each word and then filters some bad data and creates a response template (I'll elaborate later)
@Downgoat Put it this way: There's two ways to "solve the problem"; The easy way and the hard way. Both involve tears and moderator intervention. So far Dennis and co. have been taking it the easy way, just pray you never see the hard way ;-)
@Dennis If ppcg.github.io/chatiquette are going to more or less be official chat guidelines, why not put them in a meta post? As is the only way I knew how to find them was searching for "chatiquette" in chat history.
Well still. Putting this kind of stuff elsewhere (even if it is only github) seems unsustainable in the long term and slightly anti-democratic.
Like if there are ever new mods who want to edit the chatiquette, they'll need permission on github rather than using the SE privileges they already have.
@Downgoat I'm not threatening anyone, I'm trying to point out that this issue is painful no matter what approach you take. The PPCG mods aren't trying to be a buzzkill, they just want the room to be more friendly
@HelkaHomba It's not 4th of July yet in california but ok
@thepiercingarrow you can detect the mutationEvent with a (i think) MutationObserver. Also, when chat messages are added they have a fade effect which you can detect as it's done through a CSS classs
I like how Julia does it. Commas for vectors, spaces and newlines/semicolons for matrices. If you use commas for vectors and matrices, it will be difficult to differentiate between vectors and matrices with only one row/column.
@Downgoat Do you really need built-in matrices? You can just construct a wrapper class around 2d arrays and add it to your standard library or something.
Let's parse and process Key-Language! Given the input of a sequence of keyboard keypresses and/or special keys, output the product when all the actions are processed based on the following keyboard:
+-------------------------------------------------------+
| ~ | ! | @ | # | $ | % | ^ | & | * | (...
@HelkaHomba I'm not sure it's supposed to be democratic. We're still a part of SE which prides itself on being a professional community. Even if the majority of this room wants to be able to post random nonsense all the time, I don't think they should get to do so.
Regardless of that, putting it on meta lets the wrong people vote on it, so it isn't really democratic in a useful way either.
@HelkaHomba If you replied to the message you meant to reply to, then I probably phrased that badly. I meant if you put it on meta, you'll let people vote on it, who don't even visit chat (whereas some people who visit chat might not vote on it).

@R.Kap I'm not sure what you mean by that. You can't really parse things with regex. You can either validate the input format or you could tokenise it.
@MartinEnder FWIW that "professional community" is where we hate fun, many sites have "meme posts" (like the one we just had locked) and one of the biggest sites on the network has the top question titled "How can I tell if a corpse is safe to eat". Clearly, just being on the SE network is not enough justification to say memes can not be used.
@MartinEnder Okay, I phrased it badly. I meant to ask if you could write a regular expression answer for the challenge (maybe in your language Retina) as you do say in your profile bio that you have used Regular Expressions several times for what they were not meant to be used for. I want to see if you can do the same thing for my challenge. :)
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I'm not sure what one has to do with the other. Having community-specific memes or inside jokes or having funny titles is very different from posting walls of carets, avocados and wat GIFs. Although I don't know about anyone else, but I personally was able to have fun in this room without people posting lots of noise.
@R.Kap alright. well with a single regex it's definitely impossible, but I can look into writing another Retina answer later if I have the time.
@MartinEnder I suppose I'm just having a knee-jerk reaction since scrolling up and reading through some of the recent TNB history looks like we're trying to kill off all memes under any circumstance.
I don't think putting a total end to all "memes" is possible or even a good idea if it was.
@MartinEnder Personally I don't mind fewer memes. I'm sick of some of them. My issue is that rules are being written outside of PPCG community's control, so to speak
Should PPCG rules or guidelines or other administrative content be considered "official" when it is not hosted on meta or main?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan It's kinda crazy how everyone gets worked up about memes when they aren't mentioned in the chatiquette with one word. The chatiquette is mostly about being respectful, welcoming and not annoying people. And no one seems to acknowledge that we have a serious problem with those things. I don't have a problem with the occasional (remotely appropriate) meme, but spamming this room with random shit isn't a meme.
@MartinEnder I'd absolutely agree that we have a signal:noise problem, (or that posting something 10 times in a row is spam) but does locking (or maybe even deleting?) the memes page fix that?
And yeah, the chatiquette doesn't directly mention "memes" (Except it doesn't mention, a couple of them) since the locking and the chatiquette came at the same time, they seem very related.
My personal take on locking the memes post is that it didn't satisfy its purpose. It's mostly memes of TNB, not memes of PPCG, and most of it is "haha we so funny because we do this all the time". I really enjoyed reading through the memes posts of other communities because they're relatable and you stumble across them even if you do not frequent their chat.
I don't see anyone who isn't a regular of this room to be interested in that post.
@Quill I feel like a few people are having the reaction that "ERRRR MY GAWD THE FUN POLICE ARE KILLING EVERYTHING I MUST SPEAK UP ABOUT THIS BY SPAMMING SEVEN BILLION AVOCADS" which just makes everything worse

> A guideline is a statement by which to determine a course of action. A guideline aims to streamline particular processes according to a set routine or sound practice. By definition, following a guideline is never mandatory. Guidelines are not binding and are not enforced.
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I've never seen any signal:noise problem in this room, and I find it annoying that we should put some rules and forbid some comportment when this chat was going well without that
Also, I think it's worth saying I'm European, so I only see what happens between 8:00 GMT and 20:00 GMT
You should do a vim answer. That would blow my mind!

@Katenkyo Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. The issues are much more prominent during daytime in the United States (so between 17:00 GMT and 01:00 GMT). Thankfully, since the meta post about the issue, it's gotten better, but it's still there.
@Mego I know that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but it's frustrating to be told "Yeah, we have some problem, so here is some limitations" when the half of the day you're here, there's no problem.
After the discussions about the meme thread, I'm more in favor of keeping it locked. It was mainly "memes of TNB" and not "memes of PPCG", and so wasn't really on-topic for Meta. If it were to be unlocked, I'd like to see a huge cleanup of the "content" there, keeping only the memes that truly apply to PPCG and not just this chatroom.

And if it gets deleted, I won't be too heartbroken.
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I think a single caret can be good to give value to an opinion, it says it's author isn't the only one to think that. The problem comes from chain of carets
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Same here, would like to see it stay locked or cleaned up

@Katenkyo "Limitations" is not a good word. The mods put together some simple guidelines for what constitutes effective chatting rather than pointless drivel and spam (which I believe a majority of this room's users agree with), and asked us to follow them. And again, you don't see the problem because you're often not around when the problem is happening.

Regardless, I am still firmly in the belief that the issues stem from a few users being particularly noisy, drowning out the useful signal of the majority.
@Mego I think it is, because that's how I feel about them. I was already following my own etiquette which is part of my online identity. It's mostly the same as the (un)official chattiquette, but once someone's here to tell me to follow these guidelines, I'm not free anymore to make my comportment evolve with time : it depends of the guideline. Meaning it's limitations.
Also, as I said, I don't see that as a problem, it's pure frustration and childish reaction :).
Regardless of whether or not we have a signal:noise problem, it's a little disappointing that most of the signal right now seems to be about discussing/complaining about the new guidelines. :/
@Mego In social problem, it often comes from a minority of trouble-bringer. With then have only two choices : Kick the problematic elements (a little too much, isn't it?) or impose some rules cutting this liberty to make them understand we don't want this behaviour
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan If there's a more important (on-)topic to be discussed, this discussion will calmly die to let the code-golfers or whoever it is a nice and clean chat :)
